What's worse is that United Healthcare shareholders are suing the company as they claim the company made misleading disclosures. Many years ago when I was a library clerk, a mum would leave her kid 9maybe 10 yrs old) in the library in summertime for many hours. The place would be closing and he would still be there looking so so sad. We eventually called Social Services on the mum. Library workers rule.

I'm currently reading "Lightning in a Mason Jar" and it deals with this very thing. The librarian is part of a safety network for ab*sed women. Good read so far.
Tumblr opened in 2007, founded by David Karp as a fusion of the classic blog and new short-form posting culture. What distinguished Tumblr early on was the ease and flexibility of use, nobody wrote about it just being for words or pictures, but rather a stream-of-consciousness dashboard where one could quickly post text, GIFs, quotes, songs, links, and "reblog" one another in a constantly mutating conversation.
Unlike most social sites, Tumblr encouraged anonymity, creativity, and untrammeled expression. You didn't have to use your real name, friend your real friends, or even add a profile photo. That freedom made it irresistibly appealing, especially to teenagers and young adults not represented anywhere else online.

The first time I saw that movie I was on an airplane flying to somewhere with my best friend on some sort of night flight. Everyone was sleeping except us. We were laughing so hard we pissed everybody off. It's still an awesome memory. We tried to laugh quietly but it was really really hard. Strangely, I don't remember where it was we were off to. I just remember laughing my a*s off at that movie!

My friend brought me to a family wedding at a resort in the DR because their vacation package included an extra ticket. I tried to stay quietly to the side when they were taking photos, but at one point during the group photos, the family insisted I be in them as well. I always wonder if they look back on those pictures years later like "who tf is that random white chick."

One of the things thst told me - or should have told me; I'm an idiot - was when I was with her at her family's over a weekend holiday. There were about 12-15 of them and they took a series of family photos, with different groupings. Spouses were there znd shuffled in and out of the photos, but I was the only boyfriend there. As the photos progressed, I was not invited to join for a single one. Tgat should have told ne then that while I was invested in the relationship, my partner was not. But, as said before and by many, I'm an idiot.

So my brother had two cats. One wasin his last days, barely eating. So we bought some expensive wet food for a last meal. We put it down and he just turned away. Then the other cat came over. The older cat turned back to the food, and proceeded to eat every bite while maintaining eye contact with the younger one. He passed a few days later.

I was on after school detention duty. My only customer was this tiny, little 10-year-old boy. And he was hungry, He said, his dad was a bit low on food. I ran into the staffroom and got him a big plate of biscuits and fruit. He asked if I'd get into trouble for it. I told him not to worry but eat. I'll deal with the consequences. No child should go hungry!

If it were up to me, they'd all get decent living wages and the respect they deserve. You've got a college graduate who passed boards, getting a license to teach your children. You, the parent, the education boards, and the legislature don't seem to care and won't fund them properly. Let's try an experiment. Take one school system, all of the schools in that system, pay the teachers well, and provide the tools they need to teach their lessons. Show those teachers support and respect, let them participate in setting up their school programs, and then leave them alone to do their job. This experiment should last for at least 2 years. By the end of year 1, we'll see developments, by year 2, those kids will perform above average, and be interested in school.
Meanwhile, Tumblr was strange. Splendidly strange. It was its own kind of humor, its own form of etiquette, its own language. You could scroll by a serious depression post and get to view a GIF of a raccoon pilfering cat food immediately afterward. There were entire pages of cursed images, surrealist memes, and photoshopped text posts with remarks that built up like an improv exercise gone off the rails. And all of it, down to your blog's color, your cursor icon, whether it autoplayed music, was customizable. No two blogs were ever the same.

This is just horrific. I recently took a long time off work (also in a school) because my husband was sick (stoke). We live in Europe though so neither of our employers gave the slightest problem, only sympathy. Not only has there been zero pressure to return, when I indicated I would like some reduced hours, they immediately gave me a great flexible plan. When I went in, I had a long meeting with HR - to outline the support they wanted to give me. Keep in mind, all treatment is covered by national insurance and our jobs and wages are secure. I can't imagine having gone through this worrying about money too. I can't understand what is going through the minds of American commentators that say this type of socialism is wrong.

