People Are Sharing Terrible Work Experiences That They Wish Were Just Jokes (30 Tweets)
Who you work with is just as important as your actual job when it comes to performing well. After all, a supportive, nurturing environment that empowers you to do your best will yield very different results from a toxic atmosphere where you constantly feel anxious, undervalued, and unappreciated.
The Cleveland chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America asked people to share their work stories from hell that they wish were jokes but, unfortunately, aren’t. Their thread on Twitter has shown the appalling work conditions and horrible managers some Americans have to deal with. You’ll find their stories below. Read on, upvote the stories that resonated the most with you, and share your own nightmare job experiences in the comment section at the very bottom of the article.
Dr. Vaneeta Sandhu, a workplace psychology expert and the head of emotional fitness at Coa, told Bored Panda what we can all do as managers and employees to be more self-aware of our flaws and fix them without triggering our inner defense mechanism. Read on for what she had to say.

In France, not reporting child abuse is an offense punishable by three years in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros.
And it should be like that everywhere. There ARE people in the use that are mandatory reporters. They can get into serious trouble for not reporting suspected abuse. Teachers, library staff, any hospital employee, day care providers - it's a fairly long list.
Load More Replies...On the other hand I reported the abuse of my best friend who showed up to school with bruises from beatings almost every day. Child protective services responded by calling the parents, told them I was the one who reported them, and asked do they beat their kid and they said no. Hung up, and beat him worse than he'd ever been beaten before. Protective services did nothing further and my friend never spoke to me again.
So they called the parents instead of actually going to the house? That just sounds like a lazy social worker.

Not probably, I am sure he/she would do that.
Load More Replies...Same thing happened to my mom who is a teacher. The girl said something about being sexually abused and the director of the private school tried to talk her out of reporting it. My mom disregarded him and did the right thing.
I think you should write Reporting before child because what you have written means abusing children is everybody's business

I had a drug store manager do this, when I was a new hire there as a teen. I was on one of three registers, and we had been trained to count the money before leaving our register. Well, a manager pulled me off the register saying he had something else for me to do, and wouldn't allow me to count the money. Later, I was questioned about the shortage -with implications that I had stolen some. But I was cleared when they realized that the manager wouldn't let me count it, and apparently it had happened before with him.
We had a manager who would chew you out if you made a mistake on the till, not giving enough change, (some staff she would force to watch the CCTV of them serving the customer), she later got caught stealing when she was doing pick ups on the tills in another store.
This reminds me of how in murder mysteries, often the most vehement accuser is the murder (although obviously, in this case nobody murdered anyone)
I assume the school is going to supply me with a husband whose salary my income can supplement then?
Her colleague a time traveler from the 1800s? Back in the 19th century, a committee against prostitution was outraged when social reformers suggested paying women better so that they wouldn't have to sell themselves to make ends meet. Male factory workers could just about survive on their salary. A woman's salary was much lower.
I work a similar field, but non-profit. It is a salary that only works well for supplement for a higher wage job, so it make sense for me, but I am a minority when it comes to that. Everyone else struggles and have to be on state funding. We are now "essential" workers. Yet financially we don't feel essential. We are a step below US teachers pay-wise and respect-wise. So that is pretty low. Makes the $50k a starting teacher may get be a dream and that was my highest pay as management in my field.
This might have been true in the past (at least in Canada) but that would be before WWII.
That is awful. I teach and it is not supplemental of anything. Strong union here, though.
Teachers actually have to have a college education. Someone off the street can’t just apply to be a teacher so what the heck
According to Dr. Sandhu, it’s vital that we all understand that everyone can get defensive depending on the type of negative feedback we get related to our work.
“When the feedback threatens the way that we perceive ourselves, we naturally want to defend it. If you want to see yourself as a competent teammate and the negative feedback you received challenges this, it makes sense that you may feel yourself getting defensive!” she said, pointing out that if we want to criticize our bosses or employees, we need to do it diplomatically.
That's when you find out who your best friend REALLY is. If they won't help you hide a body, then they aren't your bestie.

Before I get downvoted for sharing some reason why management is heartless, I'll add I see both sides and there is no black and white. Obviously kidney failure/hospital is no reason for reprimand. Now...onward. I have done management and I can say it has been difficult when you have a huge amount of employees who are constantly out for some reason and you have to get them covered (legally can't run low staffed) Some take advantage (and sometimes you know sometimes don't and can't be a gullible pushover) and after several times with different reasons it gets to the point management has to do something because they can't run as a business. I have worked with some great staff but they had illnesses and it was hard because they just needed to work in a job they liked, and have that financial and insurance support, but the position needed reliability. This is more typical at service jobs than office work jobs.
Thank you. I feel like a broken record when I try to point out that we can't possibly have the whole story from the headline. There's always the other side of the story. Taco Bell is a nationwide chain with policies that have been approved by lawyers specializing in labor laws. Getting fired for a single no-show sounds awfully sus to me.

