30 Construction Solutions That Don’t Solve Problems, Only Create Them, As Shared By This Instagram Account (New Pics)
Many of us instinctively know whether a design is good and user-friendly or if it’s something clobbered together at the last minute without much thought for aesthetics, the future, or our poor artistic feelings. However, some home design ‘solutions’ are so problematic, they deserve to be named and shamed far and wide.
That’s where the Russian ‘Typical Rykozhop’ project on Instagram comes in. The account documents the most egregious design and construction decisions that would make any design major’s jaw drop (watch some of them faint, too!). Scroll down for the best of the truly worst (or is that the worst of the worst?) and upvote the design solutions that you simply love to hate, dear Pandas.
If you’re in the mood for some more horrifying home aesthetics, awful craftsmanship, and attempts to make things fit, then you’re more than welcome to browse Bored Panda’s first article about ‘Typical Rykozhop’ right here. It’s the perfect lesson about what not to do.

I would still let it go empty and be out of toilet paper every now and then.
Load More Replies...A shameful display of toilet paper wealth. There are people out there who only have one or two 20 roll packs.
That's not emergency, I think that's the one that's in use.
Load More Replies...A good move when we all thought toilet paper was needed to solve the COVID problem.
....oh and mine! (All of mine, that is)
Load More Replies...Finn: If anything does connect I think the zip ties really will make the connection - right?
Load More Replies...Just needs a bit of electrical tape over it, and bam, ya got a pro job there.
A cornered toilet? I wonder what the rest of this space looks like that someone actually thought this was a good idea?!?!
For some reason, the ‘Typical Rykozhop’ Instagram account appears to have been recently deactivated. We’re not sure about the reason, but we’re hoping it comes back online to entertain all of us with its design spookiness in the near future.
Tim Antoniuk, an Associate Professor of Design Studies at the University of Alberta, previously spoke to Bored Panda about design projects, who’s responsible for the final vision of a home during building, and how important communication is.
How annoying is this? I have ocd and I just couldn't be in this kitchen for long
I don’t have ocd but still couldn’t be in this kitchen for long.
Load More Replies...Hellooooo! Besides the oven/cooktop alignment issue, does anyone else notice how the cabinets, countertop, and wall covering clash? It's hideous!
It is. I wonder if it was a 'we have these items from another job so let's make do'. It's hard to imagine someone choosing this!!
Load More Replies...No, not really. Liking symmetry/order has nothing to do with OCD. It's a myth created by movies and TV shows.
Load More Replies...At least it still connects to the other tiles around it keeping that flow going.
This must be in a church - it's so holy! ( Sorry pandas had to do it!)
Looks like the screws have pulled out so they reversed the hinge to put them in a different position, and there may even have been another kind of hinge there before. Methinks the problem is with the wood.
It looks to me like someone is trying to use a cabinet hinge to hang a door, and of course a cabinet hinge will not support that kind of weight.
Load More Replies...Seems to me like they switched the sides, but it looks like a shootout
According to Tim, the designer in charge of the building project has to make sure that their and their client’s vision is focused and becomes reality. That’s why it’s vital to communicate very clearly and avoid any ‘fuzziness’ or leave room for too many interpretations.
"Certainly, this is frustrating and it puts extra pressure on the designer, but everything, in my view, rests in the designer's hand. This is why some of the most outstanding designers in the world have such a deep knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, of the problems that can happen during installation,” Tim explained to Bored Panda about the important role that designers play during projects. Their responsibilities go deeper than some of us would think at first glance.
Please use the toilet with your legs placed on the left. Also, please be nice to shift a little for proper access to the rest
Omg, this reminds me of one of my horrible toilet dreams where I can't find a suitable toilet to use.
I can relate so much!! I see so often dreams where I'm desperately looking for a toilet, or there is a toilet but people are looking at me.... it's the most common dream i see when I'm very stressed
Load More Replies...The awkward shuffle past other cinemagoers has officially been beaten
What the hell is that rag on the first toilet used for - and someone point out where the toilet paper is PLEASE!
WHY WOULD U HAVE NOT 1 NOT 2 BUT 4 TOILETS IN ONE PLACE WITH NO LEGROOM!?! someone explain this catastrophic design
I want to say I'm a German grammar Nazi, but that could be interpreted very badly
Load More Replies...What's inside the hole? And as I am staring at it, it looks like its breathing. Yes I know its photo, but my brain is telling me it's breathing.
This looks like one of those games where you are supposed to save the goldfish by opening the correct valves but you "accidentally" flood it with toxic waste every time ;-)
Hahahaha, exactly my first thought. Actually my favorite- although it’s difficult to decide 😌
Load More Replies...The underneath of my kitchen sink is more complicated than any plumber need have made it!!
Load More Replies...It looks like someone had a problem with a settling foundation and decided to just keep buying more PVC to keep the toilet working.
"It's hard, but that's why the best designers get paid so well for their outstanding work. They do great design/aesthetic work, but they also create efficiencies and they foresee and spot (some) problems from happening,” the design expert said.
