Working in tech support is not for the faint of heart. It requires patience, technical skills, and the ability to keep a straight face while a customer explains how mashed banana found its way into all of the crevices of their laptop.

To raise awareness for how horrific this industry can be, we took a trip to the Tech Support Gore subreddit and gathered some of their most shocking posts below. From electronics that look like they've been through wars to extremely questionable wiring, enjoy scrolling through this list that might trigger any former tech support workers. Be sure to upvote the pics that you find most amusing, and please remember to be kind to your tech support agents, pandas. They've seen some terrible things!

It would be unusual to have vents in the top of the case. Kitty has just found a warm place to sit.

Depending on the data drive the data could be very well preserved though you might need to disassemble it and read the parts individually.

Back in the dark ages, before memory sticks and other digital media I had a user that insisted on backing up all of her files on a DAT and deleted them from her computer, every day. Well we backed up all the files on everyone computer every night, but she deleted them for some reason. She came to me one day and wanted help recovering her files from the DAT as she had made a mistake, so she deleted the file from her computer, but couldn't get it to restore. I don't know how familiar people are with digital audio tape, or cassette tapes, but it is a plastic ribbon with magnetic media applied on one, or both sides. They are usually brownish, or similarly dark in color. The tape in the DAT this lady handed my was clear. She had backed up on the same, one, tape so many times she wore off all the media from it. She never checked the backup and never before tried to restore a file. Basically she lost all her work for like the last six months because she "knew better" how to protect her data.

I had one where the remote terminal in the shop kept dropping. Turns out they had used two of the wires in the CAT5 cable for the landline phone. I was assisting over phone, not in person so it took a bit of conversation to arrive there.

The Tech Support Gore subreddit has been around since February 2012, but it has somehow never run out of new content. According to the group’s About section, anyone who works in tech support may “cringe to the brink of passing out after a few minutes looking at this subreddit.”

From photos of laptops that have been left in the fridge overnight to devices that were set on top of hot stoves, tech support workers have apparently seen it all. This subreddit has amassed an impressive 607k members over the years, yet unfortunately,  it seems to have made no progress in preventing customers from making questionable decisions with their electronic devices.

I can see the strata of technology. The large twisted pair phone cable, the BX power cable, then we go newer with MC power cable and cat 5. I bet the building was built in the early 80s and updated in the early 2000s.

Calling tech support can be daunting, exhausting, embarrassing and frustrating. You might be on hold for 45 minutes before an underpaid employee simply tells you to restart your device, and then it miraculously decides to work again. But if this subreddit tells us anything about what it’s like to work for tech support, that experience is arguably more excruciating than being a customer.

People put their devices through hell, and then expect employees to magically repair them. Customers are impatient and demand quick fixes, and employees can only do so much when a laptop has been through a house fire. While I’m sure you pandas treat your devices gently, please remember that if something goes wrong, it’s not the tech support employee’s fault if they can’t bring your tablet back to life.

Need to look at the exact TV models to see what they are rated at, but from what I can find on the next, a 65" plasma TV takes about 570W, which is well below the rating of the timer. However, they may draw a larger startup current, and if they all come on at the same time, that could easily burn out the timer. The timer really should have had an internal fuse rated at 13A, which would have prevented this.

While you’ll find a wide variety of posts in Tech Support Gore, the community is not the place for everything tech support related. "A lot of the content on the subreddit does rather well, except for people coming for actual tech support, they get redirected to the right subreddit,” Coffeechipmunk explained. “For actual tech support gore, though, it seems like broken screens and slightly messy wires are the current posts that don't hit too hard.”

Reminds me of when my family was in Greece. It stayed very hot overnight so we left fans on in our bedrooms. My brothers one stopped working and made a weird noise as it gave up the ghost in the middle of the night. When the sun came up and lit up the room we could all see a poor mouse had met it demise inside the fan.

No one sees the owl??? It's on the top right corner.

As far as why Tech Support Gore has become so popular, Coffeechipmunk attributes the group’s success to how much fun it is. "In a time where most of the internet can be incredibly serious and most times saddening or angering, r/techsupportgore is fun because you go on it and you can laugh (and/or cringe) at the crazy posts,” the moderator previously told Bored Panda.

“Where else can you see a post like, ‘Wow, these cables really are messy’ to, ‘A lizard fried my motherboard’ back to back? I love our growing community. They're a bunch of people that just enjoy tech and to some extent, the worst of it,” Coffeechipmunk said.

What's the recipe again? Let me just look it up.

When it comes to what makes working in tech support so challenging, customer expectations are likely to come in at the top of the list. According to Contact Services, 66% of customers expect an employee to engage with them immediately when they reach out to a company, and 54% expect all encounters to be personalized. There’s also a lot of pressure on employees to provide excellent service, as 76% of customers say they would rather do business with a competitor after having more than one bad experience with a company.

According to Indeed, the average salary tech support workers earn in the United States is $21.65 an hour, with $13.39 being at the lowest end and $34.99 being the maximum they can expect to earn. But unfortunately, many of these workers say they’re not being compensated fairly for all of the work they do, as only 46% say they earn enough to keep up with the cost of living in their area.

Read: it was the PoE port. Power over Ethernet. Those ports can carry huge currents to feed downstream devices and not need a wall plug. It can get to scary current draws especially when a PoE port is "dumb" it will just give and give and give until something pops. More Modern PoE devices sense a "thirsty device" and can cut power or refuse to go higher. Modern Thunderbolt/USB-C/PoE can push over 100W per cable.

