Enjoying your meal is about more than just taste, which, after all, comes after the initial sensation of actually seeing it.

A popular saying claims that we eat with our eyes too, so Bored Panda decided to test the validity of this phrase and put together a collection of oddly satisfying food pictures.

From a pristine McDonald's hamburger bun to a symmetrical striped cake, continue scrolling to participate in our "study" and see if the images are enough to make your stomach growl. Bon appétit.

If the photos, for some reason, aren't enough and you still need more proof that the way a chef plates and presents their food has a big impact on the guest's experience, consider this experiment from Oxford psychologist, Professor Charles Spence.

Inspired by Wassily Kandinsky's 'Painting Number 201', the Franco-Columbian chef and fellow co-author of the study Charles Michel designed a salad resembling the abstract artwork.

"A number of chefs now are realising that they are being judged by how their foods photograph – be it in the fancy cookbooks [or], more often than not, when diners Instagram their friends," Professor Spence explained.

Thirty men and thirty women were each presented with one of three salads containing identical ingredients, arranged either to resemble the Kandinsky painting, a regular tossed salad, or a "neat" formation where each component was spaced away from the others.

I try not to immediately label something as "pretentious" because I am a chef and do appreciate food as art but that's right on the line of unnecessary and over the top. Cool thing to execute, but I'd never want to work somewhere where I had to do that.

Before the participants of the study sampled their plateful, the Kandinsky-inspired dish was rated higher for complexity, artistic presentation and general liking. Participants were prepared to pay twice as much for the meal as for either the regular or "neat arrangements."

After finishing off their portion, participants also rated the Kandinsky-esque salad higher for "tastiness," despite it receiving similar ratings to the other salads for the four basic components of taste: salty, bitter, sweet, and sour.

Donkeywheel is sort of correct actually. Sushi is a rice dish, the word sushi describes the vinegar and sugar seasoned rice that's used. It's a common misconception sushi means raw fish, that'd be sashimi. I say sort of correct however, because outside tradition, I don't think there are strict definitions of what counts as sushi. In the west, people usually mean a cold nigirizushi or nori makizushi kind of food. But it's also good to know there is a tradition behind sushi that's based on the seasoning of the rice.

for the crĆŖpes : mix together 250g of flour T45 (in France. I do not know if this purity classification for flour exists in other countries), 3 eggs, half a liter of semi-skimmed milk, 2 packets of vanilla sugar (about 20g), 100g of butter and a pinch of salt. let it rest 1 hour. make your crĆŖpes, let cool, then put a crĆŖpe, spread a spoon of jam or fruit mousse of your choice, a crĆŖpe, a spoon of whipped cream, a crĆŖpe, etc :) abd use a veeeeery sharp knife if you don't wanna crush everything :D

Of course, teasing apart exactly which aspect of the salads' presentation affected how much participants were willing to pay for a dish, and their perception of its "tastiness," is a tricky endeavor.

But the authors of the study suggest that the perceived effort involved in preparing the plate and its aesthetic appeal could be among the factors influencing participants.

WOW, these are going to be confusing! The eyes look at them, and signal the tongue and stomach to prepare for 'I Can Has Cheezburger'-like taste sensations. The nose tries to interrupt, "Wait a minute, let's not get hasty, something isn't right here..." But by then, the teeth have taken a huge bite, and the tongue goes "WHAT ON EARTH? This isn't right - but it's GOOD!!!"

Tweezers are your friend in this instance. And a toothpick to adjust position. ~~~ I can absolutely see this as 'oh, I'm gonna arrange the sprinkles on my toast while I'm eating my eggs' or summat & 3 hours later... the entire jar of sprinkles dumped onto a pan to sort out the broken ones, trip to the craft cabinet for tweezers, 15m spent contemplating the perfect plate to put it on, 5 harrowing minutes transferring the bread to said plate hoping you won't disturb the pattern, & 2 housemates coming by & saying 'What the hell are you doing? Ooookaaay...' while the 3rd housemate sits down & sorts out the sprinkles by length & roundness for you. ~~~ Edit: I was curious, it's a cookie that's an art piece. The same artist did a bowl of rice where all the grains are lined up & it looks very weird. Made my brain uncomfortable, while this makes my brain happy.

Maybe it's steamed cheesecake? Or white chocolate icing (not sure if iicing is the right word, but I hope you know what I mean :))

Failing to see what's "flawless" about it. Most onions grow fairly consistent in shape. I could go in my walk in tomorrow and find many onions that look just like the one in the picture.

You can decorate Tiramisu so beautifully and it's pretty easy. Just use a cut out stencil? Pattern? I don't know the right word in English. Put it on the surface, sieve the coca powder on it, remove and you have the most beautiful patterns. This one is something that's beautiful and for everyone.

OP is allowed to brag about making a pretty dish but I call a little BS on the "hand cut" claim. I'm not saying there aren't cooks/chefs with pristine knife skills but there's no way they didn't use a mandolin to get those slices.

I'd let them claim using a mandolin as "hand cut", as long as they didn't use a hobart slicer

I used to make a caramelized apple cheesecake every thanksgiving. One time I burned the apples a little, and one of my friends LOVED it. From then on I had to make him a separate serving of burned apples.

A+ for effort and style points but there are definitely some burned apples in the mix and they do not taste good when that happens.

Please tell me it’s not actual wagyu, please. Hopefully it’s fake us or australian « wagyuĀ Ā» that has nothing to do with the real product that is never cooked that way.

American wagyu, so one of the four kairyo wagyu cattle breeds raised on an American farm. It can't be called wagyu if it is not from a wagyu cow. That doesn't make it "fake", it's the same cattle breed, and people can cook their moo in whatever way they so want.

With a sticker... The black text blocks light which inhibits the red pigments from being formed.

No please no. They do a lot of things right, but even more horribly wrong. They're not the society I'd wish to live in. Every country has strengths and weaknesses. None has so far gotten it right. The dutch are pretty close but also still not there.
