Some things are so normal in our society that we don’t even think about it, just accept it the way it is. But the minute you start thinking about it, you realize how questionable it is. And that if people wouldn’t have normalized such a thing, we definitely would understand it to be a scam.

Today, let’s take a look at some money-related things that would be considered scams if society hadn’t normalized them.

Ughhhh! I bumped a curb and bent my rim. I called Progressive to use my ROADSIDE assistance to tow it home because I didn't want to file claim for something so small. Plus I have a $400 deductible so it would be pointless. Well I stupidly told them I bumped the curb so they made me use my collision coverage. Cost $421 to fix and now my insurance is up $80 a month. So pissed. So f*****g pissed. Scam artists

Yes, BUT, coming from someone who worked for an agent, people don't want to pay for proper insurance or understand what it covers. They just want to pay the least amount possible and expect the best coverage when the time comes. I have seen it WAY too many times.

I can understand. Where I live, what health insurance will and won't cover is very clearly stated in the insurance package details. If it's covered, it's covered, after your deductible. When my mom got sick, everything aside from a few painkillers was covered, no questions asked. Health insurance is expensive, but if you ever break a bone or need to get hospitalized, you're happy it'll cover the bulk of the cost.

IMO insurance should be pay per month, and they have to give you a base amount based on how long you were paying.

If insurance companies give you any $$ at all. Also, insurance companies can change your policy without notifying you. They can, will and have changed ppl's policies just to get out of paying you what you're misled into believing is yours

Paying a warranty or insurance is betting that something bad WILL happen that would cost more than all your premiums. Which very rarely happens. Stop betting against yourself!

I use my parents as an example because I’m a millennial and will unlikely ever be able to buy a house. My parents have a beautiful home they built on 20 acres in Montana. In the 30 years since they have been paying an exorbitant amount of home insurance just in case. They have never, thankfully, had a need to use it until last summer. There was a severe hail storm that damaged the cedar siding on 2 sides. Estimate to repair was $10,000. Insurance offered $1500. 30 years and paying tens of thousands and they can’t get the money to repair it?

Yeah....that's kind of what happens when governments go trillions into debt while servicing the public. The US government spent $4.9 TRILLION on covid related ($1 trillion of which was those stimulus payments everyone was so grateful for) When something like this happens, Interest rates go up, and as a result, everyone, including companies are less likely to take out loans to cover operating costs.....meaning prices....go up! And all those "record profits" seen during covid, were due to consumers having to spend less money on things like gas and transport and instead spending it on other things! Like electronics, and subscriptions, and streaming, and cloths and a whole bunch of things they did not need, but wanted to stave off boredom.

Bored Panda reached out to sociologist Deborah Lupton. Check out her blog

We asked her what factors contribute to social acceptance of morally questionable things. She answered that it is all due to social norms and their changeability. “Behaviors once considered normal became socially repugnant and people were expected to adhere to these new norms to be considered socially acceptable. It is often the wealthy and powerful who influence others (for good or for worse).”

So, we can guess that it’s only a matter of time before we start to question certain financial and social norms of today. And then they will change into something else.

It may be the bank that is forcing op's landlord to do this. I've been to some stores that charge more if you're using a card, to offset what the bank is charging them. Some fuel stations do this as well. It's a ripoff, I admit, but it may not be 100% the landlord.

30 Scams That Are So Normalized That We Don’t Realize We’re Being Tricked Landlords buy up property they don’t need so they can sell it back at an extreme markup as rent to people who actually do need it. With almost any other commodity it would be called scalping, and be regarded as the scam that it is, but with a commodity so material we literally call it “real estate”, we just act like this is how things are supposed to be.

If I were to win/receive a lot of money, I'd buy up low cost property. This would be refurbished into good housing for people on low incomes. The aim would be to provide good quality, stable homes for people who are normally priced out of the market. If a profit was possible, it would be used to buy more property, and help people enter an agreement where they can start building equity.

What is insane is what homes are selling for. Here in Western Montana, there are many of the "kit homes" from the 1930's-50s that originally sold for <$6-7k, now sell for $500k+. Most are less than 1000 sq/ft on 1/4 acre lots. Many were built by various timber and mining companies for employee housing, nothing fancy about these places. It's ridiculous.

House recently sold on my street. Housing market is bad because of high interest rates. Owner was moving out of state so they ended up accepting a low-ball offer $70,000 less than the what they were asking (which was already on the low end of home prices in my city). New owners immediately put the house up for rent, at nearly double the going rate...it's been sitting empty for 6 months now.

