We all have our little quirks... some are more astounding than others. While most humans tend to have commonly shared features like 12 pairs of ribs, or eyes that are typically brown, green, or blue, sometimes features diverge a bit more uniquely. Much like all species on this planet, it is not impossible to encounter variations that simply blow our minds.

In a recent Reddit post that discussed weird body features, Redditors shared some of their most striking peculiarities. As each commenter shared their individualoftentimes confoundinganomalies, a shared community began to build and others helped to offer a bit of insight on the possible 'why' and 'how' their quirks may exist. Some (possible) explanations were given, while some still remained a mystery.

When the army base is doing artillary drills 30 miles away. When there's a mouse running through the kitchen. When a squirrel is running through the driveway and crunching leaves. It makes sleeping a bit difficult. But going to a casino is like a freaking acid trip.

I don't think mine is as acute as this but I can hear the sound of bubbles popping in a can of soda from across the room - while the TV is on. I'm constantly playing a game of "what's making that noise?' and most of the time people think I'm nuts cause they don't hear anything. I can be so distracting. At one point I was convinced it was auditory hallucinations and I was worried I might be losing my mind but I guess it's just really good hearing. Great for eavesdropping, not great for getting to sleep without earplugs!

My mum didn't believe me that I heard our pet hermit crab make clicking/chirping noises. She thought I was full of it (I mean I was a kid with ADHD and a super over-active imagination). Well, as a full-grown adult I can wholeheartedly say that I was indeed correct: https://www.hermitcrabanswers.com/what-does-hermit-crab-chirping-mean/

My body temp runs 2 degrees lower than normal. So 99 is a fever for me; but doctors don't consider it a fever until you're about 100.5 or so. I ran 102.5 fever for 12 days (despite ibuprofen and acetaminophen) and the doctor refused to do anything.

I am brutal cold all year round. On one hand I can handle hot pots on the other end it makes actually having an actual fever near impossible because a “normal” temp IS a fever for me. Same with my blood pressure. When it registers at anything 110/80 it high for me (which makes going to the doctor difficult).

As of yet, because there are currently only around 100 known cases, it isn't known. It's theorised that it could be something that is broken down in the water that effects the person. (which is hard to determine, since worldwide, water may contain different things) or that it is something on the skin that reacts to the water, producing the rash/hives.

I have it too and I used to be a competitive swimmer and I got diagnosed with it when I was 12 and I wouldn’t accept it so I would sneak out at night and try to swim and I also have P.O.T.S ( a.k.a a fainting disorder) so I passed out while trying to get in the water and started to drown. Luckily I have a life alert thing that I can press in case of emergency’s, so I did and it just so happens that while it alerts everyone it makes this loud noise, and the life guard was there trying to do something idk but he was able to save me and when I woke up in the hospital my skin was on FIRE

I have what my mom calls "alopecic tendencies". I get random bald spots on my head, but they're no bigger than a fingertip. I have really kinky, thick hair so you can't see them unless you are braiding it. However, my bald spots started migrating downward. A few months ago, my entire left eyebrow fell off. it's grown back except for a small chunk that looks like a shaved a slit in my brow, so I don't mind it. However, the hard part was when a large chunk of my eyelashes fell out. I have beautifully long, thick lashes, so that was a blow to my vanity. If any of you have a better term for this condition, let me know : )

Visual snow and floaters are not the same. I have visual snow and it's trippy. Go check it out on youtube. It really sucks. It's worse when I close my eyes.

They are called floaters. I've had them since I was very young. On bright days, especially in winter when snow covers the ground, I can't go outside without sunglasses; as they ALL become visible at the same time. They can be a sign of retinal detachment. If you notice a sudden increase, you should see a doctor.

