Every generation goes through a unique set of joys and challenges, and millennials are in no way an exception. Born somewhere between 1981 and 1996, they have lived through numerous significant events in history that shaped them into the thirty/forty-somethings we know and cherish today. For example, they’ve witnessed the rise of the internet, which is one of the reasons they’re typically quick to adapt to new technology (at the same time cherishing memories of burning their favorite songs onto a CD).

We have delved into the depths of the internet to find posts that ought to be relatable to any millennial out there. Shared on the subreddit titled exactly that—’Millennials’—they cover everything from their daily struggles now to nostalgia-filled memories about life back in the day, and much more. Scroll down to find the internet pearls on the list below and enjoy.

Seeking to understand what being a millennial is all about, Bored Panda reached out to Senior Associate Dean and Director of the BBA Program in Emory’s Goizueta Business School, Andrea Hershatter. She was kind enough to share her insight on the topic, which you will find in the text below.

A fellow Gen Xer was shocked that a kid couldn’t identify any Michael Jackson songs. But Thriller, the album that made Jackson a household name, is 41 years old now. I was 11. Imagine a fifty-year-old in 1982 being surprised that an 11-year-old was unfamiliar with the Glenn Miller Orchestra or Bing Crosby.

Typically the millennial years are considered to be 1981-1996; however, sometimes the period is more loosely defined as 1980 to 2000. Born during the final decades of the millennium—hence, the name—the representatives are sometimes referred to as the generation of the Internet Age, as the internet’s official birth date falls on January 1st, 1983.

Another technology-based term that is used to describe millennials is digital natives. It applies to people who grew up in the presence of digital technology or in the information age, and millennials are considered to be the first generation of such.

“The first digital natives to enter the workforce use technology as an embedded ‘6th sense’ as opposed to a ‘tool’ like older generations,” Senior Associate Dean and Director of the BBA Program in Emory’s Goizueta Business School, Andrea Hershatter, told Bored Panda.

There's the opposite reaction, though - overpriced pet food with ingredients that sound good to human but have zero nutritional value, and lack ingredients that have been vilified for PR reasons but are actually nutritious.

According to WhatIs, digital natives grew up with the technology which became fundamental to people’s social, educational, and professional lives. With millennials being the flag bearers, the generations that follow are bound to fall under the same term as well, as technology gets more deeply rooted in our everyday lives. (Statista’s data shows that the percentage of people using the internet in the US, for instance, grew from 43% back in 2000 to nearly 92% in 2023.)

That might be one of the reasons representatives of the 1981-1996 generation stand out as avid technology users. Pew Research Center revealed that more than nine-in-ten millennials are smartphone owners, and nearly as many of them (86%, to be exact) are social media users.

Growing up in the Internet Age, it is no surprise that the majority of millennials foster a positive view towards the net. Pew Research Center pointed out that as much as 73% of them agree that the internet has had a positive impact on society (compared to 63% of representatives of the Silent Generation, for instance). It also unveiled that nearly 100% of millennials use the internet nowadays.

Wondering too. I live in one of the poor European countries but we still have free education, free healthcare, ALL legal jobs include national insurance otherwise the employer is illegal and even though our minimum wage is lower than 12$ per hour our living costs are much lower too. Like I can rent an average house for 350€...Ah I can also have an abortion if the need arises and none has a gun except for cops who do not tend to shoot people, regardless of their skin color...just saying....

Well we are exceeding the Earths carrying capacity for life it can support and choosing not to have children is better then, oh say all the problems that come with overpopulation or regulating reproductive rights out of existence. We are seriously blowing our time on this planet in comparison to all the other species to have called this place home. I think we humans need to chill on the breeding for a minute and if people volunteer as tribute I say we celebrate them.

There are sooooo many people on this planet. Why do we need to replace people one for one at this point? I think our species will be A-OK if every x amount of people who die are replaced by x-1 babies…. Then I’m sure there will be years the replacement rate will hold steady. Human extinction or even to half our current population is not a concern bc of this fact. Let them not have kids. Geeez. Get off their backs!

OK, but back in MY time (1960s), that was the ONLY option! Also, only if you were wealthy enough to actually rent a landline telephone! If the phone rang, someone RAN to answer it! I remember the excitement in our household when we finally had the (ONE) phone connected! Very rich parents of a schoolfriend had TWO phones!

