This Little Guy Started Hanging Around My Brother While He Was Working On A Car. I Believe It’s An American Kestrel. Which Means My Brother Made Friends With A Falcon
That's awesome! Having a random animal just take to someone like that is really cool and sweet.
I Think Someone Spilled A Bag Of Ducks Near Aisle 6
I got a mama duck just outside my door at work. She's laying on at least 8 eggs (that I could count)
I wonder why momma duck needed to bring her ducklings into a human place? Something bad outside?
Urban Fox Doing A Full Sploot In My Sunny Scottish Garden
He's making the most of the 2 days of summer we get in Scotland, it could be snowing tomorrow.
I once saw a video where a guy found a wild fox napping in the woods. he approached and gently stroked its head. the fox seemed to be enjoying it at first, but then after a few seconds it woke up and ran in a panic xD
The amount of biodiversity around us is incredible. Even if you live in a primarily urban environment, you’ll still encounter lots of different bugs and insects, different types of birds (not just pigeons!), probably rats, as well as stray dogs and cats.
If there are any parks or wooded areas in between your local skyscrapers, the odds are that you might also spot some squirrels, foxes, and raccoons. Of course, the specific animals you encounter are going to depend heavily on what part of the world you’re in!
The Neighborhood Fox And Her Kits Are Living Under My Front Deck Right Now
I have peacefully coexisted with numerous critters that have taken up residence around and under places I have lived. Possums living under decks, hives of bees in lattice works, birds nesting in overhangs, and an old fox with a bum back leg dragging behind him living under an old shed in the backyard (we live in the country, so there’s an open field behind our backyard where his only competition for food is the pair of bald eagles who have hatched numerous chicks in the woods behind us, so Old Foxy is eating really well in his golden years). As long as we all stick to our parts of the house and property, and neither of us do any damage, I have no issue with sharing. So far, neither do they.
That's cute. We have a new generation of squirrels and birds since pre pandemic. I got a mug at a zoo last summer that says bird nerd. yup, i've turned into the crazy old lady next door that feeds everything, except i don't think i'm that old yet. I have a spot in the concrete on my patio that about every 2 years alternately houses moles or bumble bees. I don't understand it, i don't try to kill them, the bees never try and sting me, have bumped into me a few times , like we need a yield sign, which scares me because i am allergic but mainly to wasps so i'm bad about carrying my epipen

Rare "Silver Fox" At My House Today
A fox and a racoon after a ride in the blender...🦊 🤹🏽 🦝
Load More Replies...Alright, I’m gonna use this in my book. Their name will be… (help any ideas?)
Vulpe? Luna, flash, steel, sir foxalot, snoop, quicksilver, foxanne, kitsune, ylvis..... I guess I need to know more about this fox's personality :) edit: sterling
Load More Replies...Is that a domestic fox that somehow got out and is now running wild, or do they really come in that color mutation?
The "silver fox" is just a melanistic form of the red fox. Definitely occurs naturally! Many fur farms would capture/breed the melanistic form since it looks exotic, but it's a natural color mutation. It's basically the same as how jaguars and leopards also have natural melanistic (black) color morphs in their populations.
Load More Replies...If you live further away from the city center and you’re surrounded by more and more untouched nature, the animals you encounter are also going to be more varied. You might encounter entire groups of deer, different species of birds, insects, and amphibians.
If you’re living really remotely, you may even find some larger animals paying you a visit. Imagine drinking your first cup of morning coffee only to see a bear or a wolf walking past your front porch!
Mountain Lions Moving Back Into Boulder During Lockdown
But make sure to hide the kitties. (The small, compact versions.)

Illegal in most states to kill them. Doing so would cost a person their hunting license, and a substantial (250,000 dollar plus) fine.
Load More Replies...However, it isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. As people expand their urban environments, they massively affect the local wildlife population. Suddenly, animals are forced to flee their homes or look in other areas for food. Some fail to adapt altogether. Others are forced to change their entire behavior not only to survive but to thrive around people. (E.g., think of how wild raccoons live vs. suburban raccoons stealing food from trash cans.)

Load More Replies...My husband is in pest control. We’re both huge animal lovers, and have rescued and adopted several pets over the years, who ended up living much happier, safer, and longer lives with us than they would have if we didn’t rescue them. He prefers to use humane traps for rodents, because he says some of the little wild mice are actually very cute and often really pretty little critters. He doesn’t like rats, but he still uses the humane traps for them as well, and has said he’s removed rats that actually had personality so he’s glad he went the humane route to remove them.
I'd have an ornament made in his likeness and place it on the tree every year as a reminder and funny story. It would also be funny if ALL the ornaments were this mouse in different poses.

