That''s the problem with trickle down economics, If you give money to the poor they will spend it on things they are needing but were doing without. You give money to the middle class they will spend it on stuff they could really use but were doing without. You give money to the rich they will hoard it and make money off being rich.

Giving it to the homeless is better for the economy. It will go right back into the local economy instead of overseas banks. That's why it was stupid to give tax breaks to rich people & claim it was "for the economy." The economy of Congress-creeps possibly.

Nope, they do not put it into savings. They take it out of the economy altogether and sequester it overseas where it can no longer serve the economy that earned it.

“My Jaw Has Never Hit The Ground Faster:” 50 Times Out-Of-Touch People Got Shamed Online I live in Australia and in primary school there is a subject called religious education. My parents are atheists but have always said we are free to choose religion if we wish. So my best friend and I were in the same class in grade 2. We had the religion teacher come in at the end of the day to teach us. I don’t remember how it came up but the teacher tells us that if you have a miscarriage you’re going to hell. School finished and we leave the class to find our parents who usually waited together and my best friend just broke down into tears. Our mums looked at me for answers and I was confused as well. My best friend goes “is my sister going to hell?” While still crying. So I go “oh! The teachers told us that anyone whose has a miscarriage is going to hell.” And that’s how I found out her sister has had 7 miscarriages and that my mum had had 2. Needless to say neither of us participated in religious education again and our mums got the teacher fired.

There's a saying that 'the devil can quote Scripture to suit his purposes', and (from a religious standpoint) that's what's happening here. Christianity has at its core one simple rule; love one another. Anyone that cannot or will not do that is doing the work of evil.

Money didn't stop the isolation and depression from COVID, but knowing you or your family won't starve because you can't go to work should at least be a good reason to stop complaining. Do you feel "depressed"? Tough luck. I volunteered with the Red Cross during the lockdown, taking food from the Food Bank to people who needed it. You don't know how many people started to cry when they saw us, because they had nothing to eat and no money to buy even the basics for the kids. In my country, thousands of elderly people were locked inside their rooms in their nursing homes and left to agonise and díe alone instead of being taken to hospitals. Those rich imbeciles were "depressed" and "isolated" because they couldn't go shopping or partying? Ohhhh!!! I'm so not sorry! They can go and jump from the top of the nearest skyscraper for all I care.

I think it hit hard if: 1) You were not financially comfortable 2) You lost your job 3) You had minor children 4) You had loved ones actually get sick from COVID. And the like. I think it's actually kind of silly to call out the millionaires for this, because objectively, for a lot of people who WEREN'T millionaires, it flew by far more easily than for many others.

Homeless tents lined up on a city sidewalk with a mural in the background illustrating social out-of-touch issues. Driving past a large group of tents belonging to homeless people… “I just don’t understand why they would want to sleep outside when it’s so cold out.” Ummmmm they don’t.

I went to break with some coworkers, and when coming back found another group that were smoking at the door. As I had time left, I stayed chitchatting for a bit. A homeless man passed by and asked for a cigarette and/or spare change. We gave him some and he went on his way. Among these people, we had the son of the owner doing some kind of 4-weeks internship during summer (basically, "this is going to pass to you at some point, get some idea of what we do here) and he bursts out "I don't understand how can you reach this point, you always have some money left so you can rent something". Ours jaws dropped! We were paid just above minimum salary, barely surviving, while he was going on vacation at least 4 times a year. It stills makes my blood boil

I have done some outreach work with a group that assists the homeless. What is sad to me is that many of the homeless we try to help would rather sleep outside in the cold than follow the simple rules to get into housing, even if it is free. Most have mental issues and the easiest way for them to deal with that is d***s. Rule #1 to get into housing is no d***s. The biggest problem is that governments, small and large, will spend millions on housing and d**g treatment but will not pay for mental health assistance. It's a vicious cycle with no real end in sight.

The other comment is "they will not go to the shelters." That's right, the homeless sometimes don't go to shelters because they are dehumanizing; there is no privacy; there is a huge amount of sexual a*****t in shelters; they have to leave each morning so while they gone at night, your stuff is stolen. There has to be a better way; if only we were a wealthy country and wanted to redistribute our funds .....

Some people choose this lifestyle . They want to live their life off the grid. and don't want to be bothered. We had a homeless guy that set up right across from where I work. He never bothered any one . Several employees offered to help him he said he was fine. so we bought him a tent a sleeping bag we would take turns door dashing food . We would let him sit in our lobby and have some coffee. He never bothered any one. Unfortunatley he passed of hypothermia we were all kind of sad about it.

