You should be waking up at 5 a.m. each day to maximize productivity. But a good night’s sleep is crucial, and you shouldn’t sacrifice it for anything. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day! But if you’re not intermittent fasting until the afternoon, you’re going to gain weight. And don’t you dare put oat milk in your coffee if it has seed oils in it!
There’s a lot of contradictory information floating around health and wellness spaces. While being healthy was once as simple as eating a balanced diet, staying active and maintaining relationships with loved ones, people are constantly trying to complicate it to make a profit or simply confuse you. That’s why Reddit users have recently been discussing potentially harmful trends, behaviors and more that people often assume are “healthy." Keep reading to find a conversation with Kevin Pho, MD, and be sure to upvote the things you don’t trust either!

The rat race. We should really switch to a capybara or manatee race, slow things down a bit.
There's so much more to life. All I'm missing is a lot of late nights of overtime, stress about things I don't fully believe are anything to stress about and a lot of bullshitting who I really am.
Detox anything. Your body has organs literally for this purpose.
Your liver is your biological detox! You only help it when it is medically necessary as per your Dr.!
Yeah, any actual "detoxing" involves a hospital and invasive therapy from a specialized IV to blood replacement to dialysis
With certain medical conditions, you have to change your diet, thus "detox" your body of harmful stuff. For example celiac. But to completely get rid of all gluten from body even after switching to gluten-free diet takes months, like 3-6. Not weekend.
Thank you. "Detox" should be applied to the diet, not the body. You take toxins out of the food you eat, therefore limiting your toxin intake. Not, eat some pill or tea to remove toxins from your body. Detox diets are awesome, detox products are snake oil.

Most detox pills/teas/mlms use dieretics/laxitives (like licorice root/senna). Its not very healthy.

Load More Replies...We currently live in the midst of air that is polluted everywhere; we drink only water and other fluids that are filled with bacteria, poison to k**l that bacteria, concentrated sugars and alcohols, etc.; we eat foods grown in depleted soil……….in other words, the environment that our bodies and livers evolved in is no longer the environment that we live in. Our current environment and diet is much more toxic.
This is a very subjective take on environmental conditions. It matters where and how you live, for sure, but in many global areas, the air and water are cleaner than they were 50-100 years ago, after the industrial revolution and before environmental protection legislation. I grew up in the 80s when women took diet pills while they were pregnant and we all thought diet soda was fine. Arguably, the life I live now is way safer and healthier than my childhood. But, go ahead and rot yourself with doom and negativity.

