There are plenty of seemingly innocent products and services out there that are just elaborate ways of getting you to part with your money. They might not try to bamboozle you as obviously as some spammers and con artists, but underneath all the glitz and glamor, they’re still scams.

Redditors have been sharing their opinions about what things they consider to secretly be giant scams after redditor MelteyReddit asked them to share their thoughts on this. In a viral thread, these redditors touched on everything from baby products and printer ink cartridges to a variety of questionable ‘health’ products and multilevel marketing companies. You could argue one way or the other for some of these, but that’s half the fun.

Check out what these people think are total scams, meant to get you to hand over your hard-earned cash, and upvote the opinions that you agree with as well. Disagree with any of these opinions? Know of any other things that you think aren’t much better than actual scams? Share your thoughts in the comment section. Meanwhile, be sure to read Bored Panda’s in-depth interview with the author of the thread, MelteyReddit.

People Are Revealing 50 Things That Are Scams This might be unpopular but here goes.... The Catholic church. Currently worth 30 billion, the Vatican has 8 billion in assets . In 2014, it was discovered they were hiding 1.1 billion off the books. Why aren't these funds going to the poor? In 2019 it was discovered the Vatican was heavily invested in unreported luxury apartments. Then there's the ugly stuff all this money is financing; Until 2014, the age of consent in Vatican city was 12. Yes. Twelve - the lowest age of consent in the world. It was only changed after the pedophilia scandal took hold. Then there's the wide history of evils brought on by the church; the ivory trade, castration of young boys (castrada), the Spanish Inquisition, Holocaust denial, cutting funding for the poor with LGBQ ties and on and on.... The Catholic church provides a thin veneer of "good" for their followers, but for centuries they've been feeding corruption beneath the surface and continue to do so.

One of the great mistakes of recent Western thinking was the decision to push so many of the young towards higher education (and in to degrees of limited use) and away from apprenticeships. This has resulted in heavily indebted graduates who are of no use to the job market and an extreme skill shortage.

MelteyReddit personally believes that it’s vital to know where your money is going. “I always try to stay up to date with where my money is going. If you are unsure if something is a scam, you can try looking it up on the internet to see how other people feel about it,” they urged people to do their own background research before purchasing something. What’s more, if your gut says that something’s off, chances are that something fishy is actually going on.

In MelteyReddit’s opinion, there are a few things that stand out and scream that something’s secretly just one big giant scam.

“I think the best way to recognize one is by a few factors, [for example,] if they are really pushy about a product that they wanna sell or if the website design/product design looks fake/rushed. Or if they ask an unreasonable amount of money for their product,” they shared their take on how to recognize hidden scams. “An answer posted a lot on my post was the lottery or casinos. Of course, we can't forget those.”

The author of the post added that they’re thrilled and thankful to everyone who engaged with their thread on r/AskReddit. “I want to thank everyone for answering my post, it means a lot to me!”

For an earlier article, I’d spoken with one of the mods helping run the r/Scams subreddit, a community that helps support the victims of scams and help inform them about the various ways criminals might try to bamboozle them.

One of the mods told Bored Panda that rudimentary research, education, and preparation all make a huge difference when trying to recognize scams for what they are. Nobody is ever 100% foolproof, no matter how insightful and perceptive they might be, but it’s always better to educate ourselves. Internet scams, in particular, can be more difficult to recognize in some cases because you’re no longer dealing face-to-face with a real-life person.

“When you have a real person in front of you, a typical person will feel shame or guilt at the thought of taking advantage of a person. With the internet, you aren't dealing with a person, but a username and avatar. It is much easier to act maliciously when you don't have a real victim directly in front of you," they explained.

