30 Times People Failed At Geography So Badly, They Made The Internet Facepalm (New Pics)
Most of us have been there: you post something online that you’re 100% sure is the absolute truth, flexing those big cognitive muscles of yours… only to realize that you made a mistake. You blush. You start sweating. You realize that you’ve made an utter fool of yourself. On the internet of all places! And now, your blunder will forever live in the Internet Hall of Infamy, also known as the r/facepalm subreddit.
The online community is full to the brim with people making epic mistakes. But few of them are as painful to see as when someone boasts about their [cough] ‘deep’ knowledge of geography [cough]. For anyone even with a rudimentary knowledge of geography, the posts you’re about to see might make you lose a bit of hope in humanity. Put on your safari hats, scroll down, upvote the worst geo fails you’ve seen, and don’t forget to share your unfiltered opinions in the comments, dear Pandas! Just remember not to feed the F-grade students…
Once you’ve completed the trek through this list and if you feel like you’d love to go on another humorous adventure, then you’ll probably love Bored Panda’s previous article about facepalm-worthy geography fails. Check it out right over here.

Well actually ......... Australian Scientists (along with Scientists in the UK, USA, France Germany and China) have been working on a vaccine for SARS-COVID since the first outbreak in 2002-2004. The Aussie Scientists work for the Government organisation which was Commonwealth Serum Laboratories under another Govt Agency. They all collaborated their work after the 2019 outbreak and assisted in bringing about a vaccine which is why it happened so soon. I have no doubt the others were also government funded.

Wonder if this OP knows the US military is fundamentally a socialist organization. I doubt it. (For those who don’t realize it: the military has their own legal, medical, and pay scale structure. All members are entitled to essential benefits for food, housing, medical, legal and other needs, and can earn further benefits due to their rank or life situations such as being married or having kids. All payed for or subsidized by the government = socialist ideology. )
I would say most US citizens definitely DON'T realize that. And one of the big lures of joining the military are the benefits you laid out

Why? It’s a study in how one industry more or less drove the economy and once it left, so did the people. And it has happened countless times across the country. We need to talk about it and try to figure out how it all went wrong.

The United States is a military country, most of the Government resources go towards National Defence, Space Exploration. There is not much difference between The United States and Russia in that regard. That’s why it is the only industrialized country without universal healthcare. Look, Pandas, we all had our favorite and least favorite subjects back in school. For instance, yours truly always enjoyed history, literature, and biology. Math, on the other hand, was a pure nightmare. For me, personally, geography fell squarely in the middle of the pack.
The subject itself was incredibly interesting. After all, who doesn’t enjoy learning about volcanoes and global cultures, and drawing maps in class? However, a lot of this enjoyment rose and fell depending on the teacher. Some were very strict and gave you awful grades for failing to memorize all of the important geographical locations around the world. Others, however, made the subject fun, relatable, and, well, not a chore.

This whole cultural appropriation thing is a very recent woke stupidity. If you study even a little bit of history, you will see that cultural appropriation is what has made humanity what it is. There is nothing more fruitful than cultural contact. Protesting about this is at the same level as flat earthers.
Thank you so much for finally mentioning it! I was afraid everybody would just follow all of this nonsense blindfolded...

There is a difference between appropriation and appreciation. It all depends on the respect that is shown to the culture. I'm all for respectful displays to educate or enhance people's enjoyment of other cultures. But using cultural trappings to denigrate the cultures they depict, like all forms of disrespect, should be stopped.
Kim Kardashian and the Kimono is a good example of bad cultural appreciation.
Load More Replies...There is cultural appropriation and then there is gate keeping. Sometimes someone might wear their hair or wear a shirt common to another culture and they aren’t even aware of it. They just liked it and meant no disrespect, yet are admonished by a member of that culture saying it’s “theirs”. You can usually tell when someone is flat out being disrespectful or trying to be hurtful. That is the time to be using the term cultural appropriation.
If you aren't taking the p**s and you aren't pretending it was your invention and making money out of it, I wouldn't worry
Load More Replies...Cultural sharing and appreciation is important, but I think what you might be missing when you denigrate cultural appropriation is some of the motivation behind the frustration of minority groups when they, historically, have been treated as lesser for their culture, and then they see the dominant culture not just borrow or 'appreciate' something, but take whatever they want from that culture and profit enormously from it. White rappers and pop artists, for instance. Influencers and fashion designers. The not mocking thing is important, of course, and making sure you're not s******g all over something sacred, but so is the structure of our world that rewards people extremely unequally for similar attributes.
Cultural appropriation is like cancel culture: It only exists in the minds of people wanting to interfere in other people's lives.