Honestly I think there's room for both text and voice. Sometimes it's nice to hear the other person's voice. Sometimes you want to be sure it's the right person or you need to *know* that they got the message *now* rather than potentially someone else reading the text or it going unseen for hours. And sometimes it's just easier to talk because a complex conversation can be had in a few minutes instead of taking 50 texts spread over an hour. Conversely, I like texts for less important messages where they're not time sensitive. Or sending details like address, time to meet etc. since it's viewable later. And they're great if you know the person is busy at work or in a class since you can leave the message and (hopefully) they'll get to it when they're free. It bugs me when people *always* just use one method but not the other.

I am soooo annoyed at this one friend (who acts like a boomer... but is actually a Gen-X)... who INSISTS on calling to talk instead of text.. or even email (no, it's not an emergency.. it's literally "hey, what's up") - and this person can **NEVER** hear me.. the entire thing is "WHAT? huh??? Hey, you cut out... it's noisy here... what'd you say??" - and I'm like... this would really have been a more positive experience if you texted... yet.. they still refuse...

Am I the only one that doesn't agree? I find calls much more practical as I can just put the phone on speaker and carry on with what I'm doing.. Also, it's much easier to avoid misunderstandings and much faster than having to type (and then they reply, and you gotta type again.. communication is just slower like that). I find texting great to just communicate something quick like "the party is at 8pm, we are wearing pink".. but if it's a conversation, voice calls are a million times better to me

When your generation prattles on about "back in my day we could buy a house making $40k and still live comfortably..." y'all seem to forget that houses aren't $60k anymore. Even worse, now y'all are selling those $60k houses for north of $1M in some parts of the US. So yeah, your generation gets the blame.

No one thing or person effd up the economy. Every industry, company and ceo that put profits before people contributed. Mortgage lenders and appraisers inflated home prices so that ownership is no longer attainable for, well most people. Every time one of us has worked a s****y job with a deplorable boss and hostile environment makes the prospect of getting what used to pass for conventional work not even kind of desirable. Hustle culture anyone? Even you and me..for democracy, community or even just a tolerable work space to exist with a livable wage we must PARTICIPATE. No more blame..just solutions

Fact check: Millenials are not the only ones struggling to survive. There are people 75+ years old still working because, after working their entire lives, being productive members of society, contributing to their 401K's, being taxed for Social Security, they are only receiving the bare minimum of retirement benefits. Put the blame where it belongs: greedy politicians who receive free healthcare for life a salary raises every year, pharmaceutical companies that increase drug prices to the point that they are unaffordable, health insurance companies that deny life-saving drugs and medical treatments, and secondary educational institutions that force students into life-long debt so they can earn degrees for minimal salaries. Oh, and lest we forget the oil companies that are making record profits while the majority of the workforce must choose between gas for work, food for the family, or prescriptions to survive.

The GWI report revealed that staying up to date with current events and looking for funny or entertaining content are two of the main reasons millennials use social media. They also do it to kill time, see what their friends are up to, and share their photos and videos.

The report also pointed out that the accounts people follow on social media tend to depend on the user’s gender. When it comes to millennials, male representatives focus most on gaming bloggers, sports stores, and entrepreneurs, while their female counterparts follow beauty, food, and fitness bloggers the most.

True. I bought a 3 bedroom house with my wife in 1980 for $47,000. (BTW, neither of us was on a minimum wage job.) I really feel for you, but it is not MY fault that house prices are stratospheric while incomes are pathetic. There is also nothing I can do about it now, as we are also struggling with the increasing cost of living as well.

I think as long as you don't ridicule others for not having what you had, then you aren't part of the problem. It sucks to struggle and then be mocked for it. What bugs me even more is pitting generations against each other because it gets higher ratings or clicks.

Not quite true. Minimum wage has never been enough to buy a house. It bought more in the 70s than it does now, but not a house.

Also not quite the point. According to what I can find, it should have taken about 14,625 hours of federal minimim wage labor to buy a single family new home in 1970, compared to 33,806 in 2001. https://www.huduser.gov/periodicals/ushmc/winter2001/histdat08.htm and https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/minimum-wage/history/chart. The point is that, while not everyone in a generation has benefited equally, the system has ceratinly been more favorable to some generations compared to others. (Edit: spelling)

Still a few years from retirement, so let's hope the little pension is enough to survive. Seeing tech develop has been amazing all these years though. The thing about working a minimum wage job is that if you give 2 shites about doing a good job you get promoted to more than minimum wage in a short timeframe. Those of you struggling to progress past entry level work have an entry level mindset.