“My Jaw Has Never Hit The Ground Faster:” 50 Times Out-Of-Touch People Got Shamed Online Picture this: I am in high school. My mother and I are told that I have a terminal heart condition, and she takes her own life, I found her body, and my father was away on a business trip for days, and nobody knows where, until they find someone at his office that knows. So I, alone as a teen, have to handle the police, and all that. My dad comes home, decides this is a perfect time to restart his own life, and evicts me. I graduated high school homeless crashing in people's guest rooms and basements. College dreams dashed. My best friend, my only lifeline, says this:

"Will you stop pining about your mother? That was like, 6 months ago. Get over it. I lost my bomber jacket at Clyde's and you don't see me still going on and on about. For chrissake, that was back in high school."

Now in their defense, they were 17 years old, and teens say some pretty dumb things (myself included). But that was the hardest verbal slap in the face I ever got, and was the beginning of the end of our friendship.

Oh, and yeah, the "terminal" heart condition was not terminal, since this was nearly 40 years ago.

I hope this is fake. I mean no second medical opinions. The father completey unfazed by both his wife committing s*****e, and his daughter being "terminal". Then somehow evicts them, while still in HS, which would be super illegal to do. And yes teens are dumb, but I can't see anyone comparing a lost jacket to a dead family member. While technically not impossible, there is too many red flags. Which would be good, because I'd hope this would never actually happen.

While attempting to relate on the cost of living, she said, "I personally, as a mother and wife, look carefully at my credit card bill once a month, and last Sunday I said to the kids, 'You're older now. You don't watch Disney anymore. Let's cut that Disney+ subscription."' Needless to say, in a time when people are struggling to afford housing, food and other basic necessities, that did not go over well.

My sister is constantly on my heiny to "get a job" and telling me that there are "jobs everywhere" and I can work in fast food or retail as they're always hiring. (I'm 43.) I worked retail for two and a half years and it was an absolute nightmare and incredibly stressful, not to mention that managers can cut your hours if they feel like it, or force you to cover someone else's shift, etc. I told her that working retail the last time really eroded my mental health. My sister was like "I totally get it. But do it anyway." ...my sister has worked for our family's small business her entire life and has literally NEVER had any other job. She has NO idea what it's like to work retail, fast food, etc. She's always been able to go on vacation for weeks at a time, anytime she wants to, and these days she plays pickleball every weekday morning from 8am to noon. She doesn't have to find anyone to "cover her shift" or "request time off" - she just goes on cruises or flies to Miami for a month.

I already knew that my parents are the reason why I can't lose weight, but recently I noticed that they are also the reason why I had a eating disorder when I was younger (that I never got a full recoverer). I'm trying to take control of my own life, I'm already 22, but for my parents "while you live under my roof you do exactly what I say"

This is why rich people have problems with the 'equity' portion of DEI. They don't like diversity, because they only like people like themselves. They don't like equity, because that would mean playing fair (and you don't get rich by being honest, ever). And they don't like inclusion because excluding people makes them feel powerful.

So...this needs context. You don't know why this womans child went no contact. Maybe they're an a****t, maybe they are suffering from severe mental illness. Stuff like that falls under the category of ambiguous loss. Dealing with the loss of a person who is emotionally present in our lives but physically absent for whatever reason, can be an immensly complex grief process. Both cases of "losing a child" are absolutely tragic. I would say, it's different degrees of tragic.

“My Jaw Has Never Hit The Ground Faster:” 50 Times Out-Of-Touch People Got Shamed Online I worked for a major insurer during the recession. We had two people running our local office- they were husband and wife and made millions. During the annual All Associate Meeting, the Mrs was trying to warm up the crowd by telling "relatable" stories about her personal life.

The first story was that she was taking motorcycle lessons, because she just bought a brand new, completely decked out Harley. She made sure to describe all the bells and whistles, as well as her new leather jacket and motorcycle wardrobe.

The second story was her mocking one of her executives because when she was telling him about her brand name purses, he didn't know Coach, and Prada were purse brands. She laughed hysterically as the crowd (which had been informed the week prior via email that we were not getting raises) sat stone-faced.

