He’s been chosen. My mom has fostered kittens for over a decade and has learned how to be Most Beloved Mama to those sweet furry babies and then send them off to good homes, even though it is so so hard. Only one of our foster fails is because my mom couldn’t give the kitten away. But the very first time my dad was chosen by a kitten to be Person, he couldn’t take the thought of him going to another home. Despite my mother’s continual naysaying, we ended up keeping that kitten and his brother. My dad and that kitten are still like 🤞🏻

On paper, a cat's physical abilities and senses absolutely blow us, humans, out of the water. They need just one-sixth of the light we need to see in the dark and can blink without really affecting their vision due to a specific feature called a nictitating membrane, which might be worth remembering, it could come up during a trivia contest at any point.
Setting aside sight, cats can hear a wide range of sounds, more than humans or even dogs. They need to be able to hear ultrasonic sounds as rodents use them to communicate. Domestic cats, particularly house cats, can create mental images of where their owners are just based on sound alone, hence why it can be hard to sneak up on them.

Bouche and Audi got new bowls today. They're whisker,-friendly light blue ceramic bowls shaped like a cat's face. Audi likes to pounce bowls and knock them over. Hopefully these will be heavy enough to not spill.

There are certain myths people maintain about cats. The first is that they are solitary animals. The other counterpoint to “cats are loners” is the fact that many of them happily live with us. While they are rarely as active and social as dogs, cats do enjoy people. Similar to hunting, kittens will learn to be ok with being pet and “talked to” by seeing their mother do the same. While cat colonies are not nearly as “established” as a lion’s pride, there are certain roles the animals will take. Male cats, while somewhat absent as fathers, will break up fights among bickering females.

There is evidence to suggest that cats do understand pointing and can even follow our gaze, although, in typical cat behavior, they will understand something only when it’s particularly valuable to them. After spending some time with a person, they will also learn their facial expressions, tones of voice, and even their own name and the names of other animals.

Even friendly cats are ok being left alone for long periods, probably why they are very popular pets in urban areas. It’s worth adding that they do bring a host of benefits to their owners, from lowered chances of a heart attack to less psychological stress. As ridiculous as the behavior visible here really is, let’s face it, most of us find it pretty endearing when cats are just being weird little guys.

Step 1: Put a nice, tall (or horizontal) scratching post right next to that spot. Step 2: Encourage cat to scratch the post instead. Step 3: Pray. There's no guarantee it'll work, but it's worth a shot.

I have one of those happening right meow. Every day around 2pm. Or when his ears are cold. He gets a jacket or sweater on and then loves to be cuddled up into a blanket, lying right next to you. Because you CANNOT HOLD HIM. You have to lie on the bed and cuddle him. No other way. 😸

I can make one, two and three loops with my tongue. Pretty sure the world record is seven but at three that's better than most.
What makes them somewhat weird, beyond the antics seen here, is the fact that cats do enjoy having their own territory, free of humans or other cats, but will put up with “intrusions” because they get bored too easily. Over long periods of time, solitary cats can even “forget” how to communicate with other cats, which would probably make for a great cat sitcom if we could understand what they were talking about.

They also have a number of physical attributes that are often downright funny. Cats, or so the saying goes, always land on their feet. This is almost true, they almost always land on their feet, or at least try to, but not even millions of years of cat genetics allow them to predict every outcome. More comically, cats will also just freeze and go limp when they are grabbed by the scruff of their neck. Ostensibly so the mother can carry the kittens with ease, humans can also exploit this “loophole.”

And as much as you might think your cat loves you, always remember to feed them, since cat bonding is formed through feeding. So in a sense, they do love you, as long as you can provide. While this may sound a bit mercenary, the flip side is that this allows people to perhaps bond with wild cats or newly adopted cats, simply by placing food near them on a regular basis. Kinda like dating.

Famously, cats are also very sleepy little guys and will spend a good half to three-quarters of the day napping, particularly if we feed them. A cat in the wild, naturally, needs to hunt so will spend more time awake. Their preferred time to hunt is during the twilight period, which may explain why your house cat suddenly flies off the chain in the middle of the night with no explanation.

I'm a member of a Facebook group called "This cat is INNOCENT of all charges" and it's just a bunch of people presenting their cats to be judged and persecuted for "crimes", sometimes with and sometimes without direct evidence. So many of these posts end with: "Jury, how do you find the defendant?" etc. And in the comments, it's just dozens of people explaining how the cat is innocent EVERY SINGLE TIME. And it's just the best and it makes my day every day. This post would fit right in there.

Cat owners might also be familiar with “making biscuits” or “kneading,” when the feline massages a surface with its paws. There does not appear to be a good explanation for this behavior, just that many cats learn it as kittens and seem to retain it into adulthood. I had orange-white cat who went to lake voluntarily. Tahvo (= his name) looked like Turkish Van (the breed, not vehicle...) but had shorter fur.
He didn't swim but was wading in water as deep as he could, keeping his face above surface, tail pointing directly up like a snorkel of a submarine. Pity no pics of that has survived. IMG_202307...014e9d.jpg

I have one of these for my kitty too and Good boi I'm pretty sure it's her favorite place to hide when she wants to attack my lower extremities lol. I recently was looking for her and all of sudden she popped her head out of the middle of the triple tunnel and I thought it was hilarious 😂

Is the litter box dirty? Not enough litter in it? Did you change the box or the usual brand of litter? There’s usually a reason a cat will do this. And yes, sometimes it’s one broken down brain cell.

Some cats - like a few of mine - insist on getting as close to the edge of the litter trays to poo and wee. This has been solved by having lids on them but means that I have to regularly clean the poo that’s been plastered on the lids. One of my long gone little furry kitty used to perch of the edges of the litter tray and tip it over.

Bouche used to lie on my shower chair. She would try to lie there even after I'd gotten in and turned the water on. I'd always have to pick her up, and put her on the side of the tub so she could get out. She would get so offended.

Not a lot of people know this. In the US, if you have at least 51% of the bill, you can send it to the Mutilated Currency Redemption services (https://www.bep.gov/services/mutilated-currency-redemption) and they will replace it for you. You don't even have to sort it out and tape it together. Just bag it up and send it to them, free of charge. But you might want to let the cat drool dry out and then include a note that there was a cat involved in case someone has an allergy. (It can take between 6-36 months according to the FAQ, but you will get your money if you have 51% of the bill--conditions apply.)

You would be amazed just how long a cat can stretch itself. I’m 5’6” tall, and have had cats—-not large breed cats, but plain old mutt alley cats—-who could stretch themselves so that the tips of their paws were anywhere from my elbows to almost at my shoulders.
