Wikipedia was launched in 2001 and has been growing at different rates ever since. As of October 2025, its English version has over 7,080,000 articles. However, not all of them are safe for work.
Last week, Reddit user Herequeerandgreat asked people to share the most disturbing entries they’ve stumbled upon in the online encyclopedia. Whether it’s due to the Halloween season or some internal human morbid curiosity, the discussion has caught on.
We went through thousands of comments and hand-picked the controversial ones, on the off-chance you're looking for a topic for your next rabbit-hole deep dive. Proceed at your own risk.

"War Crimes" in general. Then "Japanese War Crimes".
I like to think that I have a pretty strong stomach. I have a morbid curiosity. I enjoy horror and true crime..and I've seen more gore/shock images than I ever should have, but the descriptions and photos of what happened there made me physically ill when I first encountered them.
The fact that Japan as a whole has never really had to recognize or reckon with what happened there and in other places makes me really upset. Yes, the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were horrific war crimes in themselves...but they don't erase Japan's guilt. You can be both a victim AND a perpetrator.
Read Unbroken, one mans first hand account of being one of their prisoners of war. It's harrowing.
It's horrifying. The part about the duck made me sick. I couldn't watch the movie version of it.
Load More Replies...My Bampi was a POW on the Burma Railway inWW2. He never spoke of what happened to him but he utterly loathed the Japanese and refused to by anything from a Japanese company.
Yes, they're both victim and perpetrator, they've also changed. They're an ally now and they behave as such, everyone can learn and change.
In order to learn and change, you first need to show genuine remorse for your crimes. Japan hasn’t.
Load More Replies...I knew someone who was a Japanese POW and he had the most awful PTSD or as they called it in those days 'shell shock'. The poor man was very frail and in and out of a psychiatric hospital . He had no finger or toenails because they had ripped them out and they never regrew. Some of the things his wife told me he'd had done to him were horrific. They should have been held to account just as the Germans were. They were probably worse.
Wouldn't call dropping the b**b a war crime. After k*****g 6 million civilians brutally, I'd say they had it coming.
Sandy Hook Elementary.
Reflxing:
Still can’t believe that happened and how it caused absolutely no change. 6 year olds are so little.
Look up Dunblane school shooting in the UK. After that trustworthy gun owners were literally queuing up to hand in their hand guns for the amnesty as the law was being changed. British people wanted to protect small children from being shot in the face more than they wanted to keep their guns. We haven’t had a school shooting since.
Same here, Port Arthur, Tasmania, 1996. Not a school shooting but a mass shooting. Gun reform was immediately passed by the government of the time (thank you, Mr Howard - our then PM) and there has been no mass shooting here since.
Load More Replies...A mass shooting took place there. Many people deny that it happened. Those people have lost court cases (like the human gas bag Alex Jones)
Ah a few school shootings is worth it for the 2nd amendment, or so someone said
"Unit 731." I thought I’d seen dark stuff before, but that one genuinely made me close my laptop and go for a walk.
Japanese station for chemical research and human experimentation during the war.
This is as disturbing, if not more so than the r**e of nanking.
Load More Replies...It’s a horrible shame that Japan hasn’t properly apologized for those heinous crimes. Japan committed some of the worst acts humans are capable for in WW2. Germany apologized for the H*******t. Japan still diminishes or outright denies the crimes. Shame!
Its even worse, When America found out about unit 731 they where given a choice: Get everybody who worked at the camp arrested and in jail, But then they would destroy all the research and every thing they had gathered (A lot of our modern medical knowledge is coming from the horrible tests they did at unit 731) The other option they gave was letting every single person who worked there get of scot fee, no repercussions what so ever. And they would hand over all their data. You can guess what they chose. The only thing they did was make unit 731 a museum.

Another 78% agree that the internet has "never been worse" when it comes to differentiating between what's real and what's artificial.
Social media posts (48%), news articles (34%), and chatbots (32%) are the top three most suspected sources when it comes to AI-generated or misleading content.
I can’t stand The Nutty Putty Cave and the story. Horrible and devestating tale. Just reading the story makes me claustrophobic.
I feel the worst for his poor wife. She was pregnant at the time and was waiting outside the cave while they tried to rescue him. 😥
To me, it's a case of FAFO. His last hours must have been terrifying but I can't really feel sorry for him: if I had a pregnant wife at home, it wouldn't come to my mind to go squeeze myself in a cave for "fun".
He didn't do it on purpose. He was mistaken about where he was. He'd been there before and thought it was a different passage.

