The Local Nursing Home Is An Indoor Town. There's A Movie Theater And A Pub

This place is called "Doverwood Village". It's a skilled nursing facility located in Hamilton, OH. Senior residents receive 24-hour medical care while also getting the rehabilitation care they need, which can include range of motion exercises, gait and balance training and individualized exercise programs. The movie theater shows movies 2x each day. An old one and a new one.

I saw an article about this place years ago, it's such a fantastic design. Infinitely better than a depressing institution looking place.

While that's places are absolutely amazing, they are extremely expensive. My Grandma developed Alzheimers after falling and breaking her hip. (She was already having dementia. We found a place like this for her. It was $15,000 a month. She lived for two years there. She had a whole life with a boyfriend and would go to the salon and lunch with her friends. She would sometimes remember us, but not very often, but she was happy. But in the end, those 2 years cost $350,000. The only reason she was able to do this was her and my grandfather were very successful and had a lot of money. Most people cannot afford this type of place for themselves or their loved ones, and many have no options but to go to an overcrowded, underemployment, instation like place. (We would have all taken care of her, but she made us swear to put her in a care home if this type of thing happened. Not because she felt we wouldn't take care of her, or she didn't like us, we were all very close. It was because she wanted us to just be her family, and not her caregivers, amount other similar things. We honored those wishes)

I have been advocating turning defunct indoor malls into senior citizen/memory care facilities like this. For the largest of malls, they can include shops, doctor/dentist offices, pharmacy, post office, cafes, library, ice cream parlor, coffee shops and so on. All in a climate controlled environment with restricted and monitored entrances and exits.

Awesome! This should be the norm. Why shouldn't elderly people still enjoy life? They're still people and it will come to us all one day (barring unfortunate accidents, of course!).

Monthly rate is between $2,650 to $8,121, so you have to be pretty well off to afford putting your loved one here.

That is cheap! My Grandma was in a facility like this, and it was $15,000 a month. It was an Alzheimer's facility though, so that might make a difference.

Having visual and physical reminders of a person’s history is such an important part of elderly care, in the care home my nana was in there was a room that had all fixtures and fittings as well as furniture and decor from the 1950s/60s even TV sets and radios, it was amazing to see these older people coming to life in that room, people who were mute outside it suddenly having lots to say and almost going back in time to when they were teenagers or young adults

Why do we find some things interesting and others boring? Why can one person be bored by something that's fascinating to someone else?

Why might someone yawn while watching a movie their friend is excited about? We know everyone is different, but what determines how interested we are in something?

I tried to look it up, and the info I found all referred to aquarium snails. If the water is too acidic (low Ph), it causes the shell to delaminate and grow clear. It could also be water temperature insufficient calcium, or insufficient light, exposure to copper, or too much potassium or CO2.

There are some snail species whose shell is normally clear. They tend to live in fresh water and have flattened shells. This is not one of them. It must be a unique genetic mutant or, as said above, living in acidic water.

There are actually three main reasons:

First, people are naturally drawn to things that match their feelings and beliefs. For example, those in love enjoy romantic songs, and funny folks love comedy movies. Friends often like the same stuff because they share feelings and beliefs.

As with the legendary katipō, the blue carpenter bee is all about the females. It's the females who sport that brilliant blue pubescence (yep that's what the fuzz is called), and the females alone wield a stinger. The males are stinger-less, and have a more subdued, brown or greenish fuzz. -- Australian Geographic

You'd have to balance them out, like they balance passengers on airplanes so the weight is evenly distributed. If you have chubby babies in the front pockets, and tiny premature babies at the back, you'd overbalance. You'd have to alternate between chubsters and tiny ones all round.

Third, we all have unmet needs, and what interests us is often linked to these needs. If something helps us get closer to fulfilling one of our important needs, it becomes interesting. For example, if someone hates being single, they won't enjoy staying home or watching TV; they'll prefer social media and going out. This also explains why we find certain people captivating – they help us meet our needs.

This Is What Some Grains Of Sand Look Like When Magnified 100 To 300 Times

This Is What Some Grains Of Sand Look Like When Magnified 100 To 300 Times

Gary Greenberg introduces himself as a scientist, author, teacher and photographer who combines his passion for art and science by exploring the hidden dimensions of nature. "The secrets of nature are visible everywhere. Yet, they remain secrets until they are revealed," he wrote on his website."The miracles of nature are tangible, and they can be seen directly through the microscope. The magnificence of nature lies in its consciousness. When we commune with nature, we become conscious of our connection with the universe."
And he knows what he's talking about. Greenberg invented the high-definition 3D lenses that he takes his pictures on, resulting in 18 U.S. patents under his name. He was a photographer and filmmaker until age 33 when he moved from LA to London and earned a Ph. D. in biomedical research. This has given him a unique appreciation for biological and scientific curiosities and for the optical macro photography technologies he would need to document them.
The sand composition can vary drastically depending on where it’s from, but this grain is from a beach in Hawaii, where Dr. Greenberg is located.

