One of the most horrific things I have ever experienced as a paramedic was the phenomenon of “CPR induced consciousness.” It’s where in some individuals who are in full cardiac arrest will regain consciousness during active CPR and beg you to stop due to the agonizing pain of the chest compressions in progress. The first time I ever had that happen to my patient it almost completely broke me. Unfortunately, they could not be resuscitated in the end despite us using every ACLS tool available. I’m considering a DNR for myself due to witnessing it.

Your immune system can just decide that the rest of your body is offensive and goes on the attack. I have this with psoriasis which started as flaky skin and now has become psoriatic arthritis where my fingers, hands and feet are unreliable because my body decided that my body is a foreign object.

Also, Guillain-Barre Syndrome or Parsonage-Turner Syndrome where your nerve sheathes are attacked. I lost use of a lung, much tactile feeling in my upper body, and much muscle usage. Most people it will return, some, like mine, is permanent. Just woke up one morning with my skin burning and difficulty breathing. Fun times, eh?

I just watched a SciShow about this; if you're of European, Middle Eastern or North African descent, you can blame the Black Death. Apparently, people with certain genes that code for a more aggressive immune response were something like 40% more likely to survive the Black Death, which is huge in a mass mortality event on that scale. However, those more aggressive genes are also more likely to overreact and give you an autoimmune disorder.
I’ve got psoriatic arthritis. Took ages to have it diagnosed. Finally it was after nearly two years. I still have trouble walking, my strength in my hands has pretty much gone, and my knees are, well pretty much fūcked to be honest. Luckily I have the psoriasis mostly under control, but if it breaks out, I look like I’ve been helping out Marie Curie. It’s c**p, but it’s my life now! Yay.
I have colitis ulcerosa - my immune system thinks there's something wrong and causes a constant inflammation of my intestines

I have psoriatic arthritis. The medications I take are damaging my liver. My arthritis is not stabilized, but we cannot increase the medication, otherwise my liver will lead to death. F**k psoriatic arthritis!
Psoriasis can run in families. My mum had it and my cousin had it so bad that she had to attend a special school for people with physical disabilities. My daughter and my grandson also have it, my daughter's is really bad when it flares up and she's been on the verge of 'unaliving' herself more than once.
Hashimotos is also an interesting one. It's where the autoimmune system attacks the thyroid and causes hypothyroidism among other issues.
I have this. My mom and sister got the opposite problem, Graves disease.

This is what all autoimmune diseases are-the immune system gets the wrong message and attacks parts of the body. The worst is systematic lupus because it randomly attacks EVERY part of the body. I have it and multiple sclerosis. MS is where the immune system attacks the myelin sheath of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It makes parts of the body controlled by those areas unable to work correctly and is unpredictable. I have a lemon of a body and I want a refund!
Systemic Lupus, affects conmective tissue, organs, joints, the whole system. Loads of fun not knowing what’s next really.

I had nephrotic syndrome as a toddler - no family history. Just random and sudden rejection of kidneys. After years of prednisone shots, I was suddenly fine at 5.
That's because as I understand it your immune system works by basically generating random attacks against infection which results in it attacking itself sometimes.
I have Sjogren's Syndrome. My immune system thinks my tear ducts, saliva glands and other fluid producing glands are the enemy. I use artificial tears, special toothpaste, the enamel on my teeth has etched and there are other problems I won't talk about here.

My cousin died of SJS, Stevens-Johson Syndrome, where your immune system suddenly becomes triggered and begins. Attacking essentially your entire body. It is often brought on by taking a relatively benign drug like ibuprofen. It mostly only affects people of Asian descent. For about 72 hours. You're in a great deal of pain and your skin is sloughing off. And then you're no longer with us. Immune system is one of the most poorly understood systems in the body. And while we don't understand how, we also know that it is greatly affected by psychological conditions as well.
Type one diabetic here......my immune system is an a*s hole and it seems like every year I get "blessed" with a new auto immune disorder. Once your body decides a natural bodily function is an invader then it becomes even easier for it to see something else as an invader.

When salmon begin their famous spawning run, they shut down unnecessary systems so they can channel all of their energy into swimming upstream to mate. Not only did it destroy his life (he was only 58) but it destroyed mine as well, as my mother decided selfishly to ignore my father’s well-known wishes not to be kept alive in a near-vegetative state. We took care of my dad at home. I loved him, but I lost my 20s and 30s to caring for him. I never moved out, never married, never got a normal job. He died in 2021. I held his hand as he died. Which means that one moment in time these folks were there, thinking, breathing, hearing the creaking, scared out of their minds. Then, they just weren't there at all. They didn't know that the sub had imploded because it took less time for the hull of the sub to reach their brains than the nerve impulses did.