I'm a yoga instructor and I constantly have to remind my students that doing advanced poses without proper form isn't pushing yourself it's just asking for injuries.
Like any exercise, work up to the levels, don't start at the top.
If you’re doing yoga and it hurts, ease back a bit. It’s a progressive exercise.
I began my yoga poses and breathing back in the 70's and kept it up, for the most part, until a couple of years ago. If I were to begin again, and I will, I'd have to start at the beginning and work my way to advanced poses.
To find out more about what's actually healthy and what's not, we got in touch with Kevin Pho, MD. He was kind enough to have a chat with Bored Panda and break down which trends we should be avoiding.
"One common trend is the overuse of supplements," the expert shared. "Many people assume that because something is labeled 'natural,' it’s automatically safe and beneficial. But too much of certain vitamins or minerals—like vitamin D or iron—can actually be harmful."
"Another example is extreme dieting or detoxes," Dr. Pho continued. "These often promise quick results but can disrupt metabolism, gut health, and even mental well-being."
"Pain is just weakness leaving your body"
No, pain is you damaging your body in a bad way. It's okay to be sore after exercise, but at no point should there be any pain.
Pain is your body telling you, enough a$$hole, you're hurting me!
Like yoga, I also did weight lifting, so I heard this foolishness a lot in gyms. Sure, you'll be a bit sore the next day after using muscles you don't normally use, but pain is not acceptable results.
Cutting out all fats.
Fat is actually protective of the brain and organs otherwise. It also protects the brain against Alzheimer’s and similar diseases.
I wonder if there will be a corresponding rise in Alzheimer's occurrence in the people who were young adults or teens when this "wisdom" became the rage.
Load More Replies...My cholesterol was getting too high for my liking, but I can't take cholesterol medications due to the side effects, so I cut out meat. But not fish. Lucky me, I prefer fatty fish like salmon, tuna, sardines, and mackerel. Matter of fact, I had sardines on toast for lunch today.
The problem is that we really don't know enough about how our body processes energy, but it was just so tempting to use weight as the new "she's not a virgin anymore" for shaming women, so a lot of s**t was told without solid background. And the specialists who did know it was more complicated than that weren't listened to or didn't speak up to begin with.
Chugging a gallon of detox juice. congrats! you’re just starving with expensive pee 😂💁♀️.
Can't bring myself to drink something that particular, virulent shade of green. It screams poison!
The only "detox juice" I drink is water. Does a wonderful job all on its own. I do like the occasional glass of pomegranate juice, but that's it.
So why is there so much confusion about what's healthy and what's not?
"The health information landscape is incredibly fragmented. On one side, you have doctors and scientists trying to communicate evidence-based recommendations," Dr. Pho explained. "On the other, you have influencers, celebrities, and companies promoting products and lifestyles that often prioritize profit or virality over science. Add in constantly evolving research—sometimes with conflicting results—and it’s no wonder people feel overwhelmed."
"Also, let’s be honest: fear and hope sell. A message that says 'eat more vegetables and walk every day' isn’t as flashy as 'this superfood will change your life,'" the expert continued. "But the former is what actually helps. The challenge is getting people to see through the noise."
I still hear people talking about getting “a healthy tan” when they are actually (and quite obviously) burning their skin with UV radiation.
I’m not talking about general outdoor lifestyles (we all need Vitamin D), but the dedicated pursuit of a tan.
There is a cultural heritage in the UK where burning to a crisp on the beach/by the pool with no sun cream (or just low factor/oils) was a sign of social status when you got home and showed off your melanin infused skin (or even a nice bit of UV radiation scarring) in the pub or office.
“Look at my blistered arms, I can afford two weeks in Spain!”,
At best this is damaging your largest organ and prematurely aging your appearance, at worst you are drastically increasing your chance of melanoma skin cancer, but is somehow seen as wholesome and worthy of envy.
It’s sunny here today for once though, so I’m getting my shirt off!!
I think I may be one of the lucky ones, at least so far at 75. I worked on a farm in the 60's during my summers and with no hat and short sleeve shirts in the summer sun. So far I have not had any cancer, BUT I don't by any means think I am out of the woods. The slightest brown sport on my body gets a visit to the Dr.'s, ASAP!
Any spots you get should be checked out. Sometimes they don't look like anything other than a raised area or a dry patch of skin mistaken for a barnacle or a skin tag.