I tried this with the sand from my local beach under a microscope. It was extremely boring compared to these kind of pictures. I guess which beach matters a lot. Next year we are taking another trip to the Philippines. If I remember I'll save a tiny bit of their sand to look at.

A lot of the grains look familiar, baby molluscs, sea urchin spines, broken glass, coral. This doesn't look like any beach I'm familiar with in Australia. During World War II, balloons using sand as ballast floated over the USA. Looking at the sand under a microscope at grains like these showed that the sand came from a Japanese beach. Yes, which beach matters a lot.

It is true, to a degree, that the images are curated as mentioned in comments, and your average "boring" rock and mineral sand beach isn't going to look as exciting- but I learned a whole lot of interesting science geek stuff about sand on my half hour trip down the rabbit hole.

White peacocks are just a naturally occuring colour variant. And they aren't even that rare. Easily half of the peacock population on peacock island, Berlin are white. White variants of animals aren't automaticially albinos.

What does it mean for something to be interesting? It's all about how an experience feels to the person having it. This is about the personal, inside perspective of an experience. For example, eating your favorite food feels good not because the food itself is pleasurable, but because the experience of eating it is enjoyable.

Similarly, when we say something is beautiful or awe-inspiring, we're not talking about the thing itself but how we feel about it. We look at a breathtaking sunset, and it moves us; the beauty is what we feel. The same goes for awe—it's a part of how we react to it. Interest works in this way too; it's about how we feel and engage with something.

    A Curly-Haired Horse

    A Curly-Haired Horse

The exact origin of the Bashkir Curly Horse is one of the greatest mysteries of the horse world. Horses with curly coats are most certainly an ancient breed. They have been depicted in art and statuary in early China as far back as 161 AD. There has been evidence of their presence in South America and Europe. There is evidence that Curlies have been in North America since the early 1800's.

I met someone at the local horse park with a Bashkir. They're very unique. Although to me they sort of look like they have bed head and I want to brush them. :) Most horse breeds only get "curly" looking when they're sweaty or wet so I can't help but think this breed looks unkempt. But cuddly.

I dread at the prospect of cleaning it. Regular short, straight haired ones can make an incredible pugs of themselves, now add curls to it.

    Bryn

They brush like normal horses, though instead of a curry comb you generally have to use a longer bristled brush but it's not bad. You do have to be more careful of their manes and tails because they can knot more easily (because they're curly too)

    Rocks On The Lake Baikal

    Rocks On The Lake Baikal

Rocks on the lake Baikal get heated from the sunlight every now and then and melt the ice beneath. After the sun is gone, the ice turns solid again thus creating a small stand for the rock above. It is called the Baikal Dzen.

Lake Baikal also creates large melted ice rings (some as large as 3-4 miles wide 5-7 km). Many theories- but the most recent is that water flowing in from rivers raises the temperature slightly. Enough to melt the ice.

Saying something is interesting means explaining a mix of your expectations, preferences, beliefs, and curiosity that you bring to an activity. This blend shapes how you experience the activity. What makes something interesting is this unique combination, which varies for each person. There's no single formula for making something universally interesting. Sometimes it's the clash between expectations and reality, while other times, it's a person's curiosity that uncovers intriguing aspects of an activity.

We have an urban herd that that comes by our house at times, some of our neighbors feed them which isn't legal. There have been several albino members. We have had some hit by cars and they get into gardens.

I don't know. Those bananas have different DNA than normal ones. You have no idea what chemicals are in them or what health effects they will have on the human body. (<-- j/k. Just making fun of the dumb anti-GMO crowd).

For context it's an old military base, the Seneca Army Depot. The predators that would normally eat the white deer were driven off, out of the fence, by the soldiers. The base commander forbade the hunting of white deer well allowing hunting generally. This combined with the increased visibility leading to fewer road accidents involving white deer, created a strong selection pressure in favor of white coats.

I had just starting dating a rather sexually straight-laced woman. (Her father was a Baptist preacher.) But one day she sidled up to me, pressed herself closely, and said ""You know, I have something you don't!" Since we had not yet been intimate, my first thought was "I damn well hope so!" She had me hold both hands up and she matched me thumb for thumb, forefinger for forefinger etc. on both hands. When I ran out of digits, she still had two pinkies to wave at me. She had six fingers on each hand. (And she taught piano!) As a friend of mine explained it, "Well, if a woman goes out with you more than once, genetic damage is obviously indicated."

