In some ways, the forest is like the ocean, a vast expanse where you can get lost while traversing. At some point, you will stumble upon something interesting (to say the least), like the images in these photos.

Some of these odd discoveries are byproducts of natural occurrences. Others, however, may make you wonder about the fascinating backstory of how these objects landed in this neck of the woods (in the most literal sense).

This series of photos continues the ones Bored Panda collected previously. Scroll away to see which ones intrigue you the most.

How much do we know about our forests? As it turns out, even scientists aren't sure. Most have mere estimates of how much life exists in those tree canopies around the globe.

According to the World Wildlife Fund, here's an approximate: "We don't know how many tree species there are on Earth, but scientists estimate there are about 63,000 known species. There could be as many as 9,000 tree species still unknown to science."

These forest finds are just some of the many usually unearthed by hikers or experts. In 2023, a group of archeologists found the remains of a Yotvingian settlement. The Yotvingians were an ancient Baltic tribe that existed until the 1400s.

According to a report by the Miami Herald, archeologists from the University of Warsaw found traces of Yotvingian inhabitants through the style of bronze jewelry they found in a Polish forest. They eventually discovered jewelry dating back to the 10th and 12th centuries.

Black Cat On A Leather Chair In The Woods

Black Cat On A Leather Chair In The Woods

One time I was on a random back road. There was a little paved path going up to a leather armchair in the middle of a pretty thick little woods. On the arm of the chair was a black cat, bathing in the sun's rays. It felt unreal, like straight out of a book. I didn’t dare get any closer, as I figured that a witch must live nearby.

They can only guess. Soil/slope creep, wind or water flattening them at a young age, sustained high winds throughout most of their lives, etc. All of those cause this to happen. This being Wales in a bog doesn't even narrow it down.

This is an example of a "crooked forest" - lots of examples online and almost no explanations that can fit to all of them. Soil movement, farmers bending them for wheels when the trees were saplings; snowfall on saplings; even gravitational pulls! Quite fascinating.

We have this giant boxwood in our yard, that grew in such a way as to make a little green cave that me and my son would crawl into. One day, I placed a tiny table and chairs inside there, and each day he'd check the green cave to see if the "pixies" had left anything behind, or used their little table and chairs.

The stream washed away the soil that the tree was growing in, uncovering the roots. The roots grow bark on them to protect themselves from the sunlight, which kills bare roots. knew my love of bonsai trees would come in handy someday!

If you think seeing these images randomly on a hike or random walk through the woods is already jolting enough, try spending a night in a creepy forest. That was what writer Sophie Buchan did in Transylvania’s Hoia-Baciu Forest. And she described her experience in an article in The Independent

The Hoia-Baciu has a deep history, beginning with a UFO sighting in 1968. From then on, it became a tourist attraction. However, according to Buchan’s article, these visitors suddenly experienced strange occurrences.

It's sad, but in a way kind of sweet because it's clear how much all these pets were loved. And Cinder Lee lived to be an old doggie!

According to Buchan, some of the “strange symptoms” that people supposedly go through include “nausea, anxiety, the feeling of being watched – and the failure of electronic devices.” Joggers also reportedly witness ongoing ectoplasms.

Buchan also shared a story from her guide, Alex, who, along with his colleague Marius, experienced something out of this world. “Well, there was a man who went crazy, thinking he’d met a demon. He’d just got a massive tattoo of a demon on his chest, to ward off demons.”

The so-called “Venus of Willendorf” is a neolithic figurine, dating from about 2300 BCE. She’s been variously interpreted as goddess, children’s doll, pornography, decoration, and probably just about everything else one can imagine.

If you're ever in Santa Cruz, CA, take the spring trail through pogonip. There's a connecting trail that takes hikers to an area with a huge rock garden. Walking into it feels somewhat holy, as I imagine church feels to some others. People have been leaving their prayers written on small pieces of paper tucked into the rocks there for years. Just down the trail from there is a koi pond. In the middle of the woods. People sometimes leave Buddha statues or cans of fish food. This is one of my favorite hikes!

In November of 1983, a combination of poor weather and alcohol led to the crash of a small Cessna 414A plane, killing all on board. The wreckage of a deadly 1983 plane crash that has drawn visitors to the area for years was removed via helicopter June 27 by the National Park Service from its resting place near the Blue Ridge Parkway. Unauthorized “social trail” access to the site by visitors has created increasing safety and environmental concerns as the sight has become covered in graffiti and many hikers to the site have become lost and injured.

