First impressions are really important during the hiring process, both for the prospective employer and the candidate.
To attract the best talent, companies need to craft quality job adverts. They should be clear about what it is they're looking for and accurately reflect the role's typical duties and responsibilities.
However, for better or worse, the competition sometimes doesn't seem so high. After digging through the subreddits 'Recruiting Hell' and 'Antiwork,' we realized that some recruiters are so out of touch with reality, it's evident even in the job advertisement they write.
Continue scrolling to check out what we're talking about and don't miss the conversation we had with talent acquisition consultant and career coach Keirsten Greggs. You'll find it in-between the pictures.

Agree! I've worked in a factory with people who have been employed 20+ years and didn't know a thing about a different part of the factory. Yet the higher ups would go to them, instead of a worker who actually knew the damned machine.
That's upper management for ya! They're hired for that job cuz they're yes-men (a person who does whatever is told of them, no questions) and it's infuriating!!!
Load More Replies...What happens is the programming division tells HR they need person for a job and list the skills needed. HR, without knowing anything, tacks on the experience amounts, thinking they are going to get the best person out there. There is a disconnect in the system
I was thinking "needs four years programming, and experience in FastAPI". they're two different requirements that need to be met (and easily can) but they get conflated into one "four years experience in FastAPI" which can't. Or whoever is writing the position description is just clueless...
Load More Replies...In the tech field it's a way of getting past certain visa requirements. No one domestic will admit to having 4 years of experience for something that's been out for two, but people from other countries wanting visas will. Then the recruiter can say to the government they couldn't find domestic people with the skills but they found a bunch overseas.
I don't know about other recruiters, but when we were interviewing for IT jobs if someone applied with an obvious red flag like that we'd discard their application. That said, we wouldn't have worded an position like that in the first place.
Load More Replies...I see loads of these software job ads on here. I worked in a factory where HR knew precious little about the on goings of the factory and the very first face i saw and spoke to was an HR rep. when it comes to hiring they should be nothing more than paper pushers. the face to face meetings and "get to knows" should be with experienced employees. not an easy balance to find but will largely eliminate these ridiculous job listings.

As a woman just hint at having tried for kids. You won't have to go into details or even lie but everyone will assume, if you give some vague hints like you were trying to find out how to plan your family life or something equally vague that you tried for kids and couldn't have them or had an abusive relationship or something equally horrible and drop the question like a hot potato. You can then go back to talking about your job experience.
To get a better understanding of how to scroll through job ads, we contacted the founder of TRAP Recruiter, LLC, Keirsten Greggs, who has spent two decades in talent acquisition and career coaching.
"A good job posting is discoverable by the qualified audience/job seekers it intends to attract," she told Bored Panda. "It is more than a list of duties and responsibilities. Job seekers should come away with a clear understanding of what problem they are solving, what they can offer to the role and organization, and what the role and organization can offer them so that they can apply and/or move on to the next, more desirable role quickly."
According to Greggs, a good job posting also shares the salary or hourly rate, work schedule, work location, and benefits, as well as provides an easy way to apply.
Seeking Candidate With 15+ Years Of Social Media Experience
Tom was smart. Sold MySpace for a bunch of money and lives his life indulging in his hobbies.
Well I don't know what you guys have been doing, but I've been on Instagram since I was three, so I can totally apply for that job now /s
And there were still a bunch of social media platforms around, even then. That said, they're probably asking for a bit much for 15+ years experience.

A Friend Of Mine Was Looking For A Job Yesterday. This Must Be Hella Illegal, Right?
Definitely a misuse of the software, which is intended to be installed on classroom computers to make sure students stay on task. (I was so horrified such a product existed, I looked it up.)
It's legal if the company owns the device the person is using for work and the person is connected to the company's network. But that's where it ends. They can't require monitoring on your own device on your own network and certainly not your spouse's.
I don't really have a problem with it on a work device, it's a little creepy but if that's the tradeoff for work from home seems ok. But to expect it on your personal devices as well? Nope, not gonna happen. I can't give that particular example the benefit of the doubt though since it says "on and *off* work/business hours". So they're literally trying to monitor what the people do in their free time. That's truly invasive.