A bit lacking in elaboration here so: Planned obsolescence is the practice of artificially making a product's lifespan shorter so people will replace it more often. This leads to a massive waste of resources and towering amounts of hardware trash that most often isn't recycled. Poisoning the planet all in the name of profit. If you wonder why phones seem to generally break just in time for a new generation of phones that's why. Nokia bricks was never as profitable as today's iPhones which a lot of people replace semi-anually. Imagine building yourself a house but not making it as sturdy and long lasting as possible. Planned obsolescence is seriously a horrifyingly Earth-destructive strategy. Another good example is light bulbs, which early models could last many years or even decades but today's light bulbs are manufactured to last about a year. Getting a person to make a decision via high-pressure tactics and preventing them from reflecting and making a sound decision is key," the mod from r/Scams told Bored Panda earlier.

"If a deal is too good to be true, it is. If you see a pair of brand new Apple AirPods advertised for $50, you are not getting an authentic product. There are many counterfeit items out there on the market, and you need to verify authenticity before hitting buy," they said.

When I learned a photographer alone runs $5000 minimum I almost puked. And a lot of venues didn’t give a s**t about covid and hosted packed weddings, resulting in deaths because “wE gOtTa MaKe MoNeY sOmEhOw” Absolute slime balls. Now before all the vendors dog pile me, let me be clear, I’m fully aware why you guys charge as much as you do. I also hope you understand why an average person like me looks at the price and says hell no. And for those that want a conventional wedding: If you can swing it, do whatever you want. My wife and I did a Sandals all-inclusive vaca/wedding/honeymoon, which has its own pros and cons but still a no-brainer due to the cost and convenience.

I was never one of those little girls who drooled over Brides magazine. I always liked the idea of eloping, because of the privacy. I worked hotel front desks for years, and can tell you with certainty that the bride and groom get zero privacy if they book a room in the same hotel where their reception is held. Drunk friends never just let them be. Well, I didn’t elope when I got married, but we did just gather a few friends and go to the courthouse. Then our friends took us to a really expensive dinner, and one of them handed us the keys to her beach house—-we were just going to stay home with the door locked and the phone off for a week. It was an entirely satisfying wedding and honeymoon. We just celebrated our 20th anniversary in May 2021.

We rented a cabana area at the local botanical garden, bought party trays from a taco shop and a friend made our cake. It was Halloween (yeah we're geeky) so we dressed in costume. Total cost was under $500. My philosophy is that the wedding isn't important. It's the marriage that counts. The wedding need not be huge or expensive.

When I was younger I had all these big plans for a wedding including releasing butterflies, an ice sculpture, flowers everywhere etc. But as I got older I realised I didn't want or need any of that fru fru. I organised my wedding in 3 months, had a budget of $5000 and it was an amazing day. The only thing I would change is hiring a professional photographer instead of using a family friend.

They charge what they charge BECAUSE it has the "wedding" tag. Compare cake prices for birthday Vs wedding. Compare venue hire for a regular party Vs wedding reception. Suit hire. Flowers (only quantity comparison seems to be funerals, and at least one site was cheaper for funerals than weddings). Don't buy a wedding dress, get a prom dress and save hundreds of dollarpounds. Insert the W word and charge a fortune. For the record, I got married ten years ago for a total cost of less than £5000

exactly. As for the cake we actually bought 5 smaller cakes (saw it done on a different wedding and found it great that people could choose). We've got 2 different chocolate cakes, carrot cake, raspberry cheesecake and cream cheese cake and all in all they were like 150 usd. And we didn't mind they were not "decorated for a wedding", they were delicious! As for the flowers we've bought some from the florist and didn't tell them they were for a wedding and then we made the bouquets ourselves (it was a mix of dried flowers and sunflowers for an autumn wedding).

My daughter got married last November. We truly made it a family affair. My husband (stepdad) officiated. I made the cake and cookie favors. Her sister is a photo & handled the pictures. I bartered hair services for a wedding cake with our stylist. Her brother handled taking pics at our photo booth. She paid for dress, her flowers, venue & reception food (pop up trailer...delicious dinner). People can have beautiful, fun weddings and not spend $20K. My daughter also kept cost down by only inviting close friends, and close family members. We had around 50 people.