After working for other people for years, my husband and I started our own business. He’s the talent, I run the office. We recently had an employee who injured his leg on his day off (not work-related), had to have surgery nd a month off to recover. Now, our business requires physical mobility, so he was not at work that entire month. He also didn’t have enough vacation or sick time to cover it. No matter. We paid him his full salary for the entire month anyway—-no one else in the company had to “donate” their own time off, because we value him and you only get one chance to heal properly, so we didn’t want him feeling like he had to come back too early and risk permanently injure himself. F*****g a*****e huge corporations can well afford to not only pay ALL their employees a decent wage to begin with, but also to cover them when they’re ill or injured and out for extended periods, WITHOUT any other employees feeling like they have to give up some of their own precious little amount of days off to help them out, ffs. Always pisses me off that the person with so little will gladly share it with you when you need it, but the person with everything, who wouldn’t miss the little you might need, will call you a deadbeat and have security run you off the property. Or worse.

Our faculty established a "sick bank" to cover situations like this. If you were a member (by contributing one sick day), you were covered if you ran out of sick days. After a while, I got maternity leave included in the coverage. (I was told "This will pass only if a man proposes it". So I did.)

Ownership changed again, first to Verizon (which owned Yahoo), then to Automattic, the parent company of WordPress, in 2019. On Automattic's watch, Tumblr stabilized somewhat and even regained some of its quirky personality. It added new features like "Communities" and tried to build a more positive moderation community, but the user base is small and muted compared to its earlier incarnation.

Doctors have to give estimate prognosis, to prepare you, but it is amazing when people push past them. I am sure it wasn't just this one big goal they reached, but a hundred smaller ones along the way that were equally important. It is also important to recognize the part their parents played too. They helped their sons by believing in them, and giving them a great quality of live, knowing it might be short.

There is a small subgroup of dog breeds known as livestock guardian dogs. I believe there is only a handful of true breeds in this category, but they are being used around the world to help endangered species. I know because I owned an Anatolian Shepherd quite by accident, And in doing research about them I discover They are commonly used to rescue and keep cheetahs safe as they protect hunters flocks and remove the need for livestock managers to poison them.

Despite all that, Tumblr still exists. In fact, one of the reasons it's been so enduringly popular is that it never did fit into the influencer-weighted, algorithmic design of other social media. You can't get as easily viral. There are no follower public counts or verification checkmarks. Users still share weird jokes, niche obsessions, all-caps emotional rants, and crudely cropped 2007 screencaps. Classic posts get re-posted, sometimes captioned "do you love the color of the sky," "yearbook of the internet," or simply "peak Tumblr."

We have a trio of hummingbirds that live and raise their chicks in our ancient orange blossom tree every summer for the past twenty years now. They DO stop flying and sit, either on the hummingbird feeder, the old phone/electric wires (it used to be part of a farm), or on tree branches. They also fight each other in mid air while chattering loudly, like they’re cussing at each other while fighting. I just love them.

My grandpa was born in 1909. He stayed by my grandma's side after she had a colectomy due to colon cancer. He did most of the cooking after he retired. He went grocery shopping with my grandma. They golfed together, and once she was unable to golf, he stopped. He taught me, his granddaughter, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and proper painting. He was lost when my grandma died, so I insisted he come to my house every single night for dinner and/or coffee and dessert. We did this for a year and a half until he had a massive stroke. To this day, I believe he was the greatest man who ever lived. I still miss him more than 20 years later (and my grandma too, because she was the greatest woman who ever lived).

Our EPA office seeded beach grasses to create nesting sites and improve sand retention on the gulf coast of MS. Today, the Least Tern nesting sites are a local treasure, the population has rebounded and is annually stable, and the beach where the grass dunes were created retains significantly more sand than the unprotected beaches - providing habitat and nesting grounds for the terns while reducing sand removal and replacement costs by millions of dollars. We did this project for $10,000 - total. Don't believe the corporate world's constant attacks on government as inefficient. I have patches of milkweed all over my yard. Every year, the Monarchs come and lay their eggs. I also leave plenty of leaf litter when autumn is done, because that's where fireflies lay their eggs. You should see my yard in midsummer. It's like being in space with stars all around. I must have thousands of fireflies every year. None of my monoculture lawn neighbors have fireflies. They're all in my yard.

