Wikipedia was launched in 2001 and has been growing at different rates ever since. As of October 2025, its English version has over 7,080,000 articles. However, not all of them are safe for work.

Last week, Reddit user Herequeerandgreat asked people to share the most disturbing entries they’ve stumbled upon in the online encyclopedia. Whether it’s due to the Halloween season or some internal human morbid curiosity, the discussion has caught on.

We went through thousands of comments and hand-picked the controversial ones, on the off-chance you're looking for a topic for your next rabbit-hole deep dive. Proceed at your own risk.

50 Horrifying Wikipedia Pages You Should Read At Your Own Risk "War Crimes" in general. Then "Japanese War Crimes".

I like to think that I have a pretty strong stomach. I have a morbid curiosity. I enjoy horror and true crime..and I've seen more gore/shock images than I ever should have, but the descriptions and photos of what happened there made me physically ill when I first encountered them.

The fact that Japan as a whole has never really had to recognize or reckon with what happened there and in other places makes me really upset. Yes, the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were horrific war crimes in themselves...but they don't erase Japan's guilt. You can be both a victim AND a perpetrator.

In order to learn and change, you first need to show genuine remorse for your crimes. Japan hasn’t.

I knew someone who was a Japanese POW and he had the most awful PTSD or as they called it in those days 'shell shock'. The poor man was very frail and in and out of a psychiatric hospital . He had no finger or toenails because they had ripped them out and they never regrew. Some of the things his wife told me he'd had done to him were horrific. They should have been held to account just as the Germans were. They were probably worse.

Look up Dunblane school shooting in the UK. After that trustworthy gun owners were literally queuing up to hand in their hand guns for the amnesty as the law was being changed. British people wanted to protect small children from being shot in the face more than they wanted to keep their guns. We haven’t had a school shooting since.

Its even worse, When America found out about unit 731 they where given a choice: Get everybody who worked at the camp arrested and in jail, But then they would destroy all the research and every thing they had gathered (A lot of our modern medical knowledge is coming from the horrible tests they did at unit 731) The other option they gave was letting every single person who worked there get of scot fee, no repercussions what so ever. And they would hand over all their data. You can guess what they chose. The only thing they did was make unit 731 a museum.

But as Wikipedia's database is growing, so is people's skepticism toward online resources. Earlier this year, a survey of 2,000 U.S. adults found that only 41% of them believe the content they consume online is accurate, fact-based, and created by a real human.

Another 78% agree that the internet has "never been worse" when it comes to differentiating between what's real and what's artificial.

Social media posts (48%), news articles (34%), and chatbots (32%) are the top three most suspected sources when it comes to AI-generated or misleading content.

this is nothing new; we have our time here on this planet, and it is limited, like all other species; it will end eventually, giving way to new species to take our place... and so on, and so on. just means the world and its way marches on. Earth will always find a way to maintain its Balance. I think it's So arrogant of humans to actually believe that we can do something to *Stop* it. Try as we might... we will fail. that's the way its meant to be.

I read a book about the Australian doctor Catherine Hamlin who cared for a lot women in Ethiopia who had fistulas from challenging births. One reason they got them was the lack of medical in remote regions, but another big contributing factor was that many were married as soon as they got their period and were impregnated straight away. Though they are able to get pregnant, many young women's bodies are not ready to give birth. Their hips aren't wide enough (among other things) and they often have 'impacted' labours. Sometimes days of labour with no birth, and no medical care. This puts so much pressure on their vaginas they tear and can lead to both bladder and bowel incontinence. Dr Hamlin performed hundreds of surgeries to repair these fistulas, sometimes fixing decades of damage. This was mostly girls of 12-14 in labour, so I don't want to even think about how much worse it is for even younger girls.

It's an extremely rare disease and it's hereditary, you don't catch it like a cold. Another perk is that you're gonna die quickly when you get the symptoms but they can happen at any age. In short, even if you're a carrier, you have a pretty good chance to die of other causes before the disease happens.

I wonder how much sleep deprivation it takes to become fatal. What about moms of newborns? They wake up, need changing, breastfeed for 40 minutes, pump milk for another 20 minutes, fresh clothes and bath for baby, change baby again, put baby to sleep, wash baby clothes and sterilize bottles, mom showers, baby is now awake again... And repeat and repeat for months on end! I was full on hallucinating & couldn't tell reality from dreaming. Maybe - Maybe -- got a half hour cumulative sleep every other day. It definitely took a huge toll and caused permanent damage to my body!

