Good design makes our life easier. That’s why it’s important for the creators to try and imagine themselves in other people’s shoes when sketching things for their use. Whether it’s a playground or an office building, those responsible for the design have to consider the needs of different groups of people, for instance, those with disabilities, seniors, or children, just to name a few; and that might not be easy. However, some people excel at the task and provide exemplary results.

Today we have gathered some of the best examples of design that alleviates life with and for children. Whether it’s something that helps parents to handle their little ones, or solutions that aid the kids themselves, these people knew exactly what would come in handy for one of the two groups. Their ingenious designs cover everything from tiny doors to playtime areas at the dentist’s, and much more. Scroll down to find their concepts.

In order to better understand what makes a good design and what effect it can have on people, Bored Panda reached out to the architectural psychologist and professor in the School of Architecture at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, Dak Kopec. He was kind enough to share some of his thoughts, which you will find in the text below.

Or just use the old fashioned design where it's one long log. You learn a lot about physics trying to work out where to sit based on differences in weight

I remember we had this kind of seesaw on a playground near my house, and I was so proud to figure out that I can play with my sister, I only need to sit closer to the middle. The physics class that explained it was 5 years later and it made me feel like a genius :D

EDIT: See my comment below under Jason Boyd. It looks like a mix of American SL and Australian SL. Maybe from some other country? Unsure. =-== That's not the sign for peace but the use is wide spread enough deaf people would likely know what you meant. And bottom middle is I Love You not love but close enough as it is often used casually rather than just in a romantic way. Okay, I'm done kibitzing. I do like the attempt at inclusion.

To clarify: Play, friend, and help are all American Sign Language. That is not the sign for love. It’s the acronym ILY which stands for “I love you”. It’s a combination of the fingerspelled letters I, L, and Y. As for peace, that’s just a peace sign, not the actual sign ASL has for peace. I haven’t found a connection between the two but maybe I’m wrong and it does have a basis in sign language? This is where I got my info btw: http://www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-signs/l/love.htm ———https://www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-signs/s/serenity.htm ——— http://www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-signs/i/ily.htm ——— I’ve been taking an ASL class for about two years now and this is most definitely my favorite website to find info and signs.

There’s a park somewhere nearby me that has the whole alphabet in sign language on a structure. I tried to teach myself, but had a hard time because of the angles of the hands. For some reason I couldn’t get it until I took ASL

The “rock and roll” sign” doesn’t look like that. The thumb is tucked in and holding down the two middle fingers. The thumb out means “I love you.”

It’s not easy to find a universal definition of what good design is. It’s a complex matter that involves creativity, anticipating and understanding the end-user’s needs, and so much more. Yet, oftentimes, people recognize a good design when they see one intuitively.

That is because such design is typically expected to tick two main boxes—functionality and aesthetics. An item has to serve a purpose, however, it has to be visually appealing as well, which is why it’s important to find that middle ground. When the designer reaches this goal, it automatically positively reflects in the user’s experience.

A set of requirements for what a good design should be was presented by Dieter Rams, a renowned German designer who spent decades working with the consumer products company Braun and the furniture company Vitsœ.

Back in the late 1970s, he asked himself the question “is my design good design?” and came up with 10 principles for good design that are equally relevant to this day. The first thing he emphasized was that it has to be innovative. The constant technological advancements provide an abundance of opportunities for innovation, which is why it’s important to try and keep up.

Aarrrhhhhgggg we are not wheelchair bound! I am not bound to my wheelchair, I am a wheelchair user. I'm not bound to it 24/7 like a prisoner! I am a full time wheelchair user you can also get ambulatory users too. Please can we stop using the term 'bound'! On a lighter note, these should be in every play area. Many (in the Uk at least) are locked and people get upset when they see this, but the key is the radar key that unlock disabled toilets, so every disabled person should have one (you can easily buy them for £2-3) and it stops them being abused by people who don't need to use it.

Second on the list was usefulness, which is what you get after combining functionality with certain psychological functions and aesthetics. Rams suggested that good design accentuates the usefulness of a product by relinquishing anything that does not serve its purpose.