Waking up extremely early for no literal reasons other than “being productive” I’m not saying this is the case for everyone but a lot of these influencers seem to be depriving themselves of quality sleep by waking up at 4am everyday and going to sleep at 12am.
I go to sleep around 10pm and wake up at around 5am every single day because I need to pee. Once I'm awake I can't get back to sleep again no matter how tired I feel, so I might as well get up and be productive.
That's a good 7 hours of sleep, so nothing wrong with it.
Load More Replies...I am firmly convinced that our current 'leadership' (Elon, Trump) are deranged due to sleep deprivation. A cautionary tale.
I think there's other factors (narcissism) but sleep deprivation really wouldn't surprise me.
Load More Replies...I'm not trying to be productive, I am trying to sleep, but I have a weirdo cat that always feels like jumping into my spleen at 5 in the morning, and another weirdo cat that only loves to cuddle 10 minutes before or after the jumping one. Then she wants to change position every 5 minutes, just enough to wake me up. By the time they are both done and they go back to sleep, I have no chance of that. I love them both very much. Less so around 5.
I go to sleep around 8pm ad wake up around midnight for no other reason than that's when I am tired and that's how long I sleep.
I'm completely backwards of that. I usually can't sleep until 2-4a and up by 10-noon. The beauty of being retired.
That sounds ideal to me, but noon at the VERY earliest. I’m 44 and that’s what my weekends are like (I’m just at home).
Load More Replies...Generally to tell people to wake up at a set time is the hallmark of an idiot. Different people have different sleep/wake rhythms. We all know it. Waking up at 4 am doesn't make you a hero of productivity if that's not your good time to wake up, it makes you an idiot who harms themselves because of some online persona told you to.
Isn't it common knowledge that most of these influencers lied about walking up at ungodly hours?
Spent 7 years waking up at 4:45 to go to work because of the long commute and it was absolute hell each and every day. I now wake up at six, which is a tiny bit better, but I'd much rather wake up between 7 and 7:30 (the reason I don't is because it would mean travelling to work during rush hours, which I loathe)
Biologically inappropriate fad diets.
Most fad diets are started to increase the income of the person who invents them.
Veganism has been around for decades if not centuries and started for humane reasons, not as a diet.
Load More Replies...We also asked the doctor for advice on how to spot what's simply a harmful fad or trend. "Start by asking: What’s the evidence? Who’s behind this claim, and do they stand to profit? If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is," he told Bored Panda. "Talk to your primary care physician. They know your medical history and can help you assess whether something is right for you."
"You can also look at reputable sources—like the CDC, Mayo Clinic, or trusted medical journals," Dr. Pho continued. "On KevinMD.com, I try to spotlight voices from the front lines—clinicians who share what really works with patients, not just what’s trending."

