Not every employee can be the sharpest tool in the toolbox. In fact, it seems that some of them probably shouldn't be in the toolbox at all...
Below, you'll find some of our favorite posts from the Idiots at Work Instagram page, which features facepalm worthy moments from a wide variety of industries that might make you wonder how these employees haven’t been fired yet. So enjoy scrolling through this list of stupidity, and be sure to upvote the choices that made you lose a bit of faith in humanity!

This is the kind of irony Alanis should have sung about.

My mom doesn’t know how to copy and paste so when she wants to send me a link she writes it down on the paper, takes picture and sends the photo to me. It usually looks like this except in her bad handwriting. Edited to add: I have shown her many times how to copy and paste, she can do it and then forgets by the time I walk out of the door.
We’re all capable of doing some stupid things in our personal lives. We might leave the house wearing a shirt inside out by accident or drive away while our coffee was sitting on the top of our car. But if there’s anywhere that we should be professional and on our game at all times, it’s in the workplace. While on the job, we’re getting paid to not be stupid, so to ensure that we don’t lose our jobs, most of us try to hold it together.
We don’t discuss inappropriate topics, we avoid scrolling on our phones or dressing too casually, and we get through the day by being productive, professional and safe. Well, most of us do. For those individuals who make reckless and questionable decisions while on the job, the Idiots at Work Instagram page is waiting in the wings to feature a photo of your masterpieces.
This reminds me of "Steal This Book" by Abbie Hoffman, 1970. And yes, people did steal the book.
how am I to know if I need to read this from bottom to the top? I bet this place gets a lot of Karens

As hilarious as the photos on this list may be, there’s no question that some of them are actually quite dangerous. From bricks flying down the highway without being properly secured to the back of a truck to people balancing on Frankenstein’s monster-esque combinations of ladders, it’s likely that some accidents occured due to what’s going on in these photos.
According to Zippia, about 2.6 million nonfatal workplace accidents and injuries occur each year in the United States. Sprains, strains and tares are the most common injuries to sustain, while overexertion, slips, trips, falls and contact with objects and equipment account for the vast majority of these injuries.
Or a specific piece of equipment that is made to put bends in tubing!

Do they make pickups that are front wheel drive? I don't claim to be a mechanical genius, but I believe that's the only way this could work.
It's a Dacia 1304. It absolutely is front wheel drive. Also, they stopped manufacturing those in 2006. And yes, this is in Romania.
Load More Replies...Was to say Romanian too but the I wasn't sure . To blurry the plate but seems RO
Load More Replies...In the US you'd get in big trouble for doing that! It would be a very expensive ticket. Probably for reckless driving.
Man I wish I could make out the text. It's just too grainy. But I want to know where this is.
It is from the Ilfov county, which is surrounding Bucharest, Romania.
Load More Replies...It was on the log that fell out three blocks back.
Load More Replies...All of these workplace accidents cost the American people a pretty penny each year, coming in at a whopping $250 billion annually. And in 2022, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, had a budget of $591,787,000. But of course, not every workplace has an equal level of risk. 15% of injuries that occur while on the job in the US happen in manufacturing jobs, and construction has some of the highest on the job fatality rates. However, line cooks have been found to be at the highest risk of contracting COVID-19 while at work.
I'm just trying to figure out HOW? He had to take the corner too sharp backwards to make that happen.
He probably leaned way out of the forklift to hang up the sign.

As long as they said the magic words, "that isn't going anywhere", they're good.