IMO if you're flying with your children and have to pay a fee to ensure you're sitting next to them, you pay the fee. You should NOT have to pay a fee to sit with your kids, but airlines scam every cent they can, so you suck it up and pay the fee rather than taking the chance of your child sitting alone.

Cheaper to get a month's worth of regular birth control.pills. the actual number (2-5 and how far apart your should take them) depends on which pill you have but they can be used as emergency contraception. Plan B you only get one incident's worth and it is obvious abortion was the intention. If you "just got mixed up with your daily pills ", there's no way to prosecute, and there won't be anything of note on any medical records, because having dialy pills waiting for when you want to start them is legal.

I talk to my cats all the time, and they answer. I had a Siamese (Ralph), and we'd get into it about something he had done. I'd fuss at him, and he'd answer me; this would continue for a few minutes. My Rosie's a talker! She's super soft and has more fur than every cat I've ever had! She's the kind of soft where your fingers sink in and you almost can't feel it at first because it's so soft! She's also got a heart with stripes on her side. She's not a special breed that I'm aware of, she and our other cat Widget were both rescued from a hoarder's house and were clearly bonded. Widgets a tabby and still super, super-soft, too. Not as much fur, just really soft!

I've started to on occasion "accidentally" (but on purpose) not hang up my phone correctly when getting off a call with my daughter-in-law. I then proceed to talk to my husband about how much I enjoy talking to her, how lovely I think she is, how glad I am that our son chose her, and whatever other boost I may think she needs. She doesn't have any family that uplifts her, just the kind that tears her down. I started doing this after my son told me about his wife coming to him in full-on snot tears, because I had once butt dialed her while talking to my husband about her. She stayed on the line to hear what I "really" thought of her, expecting the worst because that's been her experience of family. Apparently she was quite touched by the things I said, and my son told me it gave her a confidence boost that lasted weeks. So I do it more often now. Neither of them have any idea I do it on purpose, though. They just think I'm getting old and worse at managing my tech

Our 11yo is starting that puberty phase where he’s occasion unsure of himself, second guesses & can lack confidence. He also feels really bad for slight mistakes or errors. Typical preteen emotion. So we try to make space away from him but in earshot to create whispered conversation “behind his back” about how incredible, kind, compassionate, intelligent, self-aware, etc. he is and how we hope he knows this about himself. We covertly celebrate what an amazing human he is. When we casually return to whatever space he’s in, we can see his slight smile & the vibrant glow. We know he’ll need validation from more than himself or us, but we try to give it to him always, and very pointedly when he’s down on himself.

Principal had a kid in his office due to disruption, and asked him to sort out some things he needed arranged. Principal left, and came back and every..single..one (there were about a hundred)was sorted by shape and color and lined up. IMO that kid had a future in logistics, principal agreed.

My sister is returning to uni soon to try and complete a certificate 4. She has had a couple of false starts with it, because of her ADHD, ASD and anxiety and I am hoping this time she will get through. She is 26 and keen to do more work in her field (screen & media) which she is fantastic at and has some experience with, but is struggling to get more work without this higher qualification. I'm hoping that in this last part of her course, or after it, I can work on a documentary about parent's and student's with additional needs experiences with education, comparing both mainstream and special school, which is a topic I am very passionate about as a teacher myself.

I think this is referring to Harvard (iirc) offering these classes to students. A point that I heard made about it was that they shouldn't have to attend somewhere that is charging exorbitant prices for attendance to get this, which is completely correct, however, there is need for them. Parents work more and more hours (especially in the US) in order to keep their heads above water, so they are struggling to teach these thing to their children. Schools already have so much packed into the curriculum, often it is hard to add this in too (though my school did teach us things like budgeting, how to apply for a rental, prepare for a job interview etc) so where does it get taught? Where I live, I think it should be offered at places like neighbourhood houses (which is like a community centre) or libraries, and open to all ages. Parents that also want to learn alongside their children (if they have the time) could do so, and it would be vastly cheaper.