War crimes in the Russo-Ukrainian war.
The fact that this kind of barbarism exists in modern societies while russians openly threaten to cross european borders after Ukraine falls.
Those polled believe that 50% of the news stories and articles they come across online have some element of AI, whether it be images or the actual written content.
But perhaps the most concerning part of the results was that less than a third (31%) of respondents are confident in their ability to differentiate whether, for example, a product or service review was written by an AI or an actual human being.
Little bit of a different flavour from the rest of these:
Timeline of the Far Future
I defy you to read through the whole thing for the first time and not end up disturbed.
vampire-mom:
I actually find this stuff really comforting. I spend so much time worrying about the damage we are doing to the earth that the knowledge that someday human beings will be extinct and the earth will heal and give rise to new species and the cycle will begin a new really settles something in me. even knowing the earth itself will die and its atoms will join the fabric of the universe in a new way and then the universe itself will die before another big bang happens and we get to do it all over again just feels right to me.
Read "Earth Abides", or think about 2020 - during the pandemic - the earth heals pretty quickly without man mucking about... I think there was an article in Omni magazine that discussed how quickly evidence of man would disappear - less time than you would think!
Oh yeah that article scares me. Nothing to do with what vampire-mom was saying, just that the sheer scale of time and space and nothingness kind of gets to me.
this is nothing new; we have our time here on this planet, and it is limited, like all other species; it will end eventually, giving way to new species to take our place... and so on, and so on. just means the world and its way marches on. Earth will always find a way to maintain its Balance. I think it's So arrogant of humans to actually believe that we can do something to *Stop* it. Try as we might... we will fail. that's the way its meant to be.
I don't think you have to hate humanity to hate what we're doing to the earth. I am amazed and awed by the progress we have made as a species in the last 100 years. I am gutted by the cost of the progress and devastated that we are the problem. It's a sad fact that we will bring about our own extinction and will be taking out most life on earth with us.

List of youngest mothers. No longer exists on wiki. Makes sense since you couldn’t protect the names of the children.
Minute-Phrase3043:
I remember this. Stumbled upon this as a teenager. I was horrified to see the list. And that was when I didn't know as much about the damage pregnancy would cause them. I never want to look at that list again.
I read a book about the Australian doctor Catherine Hamlin who cared for a lot women in Ethiopia who had fistulas from challenging births. One reason they got them was the lack of medical in remote regions, but another big contributing factor was that many were married as soon as they got their period and were impregnated straight away. Though they are able to get pregnant, many young women's bodies are not ready to give birth. Their hips aren't wide enough (among other things) and they often have 'impacted' labours. Sometimes days of labour with no birth, and no medical care. This puts so much pressure on their vaginas they tear and can lead to both bladder and bowel incontinence. Dr Hamlin performed hundreds of surgeries to repair these fistulas, sometimes fixing decades of damage. This was mostly girls of 12-14 in labour, so I don't want to even think about how much worse it is for even younger girls.
Yes, but generally you need some info to go off of, as well as state who you are, and why you wish to obtain the information and often pay a fee as well. Its a bit more of a prossess then just googling a complied list that strips away all anonymity anonymously for entertainment purposes.

Fatal insomnia is my pick.
Medium-Escape-8449:
Every time I have trouble sleeping for like one night I convince myself it’s this.
I was once up for four days, after losing my job and healthcare, massive stress. I thought I'd have to check myself into a hospital unit. The scariest thing I've ever been through.
2 days. Just couldn't sleep. Nothing dramatic was happening. I have a variety of sleep problems, but that was terrible.
Load More Replies...They touched on this in an episode of Special Victims Unit. It seems to be centered on a couple of families in Italy.
It's an extremely rare disease and it's hereditary, you don't catch it like a cold. Another perk is that you're gonna die quickly when you get the symptoms but they can happen at any age. In short, even if you're a carrier, you have a pretty good chance to die of other causes before the disease happens.
I wonder how much sleep deprivation it takes to become fatal. What about moms of newborns? They wake up, need changing, breastfeed for 40 minutes, pump milk for another 20 minutes, fresh clothes and bath for baby, change baby again, put baby to sleep, wash baby clothes and sterilize bottles, mom showers, baby is now awake again... And repeat and repeat for months on end! I was full on hallucinating & couldn't tell reality from dreaming. Maybe - Maybe -- got a half hour cumulative sleep every other day. It definitely took a huge toll and caused permanent damage to my body!
I once did 'no sleeping' for the 40 hour famine, and it honestly wasn't that bad, but since then I've learned how much damage lack of sleep can do. Now, if I don't take one of two of my meds, it's impossible to sleep, and it's pretty torturous.

