Interview With ExpertThere are few doubts that the world we live in is magnificent. However, at the same time, it’s also stranger than we could ever imagine. Aside from the fact that it’s the only planet believed to support life, it has plenty of various quirks, from uncommon natural phenomena to inherently strange organisms that call it home.
If you’re curious to know more about the peculiarities of our world, the Facebook page ‘Unusual Facts’ has your back. The range of these tidbits of information is so wide that there’s bound to be something for everyone. Scroll down to find them, and be sure to upvote the ones that surprised you the most.
While you’re at it, don’t forget to check out a conversation with Mark Janes, a chartered biologist, scientist, and author of 14 books who kindly agreed to share the most unusual fact from his field of expertise.

Yes, this is sweet but my college specifically prohibits having your kids on campus - meaning, no you can't bring them to class, no you can't have them sit at the library/ hallway/ student center while you are in class

The professor should not have to be a babysitter, nor should the other students have to put up with a screaming kid.
Very commendable, although that's not British Sign Language. Must be Indian or American.
It looks like ASL... but Vellore Institute of Tech is located in India, so not sure.

What blows my mind is that there are so many different flavors of sign language. If there was ever a chance to create a language that all people would be able to understand, it should be sign language. I do understand that different cultures have different gestures and body language, but I think that someone who is deaf/mute should be able to communicate with any other people. I would love if we created a universal sign language that was taught to everyone, so that communicating with any person would be easier.
They've each evolved separately like any other language.
Load More Replies...It's great, but as someone who uses sign language- I don't understand how it would work well? BSL (and I've been told this is the case for other sign languages too) is more than just hand signals. It's body language, it's hand movements at the same time as face movements. Various words use the same sign and it all depends on context whether you want to sign "my mum is home" or "my may is home" as they both have the same sign. We know from context what word the sign means, but a computer programme wouldn't and anyone who doesn't know BSL doesn't know that "mum" and "may" are the same sign so if the system reads "mum" it could mean "may" (or month, meter etc etc) and so be confused. The best way to understand sign language is to learn it.
Now, let's have a program that translates Engish to ASL. Pipedream, I know.
THIS. This is what AI SHOULD be used for. Not to steal the arts from humanity.
If it is anything close to accurate that is impressive. But even if inaccurate it's a start. Sign language varies some by country but using the US, since that is what I know, most deaf people use ASL and much of what is said does not translate directly from the sign. Context matters a lot. For comparison, think of all the oral phrases / slang in English that are not literal. "Kick the bucket" "Hit me up" She is using a different country's sign language but presumably the concept is similar. The first three basic signs match ESL and ASL. But the "no" sign is different than ours.

From his 34 years in the field of science, chartered biologist Mark Janes finds that the most peculiar thing about our world is that life, at its heart, is ridiculously simple, even though it doesn’t seem that way.
Such realization dawned on him during his first lecture studying organic chemistry at college. “The lecturer said organic chemistry was the bedrock of the life sciences and carbon was the star of the show. He went on and on and on about how carbon was the backbone, core, or blueprint of life and had incredible properties.”

Plot twist: he murdered the principal and blackmailed him into becoming a teacher
"Bird brain" shouldn't be an insult. They are sometimes smarter, more perceptive, and better communicators than people.
It seems bird-brain has been used as an insult from the 1910s, likely because of the literal small size of the brain (though our science has improved enough to know that small brains don’t necessarily mean small minds, rather it is the number of neurons or the size of the brain in comparision to the body). However, an older version of bird-brain, bird-witted, has seemingly been in use since the 1600s! Anyway, sorry for the fact rant, but your comment made me wonder where the exact origin of bird-brain came from; still no clue, but I might delve into it more later.
Load More Replies...Some friends had a parrot, when they left him alone he would start shouting for help. After the police had been a couple of times they learnt is was just the parrot.
Parrots aren't even the smartest birds, they just happen to be the best at copying humans. Corvids actually seem to be one the most intelligent types of birds. Crows, ravens, and magpie often demonstrate critical thinking skills that most people would only attribute to humans. Corvids have shown the ability to build tools and develop significant social circles, even with other species. Corvids actually have the ability to mimic human speach, just like parrots, but are less likely to. Parrots are the avian equivalent of a dog. They are easy to train, and they know that they depend on you, so they submit. Corvids are the avian equivalent of a cat. They know that they could easily destroy you and make you submit, so as long as you do want they want, they will be happy being adored, and maybe they will talk to you.
Kudos to BP for not censoring "Willie." Good thing his name wasn't W***y.
Birbs understand a lot more than we give them credit for. We are NOT the only intelligent species on this planet. And the sooner we accept that, the better this world will be
We've come a long way from the "dumb animal/soulless creature" attitude toward other sentient beings. But we need to go even farther.

