The amount of biodiversity around us is incredible. Even if you live in a primarily urban environment, you’ll still encounter lots of different bugs and insects, different types of birds (not just pigeons!), probably rats, as well as stray dogs and cats.

If there are any parks or wooded areas in between your local skyscrapers, the odds are that you might also spot some squirrels, foxes, and raccoons. Of course, the specific animals you encounter are going to depend heavily on what part of the world you’re in!

I have peacefully coexisted with numerous critters that have taken up residence around and under places I have lived. Possums living under decks, hives of bees in lattice works, birds nesting in overhangs, and an old fox with a bum back leg dragging behind him living under an old shed in the backyard (we live in the country, so there’s an open field behind our backyard where his only competition for food is the pair of bald eagles who have hatched numerous chicks in the woods behind us, so Old Foxy is eating really well in his golden years). As long as we all stick to our parts of the house and property, and neither of us do any damage, I have no issue with sharing. So far, neither do they.

That's cute. We have a new generation of squirrels and birds since pre pandemic. I got a mug at a zoo last summer that says bird nerd. yup, i've turned into the crazy old lady next door that feeds everything, except i don't think i'm that old yet. I have a spot in the concrete on my patio that about every 2 years alternately houses moles or bumble bees. I don't understand it, i don't try to kill them, the bees never try and sting me, have bumped into me a few times , like we need a yield sign, which scares me because i am allergic but mainly to wasps so i'm bad about carrying my epipen

Is that a domestic fox that somehow got out and is now running wild, or do they really come in that color mutation?

    LakotaWolf (she/her)

1 year ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

The "silver fox" is just a melanistic form of the red fox. Definitely occurs naturally! Many fur farms would capture/breed the melanistic form since it looks exotic, but it's a natural color mutation. It's basically the same as how jaguars and leopards also have natural melanistic (black) color morphs in their populations.

If you live further away from the city center and you’re surrounded by more and more untouched nature, the animals you encounter are also going to be more varied. You might encounter entire groups of deer, different species of birds, insects, and amphibians.

If you’re living really remotely, you may even find some larger animals paying you a visit. Imagine drinking your first cup of morning coffee only to see a bear or a wolf walking past your front porch!

However, it isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. As people expand their urban environments, they massively affect the local wildlife population. Suddenly, animals are forced to flee their homes or look in other areas for food. Some fail to adapt altogether. Others are forced to change their entire behavior not only to survive but to thrive around people. (E.g., think of how wild raccoons live vs. suburban raccoons stealing food from trash cans.)

My husband is in pest control. We’re both huge animal lovers, and have rescued and adopted several pets over the years, who ended up living much happier, safer, and longer lives with us than they would have if we didn’t rescue them. He prefers to use humane traps for rodents, because he says some of the little wild mice are actually very cute and often really pretty little critters. He doesn’t like rats, but he still uses the humane traps for them as well, and has said he’s removed rats that actually had personality so he’s glad he went the humane route to remove them.

I swear bears have started imitating people. I saw a picture earlier today where a bear sat down and stared out over a body of water (a lake or river, couldn't tell from the pic), right next to a chair set up so someone could sit and look out over the water. I think the bear saw some doing that, and decided to do the same. I think this bear saw the mom's friend leaning on the rail and looking out and decided to give it a try.

Earth.org, reporting on the data collected by the World Wildlife Fund, notes that the most endangered animal in the world is the Amur Leopard. Between 2014 and 2015, barely 92 individuals were left in the world.

Now, this number is even lower, standing at a mere 84. These leopards are at risk mainly due to poachers who value their coats and boats to be sold to Asian medicine practitioners. Natural fires, as well as those caused by people, also destroy their habitats. Meanwhile, the changing climate means that they have less prey to catch.

At our family cabin, there was skunk that would walk by our house everyday doing his routine. We called him George. I would be at the grill and he would walk by and just say "Hi George", looked and kept walking. He did his thing, we did ours, no complications.

I have a toad who does that. He lives in my window well so I set up a little habitat for him. He has a house and a pool, and I feed him dried mealworms. When his dish is empty he sits on the window sill and jumps against the window. It's hilarious.

Rhinos are also incredibly vulnerable. Poachers and traditional Chinese medicine practitioners value their horns very much, which means that these animals are constantly under threat of being hunted down. Unfortunately, their horns are very lucrative.

The black rhino, Javan rhino, and Sumatran rhino are three of five rhino species that are among the most endangered species on Earth. For instance, there are barely 60 Javan rhinos left. Meanwhile, the black rhino population stands at 5.5k.