Russia is a stark example of how even states can exploit online information systems to manipulate public perception. Researchers have documented how Russian operatives used a network of automated sites, known as the Pravda network, to flood the internet with propaganda targeting Western audiences beyond the war in Ukraine.
The operation extended to Wikipedia as well. Russia's human contractors edit articles to include links to Pravda network sites, exploiting the platform's credibility and the fact that many AI systems give special weight to Wikipedia content. Because Wikipedia serves as a trusted source for AI training data, these manipulations allowed false narratives to spread further and faster, affecting the answers that chatbots provided to users on topics such as the Ukraine conflict. (Experts warn that this approach is highly scalable and inexpensive compared with traditional influence operations. The same methods could be used by other actors—from political operatives to commercial competitors—to skew AI outputs in their favor.)
So the bottom line is that, even though it's fun to click around Wikipedia and fall down rabbit holes, at the end of the day, each of us is responsible for verifying the information we consume.
Cyclopia. It's a birth defect in which the brain fails to divide into two hemispheres. It's incompatible with life, as babies with Cyclopia are either stillborn or [pass away] shortly after birth. As the name implies, these babies have only one eye, and some of them don't even have a nose.
I’m a Christian, but I think that the strongest argument against the existence of God is this: if there is an omnipotent, benevolent God, how can he allow such things to happen? I don’t have the answer, and I don’t envy any theologian who tries to give one. I can only desperately believe and fervently hope that those poor creatures will immediately go to heaven after they die. Maybe they are angels sent in a horrible disguise to awaken our moribund compassion.
I'm an atheist, but I can still give you an answer to that question. If God exists, he does not directly intervene in the lives of humans. He set creation in motion and did not intervene after that. That is what deists believe, including people like Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson.

I believe the David Parker Ray.
Wikipedia page used to contain the audio file for his tape he would play to his victims. I know for certain there are snippits of the transcript still on there and just reading his words are absolutely disgusting.
I also had a year long phase when I was like 16 where I was really interested in historical fires and human crushes. But those are stories that have made me more aware of my surroundings, I am much more cautious in crowds, and it's also very interesting to see how tragedies force safety innovation. For example, the Victoria Hall crush in 1883 lead to the invention of push bars on doors.
I really wish there was some way for people to give a brief idea of what happened, so I wouldn't be so tempted to google the info myself.

I’ve seen the footage of this incident. It happened so quickly. I can’t imagine being stuck in that situation, hoping for rescue that would never come. Absolutely heartbreaking and a disgraceful choice on the company's part.
There's NO FOOTAGE of this event. That person must be thinking of the other accident when the dive bell detached from the ship and the divers ran out of air before they could be rescued. The Byford incident was a decompression explosion caused by human error when someone didn't follow the correct procedure. The poor divers died a horrible death - one of them was forcibly dismembered because he was sucked through a crack in the door.
The wiki page for Fred West always makes for a pretty disturbing and lengthy read.
I recently watched a documentary about the timeline of the police investigation, and saw footage of him helping the police find where the bodies were. He was so unperturbed that the people around him all knew what he had done and just being matter of fact. It was very odd. Like he just had no grasp of his victims as actual living people with their own lives and feelings, but rather like showing someone where the water stopcock is.

All you need is a clear understanding of the size of our galaxy compared to the universal speed limit, and then consider how very, very recently we've been able to listen. And listen on media so primitive that most civilizations would have abandoned them within a couple of centuries (a miniscule amount of time). We don't even know what to look for!
Not true, there's a pretty clear consensus that the hydrogen line is a good place to start, and it's likely that other intelligent species would come to the same conclusion. The most important point is that we've only had radio for just over 100 years, compared with the millions of years since a random event that allowed mammals to take over from the dinosaurs. There's maybe 10,000 stars within 100 lightyears, so the odds on contact are pretty low. Unless a species invents faster than light travel, we won't hear from anyone for a long time.
Load More Replies...Earth is deliberately being isolated. We are too horrible for any benevolent race of sentient beings to contact. We are in a quarantine, undergoing a necessary test. The fact that we have not been visited by alien intelligent life can either be a denial or an affirmation of the existence of alien intelligent life.

