“How Mental”: 30 Hilarious Memes For Anyone Struggling To Stay Sane
Interview With ExpertHalf of the world’s population will develop a mental health disorder in their lifetime. That’s according to a large-scale international study published last year. Researchers interviewed 150,000 people across 29 countries to arrive at their findings. They revealed that most common struggles are mood disorders, like depression or anxiety. The World Health Organization adds that there are already hundreds of millions of people living with a mental health disorder.
Thankfully, a lot is being done to break the stigma. People are speaking up about their personal experiences with mental health disorders. There’s more awareness, education, and resources available. "How Mental" is an Instagram page dedicated to sharing relatable memes about mental health. It has over 832,000 followers and as the founder puts it, "The Mental Movement ~ is here to help you take care of the most important part of you: Your Mind."
Keep scrolling for a list of Bored Panda's personal favorites from the page and don't forget to upvote the ones you find all too relatable. We also chatted to counselling psychologist, Michelle Lawrence from Chrysalis Therapy, to get her expert opinion on looking after your mental health.

And you must apologize, and I must build a wall and expell all those I’ve been very consistently insulting…
It's easier to understand these people when you realise they are emotionally stuck at age 3. Big toddlers who can only think about themselves. There's no solution. This year, a healthy baby died here bc the medical staff ignored the woman in labour. The doctor said to the journalist that babies die, so what? In his career, lots of babies died and it's acceptable. I cried for days. The doctor was clearly a big spoiled stupid kid pretending to be an adult. I can't imagine the dead child's parents' grief. A human died and the guilty person cannot accept the responsibility.
“Mental health is just as important as physical health,” Michelle Lawrence reminds Bored Panda during our interview, adding that “self-care is not selfish; it's essential” and “seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.” Lawrence is the founder of Chrysalis Therapy and is dedicated to helping people overcome the daily struggles life throws at them. She wants more people to normalize seeking professional help. As she puts it, "take care of the root, and the tree will flourish."
"People go to the gym or take up walking/running/hiking etc. to become physically fit, yet wait until the 'emotional wheels' come off before seeking professional help," she said. "Working with a therapist that is insightful can be transformative. You don't have to emotionally struggle through life - learn to be proactive about your emotional and mental acuity."
Lawrence says some of the most common issues she sees her patients battling with are trauma, emotional dysregulation, relationship challenges, balancing life's demands and expectations, low self-esteem, and the impact that it has on their identity. “These struggles often stem from societal pressures, unrealistic expectations, and inadequate support systems,” said the psychologist.
Go ahead and run from your worries. Literally. Just make sure it's a loop
We asked Lawrence what the hardest part of her job is. "Witnessing clients' pain and struggles, feeling empathetic distress, and managing secondary trauma," replied the psychologist, adding that "navigating complex cases, making tough decisions, and dealing with limited resources can (also) be challenging."
She told us that even therapists need therapy, as well as "regular self-reflection and support help". She believes that these things are important for professionals so that they can "process personal issues and emotions, maintain emotional regulation and resilience, develop self-awareness and introspection, manage burnout and compassion fatigue, and of course, enhance their clinical skills and effectivenes.
Even better idea; write down tasks as you complete them, no matter how minor, to see how much you *really*do in a day so you can stop beating yourself up for what didnt get done
I do that because otherwise I get to the end of the day and don't feel like I actually did anything, even if I've been busy all day.
The World Health Organization defines mental health as "a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and is able to make a contribution to his or her community." But it turns out that many people are struggling with their mental health.
Mental Health America (MHA) has revealed that nearly 60 million American adults experienced a mental health illness between 2021 and 2022. For more than 12.8 million people, things were so bad they felt they didn’t want to face life. The high cost of professional assistance is not helping the situation. In 2022, more than half of adults who wanted to receive mental health care said they didn’t because they thought it would cost too much.
My body has been mimicking the cascade of warning lights that all came on at once following the check engine light on my 2017 Honda. Always 36 hours of fear and anxiety over repair bills and then *poof* they magically disappear as if nothing was ever wrong. Then randomly do the full beat drop again a couple months later for another 36 hours just to keep me on my toes. 😑
Even worse.... I feel like I got "slightly irregular " parts at the assembly plant
My hazard lights are flashing and only one front tire is low on air. (Wonky walk!)
I can see the bright side of any awful situation. Does optimism make it any less horrible? No. No it does not.
Seeing something and feeling it are not the same. If I saw the timer on a bomb reaching zero in front of me I might think "guess I won't have to worry about work or Christmas presents any more". I'd have a hard time actually celebrating the fact, however briefly.
Load More Replies...When releasing the data this year, MHA added that “1 in 5 youth had at least one major depressive episode in the past year. Over half of them – nearly 3 million youth - did not receive treatment.” The stats further revealed that there are 340 people for every 1 mental health provider in the U.S.
“However, these figures may be an overestimate of active mental health professionals, as it may include providers who are no longer practicing or accepting new patients,” reads the MHA site.
