And then there's functional depression, where you experience all that, but *do* appear to be fine, even smiling at a coworker's joke, and it's all an act for the benefit of others.

30 False Facts People Believe In That Peeps In This Online Group Are Tired Of Explaining Quarantine and "stopping the curve" was not meant to prevent anyone from getting covid it was meant to slow down the spread so that hospitals did not get overloaded I'm so f*****g tired of hearing people complain about how useless quarantine was because it didn't completely magically stop covid or something when that was literally never the f*****g point Also the mask wasn't to prevent you from breathing in other people's s**t it's to stop you from spreading your germs further because many people will be asymptomatic carriers for anywhere between a few days to a few weeks after infection before showing any symptoms similar to how it's been normalized in a lot of Asian countries to for example wear a face mask if you have to go out in public even just with a cold or something it's to prevent you from spreading it to other people.

Thank you. Also it wasn't a government political agenda. The vast majority of governments referred to the best available information the medical community had available to them at the time. Medicine does not stand still, it is not static, more information equals changes in priorities and information was being gathered, analysed and disseminated on a global scale every day. Give them a break and a round of applause they did the best they could with what they knew every day, tirelessly, TO SAVE LIVES.

The fact that the US President was one of the biggest liars about Covid has a lot to do with why it didn't slow down like it should.

Masks DO help a BIT at helping to prevent you from getting sick when you go out. That, and washing your hands thoroughly with soap the minute you get home. I'm saying this as someone who is immunocompromised, mask wearing and hand washing have helped prevent me from getting sick every time I step out of the house.

Absolutely, there was a demonstration done early on where they did a simple test of coughing on a petri dish and culturing bacteria. They did tests at different distances, with and without mask and with a mask-like covering on the dish. No surprise that the best result (least growth) was when you had a mask on both target and source and worst result (most growth) was no masks at all. edit: I'm aware bacteria and viruses are different, but the principle of transmission remains the same.

It infuriates me how many people make claims and accusations against their/any government about doing things "wrong" - it was a completely new and unexpected situation, it was handled after taking in to account any/all findings from professionals in the relevant fields. Government officials aren't psychic, they're barely able to work out how to do their own shopping, they did the best they could with the information they had at the time. All to PROTECT people/businesses. So they got some things wrong, we live and learn. No one is infallible. It was a sh*t situation for everyone. No one person/organisation/government is exactly at blame.

I agree as well. I said this throughout the pandemic. Everyone was learning, doing their best they could with the info and resources they had. Mistakes were done, for sure, but in the end we found the way and succeeded. Now we are better prepared for pandemics.

I honestly believe COVID could have been eradicated if people had done a better job with the preventative measures --- quarantining, masking, hygiene, vaccination -- and now it is endemic instead. Look how we are bringing back Polio and the Measles too. Dunning-Kruger in action.

I don't think any expert believes that anymore. You can't eradicate a disease that often spreads asymptomatically. The other thing that made that goal impossible was the fact that the virus mutates so rapidly, making vaccines less effective. That said, I think in America we could have done a lot more and saved lives. But to still subscribe to a belief that we could have gotten it completely under control goes against all the scientific knowledge that we have gathered about covid. There was no stopping it in its tracks because it was so easily transmissable.

That would only happen in areas that embraced mask wearing to begin with. That eliminates the majority of my country, geographically speaking. And that's sad for a country that was supposed to set an example for the world: The US.

Masks and prevention measures were also there to stop the spread back to those who were immunocompromised. My wife had cancer throughout lockdown, if I had brought covid back she would very likely died. Anyone wearing a mask and distancing was helping me keep her alive, and also allowing my son and I to leave the house and stay sane!

The annoying thing is a hard quarantine really does work. The problem was in so many places it was a soft quarantine and you had idiots literally going out of their way to avoid quarantine protocols. Even to the point of knowing they were sick, traveling interstate and partying and shopping instead of isolating at home.

I will add that quarantine did help prevent people from getting COVID. I live in Nunavut, and we basically quarantined the entire territory. Anyone coming into the territory had to quarantine for 2 weeks before flying in. That meant we were one of the last places in the World to get a single case, which if I remember correctly was like March 2021. We also saw a significant decrease in all other respiratory diseases due to social distancing and quarantines compared to every other year.

And going by how the world thinks covid’s over (hint, it’s not), the next time we have the beginnings of another pandemic we can expect it to go pretty much exactly the same. My trust in my government took a hit when they said face masks don't work when it was obvious Covid comes in aerosols and FFP2 and FFP3 really prevent transmission (to the wearer). Turns out they said it because initially, not enough face masks were available. Nobody listened to them after that anymore. [EDIT: what are you downvoting, people?]