I feel like there's a mug of coffee on the railing. Just starting the day with a cuppa, taking in the view.
I swear bears have started imitating people. I saw a picture earlier today where a bear sat down and stared out over a body of water (a lake or river, couldn't tell from the pic), right next to a chair set up so someone could sit and look out over the water. I think the bear saw some doing that, and decided to do the same. I think this bear saw the mom's friend leaning on the rail and looking out and decided to give it a try.
Earth.org, reporting on the data collected by the World Wildlife Fund, notes that the most endangered animal in the world is the Amur Leopard. Between 2014 and 2015, barely 92 individuals were left in the world.
Now, this number is even lower, standing at a mere 84. These leopards are at risk mainly due to poachers who value their coats and boats to be sold to Asian medicine practitioners. Natural fires, as well as those caused by people, also destroy their habitats. Meanwhile, the changing climate means that they have less prey to catch.

Mom Had A Stranger On Her Deck This Morning
I'm thinking, what a powerful omen. Beautiful. Velvet still on the antlers.
Rhinos are also incredibly vulnerable. Poachers and traditional Chinese medicine practitioners value their horns very much, which means that these animals are constantly under threat of being hunted down. Unfortunately, their horns are very lucrative.
The black rhino, Javan rhino, and Sumatran rhino are three of five rhino species that are among the most endangered species on Earth. For instance, there are barely 60 Javan rhinos left. Meanwhile, the black rhino population stands at 5.5k.
I Came Into My Kitchen To Find A Lizard Using A Sponge As A Raft In The Sink. I Live In New Mexico
We have here one kind of lizards called dracs or salamandras , and they eats mosquitos so if you see one we respect a lot , especially in summer
Geckos & lizards eat huge amounts of insects! I read up on how to humanely encourage them to move house - spray ceiling with nitrogen rich fertiliser. A Family Of Raccoons In My Yard
I really like raccoons, but my vet told me some awful stories about what he's seen them do to cats :(.
Trash Pandas may be cute but they are destructive as hell. One of my Sister's had just sold her house in Kentucky when a couple of raccoons got into the crawlspace under her house and caused thousands of dollars in damage to duct work and insulation. They had to repair all of it before they could close on the house and finish the sell.
yes-- raccoons are quite cute, but that mask does actually hide a skilled and relentless predator. One was able to open a door and kill a dozen baby chicks.
Their parents are close by. Hope you do not have cats, they eat cats and small dogs.
Their teeth are razor sharp, a raccoon cut off the strap of my bagpack in an attempt to drag it out of the tent at night. I say Cut, not Bit - because it looked as If a surgeon had done it with his scalpel. Scary. And they also eat birds etc.. But they look so cute!
Bornean and Sumatran orangutans are also in trouble. There were roughly 230k+ orangutans in the wild a hundred years ago. However, due to deforestation for palm oil, they’ve been losing their habitats. As it stands now, there are 104.7k Bornean orangutans and around 13.8k Sumatran orangutans living.
This Fox That Lives At The Top Of My Granny's Hedge
Reminds me of the huge hedge that was near my school as a kid. Years of kids playing in it had worn tunnels through it so you could look out from the top like this! Sadly, it has since been destroyed by fire😢
Why does the second picture remind me of the Homer Simpson bush meme

The Wife Opened The Back Door And Immediately Gasped, Then Shut It. A Little Guy Had Been Stashed There By His Mommy For About 10 Hours Before She Came Back And Got Him
Does will often do this, hide their fawns and then return to collect them. If you ever find one leave it. If the mother does not return during the day then call an animal rescue. Offer water, not food. (This goes for all animals in need of rescue.)
My yard is used as a baby deer depot!! There's lots of trees and bushes to hide from the eagles and the sun.
Load More Replies...A startling, enchanting way to find that you're a safe house for wildlife!
There are no easy fixes. If you want to protect wildlife on a global scale, you’d have to change how people interact with nature so they can co-exist with animals.
That would probably include fundamentally changing the perspective on trade and economics: instead of limitless growth and profits, everyone would ideally aim for sustainable growth.

Surprise Snoozing Seal Pup
From the reddit post: This little pup was found taking a nap on the porch of a Wellington family's home early this week. It had been on a bit of a mission, climbing up the seawall stairs, crossing a road, hiking up a footpath, a driveway, and finally another set of stairs, before reaching its nap spot.
Load More Replies...Per OP, this was during New Zealand’s “silly seal season” where pups venture away from their colonies. This pup was relocated by animal rescue to a safer place on the beach.
He looks a bit malnourished, I hope op contacted wildlife protection services
When it's laying like that, you can really see seals used to have legs in the past of their evolution
Google their skeletons, they totally had legs...they still have them in there!
Load More Replies...Meanwhile, we would all ideally change how we look at a life worth living, pursuing deep relationships instead of materialistic wants. That means consuming less, buying fewer products, changing our eating habits, and recycling more.
As a result, we’d need to destroy fewer natural habitats for farms, factories, mines, and homes. The more people vote with their wallets, the more big corporations will have to adapt and embrace a greener mindset.