I once did 'no sleeping' for the 40 hour famine, and it honestly wasn't that bad, but since then I've learned how much damage lack of sleep can do. Now, if I don't take one of two of my meds, it's impossible to sleep, and it's pretty torturous.

Russia is a stark example of how even states can exploit online information systems to manipulate public perception. Researchers have documented how Russian operatives used a network of automated sites, known as the Pravda network, to flood the internet with propaganda targeting Western audiences beyond the war in Ukraine.

The operation extended to Wikipedia as well. Russia's human contractors edit articles to include links to Pravda network sites, exploiting the platform's credibility and the fact that many AI systems give special weight to Wikipedia content. Because Wikipedia serves as a trusted source for AI training data, these manipulations allowed false narratives to spread further and faster, affecting the answers that chatbots provided to users on topics such as the Ukraine conflict. (Experts warn that this approach is highly scalable and inexpensive compared with traditional influence operations. The same methods could be used by other actors—from political operatives to commercial competitors—to skew AI outputs in their favor.)

So the bottom line is that, even though it's fun to click around Wikipedia and fall down rabbit holes, at the end of the day, each of us is responsible for verifying the information we consume.

Engraving of a cyclops baby with one eye, representing disturbing Wikipedia pages that reveal dark rabbit holes online. Cyclopia. It's a birth defect in which the brain fails to divide into two hemispheres. It's incompatible with life, as babies with Cyclopia are either stillborn or [pass away] shortly after birth. As the name implies, these babies have only one eye, and some of them don't even have a nose.

I’m a Christian, but I think that the strongest argument against the existence of God is this: if there is an omnipotent, benevolent God, how can he allow such things to happen? I don’t have the answer, and I don’t envy any theologian who tries to give one. I can only desperately believe and fervently hope that those poor creatures will immediately go to heaven after they die. Maybe they are angels sent in a horrible disguise to awaken our moribund compassion.

I'm an atheist, but I can still give you an answer to that question. If God exists, he does not directly intervene in the lives of humans. He set creation in motion and did not intervene after that. That is what deists believe, including people like Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson.

50 Horrifying Wikipedia Pages You Should Read At Your Own Risk I believe the David Parker Ray.

Wikipedia page used to contain the audio file for his tape he would play to his victims. I know for certain there are snippits of the transcript still on there and just reading his words are absolutely disgusting.

I also had a year long phase when I was like 16 where I was really interested in historical fires and human crushes. But those are stories that have made me more aware of my surroundings, I am much more cautious in crowds, and it's also very interesting to see how tragedies force safety innovation. For example, the Victoria Hall crush in 1883 lead to the invention of push bars on doors.

There's NO FOOTAGE of this event. That person must be thinking of the other accident when the dive bell detached from the ship and the divers ran out of air before they could be rescued. The Byford incident was a decompression explosion caused by human error when someone didn't follow the correct procedure. The poor divers died a horrible death - one of them was forcibly dismembered because he was sucked through a crack in the door.

I recently watched a documentary about the timeline of the police investigation, and saw footage of him helping the police find where the bodies were. He was so unperturbed that the people around him all knew what he had done and just being matter of fact. It was very odd. Like he just had no grasp of his victims as actual living people with their own lives and feelings, but rather like showing someone where the water stopcock is.

The crimes of the Belgian authorities in Congo, condoned by King Leopold, are among the worst atrocities of the European colonial rule in Africa. The genocide of the Herero people, carried out by the German authorities in Namibia, belongs there as well. For some reason people rarely mention that. He was psychotic for sure. Though how much of that was always in his nature or a result of his childhood is debatable. Maybe a mixture. And don't quote me but I think he's admired and popular in Romania and/or Transylvania today.

He worked for a su*cide helpline and actually talked a bunch of people out of offing themselves. He also helped the police understand the mindset of serial k*llers to help with future investigations. I'm not saying he was a good man but no, he definitely wasn't the worst.

Thinking that mass murders in the past, which still permitted us to be born/survive, were somehow 'necessary' is a blatant case of the survivor effect. "We didn't die, so it's all right." A close relative of survivor bias, I think.