I´ve heard a fair few people say they switched from cigarettes to vaping and think they made a huge improvement.
It´s good to get off cigs, but not the best replacement?
I can't believe the amount of people who think that inhaling any kind of chemical into their lungs is good for them.
Well technically Oxygen Nitrogen, Argon, and Carbon dioxide are chemicals too , and it is kinda healthy to inhale those in your lungs.
Load More Replies...I'm pretty sure vaping is better than cigarettes, just as a replacement. But starting to vape because it's cool is idiotic, it's still harmful, just less than cigarettes. Bonus fun fact: tobacco plants store the element polonium in their leaves. Polonium is radioactive (that's the stuff Alexander Litvinenko was poisoned with in London, if you remember the case) so lung cancer you get from smoking is actually radiation damage. I was working at a radiochemistry lab at the time, so after Litvinenko I got to analyse a lot of urine samples for polonium. I could tell if someone was a smoker by the amount of polonium I found in their urine.
Popcorn lung will k**l you quicker than cancer etc from cigarettes. Both are harmful.
Load More Replies...I needed to start smoking again after El Naranja Culero was re-elected, that and Menopause, so instead of going back to Camels, I started vaping. Vaping is still bad for you but smoking is worse. I actually researched this.
The limited number of studies on vaping do show that it's significantly less harmful than smoking, but it is damaging nonetheless.
It's better for those around them. I don't mind people vaping around me. Cigarette smokers clothes give off toxins long after they put the cigarette out. They exhale toxins for up to three hours too.
Smoking is smoking, remember, a rose by any other name is still a rose. Smoking by any other name is still smoking.
"Give yourself permission to slow down. Health isn’t about extremes—it’s about sustainable habits. Walk more. Sleep well. Eat real food. Build relationships. Those don’t make headlines, but they build resilience. And that’s what real wellness looks like," Dr. Pho added. "And finally, don’t underestimate the power of asking questions. Whether it's your doctor, a pharmacist, or a credible online source—get curious. Empowered patients make better choices."
Learning to “take a joke”
No, conditioning yourself to just shut up and bottle your feelings when you’re upset over something that was “just a joke” is not healthy.
I’m not saying there will never be times where you feel upset by something that maybe shouldn’t have upset you, but instead of shoving those feelings down where they’ll get packed in like gunpowder ready to go off later, explore *why* you feel upset. Sometimes, it’s legitimate; somebody was mean to you and wanted to gaslight you into thinking you’re the problem so they could get away with it. Other times, you’re having a response based on your trauma/social conditioning and you have to treat it kind of like a phobia; an irrational response that you have to learn how to manage and communicate to others, with a reminder to yourself that nobody is trying to hurt you.
"Just a joke" is a narcissistic way of somebody trying to invalidate your feelings when they have deliberately done or said something hurtful to you. Believe me, though, they can give but they can't take it. My ex-husband was a serial prankster and thought he was the funniest person on the planet hurting and humiliating others. When somebody got one over on him he would go crazy with rage.
I have a very acidic sense of humor. When I began teaching adolescents, I quickly saw how a "joke" could wound them, particularly in front of their peers. Did I stop making cutting remarks? No, but I started making all of them about myself. Just as much laughter, and probably more.
My manager is a d**k. She's always saying c**p to us then pulling the "I'm just joking" switch. Apparently the punchline is whatever mistake we do. I can smell the BS from a mile away.
This one is a bit odd. There is a difference between the normal "take a joke" and what the poster is basically describing as mental health issues.
Decent people, when they make a joke and another person gets hurt, especially someone we (should) care about, are more worried about having hurt that person than about the joke they've made. Their answer would be "Oh sorry, didn't mean to upset you. I really meant nothing by it". They do NOT say: "Oh, come on, can't you take a joke?".
Mean people suck. I used to listen to what they said. Now I wonder why they feel they need to be mean.
For some people, it seems that in order to feel good about themselves they need to drag someone else down. Had a girlfriend like this, once. We're not together any more.
Load More Replies...Except that they are. Anyone who claims someone else "can't take a joke" is not joking. They are bullying, abusing, harassing, belittling and/or actively trying to cause harm with their words. No one should ever have to TAKE a joke because that means it's a-busive to THEM. Laughing at a joke that harms no one is enjoying a joke, sharing a joke, not "taking" a joke. If you have to be the punchline, it's NOT a joke.
Muffins. I used to bring donuts to meetings but was asked to bring muffins instead because they’re healthier. They are twice the calories of the donuts. .
Donuts are deep fried, so muffins can still be healthier, depending on what ingredients you put inside
There is more to healthfulness than calory count. Such as how much sugar is in an item. What other ingredients are in the item (whole grains, fruit, nuts, seeds).
Except they're gross, dried out, pasty, crumbly things. They have the same texture as bad quality gluten-free bread.
Load More Replies...Donuts or muffins, both are trash food. Why quibble, just enjoy not too often.
Entree salads at restaurants are deceptively high in calories and fat.
Using Chili's to illustrate this point.
-The quesadilla explosion salad is 1,420 calories and 99g of fat.
-The surf and turf 10oz sirloin, shrimp, mashed potatoes, and broccoli is 750 calories and 33g fat
(sirloin and shrimp 450cal + mashed potatoes 260cal + broccoli 40cal) (Fat is 20g+13g+0g) nutrition info was sourced from Chili's website.
The dressings are usually what can make a salad unhealthy. Skip that and you're (a lot) better off.
You might as well just sit in the garden and graze then, for all the taste you get. The entire point of a salad is to add something wet-ish to make it all work together into multi-ingredient bites. If you have no dressing, you just have a bowl of lettuce and a few other things that you have to eat separately and don't get the full enjoyment of the salad mouthfeel and the ingredient taste-blend. It's just a bowl of raw leafy things.
Load More Replies...If you're dining at Chili's why do you care? The food is highly processed garbage.
Calories go over my head. It's a term of measurement of energy in the food. Not an actual, specific particle of something, like vitamins, metals, minerals and fats.

Fat free food.
Fat free doesn't mean calorie free. It also often has added sugar toake it taste good, because fat is flavor. Same deal with sugar free.