My mom told me that grandma bought flour in these sacks, and that's how my mom and my aunt got dresses. This was after the Great Depression when people still were trying to survive.
Flour usually came in white sacks. Those were often turned into underwear or dish towels. Animal feed came in the colorful bags. It brought more women to feed stores, where they'd have the employees slinging bags around until enough were collected for a project. Happened in my family. We still have a quilt made of clothes that used to be sacks. Most farms needed several bags of feed at a time, making it quite lucrative for the feed mills if there were a lot of kids to clothe!
Intelligent design with built in repurposing - reminds me of the old Grolsch bottles with a square cross-section that could be used as bricks to build houses in developing world.
Happened in the UK as well, especially during and after the second world war as clothing was subject to rationing.
Flour sack dresses made a comeback for a little while. The closest I've seen in decades are the little kid pillowcase dress.
My grandmother actually sewed those sacks. And she also used the fabric to make clothes.
Once the lecturer moved on to draw a typical diagram of a carbon atom, Janes thought to himself, "Ok, if carbon is the blueprint and base of all life, do I look like anything like this image?”
The lecturer started explaining it by saying, “Carbon has a nucleus with 12 particles,” and Janes thought, “Well, my brain is clearly the nucleus of my body, and it breaks down to 12 cranial nerves; the numbers matched.”

As an American, I am disgusted by the way we treated (and treat) Native Americans. We were the savages, not them.
A good way to honor the Native Americans is to share stories like this. Also, do you know about the Navajo Code Talkers? Keep their stories alive. While we cannot go back in time and change things, we can help by acknowledging the past and work to better the future for all Americans, native and otherwise.

Potato genocide. It was manufactured by the British. Ireland has enough food. The British stole it. A million Irish died as a result. Genocide.
Oklahoma is home to 38 federally recognized tribes, 14.2% of our citizens is Native American which is the highest in the Nation and 26 indigenous languages are spoken in Oklahoma. I'm a PROUD member of Cherokee Nation from my Mom's side of the family, Grandma Lily was 1/2, Mom was a 1/4 which made things very interesting and incredibly tough for her side of the family, especially when Mom was growing up. There has been recent and extremely important laws about our lands made by the Supreme Court that I encourage people to read about them. Yes, I'm on the Cherokee Roll and have my "Indian" card, so I'm not blowing smoke up your a*s or appropriating someone else's culture.
Only a very small part of the white immigrants were legal and bought their land fair and square. The vast majority invaded the area of the US uninvited and forcibly (aka colonized) and - opposite to current illegal immigrants - did not do work the natives didn't want to do. Those immigrants killed the natives, stole from them and ruined the environment. Maybe this is the reason why a population consisting almost entirely of descendants of immigrants, hates today's immigrants so much. The fear of them doing the same as their ancestors did?
The Choctaw just built a monument celebrating this (R). I've shown it here with the one the Irish set up for the same event (L). 0_Choctaw-...ff02e0.jpg
The trail of tears is regrettable, but the worst thing that European settlers did to the native population is to introduce diseases that the native population had no antibodies to. Pestilence spread through the native population because things like smallpox had never been an issue for them. European settlers didn't " win the war" against the native population because they were better than them, they won because they were using biological warfare before anyone knew what it was

"The one-child policy had been introduced in 1979 in an attempt to control the size of China's rapidly growing population and alleviate poverty. Couples living in cities could have only one child, while those in rural areas could have a second if the first was a girl. Couples who wanted a son to carry on the family surname and take care of them in old age could no longer keep trying for a boy; they would face stiff fines and their additional children would be denied social benefits. The policy is believed to have contributed to a rise in the number of child abductions, especially of boys. But Jingzhi knew nothing about this. https://www.bbc.com/news/stories-53566460
I hope, on the other side of this, the people who kidnapped that child were brought to justice, sentenced, & performing their time!
He continued telling the story, “Then he said, 'Then the nucleus is housed in the ground state of the atom.' And I thought, 'My head (nucleus) is attached to my torso, which seems to be the ground state of the body.' Then he said there is another region outside of the torso called the 'valence shell'."

