Samantha Scroggin, who runs the 'Walking Outside in Slippers' blog about parenting, told Bored Panda all about how families can develop fun (and weird!) little rituals that might seem quirky to others but help all of us deal with hard times. Read on for our full interview with her!

My male cousin and I attended the same college. As we were making our way out of Freshman Orientation, he yells in a tone of disgust, “Stop asking me to be your baby-daddy. I’m your brother!” I wanted to die.
my little brother says very weird thing on propose in front of people like, "did you know that ate my scab once?' or something like that
Whenever me and my dad buy mice for our snake, the person helping us always asks if we want mice with white or dark fur.... My dad's response is always ..."He's not to picky, white or dark meat is fine". :)
Ok, I'm not English-speaking person, so what's mean black meat? Some part of poultry or something? I know punch of joke 😉
As I understand, white meat is breast and dark meat should be the leg. The puritans made this up because they feared the name of the bodyparts to be too sexual.

"One of my favorite ways to spend time with my husband and two kids is by goofing around, and I love little rituals and routines. Aside from the basic routines like waking up for school and work and having breakfast, and brushing teeth and reading books before bed, we love to pull out our karaoke machine and cheer each other on as we take turns singing Disney classics," Samantha, the founder of 'Walking Outside in Slippers,' told Bored Panda about the fun and lovable traditions in her own family.
"I think having little rituals and traditions unique to your family makes for important lasting memories the entire family can cherish. Those little quirky moments will probably stand out in a child’s memory much more than the everyday stuff," she told Bored Panda.
I'm an only child in my mind too. I also have a twin.

Wha.............................................................!
u have raised ur son well. this is one of the most harmless and funny practical jokes I have come across in a while. I'm def trying this with my mom/friends.
Love it. Once when my cousins were at daycare and didn't want to leave when their mother sent their uncle to pick them up my cousins both claimed they didn't know him so they could stay... uncle was not amused, and had to leave without the kids
That sounds like George and Fred Weasley pretending to be the other one :)
You're raising a terrific son. He's obviously intelligent and quick with a comeback. I hope you laugh heartily when he does this.
that kinda reminds me on the first harry potter movie when harry was going into the platform and fred told his mom he was george
My dad taught my daughter to randomly say mummy farted when we were at the shops. Well One day I was at the checkout and my daughter comes out with "phoar, mummy farted, you stinky" even though I didn't. Thanks dad lol.
In Samantha's opinion, rituals just like that help bring a little bit of light and a pinch of laughter into our lives that have changed much since the start of the Covid-19 lockdowns. "Life can be challenging, especially in a pandemic. Previously basic practices like getting up and going to school have changed entirely. For my family and me, humor has been a great way to help cope with the changes."
She continued: "If my kids see Mom and Dad still laughing and joking, their situation will probably feel a little less scary. We’re OK, and so are they. My kids also love when they can make us crack up over some little comic they drew or joke they tell. Laughing together is a positive experience all around."
For Samantha, there is only one way forward—fully embrace the weirdness and the goofiness! "At least in my family, we know we’re a bunch of weirdos and we embrace that. We all like to perform and act and be silly. But I think the way you behave is normal to you and your family. The key is to embrace the differences between individuals and families, and know that it’s those differences and quirks that make us all special," she shared, and we fully agree with her.
my family throws it to you if you say pass, so make sure you say can you HAND me a napkin lol
The answer is yes, but you do nothing because you are being asked if you have the ability. The same thing with will you ??? Just answer yes, it drives people nuts ( lol )

In a series of in-depth interviews, Bored Panda previously spoke about late-night TV shows, how they’ve been adapting to the Covid-19 pandemic, and how to get noticed by hosts like Fallon with Mike Sington, an LA-based entertainment, pop-culture, and celebrity expert who is known as Hollywood’s Ultimate Insider.
According to entertainment expert Mike, US late-night TV shows have been adapting very well to the year-long coronavirus pandemic, the lockdowns, and the constantly-changing restrictions. Now that multiple Covid vaccines are being rolled out, things are getting even better for the entertainment industry.
Mike revealed to us that one thing that we can most certainly look forward to is an easing of restrictions in New York City where they’ll be allowing audiences of up to 100 people in April. Talk about a breath of fresh air!
How often does a family get into drunk fights about Biology, asking as the husband of a biologist.
"No mom, people don't usually have 3 arms... no dad, 5 isn't right either. Go to sleep both of you"