Never understood the Americans calling it "real estate". The use of the term "real" in the description/title suggests that theres also a market for fake estate that they needed to differentiate themselves from. Doesnt matter what its called though, its definitely a scam as described in the post.

The rent in your area is based on the income in your area. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. It would be completely unfair for someone making $15 an hour to pay the same rent as someone making $8 an hour.

We also asked her how socially accepted morally questionable things reflect the cultural values and society itself. The sociologist replied that “What is considered socially acceptable and 'normal' in any society at any historical period is reflective of broader social issues and expectations, as well as those who are in power as leaders of moral standards at the time."

She added that in societies where religious values are no longer as strong, it usually takes over. “It means that the wealthy and those who control the reins of power in government are the moral authorities.” And well, talking about wealth really does match our topic today.

Got fed up with the expense of cartridges, their short life, and the continuing hassles with trying to make the printer work properly. Like a lot of things, it takes a little getting used to, but chances are that you don't need a printer as much as you might imagine.

Why are you all hating on each other? They're just some goddamn devices that have no meaning. Some phones have different features and that's okay. Instead of hating on others, be happy that you have something. I personally use an IPhone 11 and have no problem with it. Not to mention, at least us Apple users can access the BP app without any problems whatsoever.

I don't have any issues with accessing the BP app from my droid... Motorola G Stylus...my only complaint is that the consumer is being Nickeled and Dimed on top of being Dollared nearly to death! With Corporations, Manufacturers, placing the highest pricing on the lowest amount of quality while pushing the quantity to the consumer! In addition to the aforementioned, common theft is an immobilizer. Especially with the newest theft trends. Grab n dash?! Smash n grab?! Thievery is so NOT trendy! Oh but so many humans think looting funny to the point of encouraging their kids while recording their next hopefully viral video to post on social media because these humans think of themselves as "cool" NOT...(sigh) there I've said it and if anyone out there doesn't understand my rant - than you are the problem. But don't be hating on one another. Because that is as big of an issue as the global pollution

All workers should be paid a living wage! Giving tipped workers absurdly low pay is downright criminal, and makes them depend on customers who give a rat's behind. BP has had posts about stingy tippers and snarky messages on receipts.

Tipping culture is out of control. People are already leaving no tips because of the frustration. An old phrase comes to mind. "They are cutting off their nose to spite their face." By demanding more and more, they'll end up with nothing

I never understood lowering waitstaff pay to $2-3 dollars and making staff make up the difference by tips to get to minimum wage. That needs to be corrected. However, figuring out automatic tips that show up on your bill is being pushy &, to me. rude. Now everyone wants to be tipped. Fast food workers, garage attendants, grocery clerks, dry cleaners, etc.

It’s not the tipping itself that’s the problem, it’s the system that’s developed that relies on the direct subsidization of the workers by the consumer.

We never had this problem in the Netherands. You get a minimum wage or a living wage, but this disease flew over the Atlantic and now I sometimes see a bank space where you can write up some tips. This all came from that third world country of the US of A where people don't get paid properly for the work they do. All victims of the race to the bottom. If that is called being Dutch then I'm extremely proud to be Dutch.

Moving on to actual financial scams, do you know how to identify one? Well, these tips can come in handy when you encounter something you guess might be a financial scam. Watch out for:

    • Fake ads that claim that a celebrity recommends it to make big money.
    • An online contact you have never met in person talking about investing.
    • Ads, websites, or even emails with testimonials and over-the-top promises.
    • High-pressure tactics that are meant to rush you to act so you don't 'miss out'.
    • Being asked to promote the scheme to friends and family to earn a commission.

So, take these tips and your common sense into consideration and stay safe from financial scams!

I can understand a subscription for support and quality of life updates. But this stuff is already so expensive, you should have a lifetime license for that version. Company stops patching that version and goes on to the next, fine. Let me use the old one i already paid for, don't force me into a subscription model and tell me the benefit is I always have the newest version

30 Scams That Are So Normalized That We Don’t Realize We’re Being Tricked buying schoolbooks. publishers know you have literally no choice but to buy it and jack up the price in many cases. And some teachers get a cut on those sales which is insanely scummy but somehow tolerated in many schools. I’ve had classes where you had to pay 150$ for a book we didn’t even use once during the class, but you literally couldn’t do any of the online evaluations unless you bought it. It’s just a way for some company to make an easy 500-600 dollars or more off the back of students.

Here it’s called an overdraw fee (overdrafts used to be a kind of loan arrangement) and fees for overdrawn accounts were banned in Australia a few years ago. Completely unethical to charge people fees of $30-$40 when their account overdraws by one or two bucks. It disproportionally impacted the people who could afford it the least.