I don’t think the squirrel was lying down… alive. Poor thing. OR if we want to be positive, in the old Looney Tunes cartoons, Pepe lePeu would be out searching for her if she were rockin’ a white painted stripe. Oh la la.
Load More Replies...Not all stupidity in the workplace leads to accidents and fatalities, however. Sometimes, it simply leads to less than brilliant employees losing their jobs. Liz Ryan wrote a piece for Forbes detailing the stupidest things she’s had to fire employees for, and she first notes that someone lost their job for stealing other workers’ lunches. Apparently, when the lunch thief got caught, he told Liz, “I didn’t like this job anyway.”
That's a pedestrian bridge over the canals at La Villete Park in Paris. That outside area is not accessible without hopping the rail. Likely the rail originally went to the outside but for safety reasons (bad cement or something) was moved in. It's a long link, but if you want to see one end of it, you can see it on Google Maps. https://www.google.com/maps/place/La+Villette/@48.8945685,2.3917226,3a,15y,137.22h,86.82t/data=!3m8!1e1!3m6!1s-TJK0mhQ4ssQ%2FWFFTAClYnaI%2FAAAAAAAB0kw%2FRTfujiRTzJMQy3bhrXdfJcJQuIVyzr2iACLIB!2e4!3e11!6s%2F%2Flh3.googleusercontent.com%2F-TJK0mhQ4ssQ%2FWFFTAClYnaI%2FAAAAAAAB0kw%2FRTfujiRTzJMQy3bhrXdfJcJQuIVyzr2iACLIB%2Fw203-h100-k-no-pi-0-ya68.33524-ro-0-fo100%2F!7i8704!8i4352!4m7!3m6!1s0x47e66dc9c9c1ba1d:0xf853a3c25346e69f!8m2!3d48.8938489!4d2.39026!10e5!16zL20vMDZ0Ym43?entry=ttu

The problem isn't necessarily the design of the flamingo (though it could have been better). The real problem is the size of the cup used.
that's what i was thinking. their bins had to be covered, so they put something up to not be badgered about it
Load More Replies...This has got to be Germany. I see gates like this a lot and it's bizarre. Hide the bins at all costs, but don't be under any illusions that they are safe!
Now it's just freakin annoying to steal this garbage bin. Possible but annoying.
Maybe they're afraid of someone stealing the bins, but don't mind what's inside
Could also be to secure the bins during a storm. Neighbours across from me never do and the place is a mess every time a storm hits.
Load More Replies...Liz went on to note that she’s fired “about a dozen people for having sex in the electrical closet or the security room or someplace else.” Another employee even invited two “call girls” to his room while on a business trip and charged the expense to a company credit card. There’s nothing wrong with having fun on your own time in your own home (and with your own money), but it is quite idiotic to mix work and play like that.
Sure, leave a blowtorch unsupervised in a room full of flammable materials, why don't you?
Time to test those supposedly flame-retardant materials up to building code. You don't want untested stuff in your house, do you?
Load More Replies...My guess is it's too cold either for comfort or for say some glue to set. This is a very unsafe and inefficient space heater...
Load More Replies...Jeebus, some people just have to respond even if they have no idea what they're blathering about. First, there is no way the flame positioned there would ever ignite anything seen. Second, unsupervised?!? Who the hell took the picture genius? Third, obviously a lot of people here have never worked in a North Dakota or Wisconsin winter. When it's -10F a single tank could've resulted in a revolt and possible national news coverage. Here's something to scare you silly. That gas furnace in your basement? Same thing, only enclosed in a small box. Oh no!
In case of fire, break the glass, pull out the angle grinder, and remove the hand rail.
To access, use screwdriver or drill bit to remove railing, don't leave until you attempt to put out the fire! Hmm....we're being sued? Why? We have a firehose
At least people are less likely to fall down the stairs when they are fleeing the building fire.
Look building, we all need a shoulder to cry on occasionally but we have a biiit of s situation here!
Building, it's only Tuesday - can't this wait for the weekend and a few beers?