At the end during the Q&A, she had the balls to tell us we just didn't have the budget for cost of living raises. People actually booed. B***h, you just spent THIRTY MINUTES flaunting your lifestyle. I'm wearing second-hand clothes because it's what I can afford, and you're telling us about your new Vuitton wallet and matching bag. I hope your drive your f*****g new motorcycle off a cliff, Sandy.

We didn't have any more in-person All Associate Meetings after that.

When I was 14 me and my brothers got a pair of socks for Christmas. One pair each. Our sisters got a 4 pack of underwear each. My mother borrowed $20 from our father to buy the gifts and expected her to pay him back. My father gave each of us a $20 bill for Christmas. I gave my bill to our father because he was telling us that our mother owed him $20 and he probably wouldn't get it back. He gladly stuffed it in his pocket. This was despite the fact that he was months behind on his child support and had no plans of ever paying it.

Well, the SOB certainly did admit he believes in prejudice, didn't he? It is obvious that there are differences as to how much opportunity minorities have in the great land of "equality", but some don't recognize that. Then, again, maybe he meant that because you are a minority, your genes aren't up to the "white standard". Either way, it is ignorant and racist to say that! I was leaving a job site (residential renovation) one day, loading up my tools into my big military style backpack because I was riding my 2007 CBR600RR, when this slick black BMW rolled up the driveway.

The mom was driving and her son was in the passenger seat but I had heard from my boss that the BMW belonged to the kid, he just couldn’t drive yet.

Anyways they parked and he came running up to me, gushing about my bike, then he says “Man, that is SICK, how did you get your parents to buy you one?? They’d never get me one!”

I told him I worked my a*s off and bought it all on my own. I’ll never forget how he looked me dead in the eyes and said “oh man that really sucks, I hope I never have to do that”

Really made me realize that some people are playing a completely different game than the rest of us.

I took out loans and worked while I went to school. I only took 4 classes a semester instead of 5 because of work, so it took me 5 instead of 4 years, but spread out the cost. Paying back those loans and living in poverty was hard but I like my job so I'm glad I did it.

My wife and I had a stillbirth.

A friend of Mine's baby was a little irritable and so my friend turned to us and said 'are you sure you want kids?'

Also got a comment from a work colleague; 'It's all for the best'.

I have miscarried a couple times, and finally got too old to have kids, but that’s so so different than a stillbirth. My pregnancies ended early, before the 12th week (one was four days away from 12 weeks). I never actually gave birth to my babies, knowing they weren’t alive. That’s incredibly devastating.

Pain and grief go hand in hand. With both my children I loved them from the moment I found out I was pregnant. Just because you didn't give birth doesn't mean the grief was any different or less. I'm so sorry this happened to you.

My mother had a stillbirth ( her first Boy) in the last 50s'. She never recovered emotionally, women were treated horribly after still birth in those days. Never even got to hold the baby. She went on to have 5 more kids, but it haunted her to the end.

Yeah, not even close. I will say, addicts/homeless people understand discrimination, not racial discrimination obviously (unless non-white), but somewhat similar. Hassled relentlessly by cops, followed around in stores, looked down upon, stuff like that. Hence why black/brown people who are also homeless and/or addicts have an especially hard time in society.

I had one for way less than that. We were married at the courthouse, our friends who were also our witnesses took us to a wedding dinner afterward, and one of them handed us the keys to her beach house for our honeymoon as a wedding gift. Perfect wedding and honeymoon, as far as I’m concerned. BTW, that was 24 years ago and we’re still happy together. Most of the people I knew who had the big expensive weddings and honeymoons have been divorced long ago. Some of them twice by now.

We had the courthouse wedding too, I don't think the license cost very much. Then we went out to dinner after, but not at a fancy place. Saved a lot of money. I don't regret not doing the white dress and trimmings, I'm an introvert and hate being the center of attention.

I actually made a profit on my wedding. I made my dress and the cake. Church we attended was free for event and reception. Relatives from far away sent money instead of coming. Friends and local family sang, played music, held a potluck, and we just had a nice celebration with people we liked instead of a public spectacle.

So not courthouse, but Frugal. We got married on flagstaff mountain at the amphitheater in Boulder Co. Maybe $50 bucks to rent the place for a few hours. Had the reception at a state owned historical house in a state park(think old victorian) prob $100 for the day. Had about 100 people from all over the country, Buffett and open bar. Entire thing was probably 5-8G. DJ was my buddy with my component stereo and and a rented karaoke machine. My wife mixed a bunch of cd's for the reception. I sold a car. Parents chipped in a bit. People still talk about it. 30 years and going strong...

