Pondering over what is the most dangerous thing in the world, some may think of natural disasters, guns, nuclear weapons, or certain animals, such as sharks. However, one is more likely to pass away from a falling coconut than a shark. Often, the seemingly innocent or "invisible" things may end up being more deadly than the things we imagine that put human lives at the most risk. In fact, in 2021, one of the most dangerous activities, skydiving, accounted for 10 fatalities, while hunger and malnutrition were responsible for around 9 million.

Reckless and dangerous activities, such as drunk driving, or unhealthy habits, such as opioids, alcohol, and tobacco use, are often responsible for more fatalities than any living animal (except for humans). Some time ago, a user on AskReddit asked, "What is far deadlier than most people realize?" Thousands of Redditors chimed in to share ordinary everyday things and unhealthy lifestyle habits which, at first glance, don't seem life-threatening, yet may be.

Below, we've compiled some of the most interesting responses from r/askreddit that are worth giving a read. Do you know of any more dangerous things that don't seem threatening yet could be under certain circumstances? Also, which unexpectedly dangerous thing from the list surprised you the most? Let us know in the comments!

"Alcoholism. It’s all “Teehee, mommy needs her wine!” and “Look at this sunscreen bottle that doubles as a secret flask!” until your liver gives out in your mid-40s. It’s sad that our culture has made alcoholism into some type of cute joke instead of recognizing how much it can destroy your body and life, and the lives of those around you."

The National Institute ofHealth created a study that graded different addictive substances on a scale that included ease of addiction, physical damage of addiction, societal cost of substance abuse, availability, and others. Alcohol came in third, after heroin and meth. This needs to be common knowledge.

Alcohol is a harddrug. But because it's socially acceptable it negative effects are ignored. Thus families are destroyed...

And people don't even realize their addiction! They make excuses already and find reasons to consume and treat alcohol like medication or some kind of tool to 'endure' stressful situations better and don't even realize they are already on the slippery slope of addiction. We definitely need better education about alcohol and how the addiction begins! When the negative, physical effects are already visible, it's far too late, then you're already so deep in that there's barely anything you can still do. But the truth is: the addiction begins as soon as you can't live without. As soon as you cancel an invitation or feel annoyed you'll have to face just one day without your fix, you are indeed addicted. Alcohol is NOT a neccessity, it is NOT a fun addition that's just needed for anything. It's a drug. And if you feel there has to be alcohol at your minor niece's birthday party for you to 'endure'the day, then yes, that's addiction. Because normal people can go to a party and stay dry

But in America if you’re poor you get free health insurance. And it is hands down the best insurance ever. Like you can have 12 babies for free and they get the free health care too. When you’re upper middle class, crappy health insurance is $20k a year and it covers NOTHING. Not eyes, not teeth, and the company’s are outrageous.

"Heat. Seriously. Not even "that much" of it. Few decades ago when I was in bootcamp, we were doing a 10 mile march. I'd had surgery a couple weeks before the march, which wasn't a problem for the march itself, aside from mild-moderate pain which caused me to sweat more than usual. For whatever reason (army), they forgot to set up water refill stations this day. 1 mile in, I was through all my water. 2 miles in, I was absolutely drenched in sweat. 6 miles in, I stopped sweating, but continued getting hotter. 9 miles in, I fell face-first into the dirt, completely unconscious and in a severe state of dehydration. Got rushed to the E.R., was told I was a few minutes away from never waking up. Totally messed up my insides now; I'm an old man but my guts (kidneys etc.) are done. I get migraines regularly, apparently it's an occasional side effect of a single exposure to severe heat stroke. Stay cool, drink lots of water."

I take 5 prescription meds a day, 2 of which have a warning in all capitals - AVOID DIRECT SUNLIGHT. When I first started on the meds I asked why the sunlight warning? Straight talking pharmacist told me, in no uncertain terms, ignoring that particular warning would contribute to me overheating, more susceptible to sunburn ie. skin cancer and dehydration. Needless to say, 10 years on those meds I'm still pale as milk, drink lots of water, use high factor sunscreen, stay in the shade and wear breathable clothes that cover me. Not just at night. Walking in the day too. I had a colleague who was overweight and decided to park across the street from our school and walk over. She was easily over 500lbs. So you would think would be very visible. But in the morning the sun was coming up and the glare was right in the eyes of those driving in. She literally disappeared into the glare crossing the road. I let her know she was putting herself in danger. The students all came about 30 minutes later and the glare was gone by then.