That looks like a firecracker explosion. Working in an all boys school, you get pretty familiar with the sight
Yes, my godson's brother wanted to know what happens when you out fireworks in toilet. Well this is what happens, except in his case whole porcelain seat part broke as well and water went everywhere.
Load More Replies...I didn't know they made toilets with plastic tanks. I'm assuming forgotten lit candles
All water molecules contain two hydrogen atoms, just plotting, just biding their time . . .
Plus oxygen, to give the explosion some breath! It's weird water isn't flammable.
Load More Replies...It's just the cistern and the seat. I had an external plastic reservoir that was placed around the 2000's and you can still find them. But around that time built in reservoirs really became the standard in The Netherlands.
Load More Replies...If this is from somewhere where it snows in the winter, you could use these stairs to get up to the walkway, and to slide back down to the road after few steps. Slippery slope.
I have the same question... Is it stairs filled with asphalt?
Load More Replies...I don't really mind the wall, it's just pattern, but why are the shower curtain so low?
why is the shower curtain tilted? wait...is the bathroom tilted? or, am i tilted?
Load More Replies...What is this, dazzle camouflage? It's the perfect recipe to slip in the bathroom...
However good you might be, it’s still impossible to plan for everything. Sooner or later, something will go wrong. But a way to make as few mistakes from happening as possible is by keeping the builders on your side. "Many jobs cannot just stop because a designer is not onsite or is not able to be reached. That said, builders need to honor the designer's vision, but again, if there is 'fuzziness' in the drawings or plans, decisions will be made by people that we may not want to make them."
Ah, that reveals the solution: This is a work in progress; socket yet to come.
Load More Replies...I know exactly what happened here and I get it. They needed airconditioning in the room but since it's so high up, it's hard fixing the condenser at that position where the blower is inside.
They could have upgraded the existing condenser for both units though
Load More Replies...Did any one notice there seems to be another one on the balcony wall. the one on the black wall I guess is plugged in through a hole in the brick. Someone ain't got a full deck!
They are separate single are conditioning units probably bought at different times. One was installed very nicely, the other one not so much
Load More Replies...You'd take the cable and run it down the side of the architrave on the left of the photo (the image is small so I hope that's what I'm seeing). Who runs a cable down the centre of any wall like that? If the cable that comes with the item is too short, get an electrician in to do it properly. DIY electrics are a very common cause of fire.
Load More Replies...According to Tim, a good project comes together when builders follow through with the designer’s vision, there’s ample communication, there are great drawings and visuals, and the designer is “exceptionally” well-educated in construction. "We exist in a field that is ever-changing with the introduction of new materials, new construction requirements, and restrictions," the expert noted.
Someone used chunks of wood to fill a hole in a pipe that rusted through.
Load More Replies...On naval boats/ships sailors are trained to plug leaks in this way. It is highly effective in an emergency. I have to admit though that this is a tad extreme.
Just to expand on this: Not sure how common it is today, but back in the day this was how you fixed a leak on a sub/ship. Wooden shims hammered into place, which would then swell to seal it better. Not a permanent fix, but it'll get you back to port.
Load More Replies...this should be included in the previous bp "there was an attempt" post
This is still the best and safest way to plug a leaking flammable liquid container!
I really don't want to be pedantic, but it's STILL LEAKING
Load More Replies...Ok, it could have been done on the Titanic, but in this case, it's harder to justify
In some countries that would be against regulations - you have to make electrical junction boxes accessible. I suppose they could put a little hatch in the false ceiling...
Load More Replies...I do have a friend who is totally broken and he is fine with the same condition, even for the shower. Only half of his apartment has power
This was a common sight in residential history when electrical outlets first became available in homes. Homeowners would get an outlet installed on the ceiling because the light was the only source of electrical wiring. Then they would run cords to the outlet. They would soon need more plugs so they rig'em up in dangerous ways off the one outlet. A lot of fires were caused.
It needs one handle on the outside too cause they will still yell from the outside
Load More Replies...The bedrock of everything, though, is cheesy but tested and true: clear and honest communication. "It is simple to say, but communication and having an outstanding relationship with the builder is critically important. At 'Architure,' we constantly visit and hang out with the Trades. We like to talk with the people that have 'boots-on-the-ground.' These are the people that are literally building our products and spaces. If you piss these guys off, treat them poorly, or don't communicate well, they can ruin a project. It may sound flippant, but we see these people as our partners."
I guess my initial question is.. Why not just remove the cabinet entirely? The odd cut out to "fit" the toilet makes the whole space look worse
Is that insulation or is it supporting the plumbing - is it plumbing - what the hell - RUN!
Right! I don't know what I'm looking at, but no matter what this is supposed to be it looks messed up
Load More Replies...I used to flip houses and I would always add $2000 to the budget for crap just like this, the unseen!
Actually, I don't see it at all, thankfully. I guess you do if it's your line of work.
Load More Replies...Looks like a rotten wooden frame they just put a lot of industrial glue om
The look on the face of the plumber who comes to rectify this atrocity? Priceless.
