No matter how much we plan for tomorrow, some things are just out of our control. The universe always retains a certain level of uncertainty, and every once in a while, it unfolds in the most unexpected ways.

The Instagram account 'Oddly Horrifying' captures those moments, and scrolling through them feels like entering a forbidden corridor of the internet, where reality starts glitching, and you no longer know what's real and what isn't.

It’s a reminder that beneath the surface of the ordinary, there’s (a little) chaos waiting to burst out.

when I was 10, the neighbors gas grill exploded and a became a huge fireball burning like an oil well fire 20 feet high ... ice cream truck pulls up, ice cream dude jumps out with arms full of ice and dry ice, runs straight up to the burning sun of a grill and puts it out.... we bought a lot of icream that summer.

Native Americans owned the goods, the "storekeeper" was responsible for distributing it to them. He let them starve instead. Native were forced to give up their land in exchange for regular shipments of food. They were not allowed to hunt or farm on their old land.

This is exactly right. They weren't starving because they had nothing, they were starving because he (and others in power) refused to give them what was theirs. THEN he told them to just eat grass if they were hungry.

When scrolling through such posts, we need to keep ourselves in check. On one hand, engaging with frightening media and the emotions it creates in a safe setting can help people alleviate anxiety and build psychological resilience.

On the other hand, research by Dr. Coltan Scrivner and Dr. Joe Stubbersfield shows that a heightened interest in learning about threats can also lead people to become more interested in less constructive types of stories, such as conspiracy theories.

The quote that often resurfaces in discussions about the Sandy Hook shooting and its aftermath is attributed to British journalist Dan Hodges. It states: "In retrospect Sandy Hook marked the end of the U.S. gun control debate. Once America decided killing children was bearable, it was over."

Sandy Hook was what did America for me. I've seen lots of school shootings out of the USA in my life, but when nothing was changed after Sandy Hook, and you even had fkn c u n t s claiming some of the hysterical parents were ''paid crisis actors'', that did me. I just could not (and still cannot) believe that the US's stranglehold on guns and ''the right to bear arms'' is more important than lives. Same as the shooting in Uvalde.

That was Biden's order, actually. He was in office at the time and gave the order to completely pull the U.S. military out of Afghanistan and ended up stranding allies there, letting women and girls become basically enslaved, and leaving behind a ton of military equipment. Politicians just suck. I'm sure I'll be downvoted into oblivion, but whatever. This isn't a defense of Trump, just giving credit where credit's due.

Condones a Dr with an active Measles infection that is checking children while he is in the highly contagious stage still and is putting all these children that their dumb a*s antivax parents who depend on Tik Tok and the idiots online that say vaccines are dangerous and cause Autism. This idiot man and the even worse Antivax parents are the ones killing their children and if their children die of a disease that vaccines would have prevented they should be sentenced to jail in Venezuela with all the poor men were kidnapped and taken to. Are all of them good men no but they are entitled to due process. To investigate this link, Scrivner and Stubbersfield ran three studies. Each one had different groups of participants, with a close to 50/50 split in genders.

The first study was designed to find out if morbid curiosity is linked with higher belief in conspiracy theories.

"Using the morbid curiosity scale and the generic conspiracist beliefs scale, we found that the more morbidly curious people were, the higher their general belief in conspiracy theories," the researchers said.

Every time US healthcare is the topic, everybody is upset. The healthcare system in Europe did not come falling out of the sky. It took effort of a lot of people over quite some time to get it working and its finances are since then a community effort, where everybody chips in and does not expect to get more bucks out of it than put in. The gain is an overall healthy population, with solid access to cures and treatment, which is seen as a general win. Are there "freeloaders"? Yes, but way less than the US thinks. By definition, every foreigner, including tourists, seeking medical help is a freeloader. But they will get treated, without having to pay horrendous sums of money. Is it it "socialist"? Well, most of us are living in social democracys, where the individual is seen as valuable person and not just a commercial asset, and a solid social care system, financed by taxes, is normal.

i lived in the area that this happened and i was also a teen who hitchhiked. this story stopped all that activity. the guy thought chopping off her arms would make her bleed to death. while packing the mud helped the real reason she didn't bleed out was the guy used a small dull hatchet. it basically crushed and sealed the major veins and the mud assisted with that. love the pic showing her running with her dogs and sporting a huge smile.

It amazes me how many of the young kids I teach watch horror movies and other stuff their parents probably don't even know about. In this case though, sometimes horror movies are better than thinking about the true horror of cancer, so I'm not as judgemental about it.

