Last year, a video went viral featuring a performer named Michael 'Chili Dawg' Castleberry showcasing his unique guitar skill—using a beer bottle as a slide. The caption read, "The European mind cannot comprehend this." People quickly began attaching the phrase to other things that they believed were foreign to the Old Continent, and thus, a new meme was born.

Now, Europeans and their allies from around the world are playfully flipping the script to get back at Uncle Sam — "The American mind cannot comprehend this" pictures are meant to single out what the United States is lacking.

My mom realized her passport expired... in the airport. They gave her an extention until she returned to our country. Took them 40 minutes.

Fewer citizens and less risk of passport fraud …. Also possibly an anomaly. This has nothing to do with Americans.

Not "Americans", but the US system. I'm a US/EU dual citizen, and government offices in the America are extremely slow and bureaucratic. The number of citizens is irrelevant; what truly matters is the number of offices per capita and the system's overall efficiency. Sorry, but the "oh, America is so huuuge" excuse doesn’t work for every problem. The real issue lies in priorities.

My DIL is German and had no plans on going back but had to a couple of mos ago when her mother and aunt died a week apart. My son took her to Atlanta to get a new passport but she doesn't have any ID with her married name even after 10 years except for the marriage license. Atlanta said they could take their copy to Germany to get a new passport with her married name, Germany says no, it has to be a notarized copy. He called me & I had to call my boss to tell her I need to leave to drive 3 hours to go to the courthouse where they live for the notarized copy then send it by FedEx that was almost $100. They had to finish the process of getting her grandparents into the same nursing home that her mother and aunt had started and clean out 2 apartments. They were gone for a month and sent me some incredible pics. They got a new passport there with her maiden name now they have to go back to Atlanta to get one with her married name.

"Culture encompasses religion, food, what we wear, how we wear it, our language, marriage, music, what we believe is right or wrong, how we sit at the table, how we greet visitors, how we behave with loved ones, and a million other things," said Cristina De Rossi, an anthropologist at Barnet and Southgate College in London.

The United States is the third largest country in the world, with one of the most diverse topographies and climates of any region.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, it has a population of 337 million, a child is born every 8 seconds, and a person dies every 10 seconds.

You think that's clean? Go ride the Moscow Metro. And while you are there, check out the various statues and stunning architecture that adorns every station. My Russian-born wife insisted that when we arrived to New York City, we take the, "famous New York subway" from the airport, despite my warnings. I can tell you that she insisted on a taxi on the return trip. I say this as someone staunchly opposed to the Russian government.

Just so beautiful, the nicest people, and speak English (which is nice). As much as the far right bleats about Norse blood they could never handle the level of socialism and over all anti-Putin attitude of modern Norway.

Because of this, the United States is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world. You could argue that nearly every region of the world has, in some way, influenced American culture, but most notably it was the English who colonized the lands in the early 1600s.

The United States is sometimes described as a "melting pot", in which different cultures have formed their own distinct "flavors" of American culture.

But the way people "melt" in the United States differs. "Different groups of immigrants integrate in different ways," De Rossi said. "For example, ... Catholic Spanish-speaking communities might keep their language and other cultural family traditions, but are integrated [into] the urban community and have embraced the American way of life in many other ways."

But we would like to...except, of course, for when we want/need something from a business that's close for the "summer holiday", however long that is. "Where I work should be closed for a few weeks/months, but I need all other businesses to be open for my convenience." How does that work, anyway? I mean, surely you can't close all of the grocery stores/markets for a week at the same time... I would think any business that can close for an extended period of time can't be any kind of necessity to society.

It's called planning. You plan ahead for all the stuff one might need during this time. And you're usually informed quite in advance about their holidays. Also it's not for grocery stores, but more like small/independently owned shops, barbers or the like.

This is an art gallery. They can close longer and I don't think anyone would be clamoring for it to open. Some businesses can do this but not all. Show me a hospital or a restaurant or a grocery store that has this sign in Europe, Asia, South America, anywhere, then this American mind cannot indeed comprehend.

Whole bunch of things like this make buying anything a PITA in europe. No, ALL your employees do not need to take a vacation at the same time. Rotating vacation isn't a difficult thing. Add to that the number of stores who think it's acceptable to stock shelves during not only business hours, but PEAK business hours. "Oh yes we know the aisle are BARELY big enough for two carts to pass each other, but we're going to park PALLETS of inventory in every single aisle! Sure it's going to make it worse to get around the store, but at least it's also going to obstruct 40% of the inventory on the shelves"

Well let’s look at my daily drive: why I don’t ride a bike to work or go grocery shopping: It is 36 miles one way to my work place, 72 miles round trip. My grocery store is 31 miles away so 62 miles round trip. Usually stop on way home from work. My church is 10 miles away 20 miles round trip. A bike would not work for me. Even our cities make it hard to bike. Use New Orleans a person can live on the West Bank of Mississippi but works on East Bank in the CBD. Yes they can ride a bike to the ferryboat but limited number of them plus on foggy days they shut down. Some city have tons of bikes. New Orleans has tons of bikes.

I THINK they mean a shoulder? My new hometown doesn't build shoulders and I HATE that about it. I wrote on BP one time, "What's all this gaslighting about America not having sidewalks? I've never been anywhere that didn't have sidewalks on any well-traveled roads." Well, we don't have sidewalks either. You have to either place incredible, unearned trust in drivers or walk facing traffic and step into the drainage system (which is incredible!) when oncoming traffic appears. The main road by me is two lanes, no sidewalk, no shoulders, not nearly enough guardrails and steep dropoffs. I can't imagine getting old and living here, for fear of rolling my car down the hill every other week.