Close-up of a person wearing a watch and a black leather jacket, illustrating people recalling out-of-touch statements. I was in a restroom once and overheard a group of girls at the sinks. One girl says she wanted to buy a leather jacket but was going to wait because it's a big purchase. This other girl responds immediately with "You should just go to Turkey to get a leather jacket!". There's a pause, and then the first girl says "Are...are leather jackets less expensive there?" The 2nd girl takes a second to consider what was just asked...then dismisses it with "You should just go to Turkey for the vibes and then pick up a jacket while you're there!"

Every time she wrecks a car, she demands their parents buy her a new car. The last time, just 6-7 months ago, my ex tried to convince her (and their parents) to procure her a used car this time. NOPE, UNACCEPTABLE. She demanded a new car. She finally agreed to a "used" car but demanded that it couldn't be older than a 2024... which still cost their parents $25,000.

To be honest, there are some people whose priorities are a little... warped. A woman I worked with would go around the office daily to collect empty aluminum cans so she could "buy milk for her baby", but go across the street twice a day for a tall Starbucks. That's probably 2 gallons of milk worth of coffee.

'avocado toast' is simply a representation of the type of choices people make. You could buy a big bag of porridge oats and throw the cheapest fruit it in for breakfast. You could share a house to save money and you could get a book from the library instead of paying for TV, you could choose not to have children, but people don't want to do it. They want a certain quality of life, whether it's luxurious or not and the standard of living they choose is almost certainly higher than the ones our parents or grandparents had.

If they spent less on looking hip and rich, they would have had enough money to buy a decent, average terraced house. Sometimes it is choices Sometimes not.

That's one way to tell you don't live around here. My daughter and son-in-law were lucky to find a nice apartment in a good area for "only" $2,850/month. For a one bedroom apartment. Many others pay more.

« Why don’t you ask your father to pay for it? »
I was working in a French private school with out of touch teenagers from wealthy families.
EACH year, they’d do a school trip either to Asia or North America.
One of my student just couldn’t afford it, the trip was so expensive. And the others couldn’t understand WHY. Like… can’t the parents pay for it, as theirs do ? They were nice kids, but sincerely could not understand that not everyone was as privileged as them.

Em... I can imagine a situation where you already spent time next to some woman (e.g. if the car is full), and tell her "I love your perfume", when you are climbing out. This would be complimenting smell and her choices, and not a compliment to her (as it could be body smell). Also, if you climb out after that, she is not forced to think what you had in mind saying it and what she should answer; also - if you climb first, it pretty much allows her to feel more relaxed, as you are not waiting to see where her stop is, or even worse - getting out in the same stop. So, theoretically it is possible, but depends on situation and behavior.

Her dad said something like "I don't understand why people don't just fill up the tank. It's so much more effort to come back later!"

I believe you, that you don't understand. You own a commercial real estate business that owns over $100,000,000 of property. You retired at 52. Your parents are old money and were social elite at Stanford. It makes total sense that you have never had to choose between eating for a week and putting 10 gallons of fuel in your tank.

$50k is €45k. So to an US citizen this is on the brink of "poor"? In the Netherlands and Germany this is a pretty nice salary, we also pay taxes from that and fees for mandatory social care, health care and much more - which fund our affordable health care, mostly free schools and universities, you name it. If the wages in the US are so much higher, why is your health care so expensive, when our group effort with less money make it free?

I can't imagine not knowing how to cook at college age. I started cooking at seven, just basic stuff, but real food/real cooking. My older brother and I were latchkey kids before that phrase was invented, and if we didn't cook, we didn't eat. My mom was a bartender and was never home in the evenings, she usually got home about 2:30 am. She absolutely could NOT afford a babysitter, so we stayed home alone. People in the late 60s to early 70s had a tendency to NOT 'think of the children' like, at all!

In high school my rich friend got a brand new Ford truck after her first car which was a Jeep. They had to get rid of the Jeep because it didn’t have side-impact airbags and she needed a car with side-impact airbags. When she was telling us all this, I said “my car doesn’t have side-impact airbags… it’s a 10 year old piece of s**t… my mom got it for me for cheap…” so my rich friend said “I guess your mom doesn’t really love you then.”

6mo old puppy lost to a vehicle accident.

I texted extended family the news just so everyone knew to avoid future awkward conversation.

