Humans have a great curiosity about animals. We keep pets, watch nature documentaries and you can find a zoo in most populated areas. Sometimes, it seems, wildlife has the same curiosity. Or at the very least they just want our food.
So as you are going about your day, keep an eye out. There might be some local fauna just hanging about! But it’s important to remember safety precautions when coming face to face with wild animals. We’ve put together some tips to keep you safe.
Bored Panda has gathered some human - animal encounters that probably left both parties confused. Upvote your favorites, comment your wildlife experiences and enjoy this list.

Baby Foxes Showed Up To Say Hi At My Grandmother's House
Many years ago, after a big snowfall (I was not living in a place where this is an usual sighting) I came outside in the early morning and saw a beautiful red fox standing still among my lavender plants. We stared at each other. After few seconds of enchantment the fox ran to the borders of my property, staring at me one last time (I was still blocked). I'll never forget that stare. She's still in my heart.
I wish to make an afterword. At the time I was not very conscious about best behaviour with wildlife buddies and after that vision I took some fresh meat at the borders between my garden and agricultural fields,. I was only aware of the hunters bullets stuck in my outside walls. The fox never returned to eat it and I wish he/she had a long life even if "season legal hunters" ,were always around.
Load More Replies...My last flat had a small garden which a vixen used to raise her cubs several years in a row - watching the floofballs play was a highlight of every spring. They got so used to me they would sometimes wander into my flat to see what was happening, which was fine with me but my cat really didn't approve of!
It’s things like this that make me wish foxes were domesticated pets like dogs or cats
Foxes can be bought as domesticated pets in 15 states in the US. They cost around 500-6000 dollars depending on the type!

Living Alone In Nashville, I Used To Wake Up Every Morning To This Gal (She's Wild) Squawking For Food At My Back Slider
One morning I serenaded her with my guitar. The next week she made a nest and laid eggs on my patio... I named her Greta.
Waddles I think one of your cousins is in a photo above this one.
Load More Replies...A few years ago I raised two wild Canadian Geese from tiny yellow fluff balls to adults. When they were little I'd sing the lullaby song to them just because the vibration of my voice seemed to be calming to them. When they got older and were running around the yard if I sat in the grass and sang that song they would run over into my lap and settle down for a nap. Eventually got them to join a flock of wild geese and go live their goosey lives.
yup so maybe it was 'feral' but if in US that is not a wild goose. Toulouse breed, I believe.
Load More Replies...That's what I named one half of the goose couple that hangs around the pond my office is next to. I named her mate Gary.
Security Light Went Off At 1 Am. This Little Guy Found My Dog's Ball
He/She was actually 1 of 3, that were playing with each other in the backyard. I stayed up watching for almost an hour.
'RoanTheMad', that's the understatement of the year!
Load More Replies...The cuteness!! If I ever live in a place with urban foxes, I am ABSOLUTELY leaving dog toys out for them! (I live in a place with urban coyotes... I don't think they'd play with toys XD )
Bless their little floofy hearts, I hope they had fun waiting for mom to do her mommy business.
Last spring I had a family of 7 living in my garden ( mum, dad and 5 cubs).. I'd fed the mum throughout a particularly cold and snowy winter so I guess she felt safe enough to make a home and have her babies. I'd spend hours watching them play together, learn to walk run and climb. My sister donated some of her dogs old toys and they went mad for them, loved playing with then. I've got ao many pics and videos. Unfortunately they did destroy my garden a bit. The mum still comes and visits a few times a week for some food
Animals are actually quite practical. Suburban areas often provide an abundant food source for animals, including garbage, pet food, and bird feeders. This can attract raccoons, skunks, squirrels, and other animals that are looking for an easy meal. Sometimes wildlife has to deal with steadily declining habitats. As human populations grow and development increases, wildlife habitats are being destroyed and fragmented, forcing animals to move into suburban areas in search of food and shelter.
Urbanization and suburban sprawl can also disrupt migration patterns and create barriers that prevent animals from reaching their traditional habitats. This can force animals to adjust their ranges and seek new habitats, which often includes suburban areas. It's important to remember that while wildlife encounters in suburban areas can be exciting, they can also pose a danger to both humans and animals.
Saw This Beauty Yesterday
Never post the location online when you see a white deer. Unfortunately they are a magnet for trophy hunters who would rather look at the head of one stuck on a wall.
Sad but true, likely it stems from both the legend of the white stag being an animal that "cannot be caught" but also represents knowledge/fortune and is sacred. And also because they're just so incredibly rare. Humans suck. :/
Load More Replies...That's a caribou, not a deer, not a moose, not a reindeer. And for those that thing caribou and reindeer are the same (I did for most of my life even having grown up in Alaska lol) they're actually different species. Reindeer are smaller with smaller antlers and no big bit at the forehead.
"Reindeer and caribou are the same animal (Rangifer tarandus) and are a member of the deer family. In Europe, they are called reindeer. In North America, the animals are called caribou if they are wild and reindeer if they are domesticated.Feb 2, 2023" National Park Service

