I allowed my three legged rescue-lab Maya to pick a toy or treat (or both!) in the pet store always! Because nothing better than seeing how happy a rescue pet looks at you after being adopted into a loving furever home! Animal Rescuers often pay a high price, as they often have to bid farewell too early. But it's so very very worth it and will always make their heart grow, with every single paw print on it!

Bored Panda reached out to Yulia Popyk, an animal behavior expert from Petcube Emergency Fund who shared some insights into how the worldwide pandemic sparked a surge in pet adoption, as well as some tips on what you should know before adopting a pet into your family.

Popyk said that there are a number of reasons for the surge in pet adoptions during the COVID-19 pandemic. “First, many people were (and perhaps many still are) spending more time at home and were looking for a companion. Second, some people have been looking for a sense of normalcy during these uncertain times. Third, pets can provide emotional support and help reduce stress and anxiety. Last but not least, adopting a pet from a shelter or rescue organization can help save a life.” Popyk added that this fact itself already provides enough motivation and inspiration during hard times like these.

Moreover, during the active phases of the COVID-19 pandemic, many people have been home more often and had more time to care for a pet. “Pets also provide companionship and help reduce stress and anxiety.” Popyk believes that whatever the reason, the bottom line is that people are finding joy and companionship in their new pets during these difficult times.

The pandemic has had a big impact on pet adoptions, with many people now interested in adopting a pet. While animal shelters have seen an increase in adoptions, the growing trend for people to adopt rescue animals seems like it’s not going anywhere.

“Some people may be more interested in adopting a pet now that the pandemic is over, while others may have lost interest or may not feel ready to commit to a pet at this time,” she added.

Adopting a pet is a huge responsibility, so we asked the animal expert what a person should consider before making this decision. Popyk argues that it’s good to start from asking yourself if you’re prepared to commit to taking care of another living creature for the duration of its life. “This includes feeding, walking, exercising, and providing veterinary care as needed,” she added.

You also have to think whether you have the financial resources necessary to care for a pet. “Veterinary care can be expensive, and pets also require food, toys, and other supplies.” Another thing to consider is whether you have enough space in your home and yard for a pet. This is because some pets and breeds require more space than others.

“Do you have the time to care for a pet? Pets need attention and exercise every day. Are you prepared to deal with pet hair, stains, and other messes? Are you prepared to deal with additional noise in your home? Are you prepared to deal with the extra work involved in potty training a puppy or kitten?” Popyk commented.

A potential owner should consider whether they have the time, space, and resources to care for a pet. “They should also research the specific needs of the animal they are considering and make sure they are prepared to meet those needs,” the animal expert added.

I suspect shelters don't have the time nor the professional ability to train every dog they get. Some shelters have so many animals that they can't spend much time with any one of them.

From a video game called Fallout 4. typical Commonwealth canine, Dogmeat is capable of tracking a man's scent for miles, an example is when he must track Kellogg in Getting a Clue. While he doesn't really have an owner, he is a loyal and faithful companion to those he accompanies, according to Mama Murphy when the Sole Survivor speaks to her in the Museum of Freedom in Concord, she states that Dogmeat "is his own man."

I have a cat who’s tiny like that. Always was. Some a*****e dumped her in our yard all by herself when she was 5-6 weeks old and didn’t even weigh a full pound yet. Tabitha is 2 years old now, and doesn’t even weigh 7 lbs, but she’s healthy, bright-eyed, energetic, bold, feisty, and walks all over everyone else (4 legged, including a dog, and 2 legged), even though we’re all between 1.5 (our senior cat) and 30 times (my hubby) her size—-and we all let her because she’s also the sweetest and most affectionate little clown cat, and keeps us laughing with her antics.

I swear that the smaller they are the more "supreme overlord" vibes they put out. My 5yo is 6-7ish lbs and absolutely rules our house. (We found her in a dumpster at 4weeks old so there may be some correlation there too lol) We let her own us because all of the purrs, headbutts, and cuddles are worth it.

When asked how long it takes for an adopted pet to get used to their new family, Popyk said that although it varies, “generally it takes a few weeks for an adopted pet to get used to their new family.”

“This can vary depending on the animal’s age, general health, temperament, prior living situation, and the amount of time and effort the new family is willing to put into the transition. Generally, it will take a few days to a few weeks for an animal to settle into their new home,” she explained.