Protein bars/shakes. I get that they have their place for people working out, but I know way too many very sedentary office workers who are very overweight, do not work out at all, and yet eat multiple protein bars a day convincing themselves that it is good for their health.
The sedentary office job was the worst for me. I didn't know how unfit I was until I got into a physically demanding job. It took a few months to not need someone helping me do the simplest of tasks. Many of the people at my old job I noticed were dying in their 60s and very overweight.
Most people who work out don’t need them either. Too much extra protein in your diet is a sure way to damage your kidneys and cause digestive issues. Your body cannot digest extra protein, like taking too many vitamin tablets, and will just c**p it out. Unless you’re on steroids or an Olympic athlete, if you eat a balanced diet you don’t need extra protein:
As a person who needs alternative protein (pescatarian with a tree nut allergy) and prefers non-chocolate candy bars, they're fine on occasion. Just need to watch what I pair with it the rest of the day.
Activated charcoal toothpaste. It just wears down your teeth. Honestly I bet it’s better to just use water than charcoal. Same with those all natural no fluoride toothpastes. They aren’t good. It’s funny how much people hate fluoride when it’s just as natural as sodium which is salt. Both are just minerals. I don’t know much about the subject though.
Also people are so scared of scientific names. Like sodium is so scary to them when it’s just salt. They panic when they see acids in the ingredients. Thinking it’s toxic because acid. When lemons are acidic. Also just because something has a shorter ingredient list does not mean it’s healthier. Also from what I’ve heard European food labels don’t have to include as much infromation as ameircan ones and can often say stuff like “spices” and not name it. And can use more common vs scientific names for stuff. But I may be wrong about that. But a lot of people use that fact for fear mongering.

Those weird “healthy” versions of junk food you see in organic grocery stores. No, chips don’t suddenly become healthy because you left the skin on the potatoes. I’m sorry. Plus, if you look at the ingredients list on that stuff, it’s often longer and has more weird ingredients than the basic version. I was shocked. My husband and I lived for a while near a place that sold itself as a “healthy food” grocery store. Their fresh fruit and vegetables (actually healthy stuff) was miniscule, half an aisle. The rest was weird supplements and processed junk. It shocks me people think that stuff is healthier than fresh whole real foods.
Trader Joe's never has weird ingredients. I never even have to read the list, I can just trust it.
You want healthy chips, slice them yourself and use a very hot vegetable oil and DRAIN THOROUGHLY. Otherwise, it's the same junk with different additives. And your "organic" food probably isn't, the food labeling laws are awful.

Never worked myself to death but did work myself to the point where I had to make a decision to either spend time with my sons and lose $8000.00 a year in income or quit my job and take a lower income position to make sure I could take them to practice and games. One thing that many people believe is healthy but actually isn’t is fruit juices. While they seem like a great source of vitamins, most commercial fruit juices are packed with sugar and lack the fiber found in whole fruits. This can lead to blood sugar spikes and contribute to weight gain over time.
In France, fruit juice has no added sugar, or it can't be called fruit juice. There are two kinds, either pure juice or watered down concentrate, and that must be specified on the container. Anything with added sugar is either called "nectar" (fruit purée with water and sugar) or "fruit drink".
It's not just the added sugar that's a problem. Whole fiber in whole fruit helps slow down the absorption of the natural sugar in fruit, which helps the body to absorb and use it better. When it's turned into juice, that fiber is broken down before it gets in your body and you can't use it as efficiently.
Load More Replies...As with most foods, be aware of what you are buying and what it includes.
I think it's fine in moderation. The old-fashioned 6 ounce glass with breakfast is a lot less than some people drink, though.
It's pretty easy to avoid fruit juices with added sugars, just read the label. The crux of fruit juices is many fruit juices without added sugars are a combination of fruit juices, particularly with added apples juice which is extremely high sugars (mainly fructose, glucose, and sucrose).
Go to Goodwill or the local equivalent and buy a second-hand juicer, mine cost $10.
Mostly empty calories. Better eat the fruit and vegetables, for fibers and satiety.
Load More Replies...Kinda, but also kinda not. 100% fruit juice is still full of (natural) sugar, and doesn't have the fibre that the whole fruit contains. Best enjoyed in moderation.

