The individual freedom ends were the freedom of the next individual is impaired. A hard lesson many don't want to understand. Smoking can't be part of individual freedom and has to be regulated, because if smokers are allowed to do what they want, everyone else has to suffer. They get to decide if they want to poison themselves. But when it comes to smoking in public places they don't get to decide to poison others along with them.

Tbf, the whole second hand smoke thing is debatable. Scientifically speaking we still don’t know how exactly cigarettes cause lung cancer - statistically it’s linked, but what the mechanism is exactly is unknown. Before we’d made the link, one study done just after WWII found that smokers are 24 times more likely to get lung cancer. It was hailed as a breakthrough but while 24x sounds impressive, it also meant over 99% *didn’t* get cancer and those numbers were never taken seriously. And ever since, researchers have been trying to find similar “breakthroughs”, but the standards have dropped a lot. Data is massaged and selective - look at Andrew Wakefield. And how wine can be great one day and terrible the next in a different study. And it lead to the formation of the nanny state - all in our own best interests, of course. Undoubtedly studies like this have saved lives, btw - I’m not saying smoking is healthy. But I don’t blindly trust them either.

You're right not to blindly trust studies. And you're right to single out nutritional epidemiology. It's results are usually worse than useless, and only partially because it's hard to generate data. But the probability that smoking increases cancer risk is extremely strong.

That's 0.88 divided by one thousand. I started looking at medical literature. Starting as always with the earliest. First, smoking was found to be an antibiotic, effective at killing bacteria in the air. Fumigation. Then it was found that smoking does not cause skin cancer. Smoking a lot causes emphysema, but that cures itself when you stop for a few weeks. And it was discovered that giving workers a smoking break improves productivity. At a guess, incense kills more people than passive smoking. Quite possibly lung cancer from marijuana kills more, too, marijuana doesn't come with a tar filter.

My parents ran pubs and bars. I grew up in on-site apartments, usually directly above and well before the smoking bans came in. There was a fog of smoke 2 feet off the ground in my bedroom every night. When everyone at school was hacking and sputtering through their first stolen cigarette behind the bike shed, I could chain smoke a pack without any effect. I was also the only one who never got caught because teachers knew my clothes smelled of smoke as soon as I put them on so it wasn’t unusual. So basically, I’m f****d!!