Buchan likewise wrote about what Alex described as “the scariest thing that happened.” It involved Marius during a night tour and an unusual conversation with a tourist.

“He once did an extended night tour, one-on-one, with a very morbid man who talked about his obsession with death, how he enjoyed being with people as they die, watching them die.”

You need to know the medium they grow on. Giant puffballs such as in the photo are grassland (sometimes they forget where they are supposed to grow and you might find them occasionally in the woods). Your best bed is fields outside of the city, not parks. In parks you'll find smaller species and the the woods you'll usually find common puffballs, stump balls, etc (careful with the eartballs) it does also depend on where you live as species vary from country to country.

According to Buchan, Alex isn’t a fan of sleeping in the forests because of his fair share of chilling experiences. During his very first camping trip, he abruptly woke up to the sound of “a very loud hoof noise,” which he thought came either from a horse or a “particularly large deer.”

“Every time they would stick their head out from the tent to investigate, the noise would stop,” she wrote, recalling Alex’s experiences. “The next time, he slept in a hammock to get closer to whatever was causing the sound. His visit was cut short when a bat smashed into his face.”

First Gold Find For The Year And The Weirdest Find Of All Time

First Gold Find For The Year And The Weirdest Find Of All Time

I was in the woods detecting in an area with heavy iron today (1800s nails in the ground, scrap iron bits, and sheet metal bits), and to my amazement, found dentures made of gold. Not sure how old they are, but my guess is somewhere in the 1800s up to the 1940s, since the homes which were once nearby were gone by the mid-1940s.

If they're that old, this is how they were made. I'm sure animal teeth were used and filed down. I know WAY back in the day, George Washingtons dentures were all metal with a spring on both jaw sides and the teeth were a mix of horse, cow and human. They're in a museum and there's pics online. They look so painfully dreadful - but it helped George eat. He couldn't speak well at all with them in and the pain made him unable to close his mouth well - plus being so awkward and big, it made his lower jaw jut outward.

When I was a kid, in the dark ages, there was an old man in our neighborhood who would make canes and walking sticks out of these. He'd plant trees and wrap them with twine, after a few years , cut a few and polish them up. Beautiful pieces. He only made a few each year. Only an acre of property

It could be because there were two very young trees next to each other, and someone decided to wrap one around the other, and tie it at the top. I’m not really sure though

this looks quite extreme as an example, but ivy often does this to younger trees or smaller branches. as the tree outgrows the ivy, you get a spiral bulge around it. I've got a staff and a wand with the same sort of effect, but not as dramatically as this.

The author wrote about her experience during her overnight stay at the Hoia-Baciu forest. While she didn’t have the same creepy encounters, she took more notice of the trees around.

“We point our flashlights at misshapen trees – many here grow in zig-zag patterns or in spirals, a phenomenon which has not been plausibly explained by any of the scientists who have come to investigate. What’s more, every single tree that spirals does so in a clockwise direction.”

OP said this on reddit - 'seems to be a mold of some kind, and filled with concrete. The pin pointer identifies it as metal, but if it is concrete, it could have some type of rebar in it that is setting it off. The whole thing has me puzzled. I don't know exactly what it is, what the significance (if any) of the keys with it are, or why it was buried in the woods (but close enough that I could still see the house, so not really in the middle of no where'

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laetiporus Laetiporus is a genus of edible mushrooms found throughout much of the world. Some species, especially Laetiporus sulphureus, are commonly known as Sulphur shelf, chicken of the woods, the chicken mushroom, or the chicken fungus because it is often described as tasting like and having a texture similar to that of chicken meat. Description Laetiporus sp. from Anamalai Hills, Southern Western Ghats, India Individual "shelves" range from 5 to 25 centimetres (2 to 10 inches) across. These shelves are made up of many tiny tubular filaments (hyphae). The mushroom grows in large brackets; some have been found that weigh over 45 kilograms (100 pounds). Young fruiting bodies are characterized by a moist, rubbery, Sulphur-yellow to orange body sometimes with bright orange tips. Older brackets become pale and brittle almost chalk-like, mildly pungent, and are often dotted with beetle or slug/woodlouse holes.