Example: My husband used to work for a religious university and we both had to sign an agreement not to consume alcohol at any time. I worked for a sports team and was originally required to appear at after-game events at a local brewery. I was allowed to skip the team event since I was just a minor employee and it was more important to the school that I not be seen at a brewery.
Do you not have employment laws in your country? Both of those clauses would contravene employment laws here in the UK and most of Europe and would not be enforceable.

Load More Replies...This feels like someone manipulating an app to get a funny result. I can't see why it's going to pick two arbitrary dates and ask why you weren't working then. I suspect the person put in "[some date] - 9/2008 school" and then "2/2016 - [some date] a job" which would make an app assume the gap from 2008 - 2016 was actually working age.
Conversely, Greggs said that some of the biggest red flags people should watch out for in job ads are:
- The descriptions of duties and responsibilities are vague;
- The list of duties and responsibilities is long and/or doesn't specify the qualifications at all;
- The language used isn't inclusive;
- Phrases like "high performance", "sense of urgency", etc. in a manner that feels toxic;
- The lack of salary/salary range, or the range is enormous, and/or states the salary is "commensurate with/determined by skills and experience".
The New York Times Has An 8 Round Interview Process
I genuinely snorted. Thanks for the laugh internet person
Load More Replies...Why?! I never had more than 2 interviews for a job. I can see the value of a third if there's a lot of candidates or something, but hell to the nah to more than that.
I’ve never had more than 2 interviews! I can’t imagine the waste of time, like what is the point of 8-12 interviews?
Load More Replies...This is absurd. I've never had more than two interviews for a job. More than that just makes no sense.
I can't help but wonder whether some of these hide the salary until the last possible moment, so by the time you find out what you're going to be paid you've already invested so much time into the application process that you're willing to take lousy pay.
Load More Replies...In my current job I had three interviews and only 2 of them were actually meant to sort candidates out and the third was a meet and greet with the team when it was already a given I would be hired unless I did something egregious like making racist comments or just not showing up and that was good. It really gave me a chance to get a feeling for the company before the start. Everything above that seems excessive for most jobs unless it's something that demands very specific skills that must be tested and guaranteed like applying as a CEO or something equally high up. Otherwise I have the feeling all those requirements for interviews are an attempt to weed out people who care for their needs and would buck at unreasonable demands so you'll get doormats who'll buy into hustle culture at cost of their own well being.

*clears throats* There once was a purple flying turtle. He went be the name of Tony. He thought he had a great answer for this requirement, but the question simply made him stony. Why ask such a question? Did they want a story about his life, how his home is full of plastic, his eggs were snatched, and a net took his wife. Tony sat there and wondered, "What does this have to do with the work for which he was applying?" Then he sighs and looks at the family portrait on the wall. Load More Replies...I want to know where they are pulling this "market salary range". I have been told this same thing for my entire career.
Recruiters are akin to cold call salespeople, medical debt collectors & meter maids.
This was via a recruiter. A headhunter. While we don’t know the context here, often times they reach out cold (typically via LinkedIn or real world networks) trying to score their commission by filling jobs for companies. I very legitimately get at least 10 calls/emails/DMs per week. Tho I’m mostly retired, what I do is very specific and very niche. Which means, like the handful of my peers, we all know each other & the companies that hire us have heard about us. In my case they want someone in-house & salaried (I’m a contractor in a contractor field) at a fraction of the cost. It’s insulting when you’re approached blindly and offered less than your worth. Then there’s fair market values versus market values. Which are distinct. A fair market value report is the average made in a given market. A market value is the lower range in a low cost of living location. Teachers & nurses are a good example of the market value variances.
Load More Replies..."Absurd requirements usually stem from an inexperienced hiring manager who doesn't understand the role they're trying to fill and doesn't have a solid grasp on the available talent in the market," Keirsten Greggs explained.

