Interview With Artist
This Belgian artist illustrates controversial modern-day issues that not everyone might find funny. But we, along with his 154K followers, enjoy Domien's artwork, and since this is not our first post on Bored Panda, we are sure you will find a chuckle in yourself when going over these as well.
While scrolling through these illustrations, you will notice their distinctive style. In a previous interview, Domien shared what has influenced his artwork: "I have always been an enormous pop-art lover since I was a child, so a lot of my style has been influenced by pop artists from the '60s and '70s. John Wesley, an American painter, is probably one of my biggest examples. He has a way of making rather explicit drawings in a way that makes them look innocent and kind. Alex Katz is also a major influence, in my opinion, he is the king of composition, making strange and awesome colorful settings that I can stare at for hours. When it comes to the cartoon part of what I do, Belgian cartoonist Jeroom is probably my biggest influence. He gets away with a lot of rude and controversial stuff just because he is so damn funny."

Domien is a funny guy, so we wanted to know how he strikes a balance between humor and delivering more serious messages. He shared: “I try to do both, but I consider myself a cartoonist first and an activist second. Meaning, I want to spread a message but also want the cartoons to be good and funny. It's not an angry, protest page but a positive one.”

Though Domien wrote that he is a cartoonist first, we do love that he is not afraid to spread and highlight important issues such as gender stereotypes, toxic masculinity, feminine issues, modern dating, social media, and many more.
We asked Domien to elaborate on the role of humor in conveying important messages to a wide audience and fighting against censorship. He shared: “I think using humor and bright colors (mostly pink and blue) are interesting weapons to cover a message. I always try to make my comics short and easy to understand so people get the message immediately when they see it. Because it's fast and easy, people hit the 'like' button more easily, so the message gets spread to a wider audience.”

OKAY BUT... the issue becomes when the center is reversed. When a larger woman is with a fit man the hatred and vitriol that is CONSTANTLY spewed is unbearable. It just... never stops. Men are "allowed" to be "funny" and attractive. But a a "fit" man can't be attracted to an unfit woman... 😔

Coming back to more current events, we asked if there are any that inspired Domien’s recent satirical illustrations. He answered: “I think as an illustrator, you can't ignore AI and what it's doing to our society. I'm both super thrilled about the possibilities but also scared of the impact on our society. It's an interesting subject to make jokes about because everyone is talking about it and has a strong opinion about it.”

Friendly reminder than condoms are only about 98% effective *before* user error, so while condoms are definitely a great, convenient, simple method of contraception and this guy should have no problem wearing one, if you plan on having sex with someone who seems like as much of an idiot as the guy shown in the comic, it might be good to have that extra precaution because I'm guessing his offspring would also be aśsholes.. :)

Birth control pills don't prevent STDs. Unless you know the person you're going to have sex with really, really, really well, use a condom. Hint: if you don't feel comfortable enough with that person to discuss their sexual history and STDs, you shouldn't be having unprotected sex with them.

Dude, just wear a condom. You have no idea what the other person could have or be hiding from you. I would say just DONT have sex unless you know the person inside and out, but that's not going to happen for everyone, so just protect yourself and others. Also, from a medical standpoint, HPV can lie dormant for YEARS and it causes cancer. I know first hand. I had stage one cervical cancer from the guy I lost my virginity to. It was devastating to hear I may never have kids or that I may need chemo on top of them taking a large portion of my cervix out. All this at 19 yrs old. Please, just use condoms and be safe out there!

Guys never got that when I was young, either. A condom??!! Oh no, it doesn't "feel right." It was like they all thought birth control was someone else's job. Condoms weren't foolproof in the 60s, either. So that was when I made a conscious decision to make birth control my responsibility. Mine alone. I never regretted it. I always knew I was in control of my own future. That empowered me.

I take birth control because my menstruations are killer otherwise. I get bad bloating, debilitating cramps, so much blood loss, and it lasts 3 weeks. It's on 3 weeks, off 3 weeks. And since it greatly reduces some women's immune system, I always get sick from it. So I'm on birth control, not caring that my libido is dead and that I've gained weight simply to not deal with that s**t anymore. Other women, however, don't want to or can't. It's just be understanding of others. Some women can't afford it, and condoms are f*****g free if you go to colleges and such to get them. Discuss it, then figure out a plan, even if that means not having any naughty times.

He replied: “I try not to think too much about consequences. Mostly I just spread my own view and opinion about certain subjects, and I don't really care if other people agree. However, reading reactions from others on topics like feminism, gay and trans rights encourages me to keep fighting harder, as they show there is still a long way to go.”
And lastly, he added: “Be kind to everyone, floss, never wear socks in your sandals, and use sunscreen when going out during summer.”