I have/had them, too. But had them removed from one eye, which was the really bad one. It is a complicated surgery, but if done well, with a perfect result. Absolutely worth the time and pain. The procedure is called vitrectomy

I have a friend with a fully-bifurcated uvula (two separate dangly bits). We used it as a fundraiser for our guild at the Renaissance Faire one year: 25 cents to see it. IIRC, we raised about $30 over the weekend - might have been a little less; it was a long time ago and my memory is old and grey. Anyway there were a lot of disappointed guys who apparently didn't know what a uvula (an uvula?) is.

Only People With Rare Body Features Joined This Thread And Shared 35 Of Their Body Anomalies My sternum is concaved, so there's essentially a divet right between my breasts (I'm a guy) EDIT: sure have learned quite a bit from this thread. I get asked my name a lot, it is Ian from Nebraska. Apparently it's has an actual medical term (Pectus Excavatum) which is most definitely not a spell out of Harry Potter and way more common than I realized. It even has it's own subreddit (r/pectusexcavatum) There's an opposite condition where the chest convexes outwards (Pectus Carinatum). If the 2 hug, they fuse into one superbeing. There are surgeries to repair them but hurt like hell and have a long recovery time. Only recommended if it is a problem in your daily life. Common uses include cereal bowl (not that I have done it), cell phone holder, candy dish, cuddle spot.

I had the carinatum type. Operated when I was 18 to correct it, because as a teenager I was so embarassed of that to the point that I would keep my t-shirt on at the beach. Now I'm 36 and have a big scar in my chest. Sometimes it itches and sometimes it kinda hurts when I spend too much time with a bad posture. If I could go back in time, I wouldn't have done the surgery, because today I guess I would eventually stop caring about what other people think.

No, it is the result of a failed fusion between the tubes that makes the uterus during development. Many mammals have two uteri.

I sneeze when I pee a lot, but I think I conditioned myself to do this... A few years ago I had a nasty cold for about a month, followed by a chest infection and then the flu, I was ill for about 3 months with a crazy runny nose the entire time so I started blowing my nose like crazy every time I went to the bathroom. Now no matter what I always end up having to blow my nose whenever I use the toilet and sneeze like crazy if I don't do it straight away! (I basically conditioned myself to sneeze and have a runny nose whenever I use the toilet!)

I have the same thing. I am a petite woman with an athletic build who enjoys working out and playing sports. Having massive calves is a huge advantage in sports like riding, rowing, bike riding, and kayaking. However, sometimes I feel like the incredible hulk when it comes to buying trousers. I remember when skinny jeans were all the rage and one of the employees at a clothing store was helping me find jeans in my size. They gave me a small because I'm petite. I couldn't even get the damn pair of jeans past my massive calf.

Me too. I thought everyone could do it? It feels like a muscle right inside of my ear, but not part of the ear maybe? I can only hold it for like 3 or 4 seconds at a time and still hear the noise. For people this doesn't happen too, the noise is just like being on a plane that just landed and is slowing down, but a bit quieter.

That is your tensor tympani muscle! It is located in the middle of your ear and is in charge of dampening loud sounds or sounds from within your body. Apparently it’s very rare to be able to control this muscle. I didn’t think I could control it but recently discovered I can if I close and scrunch my eyes. Pretty neat.

That makes sense. I always do it when I know something is going to be really loud straight off the bat, like fireworks or something like that. It helps it not hurt and not make me jump as much if I do it beforehand. Also, if I do it where there's really loud music playing, I can hear the "true" sound of the music...if that makes sense.

It can't be that rare since everyone who has commented (including me!) can do it. I can do it voluntarily, plus it happens when I yawn. (In fact, if I do it on purpose several times in a row, it triggers a big yawn!)

Tensor tympani muscle. Some people have it under voluntary control (I do) and can flex it to pop their ears without having to yawn. Flexing makes crackling, popping noises or a dull kind of hushes roar.

Hi OP. If your fingers bend back in a u shape then you have hypermobility. It comes in stages so some people have just hands, others have 2-3 joints, some are full blown contortionist. I can also bend my fingers like this but can also hyper extend my shoulder and my knee caps float.