Bill and Melinda Gates saved the world from Malaria. Against considerable opposition I might add. Billionaires can be philanthropists.
Problem is though, rather than money being collected by governments and directed where needed, a small number of people are able to accrue incredible wealth, and use that based on their own whims and opinions. Combating Malaria is obviously a good thing, however it's been shown their programs in Africa have created a brain drain from local health services, and as these doctors are only permitted to discuss illness related to the vaccinations, there are increases in other disease. The Bill & Melinda Gates foundation also manages it's investments based on maximum return, investing in companies that are increasing pollution, poverty and exploitation in the same countries they are working on their "pet" issues in.

I think G A shouldn't have been downvoted, as Meiwes and his victim indeed consumed the victim's pënis. Although it was not as delicious as they both had hoped.
There's an IT Crowd episode that plays on this called "Moss and the German". It's very good.
V-coding. It describes what often happens when you place trans women in men's prisons. You could probably guess what happens, but it is worse.
This isn't true, its quite clear that trans women suffer far more than trans men in prison environments.

Adolfo Constanzo is pretty tough. Basically did everything people imagined Satanists did.
Marc Dutroux.
Dutroux is "rotting" in prison, but for what I heard, he gets special treatment. I think the worst thing is his partner and accomplice being released. She was as guilty.
Dardeen family. Read at your own risk.
I was looking for Albert Fish and Junko Furuta and they were stated. Horrific reads embedded in my brain for all time. Not sure if stated yet, but the Hello Kitty case - Fan Man-Yee in Hong Kong.
Most definitely Udag Hussein. Guy was an absolutely terrible person who shouldn’t have gotten away with any of the things he did.
Merely a spelling error. Give the guy a break.

Which one of us , if at the Brenner Pass, would have voted to starve to death?
Most recent? Wikipedia entry about Yu Menglong. What it revealed about the people who effectively owned him is just awful.
A lot of the listed ones are definitely up there.
One that’s tangentially rough is punk rock figure GG Allin. His early life is succinctly disturbing.
Tarrare.
This is nowhere near as bad and evil as most of the ones posted here, but it is disturbing in its own way. This man was basically a real-life ghoul.
Not the most, but definitely disturbing is the one on Élan School, especially if you read the comic book by Joe Nobody who allegedly went through the institution.
The Franklin Expedition.
The Terror was a good TV series (albeit with supernatural elements) about the Franklin expedition. The sense of isolation is terrifying. Also very interesting is the related tale of John Torrington.
I was looking forward to that series and watched until the demonic polar bear showed up. Nope. With a shot of eye roll

He was nicknamed the Vampire of Sacramento because he drank his victims' blood and cannibalized their remains.”
Perhaps not as graphic or as consequential as the others mentioned here, but for it was the New Mexico State Penitentiary riot in 1980. Just reading how it all went down really stuck with me.
MK ultra. Never trust your government, kids!
MK Ultra sounds like a really bad rap name! Next to Luton Massive.

Vodka happened. They were exhausted, starving, and one of the last photos they took shows a vague figure looking like a yeti. They all passed out drunk and woke up to the sound of an avalanche but they went into mass psychosis thinking it was the yeti and ran out. When they came to their senses, they were already too far from the camp and died of exposure. Now, it's true no one will ever know what happened but I personally think the mass psychosis theory is a lot more believable than the idea they were zapped by a spaceship.
Or radiation or targeted by escapees from a g***g that were two other options presented in the tv series Dead Mountain

Yeah, that one's kinda lost the punch of realizing democracy was basically just a gentlemen's agreement all along, due to recent history, unfortunately.
To be fair to the Founders, they could not anticipate Florida. You can't even anticipate Florida in hindsight.
They tested several voting precincts in Palm Beach Florida from 2024. More people voted than were registered. And Republicans got a 5-6% boost in votes electronically that did not carry over to a hand count of ballots. The machines were lying or programmed to lie. Please do a Google search and read the articles. It's involved but it has been confirmed.
Then why did the GOP fight against a recount all the way to the Supreme Court?