So knowing full well how hard it is to quit smoking you decided to s**t on people that you were once like out of a superiority complex?
Load More Replies...Even when I was a smoker, before I switched to vaping YEARS ago, NEVER was given extra breaks even though one manager was a smoker. That was something you did on your standard break and lunch, especially when I worked in the middle of the Health Complex. You had to go off campus if you wanted to light up or vape and since the surrounding buildings had the same policy it left very few options for you to go too as well. You had to wait until the end of your shift, when you were in your car and off campus. Since you only had standard breaks, there wasn't enough time to walk off campus, smoke or vape, then make it back to your building within the 2- 15 Minute breaks or 30 minute lunches that you are allotted.

Usually it's a birth defect. My kid was born with only one arm.

"He said carbon has four bonds, or limbs, and I had four limbs bonding to the surroundings in a shared, covalent way. The valance shell also breaks down into eight parts, four from carbon and four others from other atoms, making eight called the octet rule. I realized my limbs had an upper and lower part, making eight. Everything fitted, and there was a lot more than that.”

Such a correlation between humans and carbon made Janes discover that “life is the amplified fractal geometry of carbon; life is a unique situation where carbon can effectively grow bigger. Not literally, but through its chemistry. This theory is called 'The Theory of Carbonology'. It is a grand, unified theory that explains ALL anatomy and physiology."
What about HER life though. I assume she also survived but that’s kind of an important thing to include

Who thought it was a good idea to let these kids near a dangerous mine shaft and why was there no barrier keeping people from getting to close?
Celestial Phalanx provided a link higher up to an article about what happened. It says in the article "The shaft was constructed to bring light into a coal mine that closed down years ago. But the wooden planks meant to seal it off from the workings deep underground had rotted. Hidden in a copse of trees, Jannic plunged straight down - followed by his teacher."

Or Brits if we’re to be honest. I was wondering when the USA bashing was gonna happen. I mean, it’s a nation comparatively the size of Europe minus Russia with a similar population and just as much diversity. So much diversity in such a large population that the gross generalization can be nothing more than racist, xenophobic hatred & some twisted form of resentment. Can you imagine speaking to a Kosovo Serb whilst imagining the stereotypical British annoying behaviors and telling them “all you Europeans are alike”????? Cos that’s the ignorance & stupidity that comes with stereotyping Americans. Yes, some are loud & obnoxious & many dress obvious when traveling. I swear I am not making this up. She did get the Swiss passport later on.
I got stuck on the"campaigning against cows".... Why is she a cow hater?
Load More Replies...Hah. Well not exactly. To apply for citizenship you need to first do so at the commune/gemeinde (local town council) in which you've been living for a minimum set time (five years where we are) and a notice will be published, to which any other residents can object. There was a famous case of rejection a few years back that made the headlines, a Dutch lady IIRC, who complained about church bells amongst other things, but she was eventually granted citizenship.

This is exactly why logic and science should always be the first approach to something "unexplained." Just because you want it to be some kind of "devine sign from above", it doesn't mean that the sign isn't just saying "Please inspect the toilet upstairs."

A more precise and simpler description of life.”
So if my cat is a butt head, does that mean I should think of her as family?
That's why I head-butt cats as hard as I can, just to show the love. Just kidding.....I give kitties back massages and tail whips. They seem to love that stuff.
We had an awesome black cat that was skittish around strangers and even people who came over often. He had manageable health issues but after a scare he was the only one allowed on the dining room table (never while eating , he was good about that). He always head butted my husband and me, mostly holding his forehead to yours and then nuzzled noses. Some friends that came over often and he tolerated and would come out and walk around and let them pet him knew they were loved when he would jump on the table during game night, walked around to the 4 of us and finally did the head butt to them. You’ve never seen such an excited beer drinking NASCAR loving man practically in tears❤️😂

A nearby area building (part of a concrete building connected to the canal system for irrigation) had the high water mark on it; it was more than 10 meters. Seeing that gave me a real life understanding of what all of these people faced on that day.