I have a theory on this. My brother has 3 nipples, and he was a twin, although the other was miscarried. I had a work friend many years ago, whose second child was also a "parasitic twin" with an extra nipple. She believed that all parasitic twins left their mark on the remaining, surviving twin. Would be interesting to find out if OP and the other commenters here were the same.

Only People With Rare Body Features Joined This Thread And Shared 35 Of Their Body Anomalies Really, really high bone density. X-ray images look like cartoon skeletons. No one can tell me exact what’s going on. I have grey eyes. No color. Like a black and white eye. I also have, if I understood the cardiologist correctly, 20 pacemaker nodes? Which … could be good? Or bad? The doctor didn’t offer an opinion one way or the other. Edit: this is popular. To FAQ here: Eye color from a little while ago: https://imgur.com/a/T1XvSM0 Grey to Grey-green to blue. To me, in the mirror in my bathroom, they just look grey. But that could be just the way I see them. AFAIK I’m not colorblind. (I pass the tests). Swimming: I can swim. I cannot float - not even when I hold my breath. I don’t have any x-ray pics - and hopefully I won’t have the occasion to get any anytime soon. But in the off chance that I do, I’ll post it. The Game is going to flag me for talking about my bones - and I’m going to break everything, all at once. Update 2: a few of y’all have mentioned Wolff-Parkinson-White and after reading up on it a little, given that I had some premature ventricular contractions in my late teens, (much older now) and my heart rate has always been a little higher than average, regardless of how fit I was - it never seemed to go up or down much - I’m going to go get checked out. Better safe than sorry.

I've always wondered if I had high bone density. I too have a hard time floating. And as many times as I probably should have, I have never broken a bone. I also do not look as heavy as I am. Especially when standing next to someone of the same height & weight. People are always shocked when I tell them how much I actually weigh. But I'm not sure if that is also related to high bone density.

I have extra in one ear, causing it to be thicker than my other one. The thicker one curves back, making the center curve stick out further than the upper section. It also has a tendency to hurt if I sleep on it weird.

Only People With Rare Body Features Joined This Thread And Shared 35 Of Their Body Anomalies I have ultra low heart rate. It was in the 50s anyway, but with some endurance training its in the 30s now. Ive been multiple tested by cardios, 24h holter, all good no pauses or irregularities im good to go. When im in good shape im at 35-36bpm while awake, and down to 30 during sleep. Maybe if i get in a good shape again, i ll ask for a new holter to see if i break 30bpm during sleep and touch 29 or so. Some More info: I don't take any meds that affect my HR. I have a very mild Hypertension that is controlled with (ARBs). Not beta blockers. This is the only med i'm taking. This hasn't affected my HR in any way. My HR was already ultra low before starting the meds. In fact now in the summer, I'm completely stopped the meds because BP drops naturally. I don't have any other health condition (appart from orthopedic injuries). I'm 41m and as far as i can remember my HR is as described. I am mainly a runner but i also swim as secondary or recovery. I do some strength training now and then. I'm not super good runner, just a 40:00 at 10k, but with very little training and i'm always battling with orthopedic injuries. My max HR is around 175, i always use a HR strap when running (it measures electric signals), i dont trust the wrist optical HR monitors, they are not very accurate. Needless to say i have never ever taken any other substance-drugs-steroids-hormones etc.

This reminds me somewhat of my late childhood: I was in such good shape you couldn’t get my heart rate above 100 and, if I relaxed and focused on lowering my pulse, it could easily dip below 50.