He continued to emphasize the importance of aesthetics itself, as well as noting that good design makes a product understandable. In addition to that, it has to be unobtrusive, as functional products are not decorative objects, nor works of art, which is why they should be quite neutral.

I bought a desk pedal for my classroom! I work in Exceptional Ed. And let me tell you. Teaching my students how to move their bodies without disrupting instruction and to regulate their emotions has resulted in my class having the least number of crises and physical outbursts. Not only that, but the kids LOVE being in my room.

that's just beautiful! I would really love to have those lol. The amount of times I've loudly banged my knee against the bottom of a desk is a lot. With my foot surgeries, I've gotten used to crossing my legs to help with the pain (not there anymore) and in some older desks that are smaller, I'll bang my knees just crossing them. Having another way to put out my energy besides rubbing my fingers sounds amazing. I've started to develop a callous on my right pointer finger, on the side where my knuckle is, which is where I rub it. It also doesn't feel right to rub my left hand either. I've also developed the habit of popping my knuckles, so on bad days I get sore joints. It all manifests from my anxiety, so having another way to output that so I can focus sounds amazing. I really want to be a teacher, especially with special education kids. (that's what they're called here). What's it like?

The rest of the ten principles pointed out that good design should be honest and long-lasting. It should also be thorough down to the last detail and environmentally-friendly. Last but not least, according to Dieter Rams, good design is as little design as possible, which relies on his approach of “less, but better”.

These things are expensive. Siemens sells them for €1800. Then again peanuts compared to the real thing. Still they are always lost and you can never buy replacements (can only add them with a new machine order).

If claustrophobia is a issue for you, some places have wide bore or open bore machines that make the process much more comfortable to endure. Not every place has them, unfortunately, but they are becoming a more widely used alternative.

Any design depends largely on the end user. It’s important to take into account their needs, in addition to weighing numerous other factors, such as their environment, for instance. Architectural psychologist, Prof. Dak Kopec told Bored Panda that an in-depth interview process and surrounding community analysis is the best way to anticipate design decisions that can benefit certain groups of people the most.

“A good designer will be able to assess a group of end-users’ needs through asking strategic questions, observing the intended end-users in similar environments, and studying the regional cultural nuances along with values, traditions, and norms,” he said.

Dr. Kopec pointed out that these factors are all regional—within a given city, county, or township—which is why, according to him, a good designer will not assume that a cluster of people will be the same in London, New York, Honolulu, Sydney, and elsewhere.

I’ve seen them in a few places but they’re usually broken, at least here in the UK. It’s one of thise things you don’t think abt before becoming a parent- how do you use a public toilet when you’re alone with baby? You can’t leave them on the gross floor and most cubicles won’t fit a pram. It’s really tricky, especially if you’re on your period! 😬

“Good design helps relieve stress and promote ideal behaviors or outcomes when it properly reflects the community it serves. The best thing is, it is located on the roof of a terminal and next to the airfield. So while the kids play, you can watch planes start, land and taxi.

Designing for children is no exception—as with any other group, it requires thorough research that helps to understand their needs better and provide solutions accordingly. In addition to being functional and aesthetically pleasing, good design can also positively influence children’s development.

There are lots of these and similar around. We have one where every page has a different kind of fastening. One is a zipper, one is a normal button, one is one of those buttons you press together, then a… click thingy and of course shoe laces

I couldn’t get it for a long time and I was embarrassed. Now I realize it’s because I’m left-handed and the way people were showing me wasn’t natural for me, especially at 4 or 5 and in the 1970’s when nobody ever considered that.

want to learn how to tie your shoes? It's a very easy thing to do Just sit on down and I'll give you the scoop What's that? It's called the loop de loop You gotta take a lace in each hand You go over and under again You make a loop de loop and pull And your shoes are looking cool You go over and back, left to right Loop de loop and you pull them tight Like bunny ears or a Christmas bow Lace them up and you're ready to go You make a loop de loop and pull And your shoes are looking cool You make the loop de loop and pull And your shoes are looking cool -ween

“Good design can influence and enhance a child's development,” Prof. Kopec said. “Loris Malaguzzi is the originator of the thought that all children have three teachers: their peers, adults, and the environment or classroom. Malaguzzi further believed that all children have curiosity, potential, and preparedness, which is echoed within Rachel and Stephen Kaplan’s preference module that states an environment should have four elements: coherence, legibility, complexity, mystery.

