50 Of The Most Interesting And Bizarre Things People Have Found In The Forest (New Pics)
In some ways, the forest is like the ocean, a vast expanse where you can get lost while traversing. At some point, you will stumble upon something interesting (to say the least), like the images in these photos.
Some of these odd discoveries are byproducts of natural occurrences. Others, however, may make you wonder about the fascinating backstory of how these objects landed in this neck of the woods (in the most literal sense).

Even if it isn't, as long as the carving doesn't disrupt the bark completely around the tree, It'll be fine
Load More Replies...How much do we know about our forests? As it turns out, even scientists aren't sure. Most have mere estimates of how much life exists in those tree canopies around the globe.
According to the World Wildlife Fund, here's an approximate: "We don't know how many tree species there are on Earth, but scientists estimate there are about 63,000 known species. There could be as many as 9,000 tree species still unknown to science."
A Whole Other World I Found In A Beer Bottle Laying In The Woods
The inhabitants sit up at night, wondering if there are other bottles in the multiverse, and if so, whether they can support life.
Woah.. forest in a bottle. Always thought ships in bottles were overrated! (just kidding)
I have seen this image before, labeled as "Fairy garden in a broken beer bottle found in the woods". I loved it and stole it for my backgrounds collection.

These forest finds are just some of the many usually unearthed by hikers or experts. In 2023, a group of archeologists found the remains of a Yotvingian settlement. The Yotvingians were an ancient Baltic tribe that existed until the 1400s.
According to a report by the Miami Herald, archeologists from the University of Warsaw found traces of Yotvingian inhabitants through the style of bronze jewelry they found in a Polish forest. They eventually discovered jewelry dating back to the 10th and 12th centuries.
Mirror Sculptures Reflect The Forest By Scottish Artist Rob Mulholland
This is a bit freaky. I wouldn't want to come across them if I was walking at night.
Beautiful, but I would think they are dangerous to flying owls and birds, as well as people.
Black Cat On A Leather Chair In The Woods
One time I was on a random back road. There was a little paved path going up to a leather armchair in the middle of a pretty thick little woods. On the arm of the chair was a black cat, bathing in the sun's rays. It felt unreal, like straight out of a book. I didn’t dare get any closer, as I figured that a witch must live nearby.
Hope that's my little boy in his next life, blissful sleeping in the sun on a comfy chair. Miss you Shasta cat xxx
Of course it completely ignores the cat furniture to the left of the chair.
That's just a symbolic gesture; a means to make the space more homey.

These Bendy Trees I Saw On My Walk This Afternoon
Last time I saw this photo it had the caption, "I finally found the forest from where Home Depot sources their lumber." XD
Seems like they were flattened by a flood long ago and survived by adapting to their new shape.
They can only guess. Soil/slope creep, wind or water flattening them at a young age, sustained high winds throughout most of their lives, etc. All of those cause this to happen. This being Wales in a bog doesn't even narrow it down.

My Dad Made A Solid Oak Secret Door For People To Discover On Their Walks
Someone does this on a trail I walk and I leave little gifts there, like crystals or painted rocks. The weird thing is, the next day they are gone.

If you think seeing these images randomly on a hike or random walk through the woods is already jolting enough, try spending a night in a creepy forest. That was what writer Sophie Buchan did in Transylvania’s Hoia-Baciu Forest. And she described her experience in an article in The Independent.
The Hoia-Baciu has a deep history, beginning with a UFO sighting in 1968. From then on, it became a tourist attraction. However, according to Buchan’s article, these visitors suddenly experienced strange occurrences.
Stumbled Upon A Fallen Totem In The Forest In British Columbia, Canada
Oooh, I wonder how old it is?! My tribe (Tlingit) spans from southeast Alaska into British Columbia, and people of my tribe were the first to make totem poles. Glad that this is still in ancestral land. My family is from Alaska

Abandoned Pet Cemetery In The Woods Of Freetown, Massachusetts
It's sad, but in a way kind of sweet because it's clear how much all these pets were loved. And Cinder Lee lived to be an old doggie!