Load More Replies...At the end of the day, we’ll still see quick economic expansion so long as it’s profitable. If you’re angry about pollution, destroyed habitats, and climate change, then you can and should look at the problem as a political one.
Vote for political representatives who represent your values. Boycott companies and brands that go against what you believe in. Write to your current political representatives asking them to take a tougher stance regarding conservation.

Two Baby Bears On My Grandparents' Deck
Americans getting so bothered about Australia’s apparent “dangerous animals”. You guy have flipping bears just wandering on up to your deck and swimming in your pools! Bears!! Like, seriously, wth???
There are a lot of black bears where I live. For the most part they aren't aggressive unless provoked (who's gonna do that??). We had a mom with 3 cubs that made regular visits to our deck in search of bird seed. We had a hummingbird feeder, and we watched one of the cubs climb up on the deck rail, tip the hummingbird feeder back so the nectar spilled out in his mouth (and all over his fur). How he figured out how to do that I don't know.

It seems to be wearing leather anklets, so this is probably an owl belonging to a falconer. Why it is in the hotel room though I don't know.
I spotted that and thought the same. We had owls many years ago and that is definitely an indication that this is a domestic owl.
Load More Replies...That looks like it might be someone's pet with the little ankle ties. Confused as to how someone forgets they brought a pet, though.
Ty I couldn't think of the word and went with anklets 🤦♀️
Load More Replies...That needs to be reported for 2 reasons: 1. that is a protected animal, 2. abandoning it is animal abuse and as of 2019 all animal abuses are federal crimes. The person should not just be allowed to walk away scott-free!

I Found A Baby Rabbit While Mowing The Lawn
Put it back where you found it. Mama rabbits hide their babies in shallow covered burrows. She will be back to feed it/them.
that is big enough to be on its own. I found one that size once. I thought it needed help. Did some research and found out they are really quite small when they leave the nest and folks thinking like I did is apparently a common mistake.
Still has the white spot on his head, so he hasn't been on his own for long. Littermates were probably close by.
Load More Replies...One day, my husband came in from mowing the front yard and was in a bit of a panic. "I think I mowed a bunch of baby bunnies," he said, freaking out, "there was fur everywhere!" Of course, this description made ME panic a little, so we ran outside to look. The bunnies, fortunately, were all fine... and the hole was dug deep enough and the "fur everywhere" was actually just the nest covering that their mom must have laid down. We covered it up and made sure to check for bunnies before mowing in the future. The next year, there was a nest inside the fenced backyard... had to build a small temporary fence (with a small mama-sized entrance) so the dogs didn't eat them. Darn rabbits and their poor choice of nest location... 🙄
I apologize to all of BP and your families but that's a *baby voice* wittle wabbit
I nicknamed a rabbit that lived in the field near my place Tater, because she was about the size of a large baked potato, and was about the same color. A few days later, I saw her with her kits, and made jokes about Tater's Tots.

When You Spend Your Whole Life Rolling Your Eyes At Ignorant Foreigners Thinking You Have Kangaroos In Your Front Yard, And You Live In The Suburbs
This! We (from the USA) lived in Brisbane for 3 years. Our sponsor told us not to expect kangaroos in everyone's yards. Sure enough, middle of city, found one sitting as calm as you please in the middle of the street. It was so funny.
"They don't normally do that. *eyeroll* ...except for Bernie. He likes to make me look stupid, the little jerk"
Load More Replies...I live in Australia, and I will never forget the night my dad called to warn me that there was a kangaroo on the driveway (which is fenced off from the garden). I went out to have a look, not realising the roo had just jumped clear over the fence. But someone else DID realise, and that was the dog. He chased that poor thing around and around the garden at full tilt, out of his mind with excitement. We eventually managed to grab him and let the kangaroo through the gate to freedom, but for months after that the dog kept hopefully looking out for Round Two. And might I add, we live in the middle of the suburbs. We also get the odd waddling echidna and once a bigass monitor lizard sitting on the garbage bins and glaring at me.
I live in Sydney and I don't see any kangaroos around, but once I stayed the night in a hotel in the Hunter Valley and on the grounds there was a group of kangaroos every 50 metres or so.

Yes they did. God help you. Time to call a local apiculturist for a humane removal. Such a find is very important. It is also important to give the Apiarist a timeframe when the bees first appeared. Somehow a queen got stuck in between the screen and door.