In the early 1900s it was thought smoking could open the lungs, and early Tour De France racers would often smoke a pack of cigarettes during the race to enhance their performance. Of course, this never worked.
I remember during the 70's, watching the Montreal Canadiens on Hockey Night in Canada, and during a between periods interview, the players were smoking in the dressing room. I always thought, years later, how much better these guys would have played had they not smoked. Not unlike the other sports anywhere from the 20's to the 80's, when alcohol and smoking were part of the program>
Super Bowl I, Chiefs quarterback Lenny Dawson was smoking on the sidelines.

Jumping into CrossFit & other intense workouts if you're older or out of shape.
It's an endorphin rush & it's awesome to see your body start getting into shape so quickly. Combine those two, and it's difficult to not just push your limits every time you go in. However, that sort of intensity takes a toll on joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons that are unaccustomed to it. Eventually that wear & tear causes injury, which (among other things) makes any exercise at all more difficult.
Some folks can do those sort of intense workouts, but for anyone looking to get into exercise, it's best to just focus on establishing a sustainable routine. It might take longer, but if you can stick with that, then results will come & you'll be more likely to keep your positive gains.
Exercise is like a lot of things, if you want to act like a pro, you have to train like a pro and that starts slowly and progresses while your body gets acclimatized to the new work ethic.
FFS, jumping into any workout routine if out of shape is an injury trap. Common sense, ease into it.
I'm older and out of shape. I started crossfit for myself. There is no way I can push myself to extreme, but I can do better than I did last time. Instructors help me. My box mates help me.
I never understood how exercises make people happy. The only reward I ever get is even more stress. Being sore after doesn't help either. And having to force myself to complete those boring routines makes me miserable every time. How people can be happy doin exercise is an unsolved mystery for me. I hate it
Exercise isn't just a gym session that involves a boring routine.

Sorry but I'm not gonna surround myself with parody humans who'd gleefuly cheer if my best friend died.
Wow....so those are the only options huh? If someone isn't agreeing with everything reverberating around your echo chamber....than they're "cheering someone's death" What a reasonable, measured and mature outlook.

Reasonable people don't get hung up on difference of opinions. It's when those people start demanding that you conform to, validate and praise their opinion less they insult, bully, manipulate and vilify you as their "opinion" is the only moral one to have.

Vitamin Water. Coca-Cola won a lawsuit claiming the branding was misleading. Their argument, iirc, was that they're Coca-Cola; nobody should expect things they make to be healthy, and it isn't their fault people are stupid.
In 2009, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) and private law firms filed a lawsuit against Coca-Cola alleging false advertising of Vitaminwater. The lawsuit claimed that Vitaminwater labels made misleading health claims, despite the drinks containing 33 grams of sugar and little juice. The settlement, approved in March 2016, required Coca-Cola to: Change labels: Add "with sweeteners" and calorie counts prominently. Stop claims: Discontinue phrases like "vitamins + water = all you need" and claims about eye disease risk. Cover costs: Pay $1.2 million for plaintiffs' attorneys' fees.
NO, just no.................there is no way I could make a comment on this, it would take me a month to begin to try to summarize the total insanity of this judgment.
Why on earth are you being downvoted multiple times? Does Coca Cola lurk these boards?