According to Buchan, some of the “strange symptoms” that people supposedly go through include “nausea, anxiety, the feeling of being watched – and the failure of electronic devices.” Joggers also reportedly witness ongoing ectoplasms.
Buchan also shared a story from her guide, Alex, who, along with his colleague Marius, experienced something out of this world. “Well, there was a man who went crazy, thinking he’d met a demon. He’d just got a massive tattoo of a demon on his chest, to ward off demons.”

Giant Puffball Mushroom My Sister Found In The Woods
I’ve always wanted to try puffballs!!I found like a dozen of them between baseball and football size one time, they were gorgeous, but sadly, they were at a dog park and therefore definitely not trustworthy. Edit: normal football not American football
You need to know the medium they grow on. Giant puffballs such as in the photo are grassland (sometimes they forget where they are supposed to grow and you might find them occasionally in the woods). Your best bed is fields outside of the city, not parks. In parks you'll find smaller species and the the woods you'll usually find common puffballs, stump balls, etc (careful with the eartballs) it does also depend on where you live as species vary from country to country.
Load More Replies...Yes they are pretty good. You can bread and deep fry the slices, then they are crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside.

I'm NOT an expert by any means, but somehow this looks like a sword blank (before it is made into a sword) or a simple replica to me? I may be totally wrong though.
It looks like it’s actually in pretty good shape, maybe it’s from a LARP?
Too cool. Was it laying on the ground or on that branch? Or was it sticking out of a stone?
I would absolutely keep and treasure that sword forever if I found that. Maybe build an entire cottage in the pods centered around it… we’ll see :)

I wonder if train tracks work in the same way as rivers do, in order to bring you back to civilisation if you get lost. Only problem would be if it brought you to an abandoned town or cave instead, I guess…
Two blondes were standing over some tracks in the woods. "I think it's a bear" "I think it's a cougar" they were still arguing when the train hit them....
According to Buchan, Alex isn’t a fan of sleeping in the forests because of his fair share of chilling experiences. During his very first camping trip, he abruptly woke up to the sound of “a very loud hoof noise,” which he thought came either from a horse or a “particularly large deer.”
“Every time they would stick their head out from the tent to investigate, the noise would stop,” she wrote, recalling Alex’s experiences. “The next time, he slept in a hammock to get closer to whatever was causing the sound. His visit was cut short when a bat smashed into his face.”
First Gold Find For The Year And The Weirdest Find Of All Time
I was in the woods detecting in an area with heavy iron today (1800s nails in the ground, scrap iron bits, and sheet metal bits), and to my amazement, found dentures made of gold. Not sure how old they are, but my guess is somewhere in the 1800s up to the 1940s, since the homes which were once nearby were gone by the mid-1940s.
Cool! Considering the current price of gold is over $2370, that's going to worth a bit.
Some ghost is floating around, trying to find his teeth.
With such a finding, what’s the appropriate approach? Should it be left there? Should it be taken to a museum? Should it be sold for the metal?
Leave a note that you found it and when with photos for a museum, then cash it in!
Load More Replies...The shape of those teeth is so strange. Imagine them in someone’s mouth! They’d look like a puppet.
If they're that old, this is how they were made. I'm sure animal teeth were used and filed down. I know WAY back in the day, George Washingtons dentures were all metal with a spring on both jaw sides and the teeth were a mix of horse, cow and human. They're in a museum and there's pics online. They look so painfully dreadful - but it helped George eat. He couldn't speak well at all with them in and the pain made him unable to close his mouth well - plus being so awkward and big, it made his lower jaw jut outward.

Does Anyone Know The Cause Of A Tree Growing In A Spiral Like This? I've Never Seen Anything Like It. Found In The Woods Of Georgia
That's a strangler vine,of some sort. Maybe wild grape, or bittersweet. It wraped itself around the tree and eventually destroyed it . The tree is long gone, but it's killer remains.
When I was a kid, in the dark ages, there was an old man in our neighborhood who would make canes and walking sticks out of these. He'd plant trees and wrap them with twine, after a few years , cut a few and polish them up. Beautiful pieces. He only made a few each year. Only an acre of property
We have similar, but not that extreme!!! Resembles a constrictor. Fascinating.
It could be because there were two very young trees next to each other, and someone decided to wrap one around the other, and tie it at the top. I’m not really sure though
this looks quite extreme as an example, but ivy often does this to younger trees or smaller branches. as the tree outgrows the ivy, you get a spiral bulge around it. I've got a staff and a wand with the same sort of effect, but not as dramatically as this.