The Possum That Visits Our Deck Every Evening Brought Along Somebody Special Last Night! Meet Deckster And Backster
I'm ashamed to say it took me awhile to sort out opossum and possum.. being two completely different animals from two very different countries.. these are way cuter than the monstrous creature we have in the USA
Trickysaurus! There are Brushtail Possums around here; when I hear a massive THUMP on my roof I know one just came visiting. Our dog (may he rest in peace) would go into hysterics at night sometimes and it would take us a while to figure out why until we saw the distant furry shape perched up on the powerlines. We even had one who often visited with her baby on board!
Those possum's are much prettier than the ones that hang around my house!
It's important for humans to remember that wildlife encounters can be dangerous and unpredictable, so it's crucial to take precautions to stay safe. When encountering large animals like bears, moose, or elk, it's recommended to give them a wide berth and avoid getting too close. These animals can be territorial and may feel threatened if approached too closely. Keep a safe distance, speak calmly and avoid making sudden movements to avoid inciting an aggressive response. If you are worried about a specific area, consult your local wildlife authority to find out when would be the safest time to hike or camp.
Just A Friendly Local I Met On A Hike Yesterday (Portugal)

Found This Guy Under My Car This Morning. Spent About 10 Minutes Hand-Feeding Him Carrots And Broccoli
OP stated they were able to catch the bunny and took it to the local no-kill shelter! Hopefully it got reunited with its family (if it was an escapee) or got a new family :)
Load More Replies...There were a couple wild bunnies in my neighborhood that I would feed. They really liked cherries. The one day I tossed one a couple cherries as he sat on a pile of snow. He started snarfing them down then jerked upright and froze, staring at me. He had cherry juice smeared all around his mouth, and eviscerated cherry bits and juice on the snow around him. It was... ZOMBUNNY!
There's a wild bunny that visits daily to eat my bird food and his absolute favourite snack is broccoli! Even more so than carrots or anything else. He'll eat it out of my hand like this bunny does. It's often the highlight of my day
I really think that the whole rabbits & carrots thing is a cartoon trope. My brother and my sister both have had rabbits and they would have torn down walls to get at cabbage, while walking right by carrots. Make of that what you will.
Load More Replies..."under my car this morning" suggests that he was parked in front of his house and got vegetables after finding that adorable rabbit.
Load More Replies...We had a rabbit named Wiblet who was an escape artist extraordinaire. Cutest little bugger, but we could just not keep him caged. Run free, Wibbs!
Fox Sleeping On Skylight
Do you mean the fox? Because if so you might want to clarify that so you don't get major downvotes
Load More Replies...Smaller creatures can also be dangerous in the right circumstances. If you come across a venomous snake, it's important to stay calm and avoid sudden movements. Keep a safe distance and don't try to touch or approach the snake. Snakes will generally only attack if they feel threatened, so it's important to give them space. In general, when hiking or camping, it's important to store food securely to avoid attracting wildlife like bears, raccoons, or other animals. Keep a clean camp, store food in airtight containers, and hang it from a tree at least 10 feet off the ground to keep it away from animals.
This Wild Goose Flew In And Became Friends With My Grandma's Farm Goose. He Hasn't Left In Over A Year
Not to be too a**l, but baby geese are called goslings.
Load More Replies...My aunt raised birds of all kinds. She had two goose couples. One of the ganders died, and the goose changed her affection to Bear the dog. Bear was an outside dog, but very sweet. Unfortunately, his goosely bride was not. She was quite jealous. After she moved herself into Bear's doghouse, no one was allowed to love on Bear, but her. He was HER man, thank you. I always felt sorry for Bear. He loved hanging out with his people, until he got married to the wicked goose of the west.
I just can't help but feel like the Canadian goose lost it's mate, then it's flock waiting. But, it found a new bond with this goose.