Trying to do a calorie deficit but just eat minimal amount to survive .
Your body goes to fasting mode and it'll actually prevent you from losing weight
this is true. I'm overweight, but I rarely eat enough calories. I really need to figure it out.
Load More Replies...One dietitian once told me, eat healty, and the amount of calories that fits a person with your level of activity, but who weighs ten kilos less. That way you don't starve your body, but lure it into burning some fats, while you still get a decent amount of nourishment to keep your body healthy AND have enough energy and fun in life to keep it up. Don't go lower than 10 kilos and keep using your wits.
My Dr at the VA had me trying to get 1200 calories a day. Um that's starvation. Did a biometric scan and 1699 calories for my age is the appropriate amount of calories.
1200 is starvation? D**n..I have to fight to get there
Load More Replies...I was never a big eater - many small meals through the day was my preferred eating habit. And while I was never skinny, I wasn't in bad shape. However, with the chronic nausea I have from my migraine, I'm pretty much on a starvation diet. That combined with my hypothyroidism means my metabolism is ruined. I actually lost quite a bit of weight about 10 years ago and was doing well, but ever since I moved I've gained it back - I'm in a place where I can't work out at home and it's gotten so hard for me to leave home.
I don’t know your situation, but can you at least jog in place? You can do burpees too.
Load More Replies...Our bodies evolved to keep as many calories as possible against famine - if you reduce hour food intake, you body will become more efficient at keeping the calories you are getting
New research throws doubt on this as being too simplified. Our bodies normally do NOT just store calories, because being 30kg overweight is bad for people who are hunters/gatherers and walk a lot. But we are being told these "simple truths" so often that they get hardly questioned anymore.
Load More Replies...It's not just calories intake - it's also what else is (or isn't) in the food. I'd recommend looking up / reading the book of / watching the videos of Dr Chris van Tulleken regarding ultra processed food. In his book he also questions more of these "simple truths" (like "everyone got fat because we're lazy" - actually it started across the world in all kinds of groups at more or less the same time - do you really believe people in the 1970s suddenly lost all willpower?)
But if you eat a healthy amount, it takes ages - all the while you're fair game for every s**t who wants to prop up their ego by insulting and belittling you. So maybe we should first create a surrounding where overweight people are given the time - and medical help - needed to lose weight healthily.
Pushing your body and overtraining. You can get serious injuries.
I know someone who was morbidly obese. She sought help from her doctor who told her to begin exercising for literally one minute or less and slowly add. A little over a year later she is down almost 100 pounds and did it with teeny tiny baby steps. I dread to think of what could have happened to her had she taken friends advice who told her to do things such as running on treadmill for 30 minutes to START. She did it the right way with no injuries and no starvation.
May I ask what exercises she did in the beginning? I am morbidly obese, and when I google what exercises I could do I only find stupid stuff like squats. You can't do those if you are obese, that's the best way to k**l your knees.

Too little or not enough of many things. Extreme cutting for extended periods of time or very specific diets have side effects usually.
Unregulated words on food packages. Natural or non-processed have no actual meaning when it comes to health. The same with Fresh. You still have to wisely select foods as those words can be easily slapped on unhealthy food.
Exercise even. There is a reason why they suggest consulting with your doctor before doing vigorous exercise. Doing the same exercise over and over can be bad for you even. My dad lost 90 lbs, then one day passed out on a treadmill, hit his head and died. That doesn’t mean I don’t think people should exercise. Just that you have to be careful. .
ONLY IF you can afford it. Otherwise you have to eat what you can, and sadly junk food is cheaper

“Drinking lemon water every morning doesn’t detox anything — your liver already does that.”.
But drinking lemon water every day is good if you're prone to kidney stones.

It's not inherently bad for you, so why complain if someone does it?
Taking a bunch of random supplements.
You're supposed to consult your doctor, gets some tests done and determine which supplements you need if you're not getting them from your regular diet. Some health conditions might be naturally depleting you of nutrients and a supplement can help with that. For example, the skin condition I was born with is caused by a deficiency in iron rooted in my DNA. (It can get difficult to explain.) Taking iron pills prevents things like anemia and helps improve the condition of how my skin regenerates and sheds, and the health of my nails and hair. But if I were to take vitamin C, that I already get enough of from all he fruits I love to eat, that can cause health problems later in the life.
This is correct. A lab draw will tell you a deficiency otherwise a normal diet and maybe one multivitamin is sufficient.
Load More Replies...And specifically multi-vitamins. They have too much of some things and not enough of others and our bodies are not one-size-fits-all. Those combo pills never have the right balance for anyone. Better to find out what YOUR body is short on and supplement only those specific nutrients.
Wine.
My dad heard 2 drinks a day is healthy. So he was at his cardiologist and they asked how much he drinks a week and he said 14 drinks. The cardiologist was flabbergasted and told him to cut out drinking.
I think the media are largely to blame for this. I routinely read in newspapers etc one minute a glass of wine a day is bad for you, the next minute a glass of wine is good for you. Too much conflicting information.
My cardiologist told me to limit drinking to 5 drinks per MONTH due to high triglycerides. I figured out that on the last day of the month, at around 10pm I can have 5 beers, then after midnight, I can have 5 more
If alcohol takes years off your life, at least it takes them off at the right end.
Hardly "flabbergasted" I'm sure. That much is not particularly high, as far as a cardiologist's experience goes. Guide line have changed many times over the years, and vary across the world, but the amounts quoted these days are intended as 'maximum' amounts, not recommended. (I still drink more than that though).
This comes from how the media portrays scientific research. A study showed that red wine has some anti-inflammatory properties. However, the benefits are negated by the alcohol's ill effects. The media just talked about the benefits and ignored the other part.
The only 100% safe amount of alcohol is zero. I'd say most of those "alcohol is good for you" theories are made up either by people who need to justify their excessive drinking, or those who profit from alcohol sales.
There's actually a scientific explanation: people that are addicted or have other pre-existing health conditions are more likely to say that they drink 0 alcohol. So if you investigate the correlation between health and alcohol use, you'll find that people that say they drink little are healthier, as a group, than those who don't drink at all.