Why Do We Have To Jump Through So Many Hoops Just To Get Our Application Rejected Anyway
I'm a bit milder on that because often it's meant to weed out bots. Everyone can easily google a random joke but a bot won't know what to do. It's also reasonable to weed out people who'd think writing sexist or racist jokes is ok because it's just joking. Actually, the kind of joke people find funny is very telling. I've seen people being fired over 'jokes' they've made and I feel this could be something a company would do to try and weed out idiots who think bullying is funny. And last it's a customer service position and the last thing you want in this job is a jokester who tells inappropriate jokes. Having a fine sense of humour can be a great strategy to defuse escalations if done well, but telling bad jokes is definitely a no go.
Why Even Ask?
An accidentally brilliant snippet. "Look, if you want more than $35K, we won't waste your time."
Depends on where the job is, what it's for, how many hours etc. But honestly, I don't understand the logic of not just listing the salary up front. Well, I guess I do, they're hoping to lowball new employees but it's a horrible practise.

In 2022, the Paychex team surveyed Americans who have recently looked for a job, and people across the country shared their current standards for evaluating an open position and what constitutes a potential warning sign. Their main concerns coincided with what Greggs told us.
Compensation is one of the most important aspects of a job, especially in times of economic uncertainty. So, it's unsurprising that not including a salary range was at the top of the list (65%). For many candidates, omitting that information implies that the salary range is probably low. Not including a salary and using the phrase “gain experience” makes them feel that the company expects them to work for free.
Sometimes, a great benefits package can make up for a salary that's a little lower than you want to accept, but if the pay is much less than you think you’re worth and there aren’t other benefits to compensate for it, people feel there's no point in considering it.
Exactly On Time
This is a company that requires you to be early to prepare for work; opening procedures, shift work etc. They want to make sure you're prepared to give an extra 15 to 30 minutes a day off clock. Illegal and immoral.
I worked at a factory running a press in 2006. We had to be at our machine and clocked in no later than 15 minutes before shift start. That included having our tools out and ready. We never got paid for it. I didn’t stay more than a couple years. I was young and dumb.
Load More Replies...I've always hated the "early is considered on time". No, that's why we have two different words.
Early is on time, On time is late, and Late is unacceptable, haha
Load More Replies...Wouldn't consider working for a company that doesn't know when to use "who" or "that" in this context.
Hmm, I was always taught that if it's important (like a job interview) you *should* be early, even if it's only a few minutes. Not to "show them you're keen" but to make sure you aren't late and to give yourself a couple minutes to settle yourself before the interview. That said, it's a bloody awful reason to reject an applicant. Makes me wonder if it's just an excuse and they couldn't say the real reason they didn't want to hire the person.
Yes, that's true, but if you live up the road, being on time is being on time and giving being on time as a reason to not hire is definitely a red flag. They wouldn't have hired a person who planned that puffer and needed it then because there were issues that made them 'late'. So that's not what this is about. They want someone working for free or at least working more hours than are agreed upon

While it's common for companies to not want to sponsor non-citizens, this reply is sooooo unprofessional and wrong.
It’s also common for them to WANT to sponsor non-citizens. You can offer the position at a fraction, of the FMV & show good reason that no one local nor citizens will apply for the job. Why offer $80k positions when I can have HR manage a bunch of H-1B or E-1/2 immigrants at $40k? Ten work visa employees would save me $400k/yr.

Most of that should never by chargeable, but my gf had one in the UK recently that required a criminal records check, the cost of which would be deducted from your salary if you didn't stay at least 6 months.
I think that's vaguely ok. The NHS have to undertake DBS checks for the majority of staff - as do schools and social services. It can get mighty expensive if they've no intention of hanging around.