If they got 20lbs, they damn near, if not completely, cleared the tree, that's sad (those are not heavy, at all, 20lbs is quite a bit). If you're going to go foraging, you really shouldn't clear out sources like this. Not only would it benefit other foragers who come behind you, but also the local wildlife and even the shroomies themselves because you drastically reduce their capability to reproduce. Please don't be a greedy ninny, but especially so when dealing with things that aren't quite as common, it's just rude, not impressive in the least.

They said they barely made a dent in it, so as long as they aren't lying, this would imply there was still a good amount left. Also, they may just be bad at guessing how much things weigh or were going off of sight as they said "had to" so they probably didn't actually weigh it at the time of posting. I do agree with your points if they did take it all tho

I am in for the special fungus finds!

“Invasive alien species are increasingly a problem for European forests.” This is according to an article by the European Environment Agency on the eight facts about Europe’s forest ecosystems. But they weren’t referring to extraterrestrials.

“There are around 1,800 species in Europe’s forests which are invasive and alien to the natural environment. For example, European forests have been devastated by Dutch elm disease caused by fungi introduced from Asia, and gray squirrels are outcompeting red squirrels. Globally, invasive alien species are one of the largest causes of biodiversity loss.”

A Few Years Back Me And My Friends Found This Peeking Behind A Tree In The Woods Deep Behind A Friend’s House

A Few Years Back Me And My Friends Found This Peeking Behind A Tree In The Woods Deep Behind A Friend’s House

I was camping with some friends in the woods behind another friend’s house. Halfway through the night, I decided to get some more firewood for the campfire. On my way back, I felt like I was being watched. It was a half-moon, so there was enough light for me to barely see around me. As I looked around, my eyes fell on a person’s face poking from behind a tree.

The face was horrifying, pale with hollow eyes and a gaping mouth. I dropped everything and ran, and when I came back to my group, I was panicked and scared. After telling them what happened, my friends decided they wanted to see it for themselves, and brought me with them. I was hesitant, but going with a group seemed better than being alone. We brought flashlights this time, and when we came to the place I saw the face, it was still there. After shining the light on it, we saw it was just a styrofoam head on a stick someone out behind the tree. It looked like it had been there for a while, with some green moss growing on it, discoloration, etc.

The scariest part about this was my friend (whose house was in front of the woods we were in) swore up and down he didn’t put it there. He was pretty shaken. Especially because he and his mom had been stalked a few months before and he was sure it was left by the guy.

And if you want to see something you probably haven’t before, Moroccan tree goats are worth looking into. Yes, you read that right. Goats are standing in trees as if it were a daily forest sighting worldwide.

These “flying goats” have been a tourist attraction since the early 2000s. But while they have become a source of livelihood for locals, some believe they are being exploited and deprived of freedom.

There is a bathtub in the stream near our house, too. They would put these there to force the water to wind around, slowing it down so it doesn't create a deep crater and the water doesn't rush too fast in a rainstorm.

I’ve been to Ireland and saw some palm trees in people’s yards. I was told they fare well in wet climates and are fairly tolerant of temperature changes.

My Husband And I Went For A Walk In A Forest In Germany And Found Some Weird Stones

My Husband And I Went For A Walk In A Forest In Germany And Found Some Weird Stones

So today we went back to the site where we found the stones, contacted the local park ranger, and met him there. He brought a shovel, cause he was intrigued by the stones and wanted to see if he could find more, told us to step back because you really shouldn’t dig in a forest, since there could be some old World War munition and if he blew himself up that would be okay, but if it hit us he‘d have papers to fill out. Good old German humor. He found some big concrete stones and then he found a headstone! So, yes, it was a gravestone! Just someone who illegally dumped the headstone of „Hulda and Friedrich Teitge“ who died in 1957 and 1925 in the forest 30ish years ago, after the rent for their grave was up. We were told the stones would be picked up and a short research would be made to find out where they have been buried and if they can find relatives, but that’s it because they‘ve been here a while. He said there was no graveyard, if they had been illegally buried, the boars would have dug them out a long time ago. That’s all. Mystery solved.

Yes Grave rent, you rent for a certain amount of years, after that the graves are being emptied (eveicted if you will) and the remains are usually cremated or moved to a mass grave. Unless ofcourse you extend your contract or bought out the expiration.