I wish ya'll wouldn't say "sweet" or "cute" about this picture. The child had cancer and died from it. He got a visit from a character he was familiar with. Cancer in that time was treated with chemotherapy and radiation. They make you sick, nauseous, and I don't know what else. If watching horror movies got his mind off his situation, I'd say go for it. A physician at St. Jude said they throw everything, every treatment available, at these kids trying to find a therapy that will work for them.

For the second study, Scrivner and Stubbersfield tested whether the link between morbid curiosity and interest in conspiracy theories was driven by people's perception of threats.

"We had people rate how threatening they felt several explanations of events were. The events included both mainstream and conspiratorial explanations of the same thing, such as whether aeroplane contrails are water vapour or harmful 'chemtrails.' We found that the higher people's morbid curiosity, the higher they perceived the threat in conspiratorial explanations," they said.

Found this: While many were quick to call the photo fake, it’s since been confirmed to be real and shows a giant golden-crowned flying fox (Acerodon jubatus). Also known as a golden-capped fruit bat, this endangered species is one of the largest bats in the world and is endemic to the Philippines. Classified as a megabat, these flying foxes can weigh up to three pounds with a wingspan of up to five and a half feet.

For the final study, the researchers investigated whether morbid curiosity makes people more likely to seek out conspiracy theories as explanations for events. To do that, they asked the participants to pick between a series of paired descriptions, choosing which of the pair they would like to learn more about.

Some were morbid and non-morbid pairs, such as seeing either a photo of a man who ate his girlfriend, or a photo of a man who saved his friend from drowning. Others were conspiratorial and mainstream explanations of the same event, such as the Titanic sinking – because it struck an iceberg vs. being deliberately sunk in an insurance scam.

"We found that the more morbidly curious people were in their choices (such as choosing to view the photo of the man who k****d his girlfriend), the more likely they were to be interested in conspiratorial explanations," the researchers highlighted.

Scoliosis is nothing to be laughed at. I have a fairly mild case, but my spine is s-shaped, twisted and consequently one leg is shorter than the other. I've had physiotherapy for as long as I can remember, but to no avail. I overcompensate, so no one could ever tell unless I show them my back. The daily backpain, however, is excruciating.

Same. One of the most frustrating things about it, is not being believed. Hasn't happened to me in a long time. But I was fired from a job once, because I pulled something in my back (which, as you well know, we're very prone to), and could no longer lift 30-80lb packages. They accused me of lying about being hurt, because I could still walk, sit, and stand. When in reality, if they had to deal with what I do on a NORMAL day, they'd be on the floor! And if they felt what I was feeling that day, they'd be in the hospital! Just because I can move with the pain doesn't mean I don't feel it. I do. Every single day. I'm just used to it.

My mom is 2 inches taller after she had her spine fused. She developed scoliosis as a child after she had a kidney removed due to cancer. The also removed a hunk of muscle from her side near the kidney - which caused her spine to curve as she grew. But she didn't have the fusion until she was in her 60's. It was a last resort after many other procedures to cure her pain.

My older brother had an S curve like that. He was much more comfortable after the surgery but he was already wheelchair bound, for other reasons. I wonder what it's like for someone who is otherwise able to move about more freely. Does the fusion prevent a lot of sports etc?

I have a relative who had the surgery. They can’t bend over as such like others but have learned how to adapt. They pick things up off the floor by crouching down and then getting back up again, if that makes sense. They were never sporty so it’s hard to say how it impacted things but they lead a normal life. It’s been about 14 years since the surgery and no negatives that I’m aware of so far.

Across these three studies, morbidly curious people were more likely to have general conspiracist beliefs, perceive conspiracy theories to be more threatening, and display a stronger interest in learning more about conspiratorial explanations.

"Understanding events in our complex, modern world can be challenging, and may lead us to be alert to potential threats, tapping into our ancient morbid curiosity," Scrivner and Stubbersfield concluded. "Morbid curiosity is not inherently bad, but an increased interest in learning about the dangers presented in conspiracy theories can reinforce beliefs that the world is a dangerous place."

This can create a feedback loop that increases anxiety and drives people further down the rabbit hole of conspiracy theories.

She did. 2030 she will be on the bill as per the 2017 decision by Trump and in 2019 they chose 2026 for the new design to be unveiled, in 2022 Biden confirmed he will keep to Trumps timetime for 2030. The original proposal was for 2020 the bill to be redesigned, but Trump's people in 2017 felt that since 2030 the $20 was scheduled for a redesign with new security featured by a existing congressional bill, that it was cheaper to wait for 2030 than to rush the bill earlier, creating all new plates, only to then remake new plates for 2030 again. It saved $200 million in tax payer dollars by keeping to the 2030 plan, and it is happening. Now original Obama proposed a 2020 date in 2016, but the Office of Inspector General shut it down because their decision "was made outside of the note development governance structure and without the recommendation of the ACD(Advanced Counterfeit Deterrence Steering Committee)". And Obama only made a suggestion, it did not become official until 2019.