I can hear all the "women make less than men is a myth" crowd and sadly shake my head.
Grr I hate that people think if you don't have children you have no reason to have anything. Some people CAN'T have kids. Should they just die?
This is why we all should record any conversations .. that way she has proof of what was said. I use it at work all the time.
Women without children need money too! How do yu expect us to feed ourselves?
These married/unmarried/with kids/no kids excuses are bullshit. My marital status or gender has no bearing on what I bring to the table and should be compensated for. I've rejected potential employers, back in the day, rationalizing their lowball because I'm single.
“To help increase self-awareness in those around you, especially with the goal of being more receptive to feedback, role model your own practices of self-awareness. One way to role model your commitment to self-awareness is to ask for feedback from your colleagues. Asking questions like, ‘What is one way I show up as a supportive leader? What is one thing I can do more to support you?’ help model your commitment to growth,” the psychology expert explained to Bored Panda.
It would have been a lot to ask of any 15 year-old. Please forgive yourself.
NOPE! As manager I encouraged work comp's for pure accidents. I didn't have any fake or exaggerated injuries, and I haven't worked in places where safety was of concern, so it wasn't all the time. I had a work comp once and it was denied. Huge issue with the work comp people -avoidance, silence on questions- until I said "Are you taking word of a co-worker that wasn't in the room who told you I did something I did not, just because he assumed it? Yeah, I asked what he told you and he was wrong." Stopped hearing from them to pay, and I never paid a cent.
I'd be like "here friend! have a cup of hot oil on your lap... it's just a thing between friends, ya know.
If they say "we're all friends," just remember it only means you get paid less for doing less, not stuff like you get paid more for doing more
Probably not much you could do at 15 unless you reported it anonymously to workplace safety. Does Cleveland have mandatory reporting of workplace accidents?
I had a small touch and go collision while coming down a bridge on a very icy road and was taken to court for it. A few days later someone’s Eastern European nanny slammed straight into my car, destroying the back fender. The cop pushed me to not file charges as “we were all friends”. We were the only non-white family in the town ( Darien, CT) and I ended up paying thousands for both accidents.
Well if we're all friends, you gonna pay my medical bills? The time I'm going to have to take off to recover? Cus if not, we're not good enough friends that I'm not gonna file that claim.
WTH? It has no loud colors, no mismatching fabrics, no embellishments, nothing but subdued blues and white. I bet the guy was just an anti-masker.
Clearly the green mask clashes with the blue and white. Completely unprofessional. Jokes aside your boss sounds like a jerk.
The heck? You're rocking it mate, what a pathetic excuse of a boss.
Seems like so many companies hire incompetent management who only guarantee that no competent employees will ever work for them, or work for long. And then wonder why they have so many problems with shrinkage and bad behavior.
Just a reminder to those treated like this... I know your instinct will be to quit on the spot. Do not do this. Wait until the absolute worst time. Snow storm coming? Freezers died? Dog has diarrhea in the doorway? Boss calls in late? That is when you let them know you are done. 2 weeks is a courtesy. Even if you give them notice. Make sure it's when they will feel it most.

Quite a few Americans are scared away by any mention of the word ‘socialism,’ and it’s no wonder, considering the US’ anti-socialist rhetoric during the Cold War. But socialism (especially democratic socialism) and communism are worlds apart.
The former is a legitimate way to structure and improve society and has achieved great success in some European countries while the latter is an evil ideology that has led to the deaths of around 100 million people. As anyone who’s ever opened up a history book will know, there’s a huge difference between the two.

I'm so glad we have worker's rights here and you're not allowed to be fired when sick.
In the UK we have this law, no firing when ill. A man I knew was injured at work safety rules not fully implemented, they sacked his 2 months later, whilst he was recovering. He is still fighting 2 years later

Terrible. There's absolutely no "loyalty" from corporations, it's all about the bottomline. I wish more people will understand this. Take whatever you can from them, if you're not feeling well, take the maximum days off allowed, don't do any extra, definitely not unpaid overtime.

My colleague had almost the same situation with her manager. Once while on vacation, her son had a motorbike accident on their last day in a remote holiday location. This meant she had to accompany him to a hospital and delay their return by a week. When she called to tell her boss she would be late coming back to work, his very first reply wasn't expressing concern for her son (who hes met before so knew personally) but to ask how soon she could get back! When she came back, she really let him have it and he sheepishly kept apologising.
My sister died at 8 Am on a Monday. My husband was fired for taking the day off to be with me. B/c, y'know. Family crises show up on a nice schedule, after sending advance warning.
You should have tried harder in predicting the future. What a disappointment.
Communism is what you want to stay away from and actively fight back against it. Socialism on the other hand? It’s what keeps your work environment safe, improves your job satisfaction, and generally ups your quality of life. And it doesn’t have to be a binary choice, either. Capitalism can work hand-in-hand with good working conditions, fair labor laws, and a safety net if you ever need it. However, that requires plenty of compromises on both sides. Companies and employees alike rarely want to meet in the middle.