Rodents they really like rodents your building might have a rodent problem please feed me rodents.
If you encounter a wild animal in close proximity, such as a fox, coyote, or mountain lion, it's vital to stand tall, wave your arms, and make loud noises to scare it away. Never run from a wild animal, as this can trigger their predatory instincts and put you in danger. In the case of marine wildlife encounters, such as with dolphins, whales, or seals, it's important to observe from a safe distance and avoid disturbing their natural behavior. Do not approach them too closely, as this can disrupt their environment and pose a threat to both the animal and yourself.
I Went To The Amazon And Found My Long-Lost Brother
Never give money to “pose” with a wild animal, because 99.9% of the time, that animal is being treated unkindly, has been taken from the wild, and is under constant stress 7 days a week! When it dies if that stress or gets too big or too “fed up” it is destroyed and a new one takes it place! Please please boycott any “ photo for money” ops.

Found This Little Guy At Work Today
Wasn’t safe where I found him, so I let him go outside of the job.
OMG, that cutie would totally go home with me. Or, someone would have to talk some sense into me.
I can't believe it's really crawling on him. Ermine are are some of the most precious looking little animals but can be quite vicious. This little one is adorable, I'm so glad that it let him relocate it to a safer place.
Stoat/weasel/ermine. Name varies by location and a few other things.
Even suburban areas can often provide a sheltered environment that offers protection from predators. For example, deer and other large mammals may find refuge in residential areas, where they can avoid predators and find food, like your half-eaten, discarded pizza. Smaller creatures can enjoy human areas as well. Our gardens are a wonderful hideout and buffet for rabbits, if they can get away with it!

Koala Had Wandered Into A House And Decided It Wanted To Be The Fairy On The Christmas Tree
This evening our hotline operator took a call. At first, she thought she was the victim of a prank call.
But no, a koala desperate to get in the Christmas spirit had wandered into Amanda McCormick's house and decided it wanted to be the fairy on the Christmas tree. Amanda was not so sure and rang 1300KOALAZ for help.
Thanks, Amanda for the great pictures and for making sure this little koala got its wish, even if it was just for a short while.
Yep. I hate them. We had a wildlife shelter and would rescue injured and orphaned wildlife and the most aggressive animals we cared for were koalas.

Found An Owl Lying In My Backyard This Morning (Don’t Worry I Took Him To A Wildlife Rescue Center)
I took her to the Austin Wildlife Rescue center and the vet working there told me she probably hit her head really hard and has a concussion. She will make a full recovery and will be released as soon as she regains full consciousness.
Barn owl. SO pretty. One of my favorite birds.
Load More Replies...Barn owl. Very common in eastern North America. Unlike most owls, they're active in the daytime.
She is MAJESTIC, but imagine if she woke up In your car on the way to the wildlife rescue 😳
Poor baby. I found one once at house I was housesitting that didn't make it and called our local wildlife center to come investigate. Apparently if they eat a mouse that has eaten poison, it can kill the owl too.
Momma Deer That Lives On Our Property Came And Showed Us Her Baby
We had a deer in my area that had twins last year. It's been cool to watch them grow up. Mom has been teaching them the fine art of tipping over our bird feeder so they can eat the bird seed. :)
Wild Boar Chilling With Humans
That's either very brave or very stupid of them. Wild boars are incredibly dangerous.
You know the knight in Monty python who says his arm getting cut off is `just a flesh wound?` His coat of arms has a boar on it, an animal known for ignoring fatal wounds
Load More Replies...I would not be staying that close! They are grumpy and built like tanks, many cars have been written off after crashing into one.
Looks like it's got used to people feeding it. We really shouldn't do this. It leads to a lot of bad encounters and then animals get shot "for public safety" or abused by *holes.
I’m surprised it hasn’t attacked them already. Wild boars are unpredictable and well armed.

He is a chonk although squirrels do fluff up a lot when it's cold, this big boi is all natural :)
There are hundreds of squirrels in my yard but I've literally never seen one so fat before! I wonder if some person has been feed him?
It looks like he's sitting right inside the feeding-area, so I'd say "yes"

I was attacked a few years ago by a protective mama bobcat. A monsoon storm knocked the power out on my farm while I was grocery shopping. I had to open the property gate manually. While walking towards the gate, I hear a fierce snarl and a second later, I’m attacked from the side. Mama and her three kittens were camouflaged in the bushes next to the gate. I didn’t see them and got too close for mama’s comfort. Miraculously, she didn’t bite me but did get in a few scratches that needed stitches. One of the many dangers of living in the desert.