Teacher: shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Student (years later): hold my beer
I suppose you could put a corner shelf in and make it a feature. Put a pretty throw rug over the massive hole and voila!
Escape hatch from crappy place - but does it lead to another crappy place?
And with water heating you know there's an infestation of silverfish and sow bugs and those wormy things
A bit earlier, Tim went into more depth about good and bad designs with Bored Panda. "Quite often, this relates to ergonomics and the usability or functionality of the products and services and systems. Having said that, I think far too many people expect poor design that doesn’t really work well," he said.
Worst caulk job ever, bowl not anchored to the floor. Look out when aunt Diane comes to visit. Much tilting.
It may well be that there are no retaining screws, but the fitter may have found that the tiles were very hard and drilling may have risked cracking them, so it could be fixed with epoxy and the white is just grout (messy job though!).
The toilet should have been taken up, the floor tiled, and then the toilet re-installed.
Itamized bill: Light bulb $1.00, instalation fee $300.00, wiring $18,000.27.
While you two get the sledge hammer - I'll get a rug!
Load More Replies...Actually need to see the rest of the floor before judging this one.
Tim believes that good design is “intuitive, deeply sympathetic and empathetic to the user at all levels, and at some level, it is emotional.” According to him, good design “is a catalyst for giving us feelings.” The expert added that we can learn how to create high-quality and good designs, as it’s a skill like any other. However, we should, first of all, unlearn any bad skills that we’ve made a habit of.
I think so too, but they didn't even frame that straight! They tried to line the wallpaper up w the crooked frame job, and now the wallpaper isn't lined up w the floor! Makes me dizzy!
Load More Replies...The wallpaper is loppy too... nothing good to see here.
Load More Replies...I know the heat register is crooked but is the hole it is it strait or not?
They laid the wallpaper at a slant to try and keep you from noticing that, but we all still noticed.
Load More Replies...Why do people think partly completed work makes it funny? The job is not done.
Overuse of kerbstones - done properly you'd not need all of those. Looks to me like they're doing a bodge job by making use of what they have, instead of getting the right things in the first place.
Load More Replies...If the wall is strapped and supported properly, this isn't much different than stone work or chinked logs. It will be further filled, insulated, then covered I'm sure.
A-HA, CAUGHT RED HANDED! You, Sir, Amigo with the headband! Slowly step away from that...uh, wall? That headband is too tight, your cutting off the circulation to your brain!
Large white is waste pipe from toilets, sinks etc. Blue pipe is cold water feed. Insulated pipes are probably central heating feeds. I'm worried about how the main sewage pipe is patched using screw bands and a piece of cut pipe
this screwband solution is legit. I had the access disc of my main sewer line rust off and that is how they repaired it. solid so far
In the cold part of Europe we have coil-pipes in the bathrooms (we call them "snakies" 🐍). I suppose this was a DIY attempt?
Snakies! I love it, consider it stolen by an unscrupulous yankee.
Load More Replies...I'm pretty sure the fail here is the thin, flammable curtain sitting directly on the radiator, not the overall room. At least, I hope someone isn't so cruel as to mock someone in poverty...
Load More Replies...I thought the shower was a fridge at first, and thought the only weird thing here was that the curtain wasn't even.
I saw a bootleg apartment like this in Los , Angeles once. Didn't rent it.
The shower in the kitchen is not new to mee. I rented an appartement in Antwerp with that sollution.
Many people forget that running water has not always been around. When running water pipes were available, the kitchen was first to get it. As it was often the warmest room, tubs were sometimes installed there.
A can or two of that spray foam used in a previous post will fix that right up!
I have similar legs in my workshop made from pipe leftovers. The radiator is to heavy for the wall and this is absolutely fine solution
I think it's underneath (the plastic pipe). Looks like you need to be outside the room to turn the water on and off...
Load More Replies...No problem. Where's the mainline to the house? That will get it done
Load More Replies...Somebody has left their two left hands on the floor - now I understand!
It looks like a gas pressure valve and shut off it's very close to a radiator which is a major explosion fire hazard
Load More Replies...Obviously a toilet (probably broken) has been removed and we see the project before the new one is installed. Nothing to see here!
Except the size of that pipe in the wall!! I’d like to see the toilet that was connected to that!
Load More Replies...The pipe in the wall is pretty big to be plumbing for a toilet. Could it be a decorative propane/natural gas heater stove that's been removed?
Interesting that those floor tiles are pre-printed to fit the shape of a toilet.
Load More Replies...I think most of these were really finished works and I mean this in the worst way!
Some of these appear to be other countries. Maybe they do not have the same materials available?
Actually most of these pics appear to be from less privileged houses in third world countries. I believe that these kind of posts clearly show that privileged countries identify their way as the proper way.
This is a fine collection of proof that many human beings were conceived in "what goes wrong when bloodlines breed" or "when alcohol is involved".
I had to quit reading - this was kicking my OCD into overdrive.