Yeah, that's really hard... watching yourself doing insane stuff and having insane thoughts and you can't do a lot against it 😔
"what are you anxious about?" ohhh I don't know...nothing? but also everything?
A nurse said that to me once at a doctor’s appointment when my blood pressure was a bit high and I told her I have anxiety… A NURSE.
Load More Replies...And unless you've been there, nobody truly understands and pins the blame solely on you. It sucks, it hurts.
They used to think anxiety caused alot of stomach issues. Now They are seriously considering that stomach issues cause alot of anxiety. Imagine, logic.
Yeah, gut health has been overlooked for far too long.
Load More Replies...forget stomach she's, I get both those, head ache, I get quesy, then I get a fever, then I throw up somewhere alongg the line.
My anxiety & stress gave me brain damage. Had to relearn how to walk.
Meanwhile, a global study published in The Lancet Psychiatry warned that “by age 75 years, about one in two individuals will develop at least one of the mental disorders considered.” Researchers added that they found that anxiety and mood disorders were higher in female respondents. While externalizing disorders, like alcohol addiction, were more common for males.
Half the time, I put something off because Im afraid it will be frustratingly complicated and it isn't. The other half of the time I'm right. Then there's the times I think it should be simple and I'm wrong.
Then there's times I just say to hell with it let's go get pizza
Load More Replies...We call this " The 5 minutes/5 months rule": A task that takes 5 minutes to actually do, takes 5 months to get to. Therefore, it takes 5 months AND 5 minutes to get done.
And if you do come out with a good one I'll write it down for future use
I used to tackle this by doing 10% perfect, 80% reasonably and then quit. Now I cant acheve 10%, and Im demotivated by always starting new tasks on -10% and counting 😂🤯
Right there with ya... Also leads to a lot of 90% complete but still unfinished, and passable quality work to begin with that degrades every day the thing remains incomplete. 🤦🏼♀️

"Self-care means taking the time to do things that help you live well and improve both your physical health and mental health. This can help you manage stress, lower your risk of illness, and increase your energy," notes the National Institute of Mental Health's site. "Even small acts of self-care in your daily life can have a big impact."
Some ways to look after your mental health include exercising, eating healthy meals, getting enough sleep, setting goals, engaging in relaxing activities, connecting with family and friends, practising gratitude and trying to remain positive.
Oh, I am an interrupter.. it often turns out ok, because people get to tell their whole story, with more details and follow up questions, because of my jetstream comversation style 😅🫣
This is so accurate. It physically hurts me! I tense up and it's just like I KNOW I KNOW
I worked with a really bad stutter for a few years I used to have to squeeze my own fist to stop me yelling the words he was trying to say at him
The Institute suggests seeking professional help "if you are experiencing severe or distressing symptoms that have lasted 2 weeks or more". Some of the red flags to look out for include difficulty sleeping, changes in appetite or unplanned weight changes, or struggling to get out of bed because you don't want to face the day.
Other symptoms include difficulty concentrating, loss of interest in things you usually find enjoyable, the inability to complete tasks and activities you'd normally find manageable, and feelings of irritability, frustration, or restlessness.
"Sticks and stones may break your bones, but words can break hearts." -Tim Minchin
My ex said this: I threw the dictionary at him. He dodged into it! Now knows that words do hurt.
or I accidentally start folding clothes and won't stop until the whole house is squeaky clean
I've realized this is a delusion about all of life. Everyone waits until the "perfect moment" when there will be "no more troubles". Except, Life provides a steady stream of troubles to everyone, even those that don't look like they have them.
Mental health was once a taboo topic. But thankfully, things have changed. And that’s why we can enjoy a whole bunch of relatable mental health memes, like the ones shared on the “How Mental” Instagram page. A fair amount of researchhas been done on whether mental health memes are beneficial or damaging.
As this 2022 research paper notes, "social media pages dedicated to mental health memes appear to facilitate the expression of difficult emotions in a novel and creative way, providing social and emotional bonds with others, which may be perceived as socially supportive."
The paper, titled "Mental health memes: beneficial or aversive in relation to psychiatric symptoms?" goes on to reveal that engaging with mental health memes may actually present potential benefits for those experiencing psychiatric difficulty.
"In a social context, individuals report using memes to alleviate their symptoms and laugh at their problems while forming social connections with those in the same situation," noted the researchers. They aren't called relatable mental health memes for nothing.
and then halfway through the 3rd misunderstanding, "you know what never mind," and walk away.
My siblings always accused me of overexplaining things and still do silently in their heads. These days instead of stopping me mid-explanation, they either dismiss or completely ignore. And I am still frequently misunderstood!
Consider a river: Everything is fine while it resides in its bed, but panic spreads once it gets out!
What I hate is when I'm productive out of spite for my depression/anxiety and I manage to hate myself even more because I could have been even MORE productive.
Our expert agrees. "Humor can be beneficial because it reduces stigma, increases relatability, provides coping mechanisms and stress relief, fosters connection and community, and helps reframe perspectives and challenges negative thoughts," said Lawrence.
But warned that “humor should avoid trivializing or mocking mental health issues, should respect individual experiences and boundaries, and should be used in conjunction with, not instead of, professional help.”
