Metal rusts and velour can be torn, so it's only a matter of time before your old Honda Civic breaks down. Of course, if you have money and you bought that car because you love the way it looks, you can probably just take it to the mechanic and let them fix it. However, if you're broke and that was the only reason why you got that pile of junk in the first place, you'll probably have to bring it back to life yourself.
But fear not, you'd be amazed to know how much is possible with so little. And the subreddit r/RedneckEngineering is the perfect example of that. It has plenty of funny, surprising, and creative DIY projects that simultaneously make sense and appear completely useless but can definitely inspire you to pick up a wrench and start working on that metal pony of yours.

When my colleague Liucija contacted the founder of r/RedneckEngineering, they told her that the term “redneck engineering" is still open for interpretation. However, the Redditor reassured that it's also “the kind of thing you know when you see.”
For example, “It can range from something as common as using a hand mirror to replace a side-view mirror to something complex like building a backyard water slide with a loop-de-loop.” The members of the subreddit give “bonus points if it'd make an OSHA inspector cringe.”

The biggest difference between now and the old days in 2013 when r/RedneckEngineering was created is growth. The founder said that he used to be responsible for most of the posts, but the community has become really self-sustaining over time.
When it comes to submissions, you’ll see all kinds of bizarre makeshift gadgets and very questionable workarounds. Most posts generally come from people finding “low-budget workarounds to everyday problems with a few high-effort engineering projects and other submissions sprinkled in.”
The pandemic might also have something to do with the subreddit's increasing popularity. According to a national survey by The Freedonia Group in December 2020, 39% of consumers reported undertaking home improvement projects because of changes associated with these trying times.

I kinda feel sorry for the cat, that platform is only there just to trigger the trap, without the platform, the cat wouldn't be able to reach the birdhouse anyway, so tbh, this is kind of just being an asshole to the cat. :/

I planted a climbing rose that covered the tree that chickadees had built a nest in--worked perfectly to keep the kitties away from their nest and the birds used the nest for several years.

Letting cats decimate entire populations of birds, rodents and other small animals. People who believe that cats killing wild animals is """"natural"""" and """cute""" are just abhorrent to me.

I agree. Also, cats live longer if they are indoor cats. Cruel? Letting your cats out where they can fight other cats, get hit by cars, stolen, and get sick.

The cat got wet!!!! The birds will die a tormenting and painful death!! Some birds pine to death for their mates but I suppose that's ok!!! ... Making the pole higher does not solve the problem at all!! When the new baby fledglings arrive, guess who will be there!! .... I find it amazing how people can feel sorry for the cat and not the animals they toy with

You're ridiculous. Some cats play in water. Some cats get baths, like sphinx. My cat would race my mother to the bathroom and sit in the sink, and wait for Mom to soak her from head to toe, every day, and once she was dry, she'd do it again.

That's called a "swamp cooler." It relies far more on the absorption of heat energy when water evaporates than on the coolness of the ice. (in fact, the ice might make it LESS effective, ESPECIALLY if the freezer which makes the ice is running in the same environment.) VERY effective in drier climates.

I mean.. it'll work. It'll take a fairly long while TO work, since it doesn't have anything actively moving the water through the radiator, so has to rely solely on convection currents to do the job. And I can't imagine the electricity or gas bill - depending on what the house boiler uses - is going to be fun to pay by the end. But it'll work all the same.

Y'all should see my husband's weed-eater-motor-powered bicycle, and what we affectionately call "Tilly", a rototiller with a wheeled seat trailer thing, so when the rototiller goes, it pulls along your seat. Tilly-618e...3f09b0.jpg

Want warmer kitchen floors without having to renovate for radiant heat flooring or having filthy carpets? Interlocking foam tiles like they use in daycares. :) I can stand in my kitchen barefoot in winter, when previously, I could feel the cold of the floor right through socks and slippers. Easy maintenance, easy replacement. If the cats pukes on it - easy clean up. Drop something? Doesn't break. :)

I love the full, international flavor of "redneck engineering" presented here. ("Rednecks" are middle-American, manual laborers, who are often poor compared to the coastal elites, but very proud of their self-sufficiency and culture which is very distinct from coastal elites.)

When I was in Cabo, Mexico, they did tricks like that. The hotel van's door opener was missing. They replaced it with a grip wrench and it worked like a charm. There were so many Mexico-built VW bugs there. Many of them have different colors on them. Like , a door was replaced with another color door. They were really resourceful.