Well boss got what he got: a worse situation. I got a sinus infection once and previously had ear infections as a complication. I hadn't asked for time off yet and was 2 months into a job. I said I wanted to have an appt any time this week so I can get meds and would come in early and return after. She didn't bother looking for a replacement and immediately said no. Luckily did not have the complication, but we both would have been schitt out of luck if I was home for a week with a double ear infection. Yet, it meant she did not believe me. She did follow up a week later and asked how I was, but I believe to try to catch me in a lie.
Having a sick worker preparing food is a bad management in my book. The rest ist just lack of any human decency on managers side.

First of all, it's not legal. Second, no one can make you work 24 hours in a row. Even residents in a hospital can lie down and nap for 20 minutes. Now imagine being a non-native English speaker. Things you get told and names you get called is limitless. What do we do? Smile and carry on with a heart full of tears because we don't want to lose our job.
Most of the time it's not even a choice to use an accent. In fact, my mom's friend has a thick accent. She came from India. Before covid, she asked me to help her with her English. So it wasn't a choice. I wish more people would understand that.
Tell that to someone with an Indian or Japanese accent and it is a racism situation. Then again, if you're in lengthy conversations with someone I do feel they should be understandable in general. A fast food is not lengthy. And everyone's ears are different so for me I don't understand accents as well as some may. I would never complain to then, that is a me issue not a them issue. I wish restaurants utilized the food better...best before is not a hard stop to throw away: the homeless would love the food.
I don't know about other countries, but in the US, the homeless have sued restaurants and stores, claiming they got sick on the "leftovers" that were donated. It costs companies too much in legal fees to fight every homeless person that makes a claim like that so policy is a flat no handouts, destroy the food
Load More Replies...that is 100% false and who ever told you that lied. You can 100% take anything to corporate if it is a franchise, that is part of being a franchise, that is in the laws for it on the federal level. Every major food chain has people at corporate specifically there to handle complaints against franchisees because if they didnt, they have legal liability as well
This is a jumpsuit, not a muumuu. And how are shorts more acceptable than a sleeveless shirt?

I handled knives at workplaces before I was 18 and it was definitely in Europe. Also deep fat friers and an honestly somewhat scary industrial grater.

Can't tell if it was warranted. Since she got the company card to pay for a new outfit, I tend to think it was inappropriate, but no way of knowing. This isn't bad management.
Why would they send her to such a shitty store, then?

Reminds me of that quote "America is a third-world country wearing a gucci belt"
I was sexually harassed and sexually touched at a new job and when I reported it to HR, I was fired. I know that was the reason because on a Friday morning, my boss said I was doing really well and he was very happy with my work. That afternoon I went to HR to complain and when I got to work on Monday, my boss was visibly shaking with rage. He said I was being sacked because I apparently almost cost the company a one million pound law suit because I had lost a blood sample (it was a private pathology company). The problem being, my job at that particular company didn't involve me handling blood samples.
Nothing much to say except I'm sorry and I wish you the best. ❤️
Load More Replies...I guess most, if not all, of these are from the wonderful US of A again. People should stop complaining and fix their labor laws if they want worker's rights. Unionize, vote for people who want change, refuse to work yourself to the bone, etc. But no... they make work their lives and complain about all of it.
The problem is if you stop complaining people assume the problem has been addressed. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. The average person cannot "fix their labor laws" and simply unionizing doesn't instantly solve all of the problems. In a family that lives paycheck to paycheck you don't have the option to not work yourself to the bone because if you don't your family goes hungry and you can't simply quit and find another job because there aren't other jobs available (at least not other jobs that don't have the exact same issues anyway). I'm not American, but I live in a country with a 32.5% unemployment rate (which is going to go up since we're not handling Covid well and more companies are going to fail). If I quit my job now, I will not get another one. So yes, I'm going to put up with crap I shouldn't put up with and "make work my life" because the alternative is losing my only source of income. That's reality. That's why people stay in crap jobs.

Most of the examples above would lead to an employer facing a disciplinary, tribunal or even criminal prosecution in the UK.
I mean, same here. I think a lot of people just don't know their rights and employment suits can be tough to win and can ruin your reputation. But. Many of these examples are egregious and could win a lottttt of damages if people only followed through. It's too bad really.

One of my coworkers and me worked all alone in a small workshop once. It was composed of 2 buildings very close to each other. My desk was near the exit of one of these. Exit where my coworker decided to smoke, door open and not outside because he didn't "want to smoke under the rain, you know?". He knew full well that I have weak lungs and can't handle the smoke much, so I asked him to either go oustide and smoke or go in the second building (a few meters away from us). He bent to be eye level with me (and he was 2 heads taller), looked me in the eyes and just said "It's your problem, not mine. You want to get away from the smoke? Ask for a smoking aera? Be. My. Guest. It is NOT my problem." He's the only one who smoke and I'm always the one who has to clean the cigarette's remains (bonus smell of cold tobacco added)

Do you mean "existential dread"? And bosses in general are not there to be on the side of the employees, just as HR isn't. There are rules and regulations that companies are meant to follow and most just "toe the line" without yielding any further.