Then these businesses cry and say nobody wants to work when they can't find anyone with perfect credit to hire.
Really? And that's legal? What do these companies have to do with your private financial affairs? As long as you do your job and you do it well, that's where their interference should stop. You work to live, not live to work and your employer is not your friend nor your family.

I don't understand this and the issue of the OP. A transcript is a resume, yes? Then this shows up, no? Maybe not. My guess would be that they wanted a specific candidate, maybe even an internal candidate so they use whatever means necessary to remove others from contention. So this is not actually a reason it's an excuse.
Load More Replies...You don't want to report to a total idiot. I'd say the OP dodged a bullet.
Extreme logic, misapplied. I once didn't qualify for a job I had previously held, because I needed 6 months of experience and I was part time, so they could only give me 3 months' credit. (Silly me, I thought holding the job prior meant I didn't need to prove I had the experience before.) Had to reapply with all the job experience, to prove I was qualified, as they don't look at anything not in the present application.
Something about this one. Why wouldn't his calculus class show up on his transcript? It would have been a basic requirement unless he tested out of it. He will then need something from his university explaining this. Strange
If people have to tick a lot (and I mean a lot) of boxes even to get their foot in the door, they start hearing alarm bells.
A potential reason for this is the fact that the company may not really know what it's looking for, meaning new recruits might be set up for failure from the get-go. It could also mean the scope of the role is too broad, in which case people might be in over their heads as soon as they arrive, too.

Ayo This Lady Working For UPS Really Tried To Get Free Labor Out Of Me Lol
If they do that with 20 people a week, that's a full time position they don't have to pay for
Which is why you need something like an employment ombudsman. If a company was regularly sourcing free labour that way they'd be fined into oblivion.
Load More Replies...Yes, because we don't want to hire anyone who is sharp enough to know when they're being taken advantage of.
I've experienced this before and I wasn't sure about it but I went anyways. It actually worked pretty well. I was there for two hours, did some mingling, tried to be semi-helpful if I could and out of the way...I ended up realizing that I liked this process cuz at no point was I given directives to work as if I was employed and I was given the chance to see how the company and the employees functioned on a busy shift and decide if I liked that atmosphere. And, yeah, I was offered a job and spent my last two years in Portland with that place.
My daughter (18 yo) just started a job at UPS. They told her she would get $17 hourly, but then changed it to $15 after her first week. They are harassing her to work more hours that she told them she would. She said everybody is quitting...then they just hire new people who only last a few days or weeks. She wants to quit. Load More Replies...As someone who finds jeans extremely uncomfortable, I loooove this selling point. Like, talk about a big bucket of f***all.
I'd really like to know where this one is located before passing any sort of judgment. Maybe sick days are mandated by law so they don't need to list them as benefits? If this is for a job in Australia, you already get guaranteed holidays and sick leave, public health care is already subsidised but we have private as an option. So if that's the case it makes sense, all these things are benefits in some shape or form. The Jeans one just means casual dress code, not suit and tie or uniform (which is still a benefit).
You're right with Australia, based on OP's Reddit comments. I wondered if it was the UK, which is very similar in terms of what the US folk would consider benefits.
Load More Replies...The last pet peeve on the list was too many interview rounds (anything more than two rounds). Ideally, the whole thing should be organized and efficient, and when the process drags on, it indicates to people that the team is indecisive or overly consensus-driven.

Apparently, many companies do these days. This includes areas like game development. I have worked with computers since the 1970's, and I have done beta testing for several releases of EverQuest, EverQuest II, and other games. In all those cases I got free access to a dedicated beta test server and was expected to file bug reports, etc. NOW companies expect me to pay full retail price for "early access." Sorry. I was a test engineer and was paid well to test software. If you want me to test your software, then YOU pay ME, not the other way around. Companies have amazing gall these days and we all need to push back hard.