The main factor in survival for premature babies is lung maturation-the lungs transition through developmental stages. Before 18 weeks they are pseudoglandular, 18-24 weeks they are canalicular, 24-36 weeks they are saccular, and 36 weeks to about 18 months, they become alveolar. Its not an instant change from one to the other, so at 23-24 weeks, some of your lung tissue will be canalicular and some will be maturing into saccular. The more saccular development you have, the better your chance of survival. After 25 weeks, most of your lungs will have matured to saccular, so oxygen transfer is possible. If you had a baby at 23 weeks weighing 500g, and a baby at 26 weeks weighing 300g, the 26 weeker would do better even though they're smaller, because their lungs will be more mature. Plus, if they're growth restricted in utero, that causes fetal stress, so they up their production of steroids and that helps the lungs speed up maturation. Human bodies are amazing!

Wow, this is truly amazing. We have come so far in science/tech and medicine in the past few decades. I was born in 1985 prematurely at around 24 weeks. I weighed 2lbs 2.5 oz or 1kg roughly, 13in long ~33cm stretched out from head to toe and I was considered a miracle baby. I was actually baby of the year at the hospital I was born at,(my 1st major accomplishment/s) 🤣 but I almost didn't make it through the night a few times due to my lungs amongst other things weren't fully developed yet and I did have moderate asthma until around 6-8 years old and I guess I grew out of it. Ps- I was so small that the clothes made for preemie babies were too big for me that I legit wore Cabbage Patch Doll clothes.

    Sun Through A UV Lens

    Sun Through A UV Lens

A suite of NASA's sun-gazing spacecraft have spotted an unusual series of eruptions in which a series of fast puffs forced the slow ejection of a massive burst of solar material from the sun's atmosphere. "Looking at the corona in extreme ultraviolet light we see the source of the puffs is a series of energetic jets and related flares," said Nathalia Alzate, a solar scientist at the University of Aberystwyth in Wales. "The jets are localized, catastrophic releases of energy that spew material out from the sun into space. These rapid changes in the magnetic field cause flares, which release a huge amount of energy in a very short time in the form of super-heated plasma, high-energy radiation and radio bursts."

I kep asking myself "which spacecraft'. This is more detail than you'd see from SOHO, which posts daily images of the Sun like this. It's not STEREO, not Parker solar probe. It could be Solar Dynamics Observatory, but I didn't know that it took pictures at this wavelength. Or could be a Japanese space probe.

seen something similar in Denmark. Their rooms are made like independent apartments. Once you are inside, it seems like you have entered someones house for a visit. Elderly person can bring their own furniture from home, arrange and have at their room whatever they want. This Is A Music Typewriter: How Music Was Typed Before Computers

Marketed in the 1950s, it sold for about $255 (about $2,415 in today’s money). Keaton was trying to create something that would print characters precisely on staff and indicate exactly where the next character would be printed to ensure accuracy, and ended up with a circular keyboard which gives the typewriter its distinct look.

You may be surprised to discover that the poles of Mercury are sufficiently cold that ice can exist there. There isn't enough atmosphere to convect heat up from the tropics. Also, because of the greenhouse effect, Venus is hotter on average than Mercury. In the same way that Earth has a much higher average temperature than the Moon despite being the same distance from the Sun.

What causes rainbow pools? Rainbow pools usually appear in certain swamps, marshes No compatible source was found for this media. USFWS said the colorful sheen across the water's surface is a result of natural oils being released from decaying vegetation or from bacteria breaking down iron in the soil.Mar 1, 2023

I would say it was a sauropod femur, but as far as I can tell, no large saueopods lived in prehistoric France, but don't take my word for it. Probably something like a large theropod, if I'm right about it not being a sauropod.

This Butterfly Is A Bilateral Gynandromorph, Literally Half Male, Half Female

This Butterfly Is A Bilateral Gynandromorph, Literally Half Male, Half Female

A gynandromorph is an organism that contains both male and female characteristics. But this butterfly is a bilateral gynandromorph, which means one half is completely female and the other half is completely male. The cause of this phenomenon is typically, but not always, an event in mitosis during early development. While the organism contains only a few cells, one of the dividing cells does not split its sex chromosomes typically. This leads to one of the two cells having sex chromosomes that cause male development and the other cell having chromosomes that cause female development. For example, an XY cell undergoing mitosis duplicates its chromosomes, becoming XXYY. Usually this cell would divide into two XY cells, but in rare occasions the cell may divide into an X cell and an XYY cell. If this happens early in development, then a large portion of the cells are X and a large portion are XYY. Since X and XYY dictate different sexes, the organism has tissue that is female and tissue that is male.

Usually sex-related mosaic and chimeric life cannot produce either type of reproductive component in a fertile form (or they can produce one). The only theoretical case of where a mosaic might be bi-fertile is if they had both genetic mosaicism and a differentiated double genital formation. The odds of this are phenomenally low, and even then there's no guarantee of both gonad sets being fertile.