Load More Replies...When I look at this, I hear Madeline Kahn in Blazing Saddles singing "I'm tah-yard"
OK this is one of my literal nightmares, I keep having exactly this nightmare.
Another infraction Liz says she’s had to fire employees for is selling drugs at work. One of them defended himself by noting that he never sold anything in the building, as he always used the alley instead. But unfortunately, this wasn’t enough to be able to keep his job. Another employee apparently made up his entire career history, lying about his education as well. “Never hurts to try,” he told Liz in defense.
Doesn't really fit the headline - no one taking stupidity to new heights here - quite the opposite.
A doctor brought me into this world. I assume he became one on purpose, but you never know sometimes.
Yes, in the village of Bornem in 2014. The railroad was closed for maintenance, they knew it, and they staged this picture for the fun of it. Went viral and now pops here and there without context and is being taken seriously by waaaaay to many people ^^ Those little ramps are used when the hose has to cross a street, so vehicles can pass over it. But not trains, obviously.
Load More Replies...I looked and thought "that looks fine, they don't need to cover the middle because the train can't drive on that part...". Then I thought about it and read a comment, and then I was like "oh ... Oooohhhhhhh"
It actually takes surprisingly much to derail a train. There is an old video where they test it by taking out a larger and larger portion of the track, and unless you actually bend the track to delibrately through the train of course, you need to remove several feet of it. So I am not so sure that that would be enough to do the trick. Typically the wheels are paired two to an axle with tow axles paired in a bogie. So if you only lift one set of wheels of the track, there is a good chance that the other pair will still steer the bogie enough that the first pair will end up back on the track.
Obviously is on purpose hahahahahah and funny
Load More Replies...One more creative, yet still idiotic, way that an employee got fired by Liz was hiring a market research firm and paying the firm thousands of dollars before Liz realized there was no firm at all. The money was simply going to the employee’s boyfriend who was sitting at home and crafting invoices to provide to the company. The employee did all of the market research herself and handed it in under the guise of the fake firm she created. An elaborate plan, but not good enough to keep her from getting fired.
It actually is ! The largest yew hedge, still standing in Cotswolds , Bathurst estate
Load More Replies...The world's tallest yew hedge at Bathurst Estate in the Cotswolds, England. This pic is from 1962 and is part of the Bettmann Archive. These days it's trimmed by a two-man team using a cherry picker, and it still takes them 12 days. I can't imagine what it must have been like doing it by ladder!
This is a cropped image. What you don't see is that the ladders are leaning against the hedge, and that rope trailing is going out to the side, not down the right, and is anchored to an dirt compacter/roller to keep them from shifting sideways in addition to the top being lashed to the other ladder. Full sized image: WL9gPvs.jpeg
That's solid. Nothing stupid about it unless you consider the core concept of ladders to be stupid. It's a good set-up.
How many times would they have to move the ladder to finish pruning that hedge? It's huge!
Fun fact: When i was in the Navy we would do the same thing to cracked helicopter windows with wire
When I worked as a City fleet mechanic, we used zip ties on the dump trucks.
Load More Replies...modern plastic bumpers are not really to protect you or the car in case of a collision. They give buffer time for the sensors to detect what's happening and deploy the safety systems, pretensors, airbags, pyro fuses etc etc.
The plastic is over the actual "bumper" (actually called an impact bar), it is just there to make the car aerodynamic/pretty.
Load More Replies...Not sure, I think grandma would have matched the yarn colour 🤣
Load More Replies...At least there is a bumper. I've seen so many cars lately where the whole bumper is just gone. I think it's a street racer thing here. They always were stupid AF.
Another stupid (and cruel) activity that Liz caught an employee committing was selling fellow employees a service that guaranteed their undocumented relatives green cards. This service did not in fact exist, and the employee was simply taking innocent people’s money. Liz acknowledges that people who behave stupidly in the workplace obviously have other issues they need to confront, but they’ll need to do so while not working for her.
Look at the teeth on the ring part. They're practically non-existent.
Load More Replies...Foged? That's a new one for me. I'm wondering how it differs from forged 🤔
I have a scissor for cutting nails that became brown over time, while the word "stainless" was stamped into it. So now I wonder what "stainless" means.
This is actually pretty common. Planning is turning into a lost art, it seems.
My other ridiculous one is the handicap door that is not automatically open. You have to pull it open but it weighs about 1000 pounds. Explain to me how someone in a wheelchair is supposed to open that? I had a friend try telling me that handicap people have the world handed to them and everything is easy for them these days. I told him that as a person who is handicapped and has been on a two year waitlist for a hospital bed and a one year waitlist for a wheelchair, he can f*#k off with his c**p.
Load More Replies...I was an ADA inspector as part of a job a long time ago. Saw much worse than this. Most businesses are pretty decent at it, and would ask for suggestions on how to improve further. The only time I had to write a notice was to the state. They put an outward swinging door on a small platform, so someone in a wheelchair had no room to open the door. -eye roll - ADA isn't an enforceable law per se, it only makes it very easy to sue non-compliant entities. It's also written rather poorly, so some ridiculous things are still compliant.
Platform 9 and 3/4s, light pole style: Just take a run at it! Metaphorically speaking, that is. 😄
The only issue would be the cross ladder acting as a base. Though that looks OK. Stacking the step ladders is maybe the most stable way to go about it from there. They won't rock. Tilting it sideways would take effort to intentionally do so. Stack a few then compare how secure you feel on a 6 foot A ladder
Are you feeling smarter after seeing all of these pictures of idiots at work, pandas? We can only hope that no one was harmed in the making of these photos, and please remember not to try any of these ideas at home. It is always interesting when a photo makes you go ... OH ... my ... God!
Just noticed something. Why does everyone assume these pics are all taken in the US? Everyone knows OSHA isn't an international group, right?
Hydraulic systems fail sometimes. Think of that next time your car is on the rack getting an oil change or repair. Be sure to tell your mechanic he's an idiot. The people are in front of the machine, not under it. Recognizing scale requires being familiar with relative size of it. But seriously. Explain to your mechanic the lift is too dangerous to stand under
Just expect a giant rat to be attached to the other end, when you pull him back up...🙂
Tomorrow's headline: "Pantsless Man Found Dazed and Confused in Storm Drain"