Friends of mine saved for ages for their fabulous wedding. They booked the venue, paid the caterers and florists etc then realised that they had saved enough to make a good deposit on a unit. They cancelled everything, did the wedding at a registry office, and bought the unit, rented it out as they took a working holiday around Europe for a year. The smartest thing they ever did I, and most of the family and friends, think.

This is no BS. I compared in the bay area of California. The SAME flower arrangements for a birthday were hundreds less than for a wedding. The same thing happened with the cake. Both were slated to be pretty, feed 70 people, and have pretty flowers cascading down in a spiral. The "birthday " version was hundreds less, simply because I said it was for a birthday.

All that money, stress & effort for one day is dumb. I’d rather take the money & go on a 2-3 week honeymoon/vacation. Unless you have family who is paying for it the gifts are not worth it as you are lucky if you break even in costs not to mention all the time you put on. Got married in the backyard in a wedding dress from Salvation Army ($100). It was a pot luck but As a waitress, my boss got us meats and fish at cost as well as several cakes. I put three flourless torts on top of each other to make a beautiful tiered chocolate cake. Easy peasy. My brother was a bartender so he set up the bar ($500 for liquor). We got wholesale flowers, paid a friend to decorate with the flowers, which was beautiful and added so much. Had a fiddle and cello for the wedding portion ($100), and a mix tape for the reception. 2 photographer friends took photos. It was so much fun and people said it was one of the most loving weddings they’d been to. <$3,000. But that was 30 years ago.

Literally plan the event without ever saying the word "wedding" and it's less than half the money. Vendors see "wedding" and jacks of the price because they can. Go get a big cake for a graduation or something, same cake, and it's a fraction of the cost for a wedding cake.

My OTHER pet peeve. The wedding is short ritual, the BEGINNING of a life together. Save that money for cans of tuna, for diapers (if needed). Wedding gowns? No, your daughter won't wear it, it's unfashionable. Your granddaughter might ("vintage") but maybe not. You're going to store it for 30 years? Fantastic feast for 200? Do you know how delicious potlucks are? Seriously....as a loving Officiant (who charges NOTHING) I tend to see marvelous weddings where the beloved friends provide the fare, the decorations, &c. The community into which the "new family" is recognized, provides. Newlyweds are not served by starting out with a debt.

I feel the same way about engagement rings. I told my husband I didn't want one when we were dating and rather put that money towards a honeymoon. It was still romantic and memorable as hell when he proposed in our favorite camp spot, no ring needed! We got married on our local beach with a small group of family and friends. Had a party at our place after and had a great time. With all the money we saved we honeymooned in Costa Rica for 2 weeks having adventures and staying at the best hotels. Also bought some dirt bikes and took a bunch of camping trips and tickets to see our favorite comedians and I'm sure plenty more cuz big weddings are stupid expensive. Eight years later and we're so happy we made those choices. Especially when we see other couples going through hell the weeks before their weddings, stressing out and questioning even having the one. No thanks.

Our vows are just as valid after a $300 fee Registry Office wedding. I found no reason to spend a fortune on a dress or for bridesmaids or any of the rest of the paraphernalia. It wouldn't have made the marriage any more valid nor memorable, We then took 12 of our closest friends to dinner.

Very overrated indeed, throw in the bridezillas, now you’re set, I remember back in the day, people would go get their marriage certificate from the court house, rent out a hall, hired a band, pot lock type things from family, lots of money left over for the bride and groom, every one had a great time

10 years ago my husband and I eloped by getting married just outside of Zion NP. We went to a beautiful cliff with our officiant and photographer said our vows, had a nice dinner and spent the next week exploring and adventuring. It was as stress free as they come and cheap. I would recommend eloping to anyone if they are considering it.

Always heard that when you're pricing cakes, flowers, photographers etc to never mention they are for a wedding. The prices are inflated once the word wedding gets involved. Keep in mind that I have no idea if this is the overall reality. I just know that's what my photographer friend attributes for being able to do her second wedding so low cost.