“Hence, each environment should allow for curiosity, potential, and preparedness through the inclusion of elements that allow for coherence, legibility, complexity, and mystery,” he explained.

The professor pointed out that some groups of people are more prone to be influenced by certain design decisions; children, seniors, or people with mental disabilities, for instance. “These are important populations because they tend to be the most influenced by environment design because of the embedded symbols that carry meaning,” he said.

“This is because vision is our (human) primary sensory detection, as such, what we see is what we respond to at a basic instinctual level. Educated adults often screen out or rationalize visual cues at a subconscious level or have a larger frame of reference from which to process visual information.”

Don't go putting bones in German playgrounds - our local one had to be closed for months while it was completely dug up for an investigation after bones were found because it was the near where some people were killed in 1939-1945. Thankfully it just turned out to be the old site of a butcher's shop many moons ago.

What about the width? It seems to be less of a problem here in the UK, but when I lived in the US, I was a double A width (very narrow). I could never buy cheap shoes off the rack (Target, Walmart, etc) because they were always wide and wouldn't stay on my feet. Having said that, now that I live in the UK, I can actually buy shoes off the rack without having to worry about what the width is, they all fit me correctly, which was a pleasant surprise.

Love the socks. Also when I worked at sears in the late 90s I had to measure people's feet on the metal contraptions. Amazing how many people do not know their shoe size.

The last time I heard the word cupboard, was when my grandma would say it. Haven't heard that word in so long and the memories from reading it are priceless for me. I had forgotten about that till just now. Cupboard Renaissance please.

What words do you use instead? Where do you live? Sorry if that sounds accusatory or something, just meant to be curiosity. We use the word cupboard all the time in Australia, it's quite mundane, so I'm wondering where it has slipped out of usage.

I drew half a face in each of my son's shoes so when you put them together correctly, he sees the face. Can also do it by cutting a sticker in half. I recently noticed his new shoes have half a rainbow in each which also has the same effect

A useful tip is to get a sticker and cut it in half. Put the left half of the sticker in the left shoe, and the right half in the right shoe. When the shoes are brought together the picture is completed.

Actually, this is mandatory with doors that open and close automatically. (At least in german public buildings, where children have access. "Shearing points at the secondary closing edges of doors are to be avoided." Accordingly, all doors to which children have access must be secured. Not only the electrical ones. Others, I don't know. ).

OK, this is great, but does anyone remember having amazing playplaces for the kids? When I was little it was slides and a tower, and some "merry-go-round" that you sat in, shaped like a giant burger, but you turned the disk in the middle to gain speed, and everyone just got too dizzy to do it anymore? Then they replaced it with the plastic tubes you crawl through that had a slide and a ballpit?

Oh, how I miss the fun Maccas! I remember when I was a youngster and we had our monthly treat visit to maccas. Our local had an area with a statue of Ronald and Grimace and the chairs were characters' heads and there was cool artwork on the walls. It was a magical land just for kids and so much fun! Now the restaurants are all so 'modern' and boring. They all look the same and it's boring. I wish my kids could experience the joy and excitement I felt back then, when I take them for their monthly treat.

Uh, I remember those. NEVER wear the shortest pants, NEVER slide in something that doesn't cover your butt and at least a handwidth of leg. Butt cheeks protude, in relation to legs, a bit, and may get stuck in SOME of those roller slides. I had that happen when I was like 6 or 7, and although it didn't do much harm, it hurt.