As far as I understand, this is for baby strollers. The stroller wheels fit the ramp, the parent/guardian uses the steps in between to walk while they're holding the stroller. Source: I'm from Russia, it's frequently built this way there and saw these in use many times.
Same here in Finland, they are not made for wheelchairs. Although they are also not put on new builds as they are a bit dangerous and hard to use. I’m completely convinced this is from a railway station, the stairway from the platforms to the underground passage.

This reminds me of when the city put yellow lines around my apartment building to prevent people from parking in front of it, including residents. One person was parked outside of it and they put the yellow line on the sidewalk on the side of the car and then the cop wrote that person a ticket while it was being painted. Needless to say they were able to fight it out with the police chief. Just stupid. At least give people time to move their cars. 😂

I'm not really seeing the problem here. Maybe rotate the picture on the wall 90 degrees anticlockwise and it would look perfectly normal. What am I missing?

In case of fire, just bring the fire to the extinguisher, because that extinguisher ain't going anywhere!
Is it actually chained up though? Looks to me like it's the chain for the roller door just kinda bunched up on top of the extinguisher to keep it out of the way.
Load More Replies...This fire extinguisher is not intended to carry inside the store to fight a fire; it is mounted near the entrance/exit and is intended to be used to clear a path to the door if fire was blocking egress. Store owners do not want employees or customers to go put out a fire, they want people to be able to get out of the building.
Some of these are quite funny. I don't care if it's a repeat of something else, I hadn't seen lots of them before... Some people really need more chill in their lives IMO.
Those that show dangerous behaviour at work - I never got why people do that. The boss, usually, is fuming once he sees it happening, yet he's the only one profiitting off of it - if he's the owner, and not just a procurists or so. People get really creative in bypassing safety measures, without any benefit for themselves, and are proud if they're so sneaky they can do it in front of the boss and not get caught. I'd violate a lot of OSHA and equivalent, would I shake my head accordingly...
I get you. I've seen many of these on BP before, but they still make me chuckle.