The first 2 births I've done went perfectly well. But the 3rd one... well, I was about to die. Had an acute c-section and had my tubes tied. Not that long afterwards I get severe problems breathing. Turns out that I had internal bleeding and I had lost over half the blood in my body. And yeah, you could say that the birth didn't cause this. But if I had tried giving birth naturally I and/or my baby would have died. The odds were better with the c-section. But my anxiety has been very unstable since. I love my kid so much but darn..... I would have loved it a lot if she'd just been born normally.

"Ibuprofen. I see multiple comments about how tylenol/acetaminophen goes through your liver, which is true, but that often leads people to take ibuprofen or other NSAIDs without thinking much about it. NSAIDs go through your kidneys and if you dont drink a lot of water you can ruin them. I had to take naproxen after getting my wisdom teeth out and I was so nauseous that I couldnt even drink water. fast forward a day and I’m in acute kidney failure in the hospital. It can especially be a problem with sports players who will take ibuprofen before playing then get all dehydrated because of the exercise. Make sure to Drink Water if you take ibuprofen."

Finally when I went to ER the first time with a reaction I was told it couldn't be the ibuprofen it must have been something else, they did not do any tests just told me I was wrong and sent me away. I believed them, had another migraine and ended up at the ER again, different staff and told to stay away from Ibuprofen as allergies are becoming more regular......maybe they didn't realise it was 1 person 2x in 3 days and thought there had now been 2 cases in 3 days, who knows....

But these were things I willingly chose. They were not done out of duress. So, I look at them as temporary hard things I’ve had to undergo to get to a place that is going to lead to more satisfaction in my life. That’s eustress. I’m motivated by it. I view these as positive changes in my life. Good stress is not on the same level as bad stress.

"Trucker here. I've had two blood clots in my legs from driving long distances and having my leg pressed against the corner of the seat for hours on end. One almost killed me. Apparently it's very common with truckers. You're supposed to stop and walk around every hour and a half to keep things circulating (which almost nobody does due to time constraints). The same thing happens in gaming chairs apparently - people forget to move their legs because they're so focused on the game. You don't need to worry so much if you're younger, but if you're a gamer who's a little older, please be aware."

I read years ago that before penicillin, about 60% of deaths could be attributed to infections of some sort of another, which makes sense. If you've no Tylenol or Asprin to act against inflammation and antibiotics to kill an infection, a simple cut not cleaned well enough could get nasty really fast. Even a tooth infection would do it.

There are actual rules on where these are supposed to be on a shelf in relation to each other, and in thy warehouse, too, as well as powdered having to be above liquid (not vice versa). If you have an accident at work that misses these two and requires a Hazmat team, you are in A LOT of trouble. I think there are many businesses too that are pretty cavalier about this.

With some meds, adding grapefruit screws up the way your body metabolizes the drug, so you end up with far more than the prescribed dosage. It can also work in the opposite way with other drugs, leaving you with less than the prescribed dosage. This is especially bad if you have high blood pressure or arrhythmia."

Often GPs have no exit strategy for coming off ADs. Even with low side effects drugs the physiological withdrawal symptoms can be significant. It took me months of reducucing dose and then waiting for symptoms to stabilise before reducing again. All the time without GP support so having to find my own route, with (understandably) concerned family members wanting me to stay on them.

You can stop taking AD's but only in a very slow way and only when there is a good reason for it like heavy side effects like brain zaps & Co. And do not over do this type of medication. I got from 20mg escitalopram to 5 mg way to fast (within 4 months). You really need to take your time. For every year you taken the Meds you take 4 months to reduce 5 mg. If you cannot cut the tablets anymore ask for the med in a fluid form.

The guy lost his balance, bashed his head on the kerb, and died from his injuries. It really is that easy. Our bodies are far more fragile than we think.

