Much embarassing stuff here, but also much strange stuff. People asking for sources are just right. If you make claims, state the sources, as easy as it is...also big names make mistakes. In science, you can have a track record to the Mars, if the next article your write lacks essential references, it will be rejected, at least if submitted to serious outlets.
Agreed. There’s as much arrogance on the one side as there’s ignorance on the other. You’d think the scholars at least would understand the fallacy of argument from authority. But I guess that only applies to other people.
It's not the argument from authority fallacy if they are an authority on the subject though. The argument from authority fallacy is using being an authority on one subject to justify a claim about an unrelated subject.

one could avoid much embarrassment if they did some research on their own before arguing with a confirmed source. They can also ask respectfully. Someone wrote a book, and you want more background/sources from them? Try: I understand you're an expert in the field--are there additional resources you can supply so I can see them for myself? And ffs, don't tell the author of an article to 'read the full story'. and if you're commenting to someone with a 'verified' mark, LOOK WHO THEY ARE before challenging them.
Hans, exactly. It's called appeal to authority. Just because someone is an expert in a field, doesn't mean they can't be wrong.
And, so many of the snarky replies resort to arguments from authority. Oh, I'm an astrophysicist, that obviously makes my opinion on meteorology correct. Or, I'm a biochemist so I can be disrespectful and immature online because I'm better than everyone else...

don't see what's embarassing about 21. if you're not interested in sport, why would you recognise the person. they wanted a picture of the two of them, and asked a passer by. nothing wrong or embarassing about that. in the unlikely event I recognised a sports person, I'd have no reason to want a picture with them, but I might want a picture of me and a friend having a nice day out.
Yeah I didn't understand that one at all. Maybe she felt unrecognized, but I have no idea who she is. I've no interest in sports. Should I want her to get my autograph if she's never seen what I'm famous for? Oh wait, I'm not famous. Ha ha
