Unpopular opinions—chances are, we all have them. Whether we voice them or not is up to us entirely, but of course, some people cannot resist a chance to share their thoughts in some online threads, especially if you can hide behind an avatar and a username that probably isn’t going to expose your real identity to anyone (unless you don’t care, that is).

A popular Twitter user by the name of @jzux aka ‘trash jones’ asked her followers to share their most benign unpopular opinions. As expected, the thread was too hard to resist for a lot of the bird app users as the tweet went viral, receiving over 21.4K quote tweets as well as a lot of entertaining replies under the original post itself.

With that being said, if you’d like to see what is this all about, then think no further and scroll down below to see if you agree or disagree with some of the statements these people shared online.

Interestingly enough, the Georgia Institute of Technology has actually done studies in regard to unpopular opinions people have. Using the data found (that was based on a popular subreddit called R/unpopularopinion), Dasom Eom, Linh Hoang, and Gerry Oei came to some rather interesting conclusions based on their study.

Brains are not fully developed until the age of 25, so tend to agree with OP. However, this idea that one day you wake up and are "grown up" is ridiculous. I remember as a kid being excited about being an adult and having it all figured out - how naïve I was

So, they and their families should also receive all social benefits that children under 18 are receiving, workplaces should be more accomodating to their needs (as they are when it comes to late teens in my country) and they should be able to learn/study instead of working? If so, I'd gladly give my 'adult priviledges' back (if I'd still be under 25).

I agree. The cats that I have had over the years were considered to be full grown adults at 12 to 14 months of age. They still acted like freaking irrational, irresponsible, invincible maniacs sometimes.

Yes. Brain is physically not mature until age ~25. I don't think I was emotionally 'adult! Until 35ish even though I had a degree, knew my job well, and raised a child. I don't think you 'know yourself' until later . Not at 20.

This has started to be debunked. This notion was kind of created to make people feel good about treating mid-20 somethings like children. Let's face it, we treated "teenagers" like adults up until the early 20th century and they got along just fine.

The problem with this is that it's pretty class specific. Working class young adults often have as much responsibility as anyone ten years their senior

I kind of agree as long as you're not going to force young people to live as a child until 25, unable to make their own decisions, move out, leave school, and live their own life as an adult. Having wanted to do that at 12, it was a long 6 years, but I wouldn't have survived until 25.

It's funny. I live in the US and I see people saying this online all the time but I've never known one single person who got kicked out at 18. I live on the East Coast. Is it a thing in other parts of the country or one of those stereotypes that people just repeat? Legit curious since I know customs vary so greatly between regions.

I think there should be TWO milestone ages - "First Majority", at 18, where you are able to make you own decisions, join or leave school, get a job, acquire your own apartment, and enter into simple contracts. Things of that nature. Adulting Lite, if you will. No marriage, mortgage/financial, business, or military contracts. No "adult legal" substances - alcohol/tobacco/marijuana. All these things require experience and full mental maturity to handle. The ages between 18-25 should be a time to practice being a fully fledged adult with leeway to screw up without making destructive mistakes. Then "Second Majority" at 25, where you have full adult rights and privileges. (And of course exceptions could be made through the courts, much like we do with emancipated teens now. And just like those situations, they should be rare, but necessary.)

Before the Civil War in America, it used to be that a man had the right to keep his son at home until the boy turned 21. In homestead laws, a man couldn't even place a claim unless he was over 21. As for the daughters, unless she married, a daughter didn't reach her majority until her 25th birthday.

If you are not going to consider anyone an adult until they are 25, then you should also refrain from signing up anyone between 18 and 25 for the military. If you aren't old enough to be an adult, then you are still considered a minor and minors should not be allowed to enlist.

I thought of myself as an adult when I graduated high school. By 21 had traveled extensively (while working), owned a car, and had my own apartment. This idea that kids are kids until 25 is quite harmful. We are always growing as people, and enjoy child-like things... that doesn't make us children.

That way of thinking is more of a 21st century thing. We don't expect people to grow up now so they don't. The notion of "teenagers" is a relatively new idea. And the idea of "young adults" is only a couple of decades old. Now we infantilize people well into their 30s.

Their research heavily links to a social phenomenon called the spiral of silence. To understand this better, first, you have to know what the theory of the spiral of silence entails. German political scientist Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann developed the spiral of silence theory, which combines political science and mass communication. It claims that a person's desire to express their own beliefs is influenced by how they perceive the distribution of the general public's opinions.

The development of internet technology and online communication has recently prompted people to speak out and share their opinions in public online, shattering the barrier of the spiral of silence. Users can openly post and discuss socially undesirable opinions on the subreddit r/unpopularopinion. In this exact study, the forum was studied using the results from participant interviews and community observation. Then they also presented a descriptive analysis to demonstrate how the online space aids its users in overcoming the spiral of silence.

In conclusion, one of the issues with online spaces (especially Reddit) identified in the study is the recurrent re-uploading of similar viewpoints on the same subject. After a while, users may believe the viewpoint is common and widespread after repeatedly hearing similar unpopular thoughts, thus it becomes the popular idea in the end.

I think everybody feels that way, and most people thinks oh god no, I can't sing, when they are forced to celebrate a birthday this way, and even the birthday boy/girl will be embarished when everybody's eyes is turned on them. So why we do it is still a conundrum for me.

You're not supposed to eat them. you are supposed to look at the package and then throw it out in a few weeks. then they get buried and 3 days before easter, the peeps come out of the ground and appear on store shelves.

Roundabouts and 4 way stops are insanely common across Europe. It’s only Americans that seem to have a problem with them since they’re more rare.

I find it vice versa. Soft covers won't stay open, you have to break their spines or hold the pages down with a ruler, or use both hands. Hardcover you can leave open on your desk without using hands.

They play like the adults around them - my older daughter copies my wife and me, and we look after a baby so she wants to look after a baby too. I don't know how different it would be if we had a boy, or we didn't have a second child. Our older daughter also likes playing with cars and diggers, FWIW

Avocados are healthy and contain good ingredients. They taste good with pasta.

I used to think so too. Then I learned that instead of infusing it with boiling water (100°C/212° F), I should use slightly cooler water (70°C/158°F), also the leaves shouldn't be in cup for too long. The difference is big. I'm not saying that he HAS to like green tea but for many people it's a matter of drinking badly prepared one.