I turned around, and he was no longer behind me. I heard him yelling for help but still did see him. I look down and see his foot sticking up in the air above some floor boards. He fell through the floor into a well, and his legs were lodged in like a pair of open scissors. Luckily, with the help of my other friend, we were able to pull him out.

He was going to Alaska in bush country to go hunting. By himself. Now Alaska bush country means you are alone. He was dropped off and his ride wasn’t going to come back to pick him up for a week or 2. Well after his ride left the tooth he needed to get his root canal on blew up. Had severe pain and was all alone no one to help him in the middle of nowhere. This was mid to late 90s so no cell phone either. Well his ride came back to pick him up. Finds a dead body. The guy killed himself. He couldn’t take the pain anymore. Pain was so bad he couldn’t wait the one or 2 weeks for his ride to come back. Shot himself left a suicide note telling his story. It acts as an expectorant (facilitating removal of mucus from the lungs by coughing) and it increases blood pressure. The latter effect can become significant with a daily consumption of 50 g or more of licorice candy for as little as two weeks. Glycyrrhizin can cause potassium levels in the body to fall, triggering abnormal heart rhythms, as well as high blood pressure, edema (swelling), lethargy, and congestive heart failure in some people."

You have to remember that horses are prey animals and if they feel threatened they will bolt. If this happens grab hold of their mane as well as the reins, being thrown off while a horse is galloping is a 50/50 chance of you being hurt or worse.

Plus, they are significantly bigger than people give them credit for, reaching up to 6 or even 7 feet at the shoulder, able to weigh over half a ton, and are known to be very territorial and aggressive during mating season, killing more people than bears in Alaska."

It isn't the moose's antlers that you should fear. A moose will not gore you, it will simply stomp you to death, especially a cow protecting her calf. And if you hit one with your vehicle, you'll knock its legs out from under it and it will land in your windshield and total you and your car. Don't mess with moose.

Food for thought: Rule of thumb says leave two seconds between you and the car in front of you, right? Or 1 car length for every 10mph (~16kph). At 70mph (~112kph), it would take 245’ (~82m) to stop. Let’s say the average car length is 15’ (5m). That’s over 16 car lengths to stop. (2 seconds = 203’ or ~69m, which actually doesn’t give you enough to stop at this speed.) And before you can stop, your brain needs time to process the need to brake & react. Perception/reaction time is typically 2 seconds. 245’ + 206’ = 448’ (151m) total distance traveled between perceiving the need to stop and actually stopping. This assumes you remain in the same lane and come to a complete stop. So, a 4-5 second rule would be much safer.

On top of the head isn't so bad. But he might end up getting early dementia or memory loss if it happens often enough. The real problem is the back of the head, specifically the soft area where the spine meets the skull. It's in the perfect position to get hit if you fall backwards normally. This is why the coward's/king's punch is a one-hit k**l.

K so, I have a story to share. I was staying over at my now-husband's previous home. He'd gone to work, and I was coming downstairs. I lost my balance and fell down the last few stairs, hitting my head on the front door. There was SO much blood, like way more than I'd have imagined. Thankfully one of my hubby's housemates found me and called an ambulance. I somehow avoided injuring any of my bones, just got a couple of lacerations on my scalp. They glued one at the hospital but didn't find the bigger one. A few weeks later, my sis shaved my head for me because my scalp Psoriasis was getting pretty bad, and that's when we found this huge gash on my head that was starting to get infected.... Thankfully it's all healed up now; I can still feel the scar, it's quite an indent. I won't add a photo, but you get the idea. Scaaaary shizz.

People are sitting in prison for murder for doing this. The main active ingredient is called tetrahydrozoline. Once it enters your gastrointestinal tract, it can be absorbed by your intestines and end up in your blood, causing your blood pressure and heart rate to drop to potentially life-threatening levels. It really makes me wonder how many people have died due to people copycatting that scene in Wedding Crashers."

You're probably getting sick of my "in NZ" comments but this is worth considering. We have an actual training course and qualification for Confined Spaces work. It's not an easy course to pass and if you do pass, you need to have someone qualified as a "spotter" to be there all the time you are working in a confined space. It takes a lot of guts to work in a dark space not much bigger than your actual body with safety gear. That said, my 6' 4" 125kg son got his quals, loved the work. His spotter was a 5' 6" guy who couldn't pass the course because he couldn't hack the space. He was the best, most observant, situational aware guy my son worked with. My son refused to have anyone else spot for him.

