I don’t like this trope of the dad with a gun either, but I’d never even thought of it from the perspective of the male date’s parents.

Granted, there’s the old joke about the girl’s father polishing his shotgun while the boy who’s picking her up for their date is waiting for her downstairs, as a way of warning him that he’d better be a gentleman and get his daughter home on time, instead of thinking he can do what he wants with her.