Spotted this fine specimen from the road. Had to have gotten 20 lbs of chicken without making a dent in it! Found in New Jersey.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laetiporus Laetiporus is a genus of edible mushrooms found throughout much of the world. Some species, especially Laetiporus sulphureus, are commonly known as Sulphur shelf, chicken of the woods, the chicken mushroom, or the chicken fungus because it is often described as tasting like and having a texture similar to that of chicken meat. Description Laetiporus sp. from Anamalai Hills, Southern Western Ghats, India Individual "shelves" range from 5 to 25 centimetres (2 to 10 inches) across. These shelves are made up of many tiny tubular filaments (hyphae). The mushroom grows in large brackets; some have been found that weigh over 45 kilograms (100 pounds). Young fruiting bodies are characterized by a moist, rubbery, Sulphur-yellow to orange body sometimes with bright orange tips. Older brackets become pale and brittle almost chalk-like, mildly pungent, and are often dotted with beetle or slug/woodlouse holes.
Well, if there’s chicken in the ocean, why not in the woods.
Load More Replies...Chicken of the Wood. I’ve never had it personally but it’s apparently very good, with a meaty texture and a flavor similar to… wait for it… fried chicken.
Very desirable fungus, (edible, delicious and has no toxic lookalikes) also nearly impossible to cultivate.
If they got 20lbs, they damn near, if not completely, cleared the tree, that's sad (those are not heavy, at all, 20lbs is quite a bit). If you're going to go foraging, you really shouldn't clear out sources like this. Not only would it benefit other foragers who come behind you, but also the local wildlife and even the shroomies themselves because you drastically reduce their capability to reproduce. Please don't be a greedy ninny, but especially so when dealing with things that aren't quite as common, it's just rude, not impressive in the least.
They said they barely made a dent in it, so as long as they aren't lying, this would imply there was still a good amount left. Also, they may just be bad at guessing how much things weigh or were going off of sight as they said "had to" so they probably didn't actually weigh it at the time of posting. I do agree with your points if they did take it all tho

“Invasive alien species are increasingly a problem for European forests.” This is according to an article by the European Environment Agency on the eight facts about Europe’s forest ecosystems. But they weren’t referring to extraterrestrials.
“There are around 1,800 species in Europe’s forests which are invasive and alien to the natural environment. For example, European forests have been devastated by Dutch elm disease caused by fungi introduced from Asia, and gray squirrels are outcompeting red squirrels. Globally, invasive alien species are one of the largest causes of biodiversity loss.”

A Few Years Back Me And My Friends Found This Peeking Behind A Tree In The Woods Deep Behind A Friend’s House
I was camping with some friends in the woods behind another friend’s house. Halfway through the night, I decided to get some more firewood for the campfire. On my way back, I felt like I was being watched. It was a half-moon, so there was enough light for me to barely see around me. As I looked around, my eyes fell on a person’s face poking from behind a tree.
The face was horrifying, pale with hollow eyes and a gaping mouth. I dropped everything and ran, and when I came back to my group, I was panicked and scared. After telling them what happened, my friends decided they wanted to see it for themselves, and brought me with them. I was hesitant, but going with a group seemed better than being alone. We brought flashlights this time, and when we came to the place I saw the face, it was still there. After shining the light on it, we saw it was just a styrofoam head on a stick someone out behind the tree. It looked like it had been there for a while, with some green moss growing on it, discoloration, etc.
The scariest part about this was my friend (whose house was in front of the woods we were in) swore up and down he didn’t put it there. He was pretty shaken. Especially because he and his mom had been stalked a few months before and he was sure it was left by the guy.
I would’ve run straight past my camping friends and called them when I arrived home.