I was playing around with my 1 year old kitten. He got a little too aggressive and bit my hand in such a way that he barely broke the skin on my index finger with one of his teeth. It didn’t even bleed. I washed the area immediately with soap and water, but within the hour, it had developed a tiny itchy blister on it. That’s when I knew it was bad. I went straight to urgent care for antibiotics. Animal bites + blisters (even teeny tiny ones) are VERY bad. Later the lab tests came back… Capnocytophaga. Google it and look at images, but only if you don’t want to sleep. Don’t mess with animal bites! Even if they can’t fit you in, most doctors will call in an antibiotic for you. Or if you live in a country where you can buy them directly… do it! BTW… I still have a scar on my finger from where it ended up ulcerating after the blister broke.

Cat's teeth are like dirty needles. So bacterias are pulled in deep into the flesh and cannot been washed out like dog bites. Therefore they you have a high risk of blood poisoning. How I got this knowledge? A good friend of mine got two nasty bites from her own cat, and got blood poisoning. She needed to be hospitalised and was treated with IV antibiotics. Luckily there was no need for an operation.

Human bites, dog bites, any bite can have a whole flora of micro organisms that are toxic to the person being bitten. We have all evolved our antibiotic reactions slightly differently due to different lifestyle and environmental exposures. Just because 9 people can be bitten with no problems don't assume the same for that 10th person.

just wut the ERs need. ppl go see ur dr. leave the ER for just that. wash well with soap and water. u can irrigate it urself. the problem w cat bites are that they create puncture wounds. puncture wound dont usually bleed that much. bleeding helps clean contaminate from the wound. thus puncture wounds have a higher risk of infection.

"Trains. You can be standing away from the tracks and they can still kill you. The train could be going fast enough to create suction and pull you under. It happened to a person walking by the tracks near Ottawa many years ago. Never attempt to climb on a train car, whether it is sitting or in motion. Sitting trains can start moving at any time, and a train in motion might take a limb with it. Trains can derail. If you're near the tracks, well...you're probably dead. Anything that isn't secured is going to be acting like a diesel powered whip. A steel strap being pulled by a fast freight train will chop you into little pieces. Containers fall from trains. If one lands on you, they're going to need a spatula to clean you up. And...for those who walk on the tracks...train time is ANY time, and depending on the direction of the wind and your attention span, you won't know the train is there until it's going through your body. And if it stops you from getting help or doing better, no one will care and step in because they 'admire' your 'honour'. Do what you need to do to help yourself or get help. Bear in mind that that tropical areas are moving north because of climate change. Many diseases that were previously confined to equatorial zones are now showing up in the Southeast.

Almost no one knows the bottom of them is a death trap of rotating undercurrent and almost no one knows how to escape one if you do get stuck in it. Even if you do know how to get out you'll have a hell of a time of it. If a kid gets stuck in one they're as good as dead, as is anyone who goes in to save them."

I think, in the UK, they have recently introduced a law that dogs must wear a 'seatbelt'. It's a doggy seatbelt in fact, and it clips them to the car seat, so no more flying doggos. I think there is a rumour that the doggo alliance is putting together an argument against this new law, on the basis that it denies them their 'canine right' to put their noses out of the window and flap their ears about in the wind. Although, that hasn't been confirmed as yet.

I manage my mums diabetes, sugar has to be checked before every dose. If it is in normal range she still get her dosage because of consistency issues but it is checked within 1/2 hr and if it has dropped she has some crackers and cheese or a biscuit. I always feel panicked when the diabetes nurse reminds me to keep the dosage consistent so i have to but you must monitor.

Ha! You’d think so, right? I looked up the study on this… death is 13%-14% more likely on birthdays and primarily for those 60+. Primary causes of death are related to: cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, cancer, and accidents & suicides (those last two are men only). So, the theory is that these are mostly older people, with medical issues, holding on to reach another milestone (their birthday). And for men… getting older can be depressing enough to be suicidal or to have careless accidents (this is where I think you’re right about the candles and liquor).