Really hope you don't have a cat flap or dog door or something of the sort. Looks cute but that fox is thinking hmmm that's exactly the size of a snack I can handle. Happened so many times here in the uk and not just rural areas but in london. Fox came through cat flaps and dog doors and attacked babies.
A lot of these stories are misreported. It's extremely rare that a fox will attack - and even rarer to go out of its way to do so. They are normally very shy and try to keep away from humans. Can't blame them really.

Found A Baby Possum. Took It To A Wildlife Rehabilitator. She Sent Me This Picture After She Cleaned Him Up
As a former wild life rehabilitator, I can categorically state that your comment is way off base. Opossums are shy and harmless animals, lacking the ability to defend themselves from most threats. When unable to escape, their main defense, they will bear their teeth and hiss as a warning. Of course, if someone is dumb enough to continue harassing one, they could get bit, and rightfully so. Came Home From A Walk And Saw This Guy At Our Stairs. After Confirming It’s A Baby Bobcat The Police Called A Local Wildlife Center To Come Get Him
This was on Saturday.
Dustin, my husband, went on a walk and when he was coming home, he found a kitten. He called me and said that it said it had a possible medical problem. I immediately told him to pick it up and bring it in (I was going to evaluate for obvious medical concerns and bring it to the vet). He said that it was hissing and making it known he/she did not want to be handled.
So, I go down and bring some food with me and a towel. After getting there and trying to feed it, with it making it known I was not welcomed either, I notice some stuff that made me realize that I wasn’t dealing with no ordinary kitten... It is a Bobcat kitten!!!! It was just in the corner of the stairs.
Imagine if OPs husband had brought the kitten inside and they just casually brought it to a normal vet for pets
It wouldn't be the first time someone mistakenly brought a wild animal to a vet. My vet had plenty of misidentified stories of kind people bringing in what they thought were domestic strays.

Friend Found A Baby Raccoon In Their Garage, They're In Contact With The Local Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. Just A Cutie
My kids and one of their friends found one baby raccoon under our living room window outside. We lived beside a busy highway and there were no signs of mom. It was a little girl and she didn't have her eyes open yet. I called everywhere and no one could put me in touch with a rehab anywhere near us. So I took care of her for about two months. I worked 3rd shift and they bring her and feed her on my breaks. After about two months we had a lady start working with us who did rehab and had three skunks amongst several other animals and she knew a woman that had a wildlife refuge. So I let Ann take Khasha until she could get her big enough to release at the refuge. I would take the kids to visit her on our days off and she would climb all over me and groom me. I still miss and love her little heart but it was the best thing for her to be able to be free and safe. We also got to visit the skunks too, they were awesome chonky sweethearts. Continued below.
The three skunks and Khasha would all climb into her fruit and veggie drawer in the fridge when she'd open it to make their food. Ann would set up enrichment games for Khasha to make her hunt for some of her favorite foods and treats and it was brilliant. Also her having to have plenty of water to clean her little paws and food when she eats. It was amazing seeing her learn how to be a big girl. Raccoons will forever hold a chunk of my heart.

Found This Little Girl When I Was Cutting The Grass Today
Curious, is this a safe way to hold bunnies? It doesn't look very comfortable
Most mammals have loose skin/fur. (Most mammals live in a "bag" of their own skin/fur, more or less.) Mothers will often carry their babies by the scruff (like this) when moving them around. It's totally safe when the babies are young, but you shouldn't carry an adult animal by the scruff.
Load More Replies...I'm glad you found her in time! My neighbor accidentally mowed over a bunny once. The entire block was in mourning. :(
I did too once. Cried for hours. My kids had to console me. 😢
Load More Replies...It's not fair for you to be downvoted. But typically bunnies are ok with it; they're good mommas and dont abandon their babies. Many animals actually won't abandon their babies and just want them back. But you definitely shouldn't unnecessarily disturb a baby animal though and if you must then should wear gloves or a towel to protect the both you and baby
Load More Replies...I know that for domestic rabbits, it's important to put a hand beneath them when picking them up. Their back legs are so strong that they can injure their backs by kicking out when being held like this. I'm not sure if the same applies to such a young wild rabbit.

Cat scratch/bite warning: Even if you don't see a visible injury, bring the captured animal to your local vet/wildlife facility. Cat bites and scratches carry all sorts of life-threatening microbes that can kill a released animal slowly and painfully. Best to get an expert opinion and possibly antibiotics before releasing the animal.

