Unpopular opinions—chances are, we all have them. Whether we voice them or not is up to us entirely, but of course, some people cannot resist a chance to share their thoughts in some online threads, especially if you can hide behind an avatar and a username that probably isn’t going to expose your real identity to anyone (unless you don’t care, that is).

A popular Twitter user by the name of @jzux aka ‘trash jones’ asked her followers to share their most benign unpopular opinions. As expected, the thread was too hard to resist for a lot of the bird app users as the tweet went viral, receiving over 21.4K quote tweets as well as a lot of entertaining replies under the original post itself.

With that being said, if you’d like to see what is this all about, then think no further and scroll down below to see if you agree or disagree with some of the statements these people shared online.

Interestingly enough, the Georgia Institute of Technology has actually done studies in regard to unpopular opinions people have. Using the data found (that was based on a popular subreddit called R/unpopularopinion), Dasom Eom, Linh Hoang, and Gerry Oei came to some rather interesting conclusions based on their study.

Their research heavily links to a social phenomenon called the spiral of silence. To understand this better, first, you have to know what the theory of the spiral of silence entails. German political scientist Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann developed the spiral of silence theory, which combines political science and mass communication. It claims that a person's desire to express their own beliefs is influenced by how they perceive the distribution of the general public's opinions.

Making your whole identity about your mental illness is weird too. I understand that being deep down in the hole that is clinical depression makes it hard to see anything beyond that, but you get perfectly functioning humans build a whole new personality and lifestyle around a diagnosis.

The development of internet technology and online communication has recently prompted people to speak out and share their opinions in public online, shattering the barrier of the spiral of silence. Users can openly post and discuss socially undesirable opinions on the subreddit r/unpopularopinion. In this exact study, the forum was studied using the results from participant interviews and community observation. Then they also presented a descriptive analysis to demonstrate how the online space aids its users in overcoming the spiral of silence.

In conclusion, one of the issues with online spaces (especially Reddit) identified in the study is the recurrent re-uploading of similar viewpoints on the same subject. After a while, users may believe the viewpoint is common and widespread after repeatedly hearing similar unpopular thoughts, thus it becomes the popular idea in the end.

I’d much rather have neutral cream walls. May be boring, but you can add colour with pictures, rugs and accessories. Then if you want to change colour scheme you don’t have to repaint everything.

No, some people actually have problems eating certain kinds of food. It might be the texture that will make them gag or throw up. It might give them indigestion.

I'm constantly ridiculed beause a dwarf hamster saved my life. I was in the deepest depression ever, constantly considering suicide, but there was this litte cheeky fella who greeted me every morning. And suddenly the long, silent, lonely nights and evenings were filled with calming noises. We learned so much from each other and my hammy was so cute and forgiving of all the errors, I made in the beginning housing him. Over time we understood our needs better and I constantly tried to make his life better (more and more space added to his enclosure, got to know his favorite, healty snacks, grew weed on plates for him, so he could taste the freshest grass, built bridges or houses which fit him best). Yeah, I still miss him dearly and cry when I think of him. I had never a pet like him. You don't have to be big, to leave huge footprints in the world ❤️

Can we popularize sharing pictures of people's pet fish online? Properly caring for fish (not to mention the amount of time, money, and patience needed to maintain a tank) is an art that is under appreciated. I'd love to see more love for people's aquatic buddies online.

People should be proud of any animal they call a pet! I am not a fan of reptiles but my daughter wants one and when she gets her own place I will support her 100% and will call it my grand-reptile. I may never touch it but I will be proud of her as a responsible pet owner!

I adored my pet goldfish. I named them Sophia and Sputnik. Sophia pushed all the small frog ornaments into a corner and repeated it again after I spread the frogs out again. Once I forgot to spread them out, I saw Sophia spreaded it out themselves and pushed it back into a corner again. Very weird. Sputnik tends to swim around vertically rather than horizontally.

Yes, and also I believe pet owners should treat small pets like fish and hamsters just as well as they treat dogs and cats. Just because small pets are relatively cheaper to buy, doesn't mean they deserve to live in a horrible environment.

The belief in human exceptionalism (a myth, truly) has many folks even as a response to this stating absurd things such as "fish are decor," treating a living creature as lesser. As with every other animal, they are far more capable than we've given them credit for, and there's really nothing quite as fulfilling as using our big brains to determine what makes them content and offering that to them.

Part of the pride of being a dog owner is all the time one spent training your dog. A well behaved dog is a reflection of how much the owner really cares for it and takes the time to teach it good behavior. Cats and fish cannot really be trained much so I do not see that element of pride there.

I love fish. My older sisters friend got fishes and she flipped out. She was so happy. And my great aunt and uncle turned their pool into a joke for their fishes and I love them. It’s amazing. Fish are just as great. (And my great aunt and uncle had only two fish to stray with and that was always one of the first things we wanted to see. Tow fish, still great. I mean c’mon. They’re fish)

My daughter won a fish at a kids' fair when she was almost three. It was just her and I in a studio apartment at the time, but I got her a little fish tank and a SpongeBob fish house, etc. and we set it up between the living room and bedroom. I loved that fish. We ended up with about 3 different fish over the course of about 4 years. We loved them all. They all had personalities. Molly would swim back and forth and follow me as i vacuumed or walked around the room. One loved to be petted (we always washed our hands but it probably was still bad for him). And one I even gave CPR (but she only survived another couple of months after her near-death experience). We loved them all.

For years I had a 30 gallon aquarium with a variety of fish that, when anyone approached the tank, would scurry over to the visitor and take an interest. You could play with the fish without touching them. I never had to let them in or out of the house, they didn't make noise that annoyed neighbors, no one visiting me had allergies, but each fish had its own personality. Yes, I had "decorated" the tank with a lot of freshwater plants and rocks and wood to mimic a natural habitat that also added a "living art" motif to my living space, but the fish were the real stars and were far more entertaining and enjoyable than my cats.

I used to think so too. Then I learned that instead of infusing it with boiling water (100°C/212° F), I should use slightly cooler water (70°C/158°F), also the leaves shouldn't be in cup for too long. The difference is big. I'm not saying that he HAS to like green tea but for many people it's a matter of drinking badly prepared one.