Used to not think this, but self medicating with weed while having certain mental illnesses. The way my therapist and psych both explained it was they didn’t care if I used, however they would advise me not to self medicate with it. It’s harder to know what dosage youre consuming and there’s so many different strands. Medication works best when it’s taken consistently at the same time and same amount everyday, and it’s near impossible for that to be the case with weed, even if bought from dispensaries. Dont get me wrong though, I think weed is extremely helpful for certain disorders and diseases, and it should be 100% legal, however it should just be used with caution when dealing with mental illnesses!
I was on jury duty once for a case of attempted murder. Poor guy had bipolar disorder since he was a teenager, his father had it too. He knew about it, he was getting treatment for it but one day he started to feel off, he wrote an email to his doctor asking if he could increase the dosage. When that didn't help he went to the hospital THREE TIMES asking to get admitted, but they sent him away. So he started smoking weed in an attempt to self medicate. What he did not know was that the weed interfered with his medication, so one day slid into a psychosis. He saw a random woman on the street and a voice told him she was the devil and he needed to k**l her. A witness said that he kicked her head like a soccer ball. The victim miraculously survived with minor injuries. Poor guy actually did everything right but he just had such bad luck. He looked absolutely miserable during the trial, I felt so bad for him I could barely look at him.

Not sure why you're associating this with exercise. I mean, yeah, exercise is good, but if you're obese then just losing the weight on its own is worthwhile.

Thinking about what other people are thinking about and then also concluding that you are right about the fact that they have thought what you thought they had thought based on a loose theory that only works if described by yourself.
Reminds me of a former "friend" who seemed to decide what other people's lives were all about, tell them about it, and if they tell her it's not true, they're in denial. She also got angry when confronted about issues, was very vindictive, and turned out to be very mentally and emotionally dangerous in general.

Its such a misconception that "it gives you strong bones" Yes, it has calcium in it but the amount you would have to drink daily to actually absorb enough "calcium" you need would be sooo much lol we need calcium and its in other foods but a good ol American dinner with a glass of milk growing up wont do much other than give you unnecessary mucus.
Yes, this is a myth. Milk does not stimulate mucus production.
Load More Replies...It's not supposed to be your only source of calcium (or protein, which it also has). Like every other food, it should be part of a varied, balanced diet. If it gives you mucus, then you consume something else; there are plenty of good foods. That doesn't make milk unhealthy.
This isn't saying that it's bad, but it was, for decades, heavily marketed as a source of calcium for healthy bones, and not just recently.

Milk was heavily pushed on is in the 90s. I still wonder if cheese actually prevents cavities. But I drank a lot of milk when I was young, never broke a bone, but I do have bone alignment problems.
I remember in the 90's, yes in the last century a very long time ago, when they came up with a report the milk was dangerous because it contained carcinogens, but then when it was discovered (?) that almost everything we consume has carcinogens, and milk has a few but not enough to hurt us unless we consume several gallons a day, then it was not a problem. This is where the anti-vaxers started their movement.