There’s A Coyote Outside My Friend’s House
I lived on a wildlife trail that was heavily used by all sorts of animals from deer and bears to bobcats and cougars. The best nights were when the coyotes gathered at the pond, yipping, howling, and I swear laughing. Yards needed to be properly fenced to protect domestic animals from these wanderers.
There's loads of them where I live, you can hear them howling most nights. Unfortunately sometimes followed by gunshots if they start getting too interested in calves and lambs.
Yeah, they’re awful with livestock. They nearly completely wiped out our ducks once. I’d hunt them too.

We've been hearing them a lot the last couple of nights (I'm in the same area). My dog is annoyed that we are keeping such a close eye on him while he is outside (he likes to roam around the yard at his own pace).
Tucson was the only place I've ever seen a bobcat or jackrabbit in person. I was surprised how big they both are in real life! One of the coolest places I've been. I also got to do a sunset horseback ride in the desert/mountains. It was incredible!
I’m so glad we don’t have bobcats where I live. I’ve already named him Mr Snuggles, and decided he can sleep on the bed in winter!

This isn't true, though. There are seven main types of albinism and some types absolutely have pigment in the eyes. "It is a common misconception that all albino animals have characteristic pink or red eyes (resulting from the lack of pigment in the iris allowing the blood vessels of the retina to be visible), however this is not the case for some forms of albinism".

Deer Came To Visit
Looks more like reindeer to me? But I'm no expert. Deer or not, I have never seen a fur coat like the young one has
They are reindeer. But reindeer ARE deer. So calling them deer is accurate, if nonspecific. Additionally, these are likely domestic reindeer belonging to nomadic reindeer herders in the area, so it's possible that domestic reindeer have pelts and patterns that would never survive in a wild population.

I Still Can't Believe They Eat Together Every Morning
Up in New Jersey, they're called groundhogs. Super friendly. But you can't approach them or they run away. But we put nuts and seeds out every day and the squirrels and groundhog get along fine. Plenty of food for everyone. Even the birds show up eventually.
I once had a groundhog living under a house that I was renting. It did no damage and was a quiet neighbor, so I didn't have any reservations about the living arrangements. I thought that it was alone like me, but one day as I walked past the back room I saw what looked like a small stuffed animal standing there. Without thinking, I moved closer to pick it up.That's when I saw that it was a baby groundhog! I tried to wrangle him out through the back door but he streaked past me and down the basement stairs. It took me 4 hours to capture him and take him outside. We were both exhausted! I figured he got in through a crawl space under my bedroom, fell to the floor, then couldn't climb his way back out. So I blocked that area off from the rest of the basement and was groundhog-less in the house, but the two of them still lived with me, so I made sure that they had food and water. The little one liked to leave mom and come and visit me when I sat on my porch! He was adorable!

Met This Lizard Outside The City, Released It Safe And Sound
Wonderful, gorgeous, amazing. And sad. The foxes are beautiful, but here (Australia, ) they are an absolute curse. Amongst the most successful and devastating feral predators in the country, highly efficient at destroying native wildlife. Yet where they belong, such beautiful critters. Wouldn't it be lovely if humans didn't bvgger everything up all the time?
One night I heard a noise at my door. Told myself to ignore it cause I just be crazy. Heard the door again. Went to look and a raccoon was standing holding open the screen door like okay lady come on let me in my house! I'm so angry I didn't get a picture because it was the craziest thing I've ever seen.
I'm usually very independent. My husband was going to be traveling away from home for a few days, no big deal to me. Of course, the one time he is gone, about 10pm, there is banging and a racket at the front door, my heart is racing! I work up the courage to see who it is... A large raccoon climbing up the metal trellis trying to get on my roof! I banged hard on the door and yelled, which scared him down and back to his tree, took awhile to get to sleep after that though!

my storytime!!!!!! so, when i was 12-13, the camp i went to was a gifted kid (trademarked) camp, so you could choose the courses you took. i took herpetology (study of reptiles and amphibians), because it seemed cool-it really was, awesome class, great teacher! on the last day, our group (the counselors walked us to our courses in groups) was walking to the science building, and suddenly, "HOLY SH*T!!! GUYS, I FOUND A LIZARD!!!!" Lo and behold, a lizard did, in fact, spawn in that area. after around 5 minutes of freaking out and trying to trap it, guess who was the lucky yoinker? me! i held the lizard as we walked to the classroom, and i... dropped it after it wriggled free. but! i picked it up and it was ok (thank god). the teacher told us it was a baby Italian Wall Climber (which are invasive to my state), and promised us he would raise it as a pet. so, that's my animal in the wild story. also, the many cats i've seen on the walking trails in my town, but they were probably outdoor.
