Where mistakes are possible, punishment should not be irreversible. All judicial systems make mistakes. If you had your way, all men would live in constant fear of being falsely convicted of a crime they'd not committed and either kílled in error or castrated in error. Why is that okay by you, ILoveMySon?

Indi, that's not good enough. It's not okay to kíll one innocent just because you've also kílled 99 guilty people. That's why the death penalty is always wrong: miscarriages of justice are inevitable and if you've kílled someone by way of punishment, there's no way of correcting the fault. It's a far, far better idea to ensure that children are brought up well in a protective society so that few adults grow up as séxual abúsers and also so that victims were believed more often so that the séxual abúsers could be stopped sooner - tried, convicted, and given an appropriate sentence which reduced the risk of re-offending without using barbaric methods. If those conditions were met in all countries, the world would be a far, far better place - with less kílling, too.

First of all, love your way around BP's censorship. Now on the topic. We will agree to disagree. I believe it IS ok to k**l one innocent for the sake of saving 99. The justice system will never be perfect anywhere, because the human nature isn't. Humanity will never achieve the utopia that you are speaking of, no matter how great the world you painted sounds. Different countries, different traditions, norms... I don't believe that we would achieve anything even close while the world is such a diverse place. So while purely in theory I agree with you, I'm too realistic to see it as anything more than just a hope.

All fine and dandy until you or somebody you know is that 1% error. I'm good with this level of punishment but I'm not going to kid myself and say that it's fair or be that blase about killing somebody innocent.

Respectfully, if there is indisputable evidence then no innocent man will be affected. And by indisputable I mean a DNA match to semen inside the victim.

Why wrong? I 100% agree with you, killing an innocent is murder. I just don't see how what I said is wrong?

Would you be prepared to be mutilated after a false conviction as part of that small margin of error? Measure like this will do absolutely nothing to protect women. Several countries have the death penalty for r**e and yet they still have rapes, the USA has the death penalty for murder yet it's murder rate rate is still higher than 90% of countries that do not have the death penalty. Brutal punishments do not prevent crime, if it did the USA would have one of the worlds lowest murder rates instead of the 10th highest.

I would be prepared to face a 1% chance of a false conviction if it saves even 1 child from r**e. And I would just as well face mutilation as I have faced r**e. The mutilation in any event cant come with worse nightmares and trauma than r**e does. And I agree that there are certainly questions about the efficacy of the death penalty as a deterrent. But I am so fukcing pissed that we seem happy to accept that millions of children can be r***d but 1 man cant be castrated. We are tired of the fight. And no I am not serious, but occasionally I have intrusive thoughts like - lets just castrate every single f*****g man who is even ACCUSED of r**e. Maybe then we are closer to the balance of fear and trauma that women and children experience every single f*****g day of their lives. Maybe then men will start taking r**e seriously.

No, what we can do is increase the efficiency of the courts and improve police training. The conviction rate for r**e is very low across the world. Instead of lowering the burden of proof, which will just result in more wrongful convictions, we train the police better so they are better at getting evidence. We change the culture around r**e through education so that victims feel more comfortable about reporting rapes and most importantly, we stop blaming the victim. Nobody, ever deserves to be r***d no matter what they are wearing, what they drink or who they interact with.

I agree with all of that Martin. Every word. And we have been doing that for 20 years and to be fair we suck at it. Very little progress has been made, girls are still blamed, men are still let off with light punishment if anything at all, and in the meantime 25% of girls continue to be assaulted before they are 18. Several children die from being violently r***d every year. At what point is the tipping scale? At what point does a 25% chance of a child being r***d outweigh the less than 1% chance of a false conviction?

Indi, Canada's criminal law works well. The country's got sensible laws, courts which operate free from interference, and all the rest of the things you need to protect the innocent. Vigilantes in the sense of this post are criminals who need locking up to protect the rest of us.

No. It doesn't work well. I'm glad that you only had a positive experience with it, but I didn't. On a few occasions. So no, you are wrong. My experience tells me you are wrong.

Just because you had a bad experience doesn't prove anything about the general case. Canada's criminal law works as well or better than the criminal law in most other nations. It's not perfect - of course not. And like the law everywhere, it does a very bad job with the victims of séxual abuse - but that doesn't mean there's any excuse to support vigilantism. That sort of thing just makes things worse - you get innocent people assaulted and sometimes múrdered through being mistakenly suspected of paedophilia. The solution is to make the application of the law work better, not to support the kílling of innocent people who are mistakenly suspected of wrong-doing.

Kílling people is wrong. I remain baffled at the way so many people think it's okay to just go around m-u-r-d-e-r-i-n-g people they suspect of committing certain crimes. That sort of thinking ends up with - well, let's see, here's a man who's been falsely identified as a paedophile quite recently: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/aug/20/family-in-fear-after-tommy-robinson-shares-video-of-black-man-with-white-granddaughters. You see the issue here? Your way of thinking would have this kind and caring grandfather shot dead for taking his grandchildren to the park.