I used to have a patient who would literally go to pizza hut to self soothe. Broke out of hospital once, police search, the full panic... I drove to pizza hut and there she was. Refused to return till I bought her ice cream factory.
Sometimes I use it to do other stuff like writing lies that I don't do the above mentioned thing
Me trying to fall asleep: . Brain: This is the time I've allotted for you to envision every plan of action possible for if a mountain lion jumps out of the bushes when you and the kids are outside!
If all of us could do one thing a day that would benefit our mental health and wellbeing, what would it be? According to Lawrence, we should breathe. But with purpose. “Practice mindful breathing exercises for 5-10 minutes a day,” she suggested. “Focus on breath, body sensations, or emotions, practice presence and non-judgment, to enhance self-awareness, emotional regulation, and reduce stress and anxiety.”
How are you taking care of your mental wellbeing? Do you have tips or tricks to share with others? We'd love to hear all about it in the comments.
When I cry, it often feels like my tears are azid and it physicaly hurts. Thats very normal, right? 😅 right??
Uh that is not normal but I mean at least your past the never crying and only getting a feeling in your throat phase

It's a small thing, but it's a small thing you are doing for yourself, so don't knock it! Another small thing that sounds absolutely dreadful and certainly takes a while to get used to but is free and does help is a 30-second cold shower after you've had your normal shower. Yes, it sounds like torture and it will make you swear the first few times, but it really can help with anxiety if you do it regularly.
With a few bits missing and the picture was meant to be a nice nature seen but I seem to have a run down scary looking shack in the woods with glowing scary looking eyes in the trees
Lol kind of. I have major depressive disorder and so I have about a week once a month where I'm in a depressive hole. I get annoyed cause I was being so productive and have crud to do and then BAM. Depression wall. Freaking annoying when I have a timeline and stuff to do
Could be PCOS or another hormone -disrupting female situation... I went on birth control pills just to stop the monthly mood rollercoaster that ended with my "monthly suicidees" a couple days before my period. Won't say I'm cured of MDD, but it leveled things off. 🤷🏼♀️
Load More Replies...For the top one, now I'm in the perimenopause, I can also recommend gingko supplements. I'm usually extremely sceptical about woo-woo pseudoscience and supplements but I can actually tell (and so can my family!) if I have forgotten to take it one day. The rage is sometimes beyond belief.
I like to simplify things. Eat for all of these, then go to bed and sleep for all of these.
This is why I had kids, to steal their snacks. (Of course I am joking!)
Try cutting carbs at lunchtime - it can help prevent the afternoon slump. Other than that, start counting the minutes to home time...
I recently started seeing a therapist and I told her last night that I imagine my brain has one of those huge barrels of comedically florescent green toxic waste and it just tips over randomly causing the negativity and literal toxicity towards myself.
Me? I would have just cut across the road from top to bottom and still wondered why I was so tired.
I always like how people tell you to exercise for depression and to feel better. I used to be so depressed (still am, actually) and would take my dog out for long walks. Sure, I felt better. Until I got home. Then I'd open the door and all my problems would hit me again and I'd be crying for hours. That's why I don't exercise. The high of feeling good for just a few minutes isn't worth it compared to feeling so awful afterwards again.
For some reason my brain read this as "you can be a strong person and still struggle with mental math." Which honestly, is also valid.
Our nervous system atill acts like we live in a very dangerous world. So it prepares and makes many different coctails of hormones for us, so that we can run for our lifes or jump out of danger. And then we never use it, so it stores and floats around our system. Making us feel dread and anxiety for no apparent reason. This is why a little movment can improve your mood. It metabolices it and gets it out of your body
Gosh yes. Or, later in life, just trying to process them all. Even my therapist said "I don't think I've ever met anyone with a history as full as yours" ... :-/ Keeping on chipping away at the iceberg. It's definitely getting smaller.
I found the wedding very draining in this regard. It was good to have some nice photos of family and friends with us to look back on afterwards though! No wonder a honeymoon is required! ;-)
Yeah no. I wouldn't even arrive at my wedding if people or looking at me
We had a wedding of 50 people in our hometown. We stayed at a hotel near the venue. Arrived about 11. Wife was asleep by 11:45. I was awake for another hour only because of a toothache. It was exhausting lovely but exhausting.
I daydream about doing some crazy thing and I don’t do anything fun OR productive because when I start fun thing I give up because of a mild annoyance
The voices in my head no that already. It's the looks I get off other people and them saying I think you might have mental health issues, that confirm I do.
"the voices in my head keep on telling me I'm cursed, I'm paranoid, I don't wanna make it any worse!"
Certain illnesses have become fashionable. I do think that in general, there are more people having been properly diagnosed than before and why that is, I do not know. You won't however, find many people walking around, bragging/joking, they have Bipolar 1 or are Schizophrenic. That's like saying "I shot some H this weekend. It didn't go well". It's far cooler to say "Did some coke this weekend. High five!"
Load More Replies...It's obvious that we are the most mentally ill country in the world. How did we get here?