I don't think it's just people with entry level jobs having a hard time. My husband and I both have professional careers and only homes we could afford were in very dangerous areas, one had no kitchen, one was infested. We lived in a 2 bedroom apartment. People with entry level jobs can't even afford the apartment nowadays.

Millennials ought to comprise quite a large chunk of internet users, considering that back in 2019, they surpassed Baby Boomers in number and became the largest living generation in the US. According to Statista, back in 2022 there were roughly 72.24 million millennials nationwide.

Also known as Generation Y, people born between 1981 and 1996 were preceded by the Greatest Generation (1901-1924), the Silent Generation (1925-1945), the Baby Boomer Generation (1946-1964), and Generation X (1965-1979). The ones that follow consist of only Generation Z (1995-2012) and Gen Alpha (2013-2025) so far.

Andrea Hershatter told Bored Panda that communication across generations differs by content, style, and modality. “The older the generation, the more verbally complex and detailed the communication, and the more ‘old school’ the mechanisms. So, from oldest to youngest, Boomers communicate most often via email with lots of words, and Gen Z is most likely to communicate in atemporal, immediate, succinct and visual modalities like TikTok. Also and obviously, cultural references differ.”

Each generation is affected by different historical circumstances, rapid change in technology and environment, and other factors. So, it’s no surprise that representatives of each one of them have not only different styles of communication, but qualities, views, or goals in life as well.

Pew Research Center analyzed how adult millennials differ compared to adults of preceding generations, which revealed that they are better educated and tend to delay or forgo marriage more than their predecessors. In addition to that, it also pointed out that representatives of Gen Y have brought more racial and ethnic diversity to American society.

According to Andrea Hershatter, millennials are the “Generation (thus far) most likely to complete college education and statistically most likely to choose a major based on career prospects (as opposed to based on meaning, fulfillment, etc.).

“They are also the generation in whom the highest percentage of their family's discretionary income was invested in education, experiences, and enrichment, thus setting up very high expectations and pressure for their future success,” she added.

Intergenerational differences might be one of the reasons for the formation of stereotypes; and like any other generation, millennials boast a fair share of them, too. In Andrea Hershatter’s opinion, some of them could be argued, though. “They are fragile and can't deal with derailment,” she took as an example. “This is false: millennials have already proven themselves to be incredibly resilient and fully capable of reimagining and reinventing their careers and futures.”

“They are entitled and expect too much from the workplace. This is a misunderstanding. Throughout their education, including in college, millennials became accustomed to a willingness on the part of institutions to grant accommodations that would enable them to perform at their highest capacity. I personally believe that when they ask for similar concessions in the workforce they are simply seeking an environment where they can best contribute to the task at hand.

“They cannot deal with ambiguity. This is partially true. In terms of handling what life throws at them, millennials seem to be pretty comfortable with uncertainty and a reasonable amount of moving outside their comfort zones and risk-taking. However, two things are also true: 1) Their willingness to take risks is calculated against cost of failure (in a much more clearly analyzed and cautious way than it was for Gen X) and 2) They have very low tolerance for ambiguous expectations or assignments. They want to understand the explicit and implicit rules of any workplace culture and to know exactly what is needed,” the expert, Andrea Hershatter explained.

Yes. And I admire the hell out of that generation of Americans. But guess who profited off of THAT generation's difficulties and efforts to make their kids' lives better than their own?...boomers. And the later 70s, 80s and 90s were a f****n cake walk for boomers. No big wars, no big recessions. Just make money and cruise. It's different now, it just is. Some generations are lucky and others aren't.

I had a right old barney with an Amazon delivery guy because I don’t have any sort of photo ID. He wouldn’t acknowledge a letter from the NHS which had my date of birth on it. All this fuss over a tiny bottle of Limoncello. Kept banging on about how he’d lose his job if I couldn’t prove my age. Maybe, but he was probably the type of guy who only uses satnav and denies the existence of printed maps. In the end told him to shove it somewhere where no object should go and take it back to the Amazon depot.

When it comes to relationships and family life, millennials seem to take a slower approach, especially in regards to marriage. Data shows that back in 2019, less than half of them (44%) were married, compared to 53% of Gen X representatives, 61% of Baby Boomers, and 81% of the Silent Generation at a comparable age. Moreover, only roughly 33% of millennials live with a spouse and a child, while out of Gen Xers, for instance, 40% did at the same age.

Family life and technology use are far from the only things that differ with each generation. There are noticeable differences when it comes to food, for instance, from people’s eating to shopping habits. Data presented by Gitnux revealed that millennials are 50% more likely than other generations to regularly use online shopping for getting their groceries. In addition to that, over half of them consider themselves to be foodies, which explains a millennial’s love for an occasional visit to a restaurant (where they reportedly spend 44% of their budget for food).