It's a bypass. Due to the destroyed bark the tree doesn't get nutrition up to the crown, but you can bypass it with young branches, the more, the better. The will grow into the upper an lower bark and nutrition can be transported again. The tree was saved with this installation and now those former young and bendy branches get thicker and thicker and it looks like that in the end. You're welcome :)

If a tree losses it's bark all the way around it will die. To get the tree to survive it is possible to graft branches as 'bridges' over the bark free area.

That’s what I thought too! When my siblings and I were younger we lived in a house on a large plot of land and used to make similar dens outside with trees that grew in that cluster fashion like in the photo. Large rocks or wood stumps were our stools. It was so peaceful to sit inside our little den and talk or read. Sometimes even adults would join us for the serenity (although it was a bit of a tight fit with them).

Ok, so this is a totally wild guess, but some places are being hit with a really nasty prion disease that affects deer, and it’s extra scary because it lasts ages after the deer is dead. So, you might try to keep the dead deer in the same general area to try to prevent spread.

It reminds me of the Little House on the prairie books. Laura Ingalls-Wilder talked about them coming in to where they were going to live. Pa built a temporary house in the side of a hill and that's where they lived until he built their house. So may be someone lived there at one time.

What Is This 25-Foot-Tall Concrete Structure In The Woods?

I found this structure in the woods behind the Apalachia Powerhouse in Reliance, TN. It’s at least 25 feet tall, has three holes in the ceiling, and is nowhere near water or a main road. No other structures are nearby.

I can actually answer this, there was one at a summer camp I went to! It’s a pavilion, there would’ve been some tables or a fire pit, and it would’ve been near a trail, so people could stop and have lunch. As the trails change people stop using them and eventually forget about them, and they fall into disrepair.

Nope. This was part of an old cement plant. Specifically, this was part of the stone loading which dumped into small narrow gauge railcars which distributed the stone to various kilns around the plant which was used to create lime for the concrete plant. I was in the original reddit thread this came from and provided the history and photographs documenting the old concrete plant.

A Week Ago, I Was Walking In The Woods Again And I Saw This

So about a month ago, I discovered this path in the woods by my school. I really didn’t think anything of it, it just led to a cool pond area and a walking trail. But if you go into the woods a bit deeper, you find a bunch of chairs all sat around the remnants of a fire.

Some of the chairs were hanging upside down from trees, and it was just a really eerie thing to see but I didn’t think much of it, probably that it was just an abandoned site of some college party from a few years back or something.

Sadly, I was/am too much of a chicken to investigate further so I did what the sign said and left, but I’ve thought about it every day since. Any ideas as to what it might be?

Sorry if I say anything insensitive or uneducated. I was raised Mormon and only recently started educating myself on other practices and beliefs.

I found two "huts" in the forest. The first three pictures are from the one I found today. The last three were found a few months ago. Both were made by tying thin branches together. Both contained logs painted blue and purple. Both had what I would describe as charms hanging from the branches. Both had a pot left in them. The fifth picture has a symbol that may mean something. Is this pagan? Is it disrespectful for me to go inside them?

Honestly to be safe I would not touch or go in them. The items/structures appear to be still in use. All Holy places and items of any faith should be treated with reverence. Interesting photos.

As a pagan I would be real nervous to build my ritual space somewhere strangers have access to it.

As a pagan with Mormon relatives, yes, it is disrespectful. These are places crafted for someone's worship, with elements bound and a place to burn offerings. Respect your neighbors.

These are Torma. They are sculptures made mostly of flour and butter used in tantric rituals or as offerings in Tibetan Buddhism

They could also be air-dry clay and just be someone's art project

Why would they cover with a tarpaulin if they were just dumping it?

Looked like cast iron. Some were missing parts. On the other side of the forest, there is a sports field.

It’s suspiciously written in English instead of Japanese. So i guess it’s a tourist prank?

It is called the Suicide Forest as a lot of people go there to take their lives. So while this may be graffiti, it has a real message to it.

For context, Aokigahara is known as the Suicide Forest because many Japanese people decide to die there.

Considering the location is the suicide forest, it looks like a question being asked to the living people who walk through said forest.

Since the leaves are off I went down a path that’s normally blocked looking for a new campsite. I'm pretty sure it will not be here.

Most likely this it is what it is. This is one of the larger boxes in which there is a log to sign to show you found it and trinkets that are left by other explorers. you can take a trinket or trade for one that you brought.