Body memory of rollers bump-bumping on my butt. Except I've never been on a slide like that. It was for boxes / cargo. Low key bothering me that I can vividly remember the body sensation but can't remember the where/why. (though the why was me goofing I'm sure)

i am in the conveyor business and can support this comment 100%. i've had to sit on them even when they're not rolling to work on them and even putting a piece of cardboard under your butt does not help. that being said, i've graduated from working on conveyors to buying and selling them and it's a lot more comfortable :)

I don't know if this was the reason for this slide, but rollar slides in newer, inclusively-designed parks actually have several important advantages over a plastic slide (although those parks often have both.) The main benefit is the plastic slides can generate enough of a static charge to disable hearing aids, cochlear implants, and other vital medical wearable devices. The rollers on these these slides dissipate the charge and make them safe for all children. There are other reasons too that I can't recall

The media potrays sharks as scary and mean, and dolphins as friendly, but its the oppisite. Dolphins will do bad things to you, and sharks only go after you on a rare occasion.

To stop other children running past and getting hit. When these first started popping up in Melbourne you often had to show your carer's card before your child could access them too, otherwise the gate was locked. Not done now, as they realised that they needed to be more accessible, but it means anyone can jump on, and often they do, despite people who actually need them waiting.

I mean it's cool and everything, but why do kids have to be entertained 24/7? Bar any ADHD or other issues, learning to sit still for 10 minutes with their thoughts or a book is an art form that will serve them well, particularly when they start school!

Since you’re at a dental office, it could also be to distract the kids from being afraid.

Yes it is because there's a movement away from the "Helicopter parenting" of the last 2 decades. People were freaking out and calling the police reporting neglect when they saw kids playing at parks or walking around town unsupervised. Parents started making up cards like this so their children could show them to adults who tried to step in. Sometimes they say "I'm a free range child."

I love the 1/4 information, I had no idea what "5 to" meant when I was a little kid. Thankfully it's becoming less common in the United States to say "20 after" rather than 8:20 due to the sheer number of accurate clocks available.

I always try to tell the kids I teach both quarter to 1 as well as 12.45, for example, so they can understand the wording. Or when I say 5 to, I also say 5 minutes until.

Most public toilets have them. When I was travelling in Japan with my 1-year-old, it was incredibly child-friendly in so many ways (although accessibility to their subway platforms could do with being improved in places). The department stores are fantastic (especially when a typhoon rolls up) - the baby feeding "stations", the "tantrum aunties" (staff that help to distract the little one while the parent is busy looking for something/making a purchase/trying something on), staff pointing out where the changing facilities and children's bathrooms were when we entered the store, just in case we needed them ... It was amazing.

Are lots of kids going to the dentist alone these days? I understand small doors for kids to open themselves, like in a school bathroom, but when adults are preaent?

I had a pair that were shaped like a giraffe! Didn't really use them though, as I learned how to use chopsticks when I was 8, before I got them :)

We have these with little pandas on the top to hold the chopsticks together :) Then you can remove the panda at the top so they just have the finger loops, then remove the loops for normal children's chopsticks as they get better at using them.

While that’s probably true for a lot of these, this one seems far too low for that. Wheelchair sinks are usually slightly lower than normal ones and stick out farther.

From OP “ the pool had failed in many ways and it was fill it in or make it “the pit” as my kids call it. So my grandfather opted for the carpeted slide/dodgeball pit. It’s a monstrosity but my kids sure love it.”

Not a good idea, so many parents will end up with crying kids because they are not budgeting to buy that much junk foods and others will overload their kids on sugar.

Surprisingly, kids here generally don’t throw a tantrum over the kid food aisle. Usually the kids have a few coins that they can use for snacks of their choice. Most kids learn tasks like this from a young age in Japan. I went with my preschool kids on a field trip to the local corner store and they got to pick out what they wanted and paid for it themselves. Then we had a little picnic by the river to enjoy our snacks together.

Yeah. Great marketing for the store but HORRIBLE for the parents winding up having to foot the bill for all the candy their kids dumped into their baskets."Baskets in the candy section". They knew what they were doing. SMH
