30 Unique And Informative Maps Shared On This Group That Might Change Your Perspective On Things (New Pics)
While most of us use Google Maps and GPS on a daily basis, it’s pretty rare to find real fans of cartography, the study and practice of making and using maps. If you were ever into geography or history as a kid, the chances are you’re not much of a map person.
But today, we’re going to turn this around. Combining science, aesthetics and technique, cartography builds on the premise that reality can be modeled in ways that communicate spatial information effectively. And below we collected some of the most unusual, intriguing and informative examples of maps that will put our reality in a whole new realm.
Thanks to this awesome corner of Reddit (whose name we cannot mention thanks to the notorious internet police), there’s a LOT to uncover! Get ready to boost that inner adventurer of yours since we’re about to go places you’ve never even known existed. Psst! More awesome maps can be found in our previous posts here, here and here.

Countries That Have Had Female Heads Of State Or Government In The Last Century
Previously, Bored Panda spoke with the founder of the subreddit named Patrick, who shared some very interesting insights into the wondrous world of maps. According to him, there are many different reasons one chooses to make a map. “Sometimes for navigation, sometimes for showing statistical phenomena, and sometimes for fantasy. While artistic skill helps, it is not absolutely necessary. The important thing is to make it easy for users to glean useful information. Most maps should have a thesis or a story it is going to tell and this needs to be told through the map.”

Today, the subreddit of maps is home to 1.7 million devoted members, making it a Reddit powerhouse. But just like any other online community on the platform, changes are inevitable. Patrick told us that the subreddit is doing well, but “Reddit overall over the last few years has shifted towards mobile-friendly content. Reddit used to be only for desktop users. In the early days, the content was mostly large files that were wallpaper-sized. They were great for zooming in and exploring in detail." Those days are now gone.
The moderator also said that nowadays, "Reddit is overwhelmed" with users who only use it on their smartphones and other mobile devices. "For better or worse, that is how it is and that's the trend for the future. The subreddit contains a lot of bite-size Instagram-style statistical maps. The community upvotes this content and if that's what they want, that's the direction the sub will take," Patrick told us some time ago.

I cannot imagine how atheism is a threat, but only from my perspective. If someone knows about this or lives in these areas I would love to hear what you have to share

Date Formats Worldwide
the pink order doesn't make sense. but then you see where it's used and it makes all the sense.
When I have seen MDY used, the speaker also says the date in that order too, so like "March 1st 1999". I believe that is the reason why it's used. I use DMY or YMD depending on which language I'm speaking, I don't think I have even put the month first in general speech myself.
Load More Replies...I prefer yy.mm.dd, but I also do a boatload of computer filing. Makes it easier to sort.
Computers add dates to files themselves though - so how are you using it? Curious, not judging. 🙂
Load More Replies...Germany is not using the YMD format AT ALL, unless communicating internationally. I have no idea why this map makes it look like that format is used equally with DMY.
I was in America just before turning 21, my birthday is 1st April and I went middle of January that year - given how they write the date and the fact their drinking age is 21 meant they would still serve me drinks as they assumed my birthday was 4th January - so that worked in my favour. I even got given some free drinks as belated birthday gift from some bartenders - I wasn’t about to correct them given I’m from a country where the drinking age is 18 so wouldn’t been weird to be suddenly underage. Doesn’t help I’ve always looked younger - I’m 39 now and still get asked for I’d because of this think 25 nonsense
Write it the way you speak it. I've personally never heard a native English speaker, from anywhere, say 18 March 2007, so it makes a ton of sense to write it that way for us.
Whenever I travel internationally (which is often) I always have to stop and think when I fill out a form asking for the date.
Yeah, that's called the "international date format". I use it even though I am american. I also use military time. I prefer to be efficient and precise, rather than use social convention.
Load More Replies...Gray means no data available from that country. In every single map that was ever created, gray means that.
Load More Replies...When in doubt in Canada, just assume it's the US way of M/D/Y. That's pretty universal on all our best before and expiry dates.

Eu Countries Pushing To Label Nuclear Power As Green Energy
Nuclear energy isn't as dirty as people think. Actually it's one of the cleanest. You don't need much space for it as you would need for solar or windmill. It is constant and reliable as you don't rely on wind/sunshine. The only thing you need is water to cool the reactor. However, if something goes wrong then the results are disastrous. Is it worth the risk?

Abortion Law In Europe
As I understand it, abortion is legal upon request in the UK. Though technically there has to be a risk to a woman's health it was ruled that "the continuance of a pregnancy is always more dangerous to the physical welfare of a woman than having an abortion, a state of affairs which is said to allow a situation of de facto abortion on demand to prevail".