Many holidays are celebrated just in the United States. For example, Americans commemorate their independence from Britain on July 4; Memorial Day, held on the last Monday in May, honors those who have died in military service; Labor Day, which comes on the first Monday in September, celebrates the country's workforce; Thanksgiving, another distinctive American holiday, falls on the fourth Thursday in November and dates back to colonial times to celebrate the harvest.

Functional democracies (i.e. NOT yankland) can have elections, count the vote and RECOUNT it a second time in the span of a week, unlike yanks who demand final results within 20 minutes of polls closing but don't inaugurate new governments for tow months. But for once, that two month delay is a good think, preventing Cheetolini aka Trumplethinskin from taking over immediately.

While these memes poke fun at some aspects of American culture, it's important to remember that its image isn't all bad, far from it. According to a survey of 16 advanced countries, including Canada, France, Germany, Australia, Japan, and others, the most positive elements of America's image are tied to some of its most famous exports, with the U.S. receiving considerable praise for its technology. When asked to compare American technological innovations with those of other developed nations, respondents gave favorable reviews of the home of Silicon Valley. Across the 16, a median of 72% say U.S. technology is the best or above average. The US, home to Hollywood, also received high marks for its entertainment, such as movies, music, and television — a median of 71% think American entertainment is the best or above average.

Again the only thing I can't comprehend is why you think we...what? Don't sit outside? Hang out in any city and you'll see older people especially who congregate in their chairs outside their apartment buildings as part of their day every day routine. And guys who sit on stoops together. People watching is a regular thing. We also have a lot of rooftop areas people sit and talk at overlooking the city. And parks with rows and rows of benches that are often filled with people. Tons of restaurants that have outdoor seating.

You mean, the city with the most European "vibe" in the US? The city that has been "molded politically, socially, and physically" by Spanish culture? The city that grew around European communities formed by immigrants during the Gold Rush? The city that was redesigned from scratch after the fire by copying the Parisienne "Haussmann model" of large boulevards and construction blocks? The city that preserved its European-style tramway system, the city that shaped its architecture around Victorian, Edwardian, and Mediterranean models? That specific city?

So Americans can't comprehend that some foreigner believes all the "best neighborhoods" are courtyard block neighborhoods? lol, okay. Believe what you want I guess? All of that "studying" on google maps must make them feel important.

Older Americans (like me) still recall the early days of ESPN, when they couldn't afford to show major American sports so they showed Australian Rules Football, back when the referees still wore the sharp white suit and tie. Nowadays, American fans are familiar with the many Australian athletes who now play American football, especially the position of punter; Australians have earned many scholarships to play college football, and they dominate the position of punter.

When I flew Ryanair from Edinburgh to Stansted airport, the flight attendant sold me a train ticket to get from Stansted to downtown London. I got to the train at Stansted and the conductor said the ticket was no longer accepted as of a year before, but Ryanair keeps selling them anyway.

Locking up general items only happens in incredibly bad areas although it's true that certain things are commonly locked up for theft in most places now. Spray paint, perfume and higher ticket items are becoming more commonly locked up because they're small and easy to steal. Also, keep in mind some items are locked up not for fear of theft but for safety. Some otc medicines, formula, cigarettes... they're locked up so no one can open them, put anything in them, etc. Can you imagine your baby dying because some psycho put cocaine or cyanide in the formula and you didn't realize the seal had been tampered with? The Chicago Tylenol murders were a long time ago but it's an interesting read and makes you worry about all the items people *can* tamper with before you get them home and ingest them: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_Tylenol_murders

Do Euros think that every time we drink beer, we have a keg and red solo cups? That's for like a wedding or a teen party mainly lol. Yes, having bottles or cans of low ABV lager is pretty much what 67% of the population is doing on football Sundays.

Those beans are called "gaštany" in Slovakia and in this case purée is made out of them. It doesn't taste like beans at all. It's sweet and delicious. Only the consistency is similar to mushed beans.

Grab a glass or cup from the cabinet, go to the sink turn on the faucet wait for the water to get cold enough and fill glass. We all did it before we had filtered water on our fridges or bottled water.

i mean... we can drink the water but Americans are untrusting that it's safe because so many places have found out well after the fact that their water *wasn't* safe. Flint, Detroit, etc. But, it's usually perfectly safe. We just prefer bottled or filtered to drink. But we tend to cook with tap water and we shower in it. Brush our teeth, etc.

WTF is this nonsense? If you hear or see emergency vehicles running their lights and sirens you are LEGALLY OBLIGATED to pull over and let them pass. Doesn't matter how "clear" the lanes are. And while Romania has the same law, very few people seem to grasp its purpose let alone abide by it.

    Bored Seagull
    Community Member

This is not about the obligation to let emergency vehicles pass, this is about the obligation to create a free lane for emergency vehicles when traffic comes to a halt in a traffic jam, even if there aren't any emergency vehicles approaching.

American's pull over for all emergency vehicles and we even have a fire/breakdown lane on just about every road/highway. it's illegal to drive in it *although some jerks use it to pass sometimes). You can get in serious trouble for not pulling over for emergency vehicles so I'm not sure what you mean with this post.