3 days later was a planned babyshower for a sibling. I didn't want to go because of grief, but I dragged myself out. The first thing my mom (who received the prior text) says:

    "You look depressed!"

    me: "My dog just died."

I gave my sister a bulk bag of dog treats (she had 4 dogs) so they could be of use and left shortly after.

Some people, having never established a true connection with an animal or pet, simply don't grasp the level of love that pet parents feel for their "children". Thus, when an animal death occurs, they don't comprehend the level of grief that follows. I've always said that a pet parent will grieve the loss to the same degree that they valued the love for the animal. And all agree that they wouldn't trade the love for less grief.

A few years ago I was going through a particularly difficult time in my life. Nothing was going right, every time i thought things couldn't possibly get any worse they did. I had financial difficulties, I was looking after my mum who was having treatment for cancer, my house was falling apart around me because I couldn't afford to do anything about it, my peg dog was poorly and needed round the clock care and my brother in law got killed in a freak accident. Just two days after that I was made redundant. That was the final straw that broke the camel's back for me. I mentioned to one of my managers (who was fully aware of my situation) that I couldn't take any more and I felt depressed. He replied, "I really don't understand what you've got to be depressed about."

I got the whole "it's God's plan" BS from my religious aunt after my dad's accident. And she also would tell me "God only gives us burdens that we can carry." I was 18 years old when my dad's accident happened and I was his caregiver for the next 21 years. So apparently my father's catastrophic brain damage and the subsequent f**k!ng-over of my entire young adulthood was "God's plan" and was a burden that I was TOTALLY able to carry. (I loved my father and don't regret helping to care for him, but it did destroy my young adulthood. I never moved out, never finished college, never had a real job/career, never had the choice to get married/have a family, etc.)

Did these people ask if you were a skiier after telling them that you had moved from Louisiana? If not, I'm thinking that they asked if you skiied, because you now live in Colorado, a state with plenty of mountains/snow.

During the 2008 recession, Boomer Brother bought a condo that had gone into foreclosure. Spent the next decade lecturing everyone that they need to buy a foreclosed condo. Not everyone has the down payment just laying around and a lot of those condos were shoddy builds which is why people were walking away from them.

This is true. When my stepdad retired, he bought himself a used bass boat that he had been wanting for years. He is not rich he just loves to fish and he was smart about purchasing.

If you own a boat - or fancy car, etc. - all it means is that at one time you (thought you) could afford it.

Reminds me of when my mom told me to euthanize my dog Stilgar when he was sick as a puppy because "You can just get a new one." He survived and is a happy, wonderful doggo. My mother is still a sh!tbag - she says she "can't stand to look at him" because it "makes her feel bad/sad" to see how disabled he is. (He has myoclonus - constant, uncontrollable full-body muscle twitching - and a few mobility and balance issues. He's also a bit crooked. He has NO idea he's disabled and can run and jump and play like a healthy dog!) stilly_at_...45c450.jpg stilly_at_the_beach-68262a445c450.jpg

I thought something similar the last time I went camping & slept in a tent - especially around 6am when I was woken by a strong wind blowing the centre pole over onto my head. This was in 1969 & I have never forgotten it nor have I ever been camping again. Edited to say that RVs weren't thing then where I was living, I was thinking of a comfortable bed in a motel room

One of the C-suite guys likes to talk to me at work as we both get in super early.

One day he was all anxious because his vacation home was in the path of a hurricane and he didn’t know what he was going to do if it got damaged. Mostly because he was going to host Thanksgiving and it’s just not as nice at his regular house.

Meanwhile, I’m trying to figure out if my roommates and I are going to lose our apartment when they raise the rent another 100$ a month.

Fullyrawkristina on YouTube is one of my favorite examples of an out-of-touch person. She is the kind of person who, if she became famous during the TikTok era, she would have been ripped apart *bad* by Gen Z.

She pushes this ridiculous, very expensive raw food diet. So to prove once and for all that her diet is affordable, she filmed herself shopping at Whole Foods, to prove she could make 3 meals with “just” $20.

The best line was something like “if I can buy three meals from Whole Foods for $20, then *you* can buy three meals from Whole Foods for $20.”.

When I got a little bit choked up while talking about being assaulted - My dad told me that I was weak and couldn't handle life. I got angry and told him that he had been telling me my whole life that I'm not allowed to cry or have feelings and that he could f*©k off with that nonsense. He got real quiet then said "please don't hang up on me." 😂 Ever since then every time we talk on the phone, he's so much kinder and actually listens to me.