When it comes to all things food, Gen Yers are also known to be in favor of plant-based meals, with as much as 63% of them trying to include it in their diets, according to Gitnux. That’s likely one of the reasons why this generation consumes 2.3% less meat than the older ones. In addition to that, they are quite health-conscious and likely to introduce healthy food options to their children.

You always had that one school across town that seemed to align with your school district's reasoning on snow days, so if you saw their name come up, you'd know 95% chance yours is coming up next. But then also you'd have other schools that you'd see and think "well, they ALWAYS call off, that doesn't mean anything."

Yay! So you can help perpetuate this shít cycle! Housing collapse, people with some money buy up foreclosures and then rent them at the current insane inflation rate to the people who can't get on their feet. Or tear down the house you bought and build tiny apartments so you can bleed as many people as possible. Good for you! Cuz you don't need just one house, you need to own multiple and leech off those who can't manage to get one. Goals! /s

Only those who lived through the depression, including my parents, would understand this. My beloved grandmother went from a luxurious home in Bendigo, with servants, to a cold one bedroom flat in Prahran in Melbourne Victoria. However, she coped, and loved me and looked after me so well until I was five, that I remember her and the flat vividly. I still miss her over 60 years later! Nobody is perfect, but she was one of the most amazing people I ever met.

At least they don't know what they're missing if they never had anything to begin with, right? I'm noticing your every comment on this thread wreaks of the privilege you never knew, and still don't comprehend, that you had/have.

Boot cut jeans are flattering, they look far better on me than skinny jeans.

There are loads of flats going up around our area and they all say “starting from 600k!” Who are all the hundreds of people who have that to drop on a one bed?

Seriously!! I have a good job and am decently paid, but everything is still out of my price range. How is anyone buying anything right now? Are they all secret millionaires?

Image of entitlement??? Seriously??? Have you seen homepages lately? Starter homes in my area start in the mid500k range! And I'm in what considered one of the most affordable housing markets in the country! Seriously, a housing market crash would get me out of my falling apart house to a somewhat nice basic house.

And when they start buying homes, the prices will go up again.

Fingers crossed! Only climbing higher here :( sorry but Montana is full. Besides can you really tolerate 9 months of winter and 3 months of road construction. Oh and Bears..yes they will walk right up to you, snatch ya out your bed.

Idaho girl, here! I feel the exact same way. Please stop coming here. The lowest sale price for a literal dump of a two bedroom fixer upper is 300,000, and those are few and far between. Only 20% of households can afford to buy the lowest sale price being offered. The average Idaho household income- that's average, not low income- can afford nothing, absolutely nothing. Then, the new arrivals have the audacity to complain about the weather. You didn't know it snows in May? Well, it does. If you don't like it, move along. We only have two seasons. 7-8 months of winter, then, for some inexplicable reason, hot as hells front door.

Had is it “entitlement” to have no chance in hell of owning a home unless there is a crash?

The Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter movies are pretty nostalgic, though... reminders of simpler times.

No ok my little brother actually made us watch the old Super Mario movie (he has a love for weird movies, and it did not disappoint) before we went to see the new one. I’d recommend watching the old one, it’s a roller coaster from start to finish

This came out in my early 20's when I worked for a daycare, even the 2 year olds knew it was messed up and wouldn't eat it!

People born in 1994? What is your problem? I was born 40 years previously and would KILL to be you! That would make me 28 and in my prime when I could still pick up. These days I cannot even get it up. I hate old age.

You know they make a bunch of different meds to help you. You don't need to go incorporating your erectile dysfunction into random memes. They have forums elsewhere for your issues. Go there with that information.

I don't think all the parents would say it's 'ruined' their retirement. Most give their children money of their own free will and are happy to do so because they were lucky enough to have more security than their children. For example, my parents were selling their house to move somewhere else anyway, so when they had left over money from the sale and new house cost, they were able to lend us some for house deposits. They already had money to live off, as they had superannuation etc.

Thank you! Nobody was forcing them out of their money. If they choose to give more than they should, why is the recipient suddenly responsible for that adult's choices?

At least they have retirements to ruin. In our economy, most of us don't have the option to save for one.

Technically a lot of people DO have the option to save for retirement....but they choose to live like normal people and have a rich full life with the children they create. So shame on everyone for wanting to grow a family, no retirement for you! /s