I am like this, when I was younger and in shape, I could set of the low limit on our pulse oximeters we were developing, which defaluted to 45 bmp. Now older and out of shape, I am closer to normal. My core temp is lower than "standard" as well, always has been. If I am over 97.0, I have a "fever"

Yeah, I had 42 bpm when I was younger. Even my heart would think "this is slow…" and would enter an extra beat sometime. BOING! The heart has circles of electrics around it and they are all back up systems, as you go down. So when you beat too slow the first back up system puts in a BOING! The very lowest and last one beats only a few times per minute and keeps the brain alive. Like when you're in the water or something. Is what a heart specialist told me but this was 30 years ago so knowledge has probably changed. I'm now post-viral diseased and have 60 - 80 resting bpm and a too low BP :(

Tooth fusion is what happens when two separate tooth buds grow together and form into one tooth that is literally fused together. Fused teeth may have two separate tooth buds, and even their own pulp chambers and canals, but upon extraction or falling out, they will still be fused together as one solid tooth.

    Lakota Wolf
    Community Member
3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

I guess if they're truly purely gray. For example, my eyes have gray in them, but they're kind of a gray-green-blue hot mess with flecks of yellow here and there (and were light blue when I was a kid). So, I imagine there are many people with gray-ish eye colors, like gray-blue, gray-green etc., but perhaps true gray, like a true silverish gray without any other colors, is unusual.

I was born with black hair, which lightened to white blond after a few months. Then it gradually became darker blonde until I was 'dirty-blonde' or maybe light brown, though I'm not certain what it is naturally now because I have dyed it so often. My all my sibling had blonde hair when they were born. The boys slowly became darker until it was light brown, but my sister's stayed white blonde until she was late teens when it became more of a honey blonde, which I find so fascinating. My mum's hair is basically the same as my sister's and my dad's is like my brothers.

Body hair and head hair generally don't match in people with multifactorial hair or eye color. Most blondes have slightly darker body/public/axilla hair than what's on their heads and it occasionally profiles as red or auburn. For many brunettes, if you have a light eye or hair gene, your facial har (men) might be red. This is not at all unusual. I'm blonde and have blonde arm and leg hair; light brown armpits, and red down there.

You know your body best and I apologize as I'm not trying to tell you what to do but - have you ever had a podiatrist or dermatologist make sure the nail is okay? My mom has something very similar on one of her toes, and it's given her a lot of grief and issues over the years. She is kind of lax on some of her habits, and one time she got a fungal infection "in between" the nail separation line. She's STILL battling it, years later.

I have that, but it's like two sides of a triangle across the nail bed and along the right hand side of my toe. It doesn't grow out straight along the other edge, it's like one half is normal and the other is a thick callous. It grows that way no matter how I cut it and I have even lost the nail once and it still grew the same after.

Permanently split toe nails are usually the result of consistently wearing tight shoes as a child/infant. Nails will either split in half (usually the big or pinky toe), or another nail will grow on top of one that’s already there.

How random that this was mentioned twice here! I have WPW too. It's actually an extra signaling pathway between the heart's upper and lower chambers that can cause a fast heartbeat. It will show up on an EKG even if you are not experiencing tachycardia. I don't have symptoms so it doesn't bother me. You can have it fixed with surgery if necessary.

Um... does everyone not have this? I don't really go around looking at knees, but I know mine look like the pic

No, your kneecap is a singular bone in one piece. It’s a literal cap over your knee bones. It’s not normally supposed to be in two pieces 😅

I have occasionally actually seen the OPs from Reddit comment on the BP posts! So sometimes, Pandas' comments do reach the OP. :) And even if they don't, it's nice to see that our fellow Pandas are concerned for the health and wellbeing of their fellow human beings.

Do you mean your kneecap floats? I thought everyone's did. Or something else?

I have naturally huge trap and calf muscles. I didnt think much of them until college and then dudes started asking me for tips. Specifically my calves because well you can see them when I wear shorts. I just had to say genetics when asked.

I hear you! They do give you quite the advantage in some sports like horseback riding, cycling and rowing/competitive canoeing. It does make finding trousers an absolute nightmare though. I will never be able to fit into a pair of skinny jeans. I am quite active, which just leads to my things and calves getting even larger.