100 seconds of network latency? I think they meant 100 milliseconds. Also, for $6 an hour the only requirement should be having a pulse.
Where is there a minimum wage that low? Even in the US, it is higher than that.
I saw something similarish for a security guard position in Kentucky offering $7/hour. The south apparently plays by their own rules (that perpetuates poverty).
Load More Replies...They try to sound all technical but just succeed in demonstrating their ignorance; "i5 or newer" makes no sense - an i5-750 from 2009 is next to useless these days, and a current gen i3 outperforms the i5 from a few years back - and even the worst dialup in the world has latency of less than 100 seconds. 🙄
Indeed, but I'd like to know their "highly resource consuming apps" because for many apps an i5 from 2009 will actually run them just fine. About 10 years ago, I (along with ~12 other people) answered an online ad from UPS for drivers & truck loaders. We sat through a sort of orientation process for over an hour. Once done, the guy running it said they won’t accept anyone with a criminal conviction, regardless of how long ago or minor it was. Three people awkwardly got up and shuffled out. He then eyeballs a few of us and tells us tattoos must be covered at all times. So long sleeves & ful length pants in NYC during the summer…the trucks & loading areas have no AC. And then he got angry when only three people had truck drivers licenses (all 3 were heavily tattooed, too!). They weren’t actually hiring loaders. Needless to say, everyone got up and left in disgust.
I'm ok with the idea of an intern when it's part of schoolwork. eg: When I was in my final year of high school they placed us in a job for a week to get an idea of how that career worked. Depending on your preference and the job you got it was basically a week long internship. That seems fine since it's basically part of your education. But once you're an adult to be expected to work long term unpaid, that's ridiculous. I know they still did similar internships while students were in Uni, but I'd hope they were at least somewhat paid positions.

Sooo many companies it there trying to filter out people by saying things that cause applicants to filter THEM out. Don’t want vaccinated employees? Cool! Next!
Depending on the job, this is absolutely fair? Like, healthcare workers are *required* to keep their vaccinations up to date because they can pose real risk to their patients if they don't.
Except this is the opposite: they're anti-vaxxers who won't hire anyone who got a Covid vaccine.

Surprisingly, Thomas Ince of LP First Capital has deleted this absolutely dreadful take. I like it when someone makes dreadful statements, then pretends he never said it. That person thinks with an open mouth, doesn’t take personal accountability, and shows a low locus of control with an absence of grit.
I was 29, because before that I lived in places I could take alternate transportation (walk, bus, ride with someone else). Not everyone has the same path, and to base employment on a single situation is stupid, and if you were denied a job here based on this question, you dodged a bullet.
I spent most of my life in a very dense city with less than an hour a month in a car. Counting cabs. Why would someone who grew up in, say, Manhattan ever get a drivers license at that age? And what about places here you have to be 18? Fücktard!!!!
No wonder he didn't get any good leads. He left the "st" off his name.
But what if you grew up in a state that didn't allow you to start driver's ed until 16, so you aren't eligible for a license until 16 and a half?
My home room teacher was the driver's ed guy. We did NOT get along. Me, smart mouth. Him, entitled OG. I didn't get my license until I was 19 because that's the age when driver's ed wasn't a requirement. I'm still stubborn. Been driving since 1982. One speeding ticket. One minor accident a week after I got my license...ice is a problem in Minnesota.
Jersey girl, here. We aren't allowed to get our driver's license until 17, but okay, go off, Thomas.
What if you live in a city with great public transportation. This person is UGH!

It is possible to have a remote job where you don't come into the office, but will visit client sites occasionally. I visited the office twice in 10 years. LOL
Yes but that's not the collective understanding of "remote." Additionally, it says "remote" in the header and then immediately retracts that by saying it's not a remote role. I just spent 1.5 years looking for a new role because I wanted out of my current situation. I saw MANY LinkedIn postings like this. It's entirely to get their posting to show up on lists job seekers run with "remote" as a criteria. And it's s****y.