The situation was hardly clear at the start. The govt has to manage alot of issues at once. They need to manage panic of the masses and the best use of resources aka limited mask stocks on day 1. Thinking strategically....what would you do to keep the calm and at the same time ensure what masks were available were being used where they would do the most good?

There were wide variations of "lockdown". Some were totally ridiculous. People were not allowed to sit on a park bench where I live, totally silly. The correlation between strict lock down and disease spread was weak, Sweden versus the U.K. and Florida versus California for example.

We certainly were told that "flattening the curve" was meant to stop covid from spreading. But the curve had flattened by April 7. For months after that, businesses remained closed. As the months rolled by, Anthony Fauci began insisting that businesses should remain closed until a vaccine was found. This is the sort of stuff that fueled the distrust: the resurgence of the virus that winter (and mini-resurgence that summer) DID put pressure on the hospital systems, but FFS, talk about "flattening the curve again," not about "shutting down the economy until a vaccine is found."

Toast says that they hear stereotypes in common conversations. It’s not uncommon for a random conversation to follow the lines of: “I have to keep X organized because of my OCD,” with toast running across these conversations once a month, sometimes more often.

“When I tell people I have OCD, I don't get as many stereotypes as I first did,” toast says. People associate them with germaphobia, and they may not be very far off, as they are particular about public restrooms, anything that looks like blood, and so on.

Toast would like for people to know a lot more about OCD: “I'd like readers to know that OCD is mental torture. We have an intrusive thought and latch onto it. If I had this horrible thought, it must make me a horrible person, right? No, but OCD says yes.”

There are a lot of different obsessions and compulsions, and they’re typically not logical. OCD sufferers generally know that, but the miniscule chance of 'X is true' or 'Y will happen and it will be my fault' overrides everything else.

Toast would also adopt other people’s symptoms if they read about them. At this point, toast has been exposed to so much information, takes medication, and has been in therapy, so they aren’t as worried about that anymore. Yet OCD attempts to find new ways to present itself - it’s a sneaky and creative disorder.

The way people anthropomorphize AI with total conviction, total certainty that it is just a breath away from consciousness, is really irritating not because it's a crazy idea, it's not, but because people reach their conclusion based on zero understanding of how the technology works. It's OK to not understand how it functions, but then the next step is to educate yourself, not dive into the deep end of ignorance and assume you know something that is just wrong. "If I don't understand it, no one understands it," is the gist of how people decide they are right, and it's tiring. Read a book, read the documentation, come up with a more sophisticated opinion.

We should not even call it AI - it's not "intelligent" in any sense of the word.

30 False Facts People Believe In That Peeps In This Online Group Are Tired Of Explaining I’m a payroll accountant. If I have to explain to one more person that you can’t lose money by getting a raise because you’re in a “higher tax bracket” they are going to have to change the term going postal to going payroll.

There is a very specific set of circumstances where you *can* lose money by getting a pay rise into a higher tax bracket - if you are receiving means tested social benefits (such as child tax credits) you may no longer be eligible for them any more. Whether this means an actual drop in real money will depend on your individual circumstances, but it has been known for someone to lose £40 a month by getting a pay rise and losing tax credits as a result.

“You might not be able to immediately tell someone is engaging in an OCD compulsion. Some are mental compulsions that can be invisible, or maybe the person won't seem entirely present in the conversation,” toast provides. They may be repeating or mouthing phrases that are compulsions for soothing their anxiety, which is only temporary.

Others engage in behaviors that the average person associates with OCD, for example, washing hands until they’re raw and bleeding.

What people don’t see is other, more detailed reasoning: "I have to wash my hands because I touched that binder from science class that touched the table that had people's hands and pencils on it, people/pencils who were in the same lab with me growing E. coli, they might not have washed their hands well and I don't want to get myself/my family/my friends/my dog sick."

Many schools in the US are funded by local property taxes, so poor areas have less funding than rich areas. It's a self-perpetuating problem.

To each their own. This shouldn't be a debate. If you like WFH, find a job that allows you to do so. Stop calling your job toxic because their policy requires you to go into the office and find a job that doesn't.

People may walk a certain route, knock three times, avoid a pair of socks, arrange books perfectly, retype a sentence perfectly or do any number of unrelated things because someone may get hurt or die if they don’t.

Toast says that they would have to make sure that they didn’t hit a person when hitting a pothole. Later on they’d hit the same pothole and have to turn around to check again. Logically, they know that they didn’t hit someone, but the “what if” remains.

There is a reason why OCD is the “doubting disorder.” Toast finishes the interview by saying that there are a lot of resources about it, but they recommend the IOCDF, which you should definitely check out if you’re interested.

They're not even spiders. See Harvestman. Although the term DLL is used for different animals in different places, notably for the crane fly in the UK, and very occasionally elsewhere for an unrelated true spider.