Although the flag looks similar, the British flag has no stars on it. I politely tried to explain that I am not a racist bigot but simply have a generous British brother in law. Almost all of the r/facepalm geography fails are related either to ignorance or arrogance. Sometimes, both! People either don’t know basic facts. Or they think they know something, only to be proven very, very wrong.
In cases of extreme embarrassment, your instinct is probably to shy away and defend yourself. However, that’s really not the best approach because it may lead to deep-seated feelings of shame further down the line.

Someone's Geography Needs Some Upgrading
It works because people actually want it to work. Usually, the town or some other regional entity decides and pays everything about public transport, and often, it's a major factor in regional elections. As our system isn't as divided and in a warlike state like yours, on regional level, the elected governments often are pretty similarly acting, regardless of party, about more general things, but take a different approach on public transport and generally traffic and infrastructure, and therefore, this is often what makes one win or lose the election - other words: We care about that stuff, we vote according to that stuff, we know how useful it is, and therefore, we treat ourselves with some underground trains in almost every major city, and at least some kind of Tram'n'Bus, we have everywhere.
Europe was completely destroyed in WW-II. When they rebuilt, they decided to do it right. It took over 50 years of everybody working towards the goals set forth. From industry to people to politicians. In the Netherlands a woman gets a year of paid maternity leave, 2 years if she or the baby have issues. Here in the US, a woman would make sure to get pregnant every 9 months just to stay out of work. So many things in the US are about agendas, appearances, racism, or special interest groups. Even a single party cannot make important decisions on what they want to do anymore. We just can't have nice things here.
Load More Replies...The numbers relevant to the issue are not size, but population density and distribution.
Or, the desire to install rail networks. Most are not due to wars.
Load More Replies...Uhhh… I kinda see their point in that the area of Europe, an entire continent, is still very close to the area of one country. Although one could argue that if each state made it a priority we could probably get it done art that level
Okay, they're absolutely, completely and totally wrong, however, the US has a few things which make country-wide public transportation networks difficult: First, our population density is awkwardly situated with many miles/kilometers of open land between most large cities. Secondarily, our relative youth means most large cities gained their greatest population and industrialization after automobiles became an inexpensive and accessible form of transportation, making it easier to justify relatively low-cost road building instead of major funding for public transportation networks. Another minor aside, the way the US government is set up means States rights usually take precedence over Federal initiatives, this was especially true prior to the World Wars, during a time when other countries were actively developing large transportation networks. Example, our cross-country rail network was privately funded.
Good comments on this. One also has to take into consideration that 40% of that 10 million KM 2 is European Russia which is heavily populated only in a couple of cities. Now you have cut it down to 6 million KM 2 and then factor in the above and it explains much of the reason for our public transportation or lack thereof.
Load More Replies...I always assumed Europe had more advanced mass transport due to it being densely built centuries before automobiles. Whereas, the US is still living with a Wild West attitude of independence and a skewed attitude of toxic masculinity (real men don't use public transportation, blah, blah, blah).
Was the Trump Supporter label done on purpose? That would save a lot of time in real life.
Well to be fair Europe's 10million km2 is made up of many smaller countries who can have their own transport system which then links up to the bigger system. US is similar of many states but they don't seem to want to work with each other at all.

Previously, during an interview with Bored Panda, geography and cartography expert and land surveyor Patrick McGranaghan shared his thoughts about the state of the subject. He pointed out that some students see geography in a pretty negative light. Meanwhile, geography isn’t a priority in some schools.
"I think that a lot of geography ignorance comes from the lack of geographic instruction in schools. Schools have an increasingly long list of subjects that must be taught and geography is losing its share," he shared with us.
I Guess He’s Half Right
Nick Adams was born in Australia. In 2010, Adams served as the PR consultant for The Halloween Institute, a march to make Halloween a public holiday in Australia. It was later revealed those who 'protested' were paid actors. Nick Adams is a top-shelf, class-A, bona-fide, full-blown idiot, and Australia does not want him back, thank you.
In the interest of being as charitable as possible, while technically the Gulf of Mexico is a marginal sea of the Atlantic, it commonly is distinguished from the Atlantic, and people in Florida will refer to the west coast of Florida (the Gulf coast) as opposed to the east coast of Florida (the Atlantic coast). My guess is by “wrong coast”, he’s not confusing the Atlantic and Pacific or anything like that, but he’s clarifying (albeit sloppily) that the hurricane hit the Gulf coast of Florida (e.g. where Tampa and Fort Myers are) as opposed to the Atlantic coast (e.g. where Palm Beach and Daytona Beach are). Perhaps I’m being more generous than I should, but that’s how I interpreted the conversation.
It's not just the stupid and the ignorance. It's the doubling and tripling down on it.
I just know that Nick is a MAGA through and through because he's doubling down.