So weird. We had an amazing small wedding (30 people). The venue was $920, the catering together with the cake was $1040, the dress and suit were $690, the rings were $550. As for the decoration we did most of that ourselves (dried flowers, pinecones, wood, printed out pictures, fairy lights we already had, invitations..), we've bought just a few things for like $150 and then we paid the legal fee which was like $90. The photographer was our friend and we have him $230. Also we paid accomodation for our parents. So all in all around 4000 USD. I would NEVER pay 10,000 USD for one day, I would much rather spend it on honeymoon (which unfortunately we didn't have because of covid).

No one is happy, no one is having fun. It's just a room full of zombies feeding the machines and losing money. Every person I talk to is convinced that they know the secret formula to win. You cannot win. It might sound trivial but the old slots were just a spinning reel. These new machines are extremely addictive. The way the lights flash and the sounds go off like: Bing Bing BING. Why not just ban the use of single use plastics? It is easy - and quite a few countries have taken major steps in this direction. We can (and have in the past) relied on glass bottles, paper bags, paper straws, card burger containers, card ear bud shafts etc. etc.. Profits need not be affected (heaven forbid!) and most/many consumers would tolerate the tiny increase in prices.

Eating/drinking raw eggs. The proteins found in eggs only become useful to your body after the structures are changed by applying heat aka cooking them. There's not only no point choking back a raw egg. You're also absorbing less protein from it than if you were to cook it. "Cooked eggs have a bioavailability of around 91% for protein, while protein from raw eggs only is 50% bioavailable (Evenepoel et al., 1998)."

A literal Queen, wearing a crown, who believes that she was sent by God to sit on a gold throne. And we have to sing a song asking for her longevity at football games. NFTs. There will be a market for these in some form, but we are hip-deep in the rowdy, scam-filled early days.

I feel so much better after a visit to the chiropractor (once or twice a year) that I fail to understand the scam. I wanted my back to feel better and it does after I leave, service given, service paid for. Where was the scam?

I know this post was meant for the video games (I've checked the reddit post) but it could also apply to actual real football (or soccer for US) games.

I've heard Susan G Koman only gives 20% of donations to cancer research. The rest goes to administrative costs and advertising.

Home Advisor and Angie’s List. Please stop using them. Each time you search for a contractor you generate a “lead” that then goes to a contractor on the network who gets charged a hefty sum for your “lead”, even if you aren’t really serious at all about the project you are looking up. The contractors have to pay for that lead regardless if you talk to them or not. The prices of these leads range between 50-300 dollars. Here’s where it gets REAL f***y. Both of those companies are owned by the same parent company (IAC) and leads generated on Angie’s list are turned around and sold to multiple other contractors on Home Advisor who also get charged for them even if the job for that lead has already been completed. Every single thing about these services is a titanic scam and I cannot fathom how these organizations are allowed to exist.

I just look for local business that have been operating for decades. As soon as someone tells me they or their company are on Angie's List, I tune them out.

Supermarket orchids. They're planted in poor, degrading substrate and need to be repotted asap. But people don't and they die after at most a year, and the cycle continues.

I call BS. I have a supermarket orchid that I never repotted, I bought it about 3 years ago and it's always been flowering since then. At the moment it has only about 5 flower heads, but it's leafing out new green leaves, so the energy is a little diverted.

The Graduate record examination (GRE). It predicts only socioeconomic class, not success in graduate school. It’s expensive and stressful, and everyone from psychology to engineering take the same math portion, which COMPLETELY f***s the norms. Luckily, thanks to covid closing testing centres its being waived as a requirement for psych programs, and it may never come back.

Dude tbh, GRE is such a scam especially mathematics. I kid you not an eighth grader from Asia can easily score full marks in it. It's just so easy and nowhere near judging a person's true capabilities for math specifically

All those ads on podcasts. They claim to be a better way to "blank" when in reality they have crazy mark up prices. In my opinion they are middle class traps.
