I think both don’t get the point: what kind of an environment creates circumstances under which a sow would crush her piglets when lying down? If you have ever seen free range pigs with babies, you'd understand that this is something extremely unlikely to happen if sows and piglets have enough space to navigate around each other. Only in the most restricted spaces something like this can happen so often that you need an expensive (and very cruel) appliance to prevent it. Also, I find it a rather unworthy argumentation strategy to discredit your opponent instead of finding sound arguments.

Not every farm that raises pigs has the land, money or capability to make all pigs free range. Also, just being free ranged does not mean it removes any chance of crushing and killing their own babies.

Just because he did not leave pigs for months doesn't mean all farmers are like him. C'mon people neglect even own children, of course there are cases and I bet numerous where farmers severly neglect animals. I know that because my uncle did that with his animals.

Both people are right, we had a family farm and we used those to keep the mothers from rolling over on the babies. But many factory farms keep them locked in pins too small to move in. Both things happen.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I don't have experience in the industry, but I know that even if THIS is innocuous, there's still a lot of cruelty in the still popular factory farms.

That doesn't make it okay. The pig is there against its will and will die unnaturally. No excuses for the treatment of livestock. Farmer should go live like that pig and then get back to us.

Clearly you've never raised pigs before, or probably any livestock for that matter. EVERY pig is kept against its will. You think they want to be raised and slaughtered by humans? No. That's how it is though. Never gonna change. And no, it will not die in there, it will be in there just long enough to nurse the piglets. When I raised pigs we just kept the sow in a small contained area with the piglets in a small pen next to her so they could nurse through the fence without having to worry about her smashing any of them (It DOES happen). And replacing what you think is cruelty to animals with cruelty to humans doesn't do your comment any justice, it makes you sound like an ignorant city slicker.

Admittedly, this practice is still questionable as it is needed in factory farming environments. You will most likely not see this on farms following organic standards.

Much embarassing stuff here, but also much strange stuff. People asking for sources are just right. If you make claims, state the sources, as easy as it is...also big names make mistakes. In science, you can have a track record to the Mars, if the next article your write lacks essential references, it will be rejected, at least if submitted to serious outlets.

Agreed. There’s as much arrogance on the one side as there’s ignorance on the other. You’d think the scholars at least would understand the fallacy of argument from authority. But I guess that only applies to other people.

don't see what's embarassing about 21. if you're not interested in sport, why would you recognise the person. they wanted a picture of the two of them, and asked a passer by. nothing wrong or embarassing about that. in the unlikely event I recognised a sports person, I'd have no reason to want a picture with them, but I might want a picture of me and a friend having a nice day out.

I have a PhD in environmental science. I constantly get mansplained (yes, it's always guys) that I don't understand the science and that I don't understand that I've been hoodwinked about climate change. When I ask them to produce their sources they never can, but any legitimate scientific paper I refer them to is "fake".....

I'm not entirely sure why we're supposed to know or look up every person we come across online, or we're idiots? I admit, I'm not big on arguing about things I know nothing about with complete strangers, but there are plenty who do.. The person who just expects you to know they're an expert in whatever the topic is, is just as big an a*****e as the guy who thinks he's an expert and isn't. What happened to expecting sources, credentials, and proof? Or at least verifying your own damn credentials! I don't have the time or the inclination to look up every rando who comments on an article or tweet. Everyone needs to get over themselves, being "internet famous" on various sites, or in another obscure form, doesn't automatically make you well known.

I somewhat agree but not all of these examples are a case of obscurity and arrogance. They're more often cases of amusing irony. This article unnecessarily frames the whole set as "people making a fool of themselves".

#12 isn't embarrassing. Trusting coaches, players, family, and friends for information about things like injuries it ridiculous. They have no incentive to tell the truth, and can only benefit from keeping bad news from leaking. The rest are pretty funny.