Load More Replies...There are actually different ideas on what to consider a continent and what not. In some categorizations, North and South America are considered a single continent, America, because they share a land connection, likewise Europe and Asia may be considered a single continent, Eurasia, for the same reason. So there's no consensus over whether we have 5, 6 or 7 continents.

Funny thing my Spanish teacher taught me... South America and Central America consider North, central and south America as one continent.
What makes a continent is definitely debatable. Not everyone agrees. Some places teach that there’s six or seven. I think it even makes sense to lump them into just four. Afroeurasia, the Americas, Australia, and Antarctica.
Syria is in Asia technology. SW Asia. What's funny is I know someone who came here from Libya. He is Arab. When he went to register his kids for school he was told that his kids were not white. He only had 5 races to choose from. So he picked the most obvious. African-American. Now he was told his kids were Asian-American by the school since Libya is in Asia.
So, according to people in this BP, Ukraine is in Asia, and is bigger than Russia, and full of venomous creatures.

Load More Replies...I like this one because if I were Scottish, I too would seek to stick it to the Monarchy in the most obtuse way possible.
The Queen mother was descended from the Royal House of Scotland and always regarded herself as a Scot. I am Scottish but I truly don't care. Hate is nothing admirable.
Load More Replies...I have a confession to make. I find this confusing. Britain, Great Britain, England, the United Kingdom. So yeah, Scotland is part of the UK, but it's also part of Britain because that's just another term for... It gets confusing. Should've just said she died on Scottish soil. So much easier.
British Isles = UK, Ireland, Channel Islands, Isle of Man...then United Kingdom = Britain/Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales) + Northern Ireland. It can be a bit much though.
Load More Replies...The Scots don't like the Brits at all, so it might be intentional to say they're "not the same country" just as a mild form of protest.
? Scotland is a part of britain. You probably meant.. dont like the english. Which also isnt a sweeping statement as i, as a scot, like england. Ha.
Load More Replies...Asian/Chinese Currency
i strongly recommend that you & your wife stay home, where, we all hope, that you’re safe & able to function on your own dude
I totally disagree : at least they are curious about other places, hopefully going there will teach them something.
Load More Replies...So I’m not allowed to use my asian dollars when I visit europe?? God dammit
Maybe they were asking if the tour people could give them the tour price in USD instead of CNY (yen)? I wanted to visit Japan and it was the first thing I asked, although I did put it into a currency converter to double check the exchange, but just getting a general idea first off the mark isn't crazy m IMO.
It's the "Asian/chinese" comment that's being mocked, not them asking for the price in dollars.
Load More Replies...Sigh.... Orient is outdated and oriental is a description of a f*****g rug. Asia is what it is called now. Calling someone oriental that is Asian is insulting. If you want to visit other countries and cultures PLEASE doing some reading of the places you want to visit PRIOR to going there. The amount of offense you could potentially create is immense and completely unnecessary and avoidable if you would just try to learn about the country a little before going.
As much as some people like to be the cultural police and look for the nonstarters to be offended by, or feel it their duty to correct others, doubt many Asians would be offended by "Oriental", though you may be offended for them.
Load More Replies...I don't understand lol. They can't convert currency in their head is all I'm getting from this
Gonna be one of those tourists who shout at the locals doing "DO YOU SPEAK AMERICAN?"
Amsterdam = Country
I mean, more than once I've had a convo go like "where are you originally from?" -"the Netherlands" "huh? -"Holland" "umm" -"Amsterdam?" "Oh yeah! Coffeeshops!" 😑
Really? To my non Dutch self, when i think of Netherlands, I think of tulips and dams. I have never been there though.
Load More Replies...If I remember correctly, it was happening in USA, Mexico, Netherlands, Iran (not sure).
Well... tbh, many people from Amsterdam see themselves as extremely special from the rest of the country, their city might as well be considered a country... But then, the same can be said of Frieslannd, Limburg, etc etc etc.
Oh the times I've been told 'so you go to coffeeshops' when I said I was Dutch... I'm not even 16...
"This may be by including geography lessons in learning about different cultures around the world. Geography is a component of current events and there needs to be an emphasis on how these events are occurring in a geographic context. Geography should not be taught in isolation, it should be tied to some context such as history, the physical Earth, culture, or travel.”
Peace And Harmony
Yeah well, as an Indian I don't think so. Sometimes, I believe we are at the brink of civil war or something.
Load More Replies...I don't get why this is on this post. I agree that islamophobic comments are awful, but why someone that identifies himself as Indian, and apparently is islamophobic, or maybe sarcastic (and by some aspects it's understandable given their history with Pakistan and Bangladesh, not excusable but understandable), is considered geographically ignorant?