30 False Facts People Believe In That Peeps In This Online Group Are Tired Of Explaining As someone who currently goes to cooking school if i need to explain that the red s**t you see coming out of your medium rare steak isn’t blood one more time im gonna have a god damn aneurysm. For this fact, Bored Panda reached out to the post for a bit more insight into food misconceptions. Another common myth that Weirdo mentioned is people believing all fats are bad. There are, actually, healthy and unhealthy fats. Healthy fats are in foods like avocado and are very nutritious. On the other hand, trans fats are one of the worst things you can have as they can cause heart and other issues. "Not all fats cause you to get "fat," for lack of a better term. Mainly it's sugar that gets people all fatty, not the actual fat from food." Weirdo69213 doesn't suggest that all kinds of fats are good, but that you should be more informed about them and know what you're eating and what they may be doing to your body.

I find this to be misleading. Blood itself is about half water, so saying it's not blood, it's water and myoglobin feels disingenuous. Really what they want to say is it's not hemoglobin, it's myoglobin. And the difference between the two is minor to a non-professional. Hemoglobin binds and transports oxygen to, e.g., muscles. Myoglobin binds and stores oxygen in the muscles. So both hemo- and myoglobin are cytoplasmic proteins that bind oxygen for muscle use, both are red, both spend a lot of time suspended in water. I think that is probably blood enough for most lay people

That being thin does not automatically mean you're healthy. That barefooting is not illegal nor unhygienic nor unhealthy. Basically anything and everything people say when they spot by bare feet. That I shaved my head because *why not*, and not as some sort of statement. That my tolerance of you and your views doesn't mean I agree with you. If I just silently listen to your sociopolitical speal I likely disagree quite strongly. That all women must want to and should reproduce. I could go on all day, really.

Going barefoot can be dangerous for many reasons. Sharp or invasive items, excrement and fungi are everywhere. Feet are quite susceptible to injuries. And not everyone who regularly barefoots has great hygiene.

There’s what’s known as frictional vacancy, which is when a house is temporarily empty because it’s being sold or the renters have moved out and the new ones haven’t moved in yet. This is normal is expected to be around 3-5% and it functionally means we’re at maximum housing capacity.

There is no evidence that "blood is thicker than water" was originally "the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb." That notion is about 30-ish years old and comes from two guys who cite zero sources. There is, however, plenty of evidence suggesting that the phrase was always "blood is thicker than water," or something similar. The earliest similar phrase is in German from the 12th century, but that's almost certainly not where the current phrase comes from. More likely, it came from Scottish sources. These ones unambiguously say "blood is thicker than water" with exactly the apparent interpretation. The earliest reference to an alleged longer phrase is from 1994. Regarding "Jack of all trades, master of none," the original is something along the lines of "Jack of all trades." The "master of none" part was added in the 18th century, but even then it had no negative connotation. Now personally speaking, I never interpreted the phrase to be disparaging, and it was new to me just recently that it's used as such. Until reading Reddit threads, I had never heard it used non-positively. That said, the final part about being better than a master of one is only attested at best in the last 40 or so years, and that's a generous timeframe. It's right to say that it's originally a positive statement about being well-rounded, but this "original phrase" being "Jack of all trades, master of none, but better than a master of one" is ahistorical nonsense. It's perhaps unsurprising at this point that "curiosity killed the cat" on it's own is the older version (though *curiosity* was originally *care*). The timeframe here is much shorter: the version using *care* dates to the late 1500s, the version using *curiosity* dates to the 1800s, and the version with the added part of satisfaction dates to 1905, exactly. It is *not* originally "curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back." As for "the customer is always right," once again, there is zero evidence suggesting that the original phrase was "the customer is always right in matters of taste." The idea of the original phrase was that customer satisfaction should be prioritized. Sinilar phrases from the time (1900s, the decade) include French "le client n'a jamais tort" (the customer is never wrong), which is from hotelier César Ritz, who thought that if a customer doesn't like a dish, it shall be removed and replaced, no questions asked. This is a very narrow application of the idea which does line up with the fake longer phrase, but it's not proof that the longer version is real. Likewise, there's German "der Kunde ist König" (the customer is king) and Japanese "お客様は神様です" (the customer is a god). This was, in part, meant to give customers more power over more shady shopkeepers and override the earlier idea of "caveat emptor" (let the buyer beware). Of course, even back then people realized that dishonest customers can game the system. The person who is usually listed as inventing the phrase, Harry Gordon Selfridge, doesn't have a direct quote attributed to him for this, but he definitely is responsible for popularizing the idea through his implementation of it. Newspapers were the first to give it a name, and the original was, in fact, "the customer is always right." Some later altered it to give the idea that the customer shall be assumed to be right until is is demonstrably obvious that they are wrong, but the quote never had any mention of taste until recently.