Trash Pandas may be cute but they are destructive as hell. One of my Sister's had just sold her house in Kentucky when a couple of raccoons got into the crawlspace under her house and caused thousands of dollars in damage to duct work and insulation. They had to repair all of it before they could close on the house and finish the sell.

Their teeth are razor sharp, a raccoon cut off the strap of my bagpack in an attempt to drag it out of the tent at night. I say Cut, not Bit - because it looked as If a surgeon had done it with his scalpel. Scary. And they also eat birds etc.. But they look so cute!

Does will often do this, hide their fawns and then return to collect them. If you ever find one leave it. If the mother does not return during the day then call an animal rescue. Offer water, not food. (This goes for all animals in need of rescue.)

There are no easy fixes. If you want to protect wildlife on a global scale, you’d have to change how people interact with nature so they can co-exist with animals.

That would probably include fundamentally changing the perspective on trade and economics: instead of limitless growth and profits, everyone would ideally aim for sustainable growth.

Meanwhile, we would all ideally change how we look at a life worth living, pursuing deep relationships instead of materialistic wants. That means consuming less, buying fewer products, changing our eating habits, and recycling more.

As a result, we’d need to destroy fewer natural habitats for farms, factories, mines, and homes. The more people vote with their wallets, the more big corporations will have to adapt and embrace a greener mindset.

A lot of museums used to put their back legs on backwards when being taxidermied because they had never seen a live one and thought they had been damaged.

There are a lot of black bears where I live. For the most part they aren't aggressive unless provoked (who's gonna do that??). We had a mom with 3 cubs that made regular visits to our deck in search of bird seed. We had a hummingbird feeder, and we watched one of the cubs climb up on the deck rail, tip the hummingbird feeder back so the nectar spilled out in his mouth (and all over his fur). How he figured out how to do that I don't know.

One day, my husband came in from mowing the front yard and was in a bit of a panic. "I think I mowed a bunch of baby bunnies," he said, freaking out, "there was fur everywhere!" Of course, this description made ME panic a little, so we ran outside to look. The bunnies, fortunately, were all fine... and the hole was dug deep enough and the "fur everywhere" was actually just the nest covering that their mom must have laid down. We covered it up and made sure to check for bunnies before mowing in the future. The next year, there was a nest inside the fenced backyard... had to build a small temporary fence (with a small mama-sized entrance) so the dogs didn't eat them. Darn rabbits and their poor choice of nest location... 🙄

I live in NZ and have seen a fully grown seal sitting on train tracks. It must've moved before a train came. I definitely called it a dummy as I drove past.

The road and train tracks follow the coastline where the seal colony is, and they can climb up the beach edge, over the road, and on to the tracks.

I think this one might also have that nasty wet bottom disease that needs treatment.. I hope I am wrong. Our koalas are being culled and threatened daily by urban greed.

WHy was it there? What was it trying to do? Was it trying to get away from a preditor, looking for shade, food, or water? Was it fleeing from another animal? Or do dumb humans just think the animals are being "cute"? Humans are awful!

This! We (from the USA) lived in Brisbane for 3 years. Our sponsor told us not to expect kangaroos in everyone's yards. Sure enough, middle of city, found one sitting as calm as you please in the middle of the street. It was so funny.

I live in Australia, and I will never forget the night my dad called to warn me that there was a kangaroo on the driveway (which is fenced off from the garden). I went out to have a look, not realising the roo had just jumped clear over the fence. But someone else DID realise, and that was the dog. He chased that poor thing around and around the garden at full tilt, out of his mind with excitement. We eventually managed to grab him and let the kangaroo through the gate to freedom, but for months after that the dog kept hopefully looking out for Round Two. And might I add, we live in the middle of the suburbs. We also get the odd waddling echidna and once a bigass monitor lizard sitting on the garbage bins and glaring at me.

On my last ship in the Navy, we got underway from Charleston for some training with other ships, and the air detachment found that an owl had gotten into the hanger before we left. Five days later we went back in to port, and about an hour later our guest flew by the quarterdeck on its way off the ship. "I'm checking out now, nice cruise."

When I was in the Navy, we were 1,200 miles off the coast of Oregon and woke up one morning to one of these on the Mast. We took him food and water and he rode with us for over a week. When we refueled with a bigger ship, he jumped to them, so radioed over what he likes to eat and how to feed him. We were going back to Hawaii. the fuel ship was going back to Seattle and closer to his home. He must have gotten blown out to sea by a storm.