My local neighbourhood house already has basic cooking classes (that I know some of the young people with disabilities attend with their support workers, for example. They are also open to hearing what the community needs and tries to plan things that are relevant. Some of the suggestions Harvard had were sewing on buttons, learning to budget, do washing, including how not to turn whites pink, do taxes, and I'm sure more I've forgotten. It's not just 'adulting' and I think it's not something people of any age should be shamed for needing to learn. It reminds me of my teaching course. We were always taught that parents are children's first educators. We need to respect that they know a lot about their children that we may not see. We also have to let them know that we know education in ways they probably don't, so we need a close relationship with parents so we can work together to do the best for them.

I can't imagine having no one turn up to a kid's party. My mum always made me accept invitations, if we were available, which I remember one time I wasn't happy with, but ended up having a great time. No kid should be alone on their birthday, but at least this is still a happy memory for the girl.

My MIL doesn't love animals.. she's scared by the smallest hamster and when we adopted two cats se said "I'll never be within a meter of this two animals.. and if they are aggressive? If they'll byte me?" .the years passed ...these two cat LOVE her and took every occasion to cuddle her ..they converted her in a "mild" cat lover.. one of the two cat passed away last year and my MIL still remember him as the most beautiful cat of the neighborhood.. a little black panther..at the end she loved him!

I also feel sorry for Netflix-era kids because they won't experience shows properly = 30 episodes per season released WEEKLY. Those "shows" with 8 episodes released all at once ain't "shows" anymore in my book. Those are 8-hour movies split into several parts.

Some of those filler episodes were terrible. There's a reason a lot of UK TV has always run in a short season format. Quality > quantity. (Except for Star Trek, since the long season format allowed experimentation.)

my mum dropped some absolutely insane lore once and I just thought about it and I want people to know about it, so here it is: My famalam was at dinner a few days after I'd been diagnosed with AuDHD and I made a joke about how I probably got it from my Pop (grandpa on my mum's side, he's deeeeeefinitely somewhere on the spectrum.) My mum sorta squints at me then goes "Chilli... You know that your Pop isn't my biological father, right?" And I'm like "???" And my mum's like "Yeah, my mum had me with another man, but then he cheated so my mum divorced him. Your Pop's first wife had cheated too so they were also divorced, he isn't biologically you grandpa. Your aunt Rachel isn't biologically your aunt either, she was your Pop's kid with his first wife, she's my step-sister." AND I'M LIKE "?????????????????????" And BOTH MY BROTHERS go "You didn't know?" NO THE F**K I DID NOT.

This made me think of the time my cousin and I were in the airport waiting to board our flight, but it was delayed for an hour so we started playing hide and seek in the waiting area. By the end of the hour, we were playing hide and seek with an entire football (soccer) team whose flight to London was also delayed. We were all in our early 20s.

We had a hive in our outside wall where a pipe had been removed, and the brick had fallen out. I'd walk right through all the ladies flying around. Never got stung. They knew me. I was sad when we had to call the bee removal people to come re-home them because the plumbers wouldn't work on the pipes with the bees there.

Really? From my experience it was 'quit crying or I'll give you something to cry about'. mom ready my diary so many times I came up with my own cypher/language. She could also swing a mean yardstick. I'm so glad I was blessed with amazing parents. I wish everyone could have grown up with a mom like mine. She was strict but we were very loved. I'm 50 years old and she's still one of my best friends. She's coming over to my place tomorrow to hang out. 😊

My mom became Gramma Sugar because she always called my nephew Sugar and one day he said it back to her. He wasn't even 2 yet, so the cuteness was overwhelming. My Dad is Pop-pop because my nephew heard my sister and I calling him Papa and he wanted to be like us. My nephew is 26 now and he and his sisters (17 and 22) still use those names.