The atmosphere was not toxic, it was overly hot and humid. Warmer air contains more humidity than colder one. Since it was very hot in that cave your lungs would have been the coldest area in there, so the caves humidity would have condensated there. Making you drown even if you're not undwe water.

Excuse me @Jihana, but have you any trusted source to share on this? I'm curious, as normal people fairing quite well (mostly) at temperature levels of >40°C. Not to mention a lot of people enjoyed the sauna (humid as well as dry ones). So I'm majorly intrested in this fact... as far as I'm aware no scientist died in that cave. (Although considering their PSA there might have been some time limits - but as far as I did know it was also to protect the cave's unique structure).

    Transparent Fish

    Transparent Fish

Experts believe it could be a Salpa maggiore (Salpa maxima), commonly found in the Southern Ocean. Salps tend to roam the upper layers of the ocean where sunlight can still penetrate. They move by straining water through their gelatinous bodies, feeding on phytoplankton and other small bits of organic matter. The ghostly appearance is believed to be a form of camouflage for the otherwise defenseless creature.

Salps aren't fish. Well, they're way less related to say, a goldfish than a whale is. Or you are. They are, however, the basic chordate, the type of organism that includes fish, whales, sea squirts, cows and people. I hesitant to call them "primitive" members of the group that includes vertebrates, because they may outnumber vertebrates.

    Albino Plant

    Albino Plant

Trees, like animals, can also experience albinism, though it is extremely rare. The reason it’s rare is because without chlorophyll, the plant can’t get energy, and dies shortly after sprouting unless it has some other source of food. So if you see a big plant that doesn’t have any green in its leaves, it’s getting its nutrition from the roots of a neighbouring plant of the same species, feeding on the sugars created by the other plant’s photosynthesis. Albino plants are basically vampires.

The round nodules are a dead giveaway that this was created by electroplating a dead scorpion. You can electroplate something which is not metal by coating it in a conductive substance first like paint which has had graphite mixed into it.

They generally range from about 2,000-3,000CAD or 1500-2,000USD, and that is just the implant, not the surgical/anesthetic fees. There is also a raging debate amongst us veterinarians on how ethical they are. I have only done them on 1 dog and I donated the whole service. He was beaten with a bat and struggled to eat/was vastly loosing vweight/ muscle mass because he could not really eat with his muzzle caved in and it was very painful for him to open his mouth for syringe feeding. I did the implants & fixed his jaw, but I would be hard pressed to do it again. It's not a singular procedure, so multiple rounds of anesthesia and there is a LOT of specific care during the reconstruction and healing process. It looks "cool" but it's really not. Yes, I did it because I couldn't watch this animal suffer a beating & then starve to death, but yeah it was rough.

Much less chances for doing this to prevent bushfires recently, due to bad weather caused by global warning, though certain people claim it's a conspiracy that has stopped them being used.

Whittier Is A City In The U.S. State Of Alaska. The Population Is Around 220 And They All Live In A Single Building

Whittier, Alaska, a town where nearly everyone lives in the same building. The fourteen-story high-rise—called Begich Towers, or BTI—contains a post office, a police station, a grocery store, a Laundromat, a health clinic, and a church. (There once was a combination video rental store and tanning salon, but it’s been closed for a while now.) Built by the US Army in the 1950s, BTI originally housed officers and their families, and though its concrete walls have since been given a cheerful paint job, the fortress-like, institutional feel remains.

    Nasa's Photo Of Pluto

    Nasa's Photo Of Pluto

NASA's New Horizons spacecraft captured this high-resolution enhanced color view of Pluto on July 14, 2015. The image combines blue, red and infrared images taken by the Ralph/Multispectral Visual Imaging Camera (MVIC). Pluto's surface sports a remarkable range of subtle colors, enhanced in this view to a rainbow of pale blues, yellows, oranges, and deep reds. Many landforms have their own distinct colors, telling a complex geological and climatological story that scientists have only just begun to decode. The image resolves details and colors on scales as small as 0.8 miles (1.3 kilometers).

In the 1990s, I lived in a house that was on a substantial lot, 0.4 acre, but had been built right at the street, and previous owners had extensively gardened the rest. If I'd stayed there, and had the money, I'd've moved my house back to the rear center.

This is common where I live due to city/county permitting laws. Some homes were built in rural areas "to close" to a property line. So the owners have to either move their home or remodel to give a 4-10' property like clearance depending on the structure. Before anyone comments; yes, it super dumb and everyone hates it. Henningsvær Stadion and its clubhouse are regarded as a "hub" for the Henningsvær community, with local children training and playing there together. The venue is only used for amateur football. Henningsvær Stadion has gained attention from foreign media because of the view around it. As a result, the venue has been a tourist attraction. Foreign clubs, including from the United States, have played at the venue.