40 Miles Offshore, A Wild Owl Appeared
On my last ship in the Navy, we got underway from Charleston for some training with other ships, and the air detachment found that an owl had gotten into the hanger before we left. Five days later we went back in to port, and about an hour later our guest flew by the quarterdeck on its way off the ship. "I'm checking out now, nice cruise."
Barn owls must be fantastic fliers. They're one of very few bird species found on all six continents, from North America all the way to Australia.
When I was in the Navy, we were 1,200 miles off the coast of Oregon and woke up one morning to one of these on the Mast. We took him food and water and he rode with us for over a week. When we refueled with a bigger ship, he jumped to them, so radioed over what he likes to eat and how to feed him. We were going back to Hawaii. the fuel ship was going back to Seattle and closer to his home. He must have gotten blown out to sea by a storm.
Uhh, owl from Beauxbatons here, I need to send this message to Hogwarts. How long until I get there if I hitch a ride on this, and how long if I fly?

We found baby bunnies in our garden. We watched the mama come and go through a camera we put out there. Then one night, to our horror, a fat stray cat came and massacred them all. Thankfully, the camera didn't catch that part. We've seen that cat a lot at night, someone is letting that monster out at night.
We get some similar looking fuzzies in our neighborhood. I can see D-land fireworks from the backyard but our neighborhood is in the hills above. We have bunnies, coyotes. . owls and squirrels.
There is nothing cuter than a bundle of baby bunnies…well, maybe baby bunnies when they discover they can binky, or maybe snuggling a baby bunny, or maybe a baby bunny sleeping with its little white tummy exposed or maybe.. you get the gist of it, I love bunnies!

This Groundhog Taunting My Dad By Sitting On His Trap
They can destroy your lawn/garden with burrowing, and can undermine foundations of buildings if their burrows get extensive enough. They also eat many commonly-grown garden veggies, so if one has a garden, the groundhog could eat all of the veggies/fruits/plants growing there. They're not always a nuisance, but they CAN be. I hope that OP's dad was planning on relocating the groundhog after capture.

I don't jump scare easily but I got startled once when I picked up a bat. In the house, walking down the hallway. I see small ball of dryer lint or maybe a small grey sock on the floor so being helpful I picked it up. The startle was when the lint started squirming and turned out it was a bat. I just never expected a bat in the house so wasn't even thinking in terms of something alive. (I know what a mouse looks like)
I absolutely love bats, especially brown bats. They are SO soft, their wings feel cool, and they eat thousands of skeeters. I know there's a chance or rabies so I'm not gloming onto wild ones I see, just watching. Love them.

Bats are common where I live in our city. They live in the big, old trees that line the streets. I've had bats come down the chimneys in my apartment and I'd have to help them get back outside.

It looks exactly like an Australian freshwater crayfish, or "yabby", as we call them! When I was a kid I kept one as a pet. It was so cool how you would catch them from the local creek and they'd be all brown and covered in algae but after a few weeks of living in clean tank water they'd turn this beautiful blue! (They're also apparently quite tasty).
Oh, and they have the coolest scientific name: CHERAX DESTRUCTOR.

That is untrue. They are *resistant* to rabies (as marsupials, their body temperature is lower than that of most mammals), but they CAN get rabies. It's just extremely rare.

My Cat Came Home With A Crayfish Claw Clamped To Her Paw
I think the crab and the rest of its body would disagree. Lol!
Load More Replies...Same thing happened to my Chihuahua. He encountered a land crab right outside our front door when I unknowingly opened the door to go for a walk. They went to battle and before I could break it up, my little guy raced upstairs screaming the whole way and refused to come out from under the bed. After 30 mins of calming him down, he finally emerged with a claw attached to each of his front paws. It was quite the ordeal to get them off but eventually I did and found there were no serious injuries. I then raced down to look for a crab missing his front claws but he was long gone. I have since read that crabs can detach their front claws in battle and grow them back. I was relieved to know he was probably chilling somewhere waiting for his new claws to emerge. At least I hope that is what happened. Meanwhile, the chihuahua in question learned absolutely nothing from the experience; he still tries to go for crabs who dare to encroach on his property.

One time I was crabblng - hobby level - manual cates and a small inflatable boat. I was sitting in the boat waiting and picked up a random piece of seaweed floating by. On it was a TINY baby crab maybe an 1/8" or 1/4" across. So tiny I had to stare at it to realize it was a crab. I guess it was pretty newly hatched and was just hanging on getting what drifted by until it was big enough to go hunt food on its own.

DO NOT TOUCH. Unlike other mammals, when bats get rabies they become very lethargic and can fall to the ground. Otherwise they avoid being on the ground at any time.
I heard that, even if they are not sick, they cannot take off from the ground. With gloves, very carefully, put them in a higher place like a branch and see if they eventually take off.