A lot of times aggressive cats have little to no mental stimulation (playtime, toys, puzzles) ,too much sensory stimulation (sights, smells, noises) , and various other reasons include :trauma(abusive/neglectful owners, bad run ins with neighborhood kids, etc.) ,lack of socialization ,overcrowding(mummy I want to pet the kitty)

As a regular volunteer at an animal shelter I can say that cats in the shelter are more aggressive than in a home. Your in their space when you go to the room they are in and also they are cramped, over stimulated, and have to listen to other cats meowing, growling and hissing along with the constant sound of dogs barking, growling, and howling. This "aggressive cat" is just a kitty who needed a new home and a calmer environment.

The most important thing is to be patient and give them time to adjust. “With the help of the Petcube interactive dog camera, you can always check on your newly adopted or an oldie pet at home, even when you have come back to your office work life,” Popyk suggested.

As a stray he never knew when he would get food. It will take him time and many regular meals to develop food security. We went through that last year with a stray. Unfortunately after several months we ended up having to put her down. She was FIV+ and it had pretty much destroyed her lungs. Her breathing was awful to listen to.

Our first greyhound started off thieving. Previous owner said he was a thief. Well since it took months to get him back to a good weight and the rescue refused to let us see the "before" photo, I can only assume that previous owner didn't feed him. He stopped thieving in about 6 weeks, when he realised regular meals were now a thing. RIP Henry

loooooooooooooooooooooooooool, pit combos are always funny. went to a dog park some years ago and all of a sudden there was quite a commotion when a pit looking dog with beagle coloring came in. you'd have thought it was a celeb cause everyone threw their phones out to get a picture.

I met a pit/dachshund mix a while ago. Walked towards me and looked all pit, then turned and the body is all dachshund. Really looked like a big pit head on a dachshund body. It was hilariously cute.

I once saw a german shepherd dog/ corgi mix. looked like a full blood GSD but on tiny legs. Scared me at first because he was in a cage at work (vet) and had shredded the paper so, it looked like he had fallen through the bottom!! But nope, just short legs!

Most people are really only familiar with mini dachshunds, but standard sized doxies are in the 30-pound range, making a "pit bull" x doxie cross entirely possible, but much more plausible is that this is a "pit bull" x basset hound mix. Dwarfism in dogs is a dominant trait, meaning only one parent needs to pass the gene along to the pups for the pups to have the trait themselves. Pit x basset mixes were popular for a while and were intentionally bred, especially in the southern US, specifically for their novelty. Thankfully they never caught on. It is wildly cruel to put an active, athletic dog on short, stubby legs that have been deformed by dwarfism, especially considering that there's a direct link between this deformation and physical discomfort, pain, and mobility issues.

It may not be a good solution for having a full time pet, but maybe if you had some Benadryl and someone to drive you, you could go to a cat cafe or play with cats at your local shelter? I'm allergic, but it's not bad, so I've got cats and non drowsy allergy medicine. I'm usually fine but I can always tell when the furnace filter needs changed.

I was allergic to cats all of my life too. Well that was until my mid 50's and I let my son adopt one. We now have three. Turned out it was the litter that I was allergic too the most. Using Arm & Hammer Cloud Control Platinum Multi-Cat Clumping Cat Litter w/ Hypoallergenic Light Scent has made a huge difference.

No, “someone” just needs to be taken out in the woods and treated as prey themself. What an a*****e. Please report the threat to Animal Control, so they can keep an eye on that bastard.

    This Is Guillermo!

    This Is Guillermo!

I'd share our black kitty. We adopted him from a cat cafe that takes in shelter cats only. We named him Guillermo, after the familiar in What We Do in The Shadows, and brought him home. After a few weeks, I looked through the paperwork they gave us with him that wasn't health related or immediately important. In there, I found a paper from his short time at Petco. His description on it read, "I'm a TV star!". I was like, "sorry, what?". It continued to explain that he was rescued from a hoarding situation and during a news interview at the site, he was filmed a few times sitting in a cage looking VERY confused.

Since then, he's fit in really well with our other cat Bobbi, and is best friends with our dog, Jack.

Here's the video. He first appears at around 0:50 timemark. A few more times after that too.

Sadly yes 😢 A brace may be appropriate for puppies with early hip dysplasia symptoms. This may just help with pressure on the hip joints to press them into place.