I remember a phone store adding a zero on the price of a phone (they weren't even supposed to charge me at the time anyway.) They screwed up the refund and charged me a second time the correct price which they also had to refund me. Banks used to pay out in order of price instead of time the charge occurred and processed credits last. By the time everything settled, the bank had bounced so many things (as low as $15) that I had to pay $180 in fees and they said there was nothing they could do...

Almost everything in your house is made in China. Even the car you drive parts on it are made in China. The clothes you wear probably made in China. The bed you sleep in. The phone you're talking on now made in China, the computer made in china. Sorry to bust your bubble. Your kids toys. Some of your appliances. So sell everything made in China that you own and see how that works out for you.

Explain why. The plastic media the game is stored on costs a few pennies to manufacture, the plastic case they're housed in a few pennies more. You're not paying for the packaging, you're paying for the artistic expression inside it. Something that took dozens to hundreds of people years and 10's or 100's of million of dollars to create, and 10's or 100's more market and advertising. Now aside from that....digital copies incur the added cost of servers, electricity costs to run them, the bandwidth costs of delivering the content, to any device, at any time, anywhere in the world. So....i'll say again, explain what logical explanation you've come up with to justify that "muuuuuch cheaper"

(In the US) I work and have decent insurance. Got a nose bleed my local clinic couldn't stop. Went to the ER - Nearly $5k (of which I had to pay nearly $1500). They used some name-brand nose--spray (an anti-coagulant), and when that didn't work, inserted an inflatable tampon (that fell out 2 hours later). Why so high? Apparently, while I was bent over bleeding into a bedpan, a "specialist" literally stuck his head in the door to ask how it was going.

I bet EVERY single American would pay an extra quarter for every dollar if they got what most of the other world has. I've read some absolute horror stories about the US health system. And the issue here is not the hospital bill. It is the insurance companies. Get rid of the damned insurance companies, pay a couple cents on the dollar a month for universal health care, so that everyone can access it without panicking about getting a $5,000 bill for a simple nosebleed. Every other westernized country knows how to accomplish it. It's the insurance companies who are fighting tooth and nail against it, because of the vast profits they're making. So they call it communism, which is a joke, but they'll convince you it is because they refuse to lose all that money.

We do not have that, thankfully. Here it is the opposite. It is best if you never had any loans. If you want to get a loan or buy something big on kredit, they can look up if you ever had problems paying something off or if you have outstanding debts. If you have/ had, then they can deny the loan.

I have bought and used extended warranties several times. I had a dining room table replaced because we scratched it accidentally and it could be repaired due to the finish. I had a vacuum replaced under extended warranty. I just had a 4 year old laser printer replaced under extended warranty. I had my clothes dryer motor replaced under extended warranty. You have to understand the warranty, keep the paperwork and remember that you paid for the warranty.

I purchased a used car from a very reputable dealership. When they offered me an extended warranty, they went through it in extreme detail so I could make an informed decision. I did end up buying the warranty, a five year, and about a year later had my entire dashboard start to fail. Cost me nothing to fix. Over the duration of the warranty it paid for itself several times. It even covered tow trucks and rental cars. So not all warranties are scams but some definitely are.

The thing about the lottery is that it's a choice. You don't have to play. Everyone knows the odds are absurdly long. But here's the kicker that people forget. For $3, you get a bit of fun imagining how it would be. You talk with others about it, you image what you would do, you plan how to quit your job, whatever. That's the real value. It's fun of dreaming about what if. Every time I see a post on what's a scam, someone drops in the lottery. But they don't understand what the real payoff is for your $3. And for 1 or 2 people, that dream does come true. I think the lottery, when played responsibly, is great. You just have to understand the real payoff.

Most of us are leading lives of quiet desperation, usually because we don't have the contacts or social skills to get a leg up in life. The lottery has to be won sometime by somebody, and I would rather have a slim chance of winning big (allowing me to give the finger to the world) than a reasonable chance of winning a modest amount that at the end of the day still requires me to be a working stiff

So upset the gerrymandering by getting all the voters in a district that don't normally vote to do so. It'll skew everything they thought they knew about that district

Not quite. There was a cartel formed to standardise light bulbs, including their lifespan, but the longer-lasting bulbs at the time were undesirable because of lower efficiency (as in light output per power input) and greater heat output, so it wasn't as simple as this makes out.