Yes, both mother and her child survived. The dog was euthanized, as it did not die after police shot it. It must have been a very ill-trained dog. It was the boyfriend's dog who got his girlfriend, the mom, to dog sit for him.

They used to do this in Yarmouth, MA. It was a small inlet (pond sized) salt water marsh. They played several movies in the different lots. If this is from that location RT. 28 is to the right in the photo. The road leading to the other drive in theaters is behind the screen. Another theater would be to the left. I was too young to be allowed to see it, but my sisters went.

My high school did a swim in movie in the late 90s. They projected Jaws on the wall of the swimming pool room, and we were only allowed to be in about 4 feet of water. While watching the movie a scuba diver would swimm around and grab people's feet.

And we all know: at 7 all children loose their entire skull including the teeth to be replaced with the adult skull and teeth. for 3 weeks in between the stages the children have so-called "Flacid head syndrome" in wich the head is empty and floppy. This is the age children's heads can be filled with knowledge that is poured in through orifices like the nose and ears and can only be done in this period. The knowledge needs te settle for up to 20 years under supervised circumstances like schools or dental practices. It can still leak out which was a problem in older times but is in modern times resolved with headphones and mouth-clogging hamburgers. The more you know...

My cousin had this done! It was like looking through a tube, no peripheral vision he says. He lost his sight at 18mths old, and gained it back after 30 odd years. He was one of the first people to have it done in England. It’s actually pretty incredible, and absolutely life-changing.

    Woogie

Answering another comment: the tooth is used because the body is less likely to see it as foreign tissue and reject it. They cut the tooth to make a frame of sorts, and insert a lens into that frame. That is then implanted into the eye. A porcelain ‘shell’ is constructed, which is hand painted to match the iris of the other eye (or a whole new one if both eyes), and is inserted and removed daily, like a contact lens. Underneath the shell is pretty confronting, it’s kind of raw tissue with a hole in the middle. But seeing the change (pardon the pun) in my cousin makes my uncomfortableness an invalid thing. After seeing him change it a few times, and the care and cleaning he goes through, it’s actually really beautiful. He values this gift so much, and knows it is his only chance at any sight at all (the other eye was removed as it was dead). So while it’s really good that I can contribute and educate on this, I don’t like that it’s considered horrifying…. It’s life giving!

Forgot to add, he had his tooth implanted in his cheek tissue for about 6 months or so, to give it a blood supply, and then it was removed from there and into the eye. He likes to say that he got a half facelift at the same time. He does have incredible skin at the age of 57 to be fair.

I just posted a brief explanation, reach out if you have any questions! My understanding is it was a German discovery, and my cousin was the third person in the world to have his version of it done. His surgeon was Christopher Lui in Brighton, UK. I think he trained under the team that developed it. It’s fascinating!

As a kid, I grew up watching PBS (70s-80s). It was far different than today as there were a lot of surgeries shown. I recall seeing one such surgery where wires were inserted into the eyelids of certain Asians as they wanted the crease. So odd how people are so dissatisfied with what God gave them. I would never butcher myself for the sake of vanity.

They refused to write at school, yet suddenly wrote outsider radio plays and short stories to numerous sources. They were sent to Broadmoor Hospital (which is also a very isolated high-risk prison) and possibly treated against their human rights. June is alive, and is an 'outsider author' and her family say she was treated unjustly.

I think they both were. The "crimes" they committed were relatively minor, nonviolent offenses, yet they were committed indefinitely to the psychiatric hospital, most likely due to their perceived creepiness. And to this day there are doubts as to who was instigator of the crimes - it looks different from different accounts and points of view.

And this is from a 2023 report from the Wikipedia page: so it’s fairly recently updated if anyone wants to go and have a read. “June Gibbons has disputed this, stating that this was simply the effect of their speech impediment. I always told my students, if I don't see them, I don't care. Cheating does not define learning and human brain development. Neither does memorizing meaningless information. However, I did care that they were able to develop critical thinking and apply it to everyday life. Unfortunately, this is not the most important issue in standardized educational systems. After one of cases like this (I'm not sure if it was this one or another), in early 2000s, Japan decided to check on suspiciously long living citizens. It turned out that in many places, especially in rural areas, people just... didn't care enough to report that someone died. Not even to gain any money, they just didn't want to or couldn't travel a long way to the nearest office to report it. Some of the people who officially still were alive were born in 1850s-1870s...