The Hypothetical explanations for the paradox heading of the Fermi Paradox page always gives me a sense of existential dread with the sheer number of progressively more unhinged and desperate attempts at trying to explain it:

    > * Extraterrestrial life is rare or non-existent
    > * Extraterrestrial intelligence is rare or non-existent
    > * Extraterrestrial intelligence is relatively new
    > * Periodic extinction by natural events
    > * Intelligent alien species have not developed advanced technologies
    > * It is the nature of intelligent life to destroy itself
    > * Only one intelligent species can exist in a given region of space
    > * Civilizations only broadcast detectable signals for a brief period of time
    > * Alien life may be too incomprehensible
    > * Expansionism is not the cosmic norm
    > * Alien species may have only settled part of the galaxy
    > * Alien species may isolate themselves in virtual worlds
    > * Artificial intelligence may not be aggressively expansionist
    > * Lack of resources needed to physically spread throughout the galaxy
    > * Information is cheaper to transmit than matter is to transfer
    > * Other species' home planets cannot support industrial economies
    > * Intelligent alien species have not developed advanced technologies
    > * Developing practical spaceflight technology is very difficult or expensive
    > * Humans are not listening properly - Radio signals cannot be straightforwardly detected at interstellar distances
    > * Humans have not listened for long enough
    > * Intelligent life may be too far away
    > * Intelligent life exists buried below the surfaces of ice planets
    > * Advanced civilizations may limit their search for life to technological signatures

All you need is a clear understanding of the size of our galaxy compared to the universal speed limit, and then consider how very, very recently we've been able to listen. And listen on media so primitive that most civilizations would have abandoned them within a couple of centuries (a miniscule amount of time). We don't even know what to look for!

Not true, there's a pretty clear consensus that the hydrogen line is a good place to start, and it's likely that other intelligent species would come to the same conclusion. The most important point is that we've only had radio for just over 100 years, compared with the millions of years since a random event that allowed mammals to take over from the dinosaurs. There's maybe 10,000 stars within 100 lightyears, so the odds on contact are pretty low. Unless a species invents faster than light travel, we won't hear from anyone for a long time.

Earth is deliberately being isolated. We are too horrible for any benevolent race of sentient beings to contact. We are in a quarantine, undergoing a necessary test. The first phase of the test is peaceful cooperation between ourselves. We keep failing that. C.S. Lewis gave that explanation in his groundbreaking science fiction work, the Space Trilogy.

Problem is though, rather than money being collected by governments and directed where needed, a small number of people are able to accrue incredible wealth, and use that based on their own whims and opinions. Combating Malaria is obviously a good thing, however it's been shown their programs in Africa have created a brain drain from local health services, and as these doctors are only permitted to discuss illness related to the vaccinations, there are increases in other disease. The Bill & Melinda Gates foundation also manages it's investments based on maximum return, investing in companies that are increasing pollution, poverty and exploitation in the same countries they are working on their "pet" issues in.

MK Ultra sounds like a really bad rap name! Next to Luton Massive.

No one in their right mind would ever trust a politician

One can be very successful in politics precisely by gaining the trust and loyalty of people not in their right minds.

Dyatlov Pass incident. It’s creepy because no one fully knows what happened.

Vodka happened. They were exhausted, starving, and one of the last photos they took shows a vague figure looking like a yeti. They all passed out drunk and woke up to the sound of an avalanche but they went into mass psychosis thinking it was the yeti and ran out. When they came to their senses, they were already too far from the camp and died of exposure. Now, it's true no one will ever know what happened but I personally think the mass psychosis theory is a lot more believable than the idea they were zapped by a spaceship.

It's pretty much accepted that it was a result of an avalanche, even though one or two unlikely events need to have occurred to explain it all. But 'creepy'? No, unless you're the kind of person who's always looking for a supernatural explanation.

Back then the joke in the UK was that we should come back and help out, show how it was done. Now we’re hiding behind France and Spain, saying “you touched it last"

To be fair to the Founders, they could not anticipate Florida. You can't even anticipate Florida in hindsight.

They tested several voting precincts in Palm Beach Florida from 2024. More people voted than were registered. And Republicans got a 5-6% boost in votes electronically that did not carry over to a hand count of ballots. The machines were lying or programmed to lie. Please do a Google search and read the articles. It's involved but it has been confirmed.