I'd have disliked the red hair to blonde, because it's an actual trait to the character. Skin color doesn't matter in case of a mermaid, it's not even a real human that would have to fit a certain time, culture or place on earth. Nonetheless, this movie was very bland and Halle Baileys acting was wasted. She could have done so much better in a less droopy movie.

Agreed. They did her badly. Since they refused to remedy anything about the really problematic story and get it closer to the message of the original fairytale, which was absolutely amazing btw. (And no, she didn't just die, but that's also not the point, but what's really important: she gave up on the prince because she realised that her silly infatuation was not true love and that the prince and the princess deserved being happy together)

From my own point of view as an African, it is not about the color of the skin. It's just about the laziness of Hollywood colourcoating instead of coming up with new ideas. If something isn't broken, don't fix. There are a lot of new culture to explore and new stories to tell but no wash and repeat. The stories that needs really attention like princess and the frog or hunchback of Notre Dame or even Brother Bear. They won't touch because they don't want to put the effort to improve on the mistakes they made then. So I don't agree with this. Not everything is racism and everyone would hate a blonde Arie.

Not necessarily a blessing to have gay parents. My step kids have a gay mother and she is the most stoic person I've ever met - does not show affection at all!! Better to wish on having parents who love deeply, affectionately and unconditionally. My mom doesn't even ask if I'm dating anyone. She knows I hang out with my friends like once every two weeks and my brother and I play video games at home. While other 19 year olds are going to collage and stuff I work at my friends Cafe early in the morning and work at another freidns flower shop late at night preparing bouquets for the next day. This one is genuinely kind of offensive. Using the Holocaust here as a way to illicit a positive reaction for your pro-choice stance is just disrespectful. I'm pro-choice myself but like the logic the argument is rooted in is also just awful. If nothing else, it may save that child from the hardships of a terrible life. Abortion the "PrOlIfE" side looks at as the death of potential, but it's the stop of potential horror. Adoption has shown to be so bad for so many kids, whether because they're stuck in an institution or abused or what have you, and if the mother is going for an abortion, she already doesn't want the fetus for one reason or another. If you were actually prolife, you'd be helping those in need, not trying to get those not born yet into a world that's disintegrating.

My husband told me he preferred my legs shaven. I said, ok, you buy the wax, since I get pimples from shaving, and you will also wax my legs and massage them with oil afterwards. He does so maybe once or twice a year. The rest he all of a sudden doesn't mind me being a furry 😆

Funny, my cats have never once complained about my unshaved legs. They're the only ones who ever see me *shrug*. Then again, if one of them did suddenly pipe up with a personal hygiene issue, I would obviously be dealing with another, quite different, issue. 😄

I dont shave, my husband doesn't care. Your partner should be fine with whatever you decide whether it's not shaving at all or shaving everything and anything in between those. If they care more about your hair than you then they don't actually love you.

They get paid for revenue generated... Here in the US, the WNBA exists only due to kind of like a welfare system from the NBA. NBA generates billions of dollars in revenue every year, the WNBA costs money to operate. I have no idea why male artists make more than female but comparing that to professional sports is ridiculous.

well, everyone puts his own price for his work. when you stop accepting lower price for your work, time and efforts... either you are good at it, and you will get the money you want; either you are bad at it, and you must look for other way to make money ! nothing to do with men and women here...

As someone who goes to art shows a lot this is not true. There are some very well known female artists who have very pricey paintings.

Well you see... what typically happens is this. A guy likes to "impress" a woman right? Most guys will agree with this statement. Therein lies the issue... and the problem with your statement. Guys will be all "I don't know how to cook but this girl is coming over will you make something for me?" ... and then pass it off as theirs... Guys will clean their apartment spotless because a girl is coming over... guys will wash their sheets because a girl is coming over... Then Once in a relationship They'll stop And all that girl wants... IS WHAT WAS ADVERTISED. The guy who cooked, and cleaned his apartment, and washed his sheets. But of course that guy didn't know how to cook, and he never cleaned, or changed his sheets... he only did it to "impress" her. So now he's bitching to his buddies that she's "trying to change" him. When he's the one that falsely advertised. And no... before you try and compare it to makeup(as that's where this ALWAYS inevitably leads to) it's not the same.

Working in dental post COVID was a trip. Patients would refuse to touch anything (pens, counters, etc). Then as soon as they got in the chair they'd paw at their phone then stick that same finger straight in their mouth 😱 .

Lmao I saw a comic the other day that had that. So there’s a dude talking to a lady, and he says, I got a nipple transplant! And she’s like, huh, and in the next panel he’s lifting his shirt and one of his nipples is censored, and he’s saying, now one of my nipples is a woman’s! And the lady cracks up and he’s like wtf

yeah. I'm super hairy and keep things trimmed, but I don't shave because I've got eczema and stupidly sensitive skin and shaving just Invites Issues. But I also never wear shorts or any tops more revealing than a t shirt, so meh. All these weird societal rules about gender and hair kinda baffle me.