Here's the thing, if u don't adjust the numbers to show posts per capita it's going to be misleading, since China is very restrictive on what they allow their people to access we will not count them. So then India and then the USA have the highest populations in the world after China, so u could probably pull those same kind of curves on most subjects. Remember that numbers can lie depending on how they are presented!!
So I guess UK has pretty high per capita posts? Factoring their population, it is higher than the US and India.
Load More Replies...Look being islamphobic doesn't makes u happy.. just like being racist, xenophobic, homophobic... yes it's not happiness
Load More Replies...Using raw numbers like this seems misleading. The three countries at the top of the list likely also have the highest number of tweets overall. Calculating the percentage of tweets from each country during that period would add some needed context.
Pak is actually 7th in the list according to the post.but i thought it was a islamic country.pls correct me if i am wrong
Honestly, I'm surprised that India was higher than the US, and not by a little, by 3x as much. That's an almost unfathomable level of hate. EDIT - I do understand there is history there and am aware of the conflict with Pakistan, my comment was more about the amount of Islamaphobic hate in the US is already unbearably high, and that hate also does have some history behind it, but to see a country that actually hates more... objectively, A LOT more... is both unbelievable and really, really sad.
Read a little Indian history and it becomes much less surprising.
Load More Replies...Sadly, all those dark-blue countries have had first-hand experience of islamist terrorism.
Definitely The Shape And Flag Of Colorado
Yep Colorado Native here that is us. 😅Also we legalized shrooms last week.
Coloradoan here, I love the jagged edge of our state
Load More Replies...Idiot. (Not that a lot of new Colorado people would know for sure this wasn't the flag...)
Countries On Map Of Africa Labelled Incorrectly On Gcse Geography Paper
I'm proud of myself because I actually realized this! I am lucky, because I was taught geography last year by a great teacher. I am thankful that I don't make these mistakes, and that the school I go to taught me.
Load More Replies...Bro why was this downvoted. PEOPLE! DOWNVOTES ARE NOT DISLIKES. They are REPORTS! I literally got suspended for a week because two comments got a combined total of 24 downvotes! Downvote when someone is insulting a fellow panda!
Load More Replies...If the GCSE can't be bothered to proofread/edit their exams, it doesn't bode well. Presently, British students are ahead of US students by a year or two, but not if errors like these continue.
On paper I understand that you shouldnt make these mistakes, but personally I would have not realised it was a mistake without other comments, I dont know/remember every country in africa, like I cant put every state in US on a map.. Im sure there are countries in europe I might get mixed up if I did some quiz.
I mean, Gabon borders the Republic of the Congo…fun fact, the capital of Gabon is Libreville
All I know is there are a lot of rich princes trying to get their money out of some of those countries. 😀
I have a friend that thinks Africa is a country. When you ask her what country her daughter in law is from, she says Africa. And you ask again , no I mean what country in Africa, she still answers Africa.
Get your child a GLOBE for their room. They will grow up knowing the basics of geography.
Would anyone like to know why my flat has a huge map of the world up on the wall? I have a daughter, she’s lived here since she was 6, she’s now 12. That map has been used for discussions about where certain foods come from, where humans originated from, where countries are that are in the news, how we travelled and discovered new peoples, y’know, stuff that helps a child learn about the world around them and helps them place themselves in it.
When I was stationed in Hawaii (25ID) I did have a couple of tourists ask where they could get their US dollars exchanged for Hawaiian money... I almost said that "2 coconuts, 5 shells, and a lava rock was the equivalent of $20 USD but I'd give them all that for $10." but decided that since I was in uniform, that probably would have been a bad idea.
In the UK we're not actually really taught about flags and geographical locations, unless the teacher wants to buts its not as standard. And there's very little taught about America so many have no idea of American states!
These are horrifying, and I haven't gotten through them all yet. But my main concern / question..... Aren't there idiots in countries other than the US. I mean, I know we unfortunately provide a huge, sadly high number of the world's idiots. But I'd feel better if there were examples of multinational idiots interest of just ours in the US. I tire of the idiocy here, and just have a shed of hope that we're not the only one plagued with excessive stupid.
Public education has been actively degraded for decades in favor of private schools, as a political goal, and the results speak for themselves.
I have a book on Japan with some interesting geography. Geography that said stuff like "Tokyo is a country" and put city locations in the sea/ocean. If this were a challenge post, I'd literally post this.