30 Scams That Are So Normalized That We Don’t Realize We’re Being Tricked Interest rates in banking, or just banking in general. They literally use your money to lend other people money so they can charge then interest, making them money with your money. What's worse is that in times of crisis they can just declare bankruptcy and that's it, they don't owe you anything and you're s**t outta luck, even if they lost literally all your life savings. Also they force you to get a credit card if you want to apply for a loan, banking is just scams on top of scams.

If they didn't do this how would they pay anyone? If all they did was hold your money for you they'd have crazy fees. The building costs money, the teller needs to be paid, the off-site servers and ATMs need maintenance. Many of a bank's services are free for members and all they want is to use your money while you aren't, seems like a good deal to me. But yes, the fact that the bank can fail and I just lose by money is dumb.

The whole point of a bank, is that they're federally backed. That way it doesn't matter if they "declare bankruptcy" your money is insured. By the government. They "force" you to get a credit card, to prove that YOU are responsible with money before they loan you hundreds of thousands of dollars. If you can't figure out how to charge $1-$200 a month on your credit card, and pay it off at the end of the month, you're probably not going to be able to handle paying off hundreds or thousands in the form of a mortgage. Yes, they use "your" money for loans....because they also will invest YOUR money should you be smart enough to take advantage of it. They also pay varying rates of interest in return for this, but again you actually have to make an effort to educate yourself so as to better take advantage of all the tools at your disposal. That you do not, is not the fault of the business providing a service.

30 Scams That Are So Normalized That We Don’t Realize We’re Being Tricked >I'll start: paying for water You're not paying for water, per se. You're paying for *treated* water. Tap water is filtered, purified, and tested. Bottled water is ... bottled. Either way, some work has been done to it, and that is the value-added portion of the water which you're paying for. You are welcome to go down to the lake and drink out of it for free. Good luck with that, by the way.

Paying for water/power makes sense, they have to maintain the delivery systems (pipes/wires) and the filtration or power plants. The BS part is that if you own a house you have to have utilities or the city can penalize you, and even if you don't use those utilities, just having an account costs every month. 30 Scams That Are So Normalized That We Don’t Realize We’re Being Tricked Pyramid schemes (you'd think by now people would easily recognize them) There's some that do actually make you money but you'd have to have a cold heart for it. I had these 2 high school friends who were a couple. Totally normal people. After high school we kept in touch and would get together often on weekends. One day though they started sending us these invitations on fb or text to go to some meeting about some new energy drinks or protein idk. We wouldn't answer as we just didn't feel right about it. On Facebook we would see they posted a lot, but I mean dozens of posts a day about joining thir team and how they would be selling a lot and the awards they were given for being top sellers etc. Turns out that they never sold any drinks. They would just go around recruiting people to sell them while charging them to join the team because they would help them with advertising and with distribution. They did make money apparently but over getting people to join knowing it was a bs product and it would probably not sell at all. They made money off those people joining. Not sales of the product. But they spent time and effort on that gig. It went on for a while but like expected, they aren't doing it anymore. But we don't talk to them as much because their insisting emails and dms sort of became annoying and we started to ignore them.

No, this is the *opposite* of a scam. All this stuff about psychology is bollocks. The reason everything costs a penny under a round amount is so the cashier has to open the till to make change. If the till's opened, the sale is logged, so the cashier can't just pocket the note and pretend the sale never happened. It's an anti-theft measure. Any psychological effect is a happy bonus.

Excessive mark up on medication required for survival should be illegal. Denying someone access to that medication should also be illegal. If the manufacturer is so worried about how to cover the cost, have them look at the salaries of the C-suite (CEO, CFO, COO, CMO, etc). Then move onto the vice presidents and managers. Plenty of wiggle room in no time.

Do you expect to pay taxes on any other purchase each year after you buy that thing? I'm assuming you don't. How ignorant can people really be? Your property taxes pay for the public services that you don't even acknowledge. Like...oh off the top of my head, funding your public schools, police, fire, EMS, roads, water...ya know all the parts of the city/town that are owned and operated by the city/town. Part of the reason that so many of these things suck, is because absolutely no one pays adequate taxes....because they think they're a scam, and somehow just entitled to everything they want on the expectation that they "deserve" them...but somehow simultaneously believe that everything they do should be valued higher financially.

Any tax - property, income, sales, etc. - is based on something you own.

We pay a bit over $10,000 in property taxes each year for a 3 bedroom 1.5 bathroom modest house. It's crazy in NJ/USA.

What he's saying is that Wall Street uses funds that are in pension funds to pay for investments that are high risk. The money is then lost and people who are relying on the pension money are left screwed.