So today we went back to the site where we found the stones, contacted the local park ranger, and met him there. He brought a shovel, cause he was intrigued by the stones and wanted to see if he could find more, told us to step back because you really shouldn’t dig in a forest, since there could be some old World War munition and if he blew himself up that would be okay, but if it hit us he‘d have papers to fill out. Good old German humor. He found some big concrete stones and then he found a headstone! So, yes, it was a gravestone! Just someone who illegally dumped the headstone of „Hulda and Friedrich Teitge“ who died in 1957 and 1925 in the forest 30ish years ago, after the rent for their grave was up. We were told the stones would be picked up and a short research would be made to find out where they have been buried and if they can find relatives, but that’s it because they‘ve been here a while. He said there was no graveyard, if they had been illegally buried, the boars would have dug them out a long time ago. That’s all. Mystery solved.
Yes Grave rent, you rent for a certain amount of years, after that the graves are being emptied (eveicted if you will) and the remains are usually cremated or moved to a mass grave. Unless ofcourse you extend your contract or bought out the expiration.

Can Anyone Explain This That I Saw In The Forest Today?
It's a bypass. Due to the destroyed bark the tree doesn't get nutrition up to the crown, but you can bypass it with young branches, the more, the better. The will grow into the upper an lower bark and nutrition can be transported again. The tree was saved with this installation and now those former young and bendy branches get thicker and thicker and it looks like that in the end. You're welcome :)
Thank you. I was thinking it was similar to some sort of air grafting, or an experiment.
Load More Replies...If a tree losses it's bark all the way around it will die. To get the tree to survive it is possible to graft branches as 'bridges' over the bark free area.

That’s what I thought too! When my siblings and I were younger we lived in a house on a large plot of land and used to make similar dens outside with trees that grew in that cluster fashion like in the photo. Large rocks or wood stumps were our stools. It was so peaceful to sit inside our little den and talk or read. Sometimes even adults would join us for the serenity (although it was a bit of a tight fit with them).

What Is This 25-Foot-Tall Concrete Structure In The Woods?
I found this structure in the woods behind the Apalachia Powerhouse in Reliance, TN. It’s at least 25 feet tall, has three holes in the ceiling, and is nowhere near water or a main road. No other structures are nearby.
I can actually answer this, there was one at a summer camp I went to! It’s a pavilion, there would’ve been some tables or a fire pit, and it would’ve been near a trail, so people could stop and have lunch. As the trails change people stop using them and eventually forget about them, and they fall into disrepair.
Nope. This was part of an old cement plant. Specifically, this was part of the stone loading which dumped into small narrow gauge railcars which distributed the stone to various kilns around the plant which was used to create lime for the concrete plant. I was in the original reddit thread this came from and provided the history and photographs documenting the old concrete plant.

A Week Ago, I Was Walking In The Woods Again And I Saw This
So about a month ago, I discovered this path in the woods by my school. I really didn’t think anything of it, it just led to a cool pond area and a walking trail. But if you go into the woods a bit deeper, you find a bunch of chairs all sat around the remnants of a fire.
Some of the chairs were hanging upside down from trees, and it was just a really eerie thing to see but I didn’t think much of it, probably that it was just an abandoned site of some college party from a few years back or something.
Sadly, I was/am too much of a chicken to investigate further so I did what the sign said and left, but I’ve thought about it every day since. Any ideas as to what it might be?

Found In The Forest. Did I Stumble Across Someone's Place Of Practice?
Sorry if I say anything insensitive or uneducated. I was raised Mormon and only recently started educating myself on other practices and beliefs.
I found two "huts" in the forest. The first three pictures are from the one I found today. The last three were found a few months ago. Both were made by tying thin branches together. Both contained logs painted blue and purple. Both had what I would describe as charms hanging from the branches. Both had a pot left in them. The fifth picture has a symbol that may mean something. Is this pagan? Is it disrespectful for me to go inside them?
Honestly to be safe I would not touch or go in them. The items/structures appear to be still in use. All Holy places and items of any faith should be treated with reverence. Interesting photos.
Kudos to this person trying to understand and respect other faiths, practices, and beliefs.
As a pagan I would be real nervous to build my ritual space somewhere strangers have access to it.
As a pagan with Mormon relatives, yes, it is disrespectful. These are places crafted for someone's worship, with elements bound and a place to burn offerings. Respect your neighbors.