I read recently that practices similar to this might be part of the reason for some countries being seen as producing unusual amount of 100+ year olds. Apparently, there's a correlation between the amount of very old people and poor records keeping. This leads some scientist to believe that many of those 100+ yos are either dead or lying about their age because there're no viable documents to prove it.

That piece of garbage got life. After he tried to appeal it by saying that his child shouldn’t have been allowed to say that he saw his father k**l his mother at three years old to child services… And that the bullet they found near the woman skeleton shouldn’t of been admissible as evidence… Yeah what an absolute piece of s**t. Oh also he buried her in the backyard but the cops didn’t even bother to notice that the yard had been you know recently disturbed? Great work. 👎

Why are people so determined to believe that you can tell someone's criminal tendencies or mental health status from a single photo? It's like the modern-day version of phrenology. Outward looks DO NOT tell you if someone is safe to be around or if they're dangerous.

It's a form of victim blaming and self reassurance. They want to somehow shift the blame on the victim for not being able to tell straight away that they were dealing with a criminal, and at the same time reassure themselves that this could never happen to them because they would be able to tell by their looks.

Perhaps if she would have gotten help for mental problems it wouldn't have gotten to that point. Amerika. We'd rather warehouse people for profit than help them. Not everyone can be treated, and may need to be removed from society in a humane way, but incarceration isn't the answer.

I just read a bit about the real incident. Makes the movie kinda seem stupid. He was allegedly exiled from his home country (Iran), and ended up living in an airline terminal (in France). Except he wasn't actually exiled from Iran, although I can't blame him for not wanting to go back. But he was also offered residency in both France and Belgium, but didn't because they wouldn't allow him to register as "Sir, Alfred Mehran," including "Sir" and the misplaced comma. So basically he was just a rando crazy guy who liked living in an airport as a beggar.

TBF the plants in this garden are often found in domestic gardens. Lots of plants are toxic, some deadly. In my own garden I have several poisonous plants including foxgloves, bluebells, opium poppies, oleander, aconitum and datura. Grown for their attractiveness not for any nefarious reason. Remember medicines are often derived from plants. Foxgloves have given us heart medications for example. Painkillers from poppy, malaria treatment from the bark of the quiona tree - quinine.

Maybe it was a sign of being o so slightly on the autism spectrum, but I used to HATE wearing lab gloves. (Also, no watch -- even when people wore watches --, no jewelery, no glasses despite being nearsighted) But I loved chemistry and biology lab. So I got various chemical burns on my hands. None that ever caused any discomfort, but I had yellow, red, purple and black spots on my hands at various times throughout college. A lye burn was kinda cool in a wierd way: it turned a chunk of the thumb part of my palm yellow.... and slippery when wet. See, lye permeates your skin until it reaches the lipid (fat) tissue beneath your skin, at which point it chemically reacts with those lipids to combine with them to form soap. So I literally had my own personal soap under my skin.

In the town where I used to work, there was one road with lots of bus stops (lots of different routes starting and finishing there) and some poor woman had a fall, landed in the road and her head was run over by a bus. obviously, awful for the family of that poor woman, but I can't imagine how awful the bus driver must have felt. it's not a fast moving road, lots of crossings, traffic lights, and the aforementioned bus stops, so she must have fallen at a point where he really couldn't do anything to prevent it.

One hell of a roofie more like. There is no way of knowing how many people are múrdered on cruises, because there are no reliable statistics even for how many people die or go overboard. Operating on international waters and keeping secretive about the numbers allows cruise companies to get away with virtually no accountability.

Really? Were is your source for your claims? Googled him and it says his hands were deformed, a rare birth defect called radioulnar synostosis. Source here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsutomu_Miyazaki

I can't see how this would be possible. No matter what, they're going to come out when she was asleep, or doing a p*o.

See what patriarchy can do to people ? (and yes, trying so hard to conform to the idea of "women are perfect so they never fart" is a direct result of patriarchy)

It literally didn't say anything about the film, just a picture. It also didn't say he got vengeance, he just BEGAN his quest. Reading comprehension is hard.

I've read the original book and I simply don't see this interpretation. It is, however, directly stated that Peter Pan may be an angel that helps escort the souls of dead children to heaven, 'going part of the way with them so that they will not be afraid'.

There is a little part which says Peter starts fighting on the side of the pirates because he wants to make sure they get a fair fight, and that he also is enjoying himself.

I don't know the legality of this. But charging and trying both of them for the crime might be a solution. It can, and has, been done in some countries.

Putting an innocent person in jail just because the police can’t tell the difference and they say “fck it, lock them both up” is not a great solution at all. That’s horrifying, actually.

I guess they mean it was so horrific that they had to warn people, and they had a priest around in case anyone needed spiritual support. Clearly just a publicity stunt though.