I'm having flashbacks to when I fried the motherboard of a client's original IBM PC (8086). Still can't believe it, but their modem's power supply cable used one of those round 6-pin mini-DIN connectors. It fit into the keyboard port perfectly. No visible damage like the photo here but had to replace their motherboard, at my cost; integrity can be expensive.

That's not the issue. Plenty of access points run off PoE, particularly business grade like this one. They had some kind of massive power surge, or the poe injector suffered an issue, or some internal component failed, or the cable run was messed up & it came in contact with a power line or something.

As you can see from the photos on this list, working in tech support can be an absolute roller coaster. Tiny bit of alcohol to clean the contacts we can see, or at worst a tiny bit of something metallic to rebuild the power strip, new cables, jobs a goodun. The actual SATA connector is totally undamaged. A picture of an overloaded cable doesn't tell us anything about the state of the drive.

Can be done, if it's important enough. That looks like a standard HDD, so a data recovery company can *probably* get the data off of it. It ain't cheap, though. Best bet, IMO - see if you can buy an identical HDD and swap the board. I've done it a few times successfully and if it doesn't work, the data recovery option still exists.

I am jinxed. USB drives fail when they see me. A computer specialist for Micro POS gave me the evil eye sign once, because equipment failed wherever I happened to be, and I mean he saw me walk in the door and the system crashed while I did that. I wish that CD read/write drives were still a normal thing, never had a disk go south on me.

This is normal when disping of a hard drive with sensitive information. It's hard for even IT to know if the data absolutely can't be recovered, so outside if professional disposal, it's not uncommon to physically destroy the hard drive in such a fashion.

Yep. I always put a drill through old hard disks before disposing of them. Never know what old bills, bank statements, payslips, and other documents I've left on there, so easiest just to destroy the drive.

I have one like that in my house. it's cos there's a network cable in the walls that was originally connected in the wrong room. running a cable from behind the 2nd port through the wall to the right room was cheaper than getting the entire thing redone, and using a short port to port bridge like that makes it work.

Maybe the OP was hoping less tech savvy people would be impressed by the sheer amount of cables, rather than just think it's utterly normal for a LAN party to look like that.

Piece of s**t compound. Back in the old old days, the innards of Commodore 64 power supplies were coated in this muck, which was all then sealed in unopenable heavy plastic. Ooo no, why let them be serviced when you can force people to buy costly new ones! But the bigger problem was because this made them overheat, they seriously blew out the computer's circuits as the boxes aged.

Roaches love nesting inside of machines. The warmth makes them happy. I worked at a specific chain coffee shop in jersey city and we had an infestation. They would live in the espresso machine, coffee grinder, and the underneath of the sandwich station. I fought as hard as I could but the owners wouldn't get a real exterminator and my spraying every night wasn't fixing the issue. I decided I couldn't work for those people anymore shortly after this....

From a former restaurant manager- not only is that just dirty, it is a health violation to spray with otc pesticides (and yeah, that is not effective). They need to get a real exterminator, like you said, and spray more frequently during an infestation, then once a month for maintenance; restaurant employees need to prep for this, which involves wrapping dishes, cutlery, food items exposed etc before they come out and spray. I hope you reported them.

It's not the roaches in the machine, but the one outside of the machine you should worry about. The place must be infested to get it this way.

In one of my old jobs, a client wanted me to look at their home PC as it kept stalling and shutting down. Turned out the CPU was hitting 90C then the thermal protection was kicking in. A close inspection revealed that the CPU heatsink was not actually touching the CPU. One quick trip to the shops, a new heat sink and some thermal paste from home and the CPU came down to about 30C

Prove me wrong, but most of the stock coolers are perfect for their CPUs. The only issue they generate on their own is noise. If your CPU is overheating without overclocking, check the airflow of the case and the paste. 99% of the time it is the source of the issue. I write this from my Xeon workstation... with stock intel cooler.

That doesn't look like 2 heatsinks together but rather one much beefier one. Just using the beefier one properly would probably drop the temp even more.

This is why electronics really need to be in filtered enclosures. For all their limitations I still like the Dell Optiplex XE machines. They were designed to be run permanently overheated. One chock-full of carboard fibers has been happily humming away in my shipping department for 13 years. We had a bar Mitzvah for it in September.

Reminds me of some servers I was given. Came from a fiberfill plant. After I blew them out it looked as if it had snowed in front of my shop. I told the tech that they needed to be in an enclosed room. He said they were not only in a closed room but also inside of filter cabinets. That nylon dust is so small it gets in there anyway. He said he had cleaned them within the last 90 days. Even after blowing them out, a sticky film I couldn't remove was left behind. I can't imagine the health risks working in that place. I'm betting it will be 21st century version of asbestos lung. I finally scavenged them for various parts and scrapped the rest.

Reminds me of a Dell 690 I bought some years ago. They practically gave it away because it had a big dent in the case. I bought it for parts but when I turned it on it worked just fine and even had the riser card with second processor. What I didn't know or see was someone had messed with the second processor heatsink and it wasn't tight. So after a few months of operation at 100% load it gave up the ghost. Not sure what went south but it would never work again with RAM on the riser. I even changed the riser. It would accept the second processor, but not the RAM. Ran it like that for years and moved up to better machines.

Should've seen what I did with a slim server someone gave me. Power supply fans were toast yet it still worked. Could've cooked on the PS it got so hot. Those little fans were expensive so I popped the top off and placed a 4" fan on top of it. Ran like that for years. Used it as a PC in a work shop so appearance didn't matter and if it bough the farm, nothing lost.