Hey, so your comment made me curious about which was ‘correct’, swum or swam, since they’re both actual words. It turns out that ’swam’ is the past tense of swim, while ‘swum’ is the past participle. Swum is used after ‘have’, as in "I have swum in that pool before. So in this case, you would seemingly be right that the word should be ‘swam’. Anyway, swum and swam no longer look like actual words to me.

Invent the beer, then work on the wheel. 2000 years with no drunk drivers.

Which is why Remembrance Day is on Nov 11th. In Canada, we observe a minute of silence at 11:00am on that day for that reason!
No it didn’t. The war did not end until the Treaty of Versailles was signed in 1919. The armistice began at 11am on the 11th of November, but the war was still technically going.
Yes, as a Brit working in Germany it was slightly jarring to hear people starting the Karneval season as we were thinking about a minute's silence in memory of the war dead. But having said that, I find Britain's morbid fascination with WWI and WWII highly distasteful now. I would prefer it if there was more emphasis on building bridges of peace between nations and peoples for the future instead of glorifying victories in years gone by.
Load More Replies...Which was a catastrophically stupid thing to do. Nobody knows how many men died to serve the egos of officers who wanted the “glory” of launching the “final” battle of the war. It’s why when a cease fire agreement is reached now, it’s dispatched and implemented immediately.
Exactly. It had already been obvious for some time that an armistice was coming, even more so for the last 3 days when the German delegation arrived in France to negotiate the final wording. Any commanders who ordered advances in the last few days were absolute d*cks. 2,738 men died on the last day alone.
Load More Replies...And a few more people on each side died so they could reach this time, because some units didn't get the word about the cease fire.
This was a deliberate decision for symbolism and cost many lives as the war could have ended a few days earlier. Despite knowledge that the war was about to end, some acts - like artillery bombardments - increased. The soldiers knew that they would have to carry all the unfired ordinance back to to base.

No. Please tell people this. This post isn’t saying NOT to provide them water, literally EVERYONE knows pets need food and water bowls. People actually SHOULD KNOW THIS about cat kidneys. They’re used to getting most hydration from their food. Some people only feed their cats dry food with a bowl of water next to it and aren’t realizing that their cat is actually becoming dehydrated from that - food should have some moisture in it. Cats don’t have a huge thirst drive, they don’t drink much water, although should always be provided water. TELL PEOPLE THIS PLEASE, especially cat owners, so they know to provide plenty of opportunities for hydration for their cats. Knowledge is the key to responsible pet ownership, not trying to keep people in the dark about how their pet’s health works for some reason 😂 telling people cat kidneys are efficient isn’t going to make anyone stop giving their cats water, jfc 😂

Each of these buds sprouts and forms its own pseudostem and a new bulbous rhizome. These daughter plants are called suckers. Banana plants are typically propagated through their rhizomes, not seeds. However, wild bananas do have seeds and they are dispersed primarily by animals. Animals eat the fruit and then excrete the seeds in a different location, allowing new plants to grow. https://nhb.gov.in/pdf/fruits/banana/ban011.pdf

Also, there’s no way this would take 2 hours to pronounce 😂 I stumbled my way through the first two lines in about 40 seconds, and there’s only 28 lines. Google says that’s just over 18 minutes.

I really don't buy this one. You're not going to sit around "designing" a cookie for four years when you could just make them and sell them. More likely, the "iconic Oreo design" wasn't finalized until the 4th year of production.
We have come a long way. Today someone in China can knock off a product in a matter of minutes!
The project status meetings must have been a drag, with a "90% complete" status week after week after week
I think it's one of two things 1: The photo is AI generated Or 2: It's another scientist person thingy walking up

I suspect AI has a slightly skewed idea of what your average New Guinean banana farmer looks like too.

Interestingly, immigrants represent 14% of the US population in 2021, but represented 24% of those experiencing poverty that year.
This is absolute rubbish and I'm fed up with it being posted as fact.

This has been shown time and time again to be a completely unfounded connection to the creation of modern Western numeric script. If you look at the evolution of Indian-to-Arabic-to-European numerals, you can see this has no historical relevance. For example, at no point in historical usage, going back 1,200 years, has the number 9 ever been written or used with angles.
Did anyone else read the totally barmy and seemingly unrelated theory in the article text?
What is with the random coloring of text in these images anyway? It makes a lot of them look like some sort of madman's manifesto.
Guessing it's just from OP. They prob didn't do these themselves?