We found baby bunnies in our garden. We watched the mama come and go through a camera we put out there. Then one night, to our horror, a fat stray cat came and massacred them all. Thankfully, the camera didn't catch that part. We've seen that cat a lot at night, someone is letting that monster out at night.

They can destroy your lawn/garden with burrowing, and can undermine foundations of buildings if their burrows get extensive enough. They also eat many commonly-grown garden veggies, so if one has a garden, the groundhog could eat all of the veggies/fruits/plants growing there. They're not always a nuisance, but they CAN be. I hope that OP's dad was planning on relocating the groundhog after capture.

I don't jump scare easily but I got startled once when I picked up a bat. In the house, walking down the hallway. I see small ball of dryer lint or maybe a small grey sock on the floor so being helpful I picked it up. The startle was when the lint started squirming and turned out it was a bat. I just never expected a bat in the house so wasn't even thinking in terms of something alive. (I know what a mouse looks like)

I absolutely love bats, especially brown bats. They are SO soft, their wings feel cool, and they eat thousands of skeeters. I know there's a chance or rabies so I'm not gloming onto wild ones I see, just watching. Love them.

We had a pair of overalls hanging on the front veranda for years that we left there because it was so popular for bat snoozes. After trying to move them about three times, and finding a bat every time, we just left them as a bat hotel.

It looks exactly like an Australian freshwater crayfish, or "yabby", as we call them! When I was a kid I kept one as a pet. It was so cool how you would catch them from the local creek and they'd be all brown and covered in algae but after a few weeks of living in clean tank water they'd turn this beautiful blue! (They're also apparently quite tasty).

That is untrue. They are *resistant* to rabies (as marsupials, their body temperature is lower than that of most mammals), but they CAN get rabies. It's just extremely rare.

Many cities are encouraging the nesting of these guys as a natural weapon against pigeons. Detroit has had them for years but with the overpopulation of pigeons they could probably support peregrine couples in the thousands and still have an overabundance.

My Dad went to battle against a possum that moved into his roof. Final battle was installing sensor lights that would shine on possum when walking across wire into roof. Hopefully making it flee. Dad got home to lights blinding him as he drove towards garage. The possum had pushed the lights down. Dad gave up and had a new flatmate.

Same thing happened to my Chihuahua. He encountered a land crab right outside our front door when I unknowingly opened the door to go for a walk. They went to battle and before I could break it up, my little guy raced upstairs screaming the whole way and refused to come out from under the bed. After 30 mins of calming him down, he finally emerged with a claw attached to each of his front paws. It was quite the ordeal to get them off but eventually I did and found there were no serious injuries. I then raced down to look for a crab missing his front claws but he was long gone. I have since read that crabs can detach their front claws in battle and grow them back. I was relieved to know he was probably chilling somewhere waiting for his new claws to emerge. At least I hope that is what happened. Meanwhile, the chihuahua in question learned absolutely nothing from the experience; he still tries to go for crabs who dare to encroach on his property.

Possums in US are definitely not cute like these ones.

Ours (in the US) are "opossums" technically. People shorten it to "possums", but they're not closely related.

There are a few lizard species in the UK but that looks like a newt. Lizards would have more defined and elongated toes with small claws on their finger tips.

They're easy to tame, and quite sweet and affectionate. People don't realize this because they're so ugly nobody wants one as a companion.

That kind of looks like one of those dyed chicks some folks get at Easter and then get tired of them because they are not really planning to raise chickens.

What an ignorant thing to do... Buy artificially dyed chicks-living creatures- only to discard them.

Keep it. They'll eat most of your leftovers, then when it's grown up you can eat it's eggs. If it's a rooster, therefore no eggs, well, you know the rest. It'll save you money at the butcher shop.

Probably an egg laying breed rooster. The female chicks are red/orange and the males are yellow/white and are usually "discarded". Also looks like it's already getting a comb so probably rooster.

One time I was crabblng - hobby level - manual cates and a small inflatable boat. I was sitting in the boat waiting and picked up a random piece of seaweed floating by. On it was a TINY baby crab maybe an 1/8" or 1/4" across. So tiny I had to stare at it to realize it was a crab. I guess it was pretty newly hatched and was just hanging on getting what drifted by until it was big enough to go hunt food on its own.

DO NOT TOUCH. Unlike other mammals, when bats get rabies they become very lethargic and can fall to the ground. Otherwise they avoid being on the ground at any time.

I heard that, even if they are not sick, they cannot take off from the ground. With gloves, very carefully, put them in a higher place like a branch and see if they eventually take off.