Most of all these I have been reading - like this one - have to be from USA. Quite frightening to people looking for work. I feel very sad for them :(
It’s a nightmare, our drive for the “American dream” is also what is used against us. Always just out of reach, like a dollar on a string being tugged on every time you get too close. A lot of us just want the basic human wants, houses, cars, families, simplicity. To just live decent lives. When you gotta look for a job here pretty much everything is put on the table, and they scrounge around all the info on you and pick at it and dissect it like your a sample instead of living flesh and bone. You’re in such a vulnerable position because in reality you’re a grown adult who has responsibilities and a life, someone who is needing this income to support this life. They won’t see past what the papers tell them, or what the policy or sop states. To them you are an additional pay stub, a number, before they hired you they already figured out how much of an expense you were gone be. It’s cold…

For agency project managers, as with anyone working on agency-based client work, this isn't unusual, simply because of travel and project requirements. Working extra time is pretty much the norm. The level of description in this posting suggests an associate PM level, which in most US states is automatically an overtime-qualifying position. This would definitely be unlawful as posted anywhere I have worked.

Bribe The Hiring Manager After A Rejection?
Really. If you're wasting that much of my time, you aren't getting shît from me.
Is it a nice gesture? Yes. Is it tantamount to bribery? Yes. Think she'll be remembered? Only that she tried to bribe the hiring manager.
The "I cannot legally solicit a bribe, so here is an imaginary person as an example" option.
Oh yeah, she'll definitely be remembered.. likely as"I bet I can get another gift card out of her"
And accepting this would be grounds for dismissal at many companies. Don't do this! I know you get desperate. I wanted out of public education for the last 2 years. Spent 1.5 years looking, interviewing, etc. I get the desperation especially when the role sounds amazing. But please don't do this!

Got This Message From A Company's Recruiter Today
Received this from a recruiter today. Applied from their Facebook page where at no point did it mention that the position was in- office. For context, my family and I live and travel full- time in our RV, and I have worked remotely off and on for more than 3 years now, with nearly 10 years experience for the above mention position. Forward to the HR or above that even?
Unfortunately he probably assumed you were tyring to cover that you were homeless--which is ALSO a vile thing for him to do, to be clear--but I learned real quick to stonewall people about my living situation AND my transport, bc people assume if you don't have a car you're "unreliable" and that if they don't like the look of your address they'll judge you too....

This Is A Joke... Right?
For some context on how insane this is, a junior Front End Dev with 3+ years experience should typically be making around $70k a year at MINIMUM.
And you can do if you get this job. You just have to work 7,000 hours per year (approx. 20 hours per day). You’re cool with that, right?
Load More Replies...I make 11.25 an hour working at a grocery store. My friend earns more per hour working at Culver's, clearly there's something wrong here.
In Australia the average front end developer salary in Australia is $120,000 per year or $61.54 per hour. Entry-level positions start at $100,000 per year, while most experienced workers make up to $155,031 per year.
I certainly hope this posting is from about 4 or 5 years ago, as WA minimum wage is currently $15.74 for adults. Otherwise they are going to get in huge trouble with the state!
Either this is a very old job posting or the company is just ignoring the law. Seattle minimum wage is over $18 an hour. Even commission jobs have to base pay you minimum wage
Absurd. Front end devs in the US on average are marking WAY better money.

I did a job application a year back. I had JUST switched my career choice a year before that from Fast Food to Care Giver. I moved locations with 8 months experience and really great references. The job required 10! Professional references in that field. All with their professional emails their work phone and cell phones, the employer wanted ME to send questionnaires about me for my references to email back to the potential employer. It was a pre typed document I had to forward. The previous place I worked at because of the shift I was on we rotated between 3 of us per shift never met the rest of the staff for more than a few min. I wss more than qualified they only required 6 months and they wanted someone new in the field to train properly. Being an introvert is bad when looking for jobs.