I've always wondered about that "well, I NEVER" comment. What does that mean? Well you never what!
I mean this probably only applies to this specific situation but likely "well I NEVER imagined I'd have to wash another woman's fart out of my clothes after a trip to the craft store"
Load More Replies..."I’m sure the shows will take advantage of that. My prediction is the late-night shows will be back to where they were pre-Covid this summer," the expert told Bored Panda.
In Mike’s opinion, there are several things that each and every single one of us can do if we want our posts to get noticed by Fallon and his team on social media. It’s all about persistence, patience, and (you could argue most importantly) having a fun, witty, interesting true story to tell.
“All the shows have social media teams that are writing and monitoring content. To grab the late-night hosts’ attention, tag the show! They will see it, they monitor every post they are tagged in,” Mike said.
I don’t get it. I’m a millennial. Would love this. The one parent I have using social media is awkward as hell with it.
What is wrong with this? It's actual original content and not just crappy inspirational quotes you normally see.

“If the post particularly stands out, they will forward it to the writing team for the show. Other than that, it’s just a matter of luck, or a story gaining traction on social media. The writers are monitoring social media in general, combing it for content to use. You never know when something will catch their eye, and a great story is likely to pop and catch their attention."
Mike is a former senior executive at NBCUniversal, so he intimately knows how the entertainment industry works. Earlier, he detailed to us that TV hosts source material directly from social media because it’s a great way to engage with their audiences and stay connected with them.
Doesn't say leave. Kids just look and start thinking of meal requests. And I had a friend that would stand there reminiscing the past few year by the expiry dates.
Load More Replies...That is horrible. Most, if not all of my coats would be ruined if they were washed in a washer or dried in a dryer.
I agree with it being horrible for ruining someone's coat, but The manipulation thing is what I think is sad. It sounds like the woman might just wants company to stay longer. A lot of older people get lonely. That's what I meant by sad- just thought I'd clear that up.

Load More Replies...There is a poem by a lady called Jenny Joseph called Warning. The first line is " When I am old, I will wear purple". Looks like your Grandma went a step further than this.
When I was a kid my grandma would fart and then sing "oh listen to the rumble, oh listen to the roar, someone let out a healthy fart and blew us all over the floor!"
Even though late-night shows have lots of great writers to work on the material that we all love to see on our screens, there’s not much that can “top the personal, and often very funny, contributions of the fans themselves,” Mike highlighted.
I used to do something similar in the pool...needless to say, innocent passerbys were not pleased.
Oh man, I pretended I'd drowned at a birthday party when I was about 5 or so. Waited until they pulled me out of the pool before I opened my eyes and said 'JUST KIDDING' Oh I hate myself for having done that.

things like this make me sad, never be embarrassed about something like that because one day you won't get them anymore and you'll feel bad. I remember about a year or two ago my fiance got upset when his grandparents sent another box (they send several a month sometimes) they are always filled with calendars pens and random clothing for his (our) youngest. Trust me when I say two years ago I probably had over 25 calandars. Lol. He called them and said, you guys don't need to waste your money, we are fine, but thank you." when he hung up I said don't you dare do that ever again. He said "Why?" I said because one day those boxes won't be coming anymore and you will miss it. You are lucky, you still have your granparents to "spoil" you, Mine have been gone for over 15 years" he has never complained again
My mom did that when I went away, so I had five girls helping me open my package once
Oh my husband, daughter and I do that, if one of us comes into the room. We stage-whisper "pretend you're asleep" as well.
In Mike’s opinion, late-night hosts have done a fabulous job surfing the waves caused by the constantly shifting Covid-19 regulation landscape. They’ve had to greatly adapt to the new rules, a lack of a live audience, and a world that spoke almost exclusively about pandemic-related topics.
“I commend the late-night hosts for soldering on during this months-long lockdown. So many people are isolated and alone now, and they are welcome and familiar faces we can safely bring into our homes,” he said.
This is not funny. What a blatant disrespect of privacy and abuse of [parental] power.

“I would even say what they have been doing over the past several months has been somewhat heroic because it hasn’t been easy for them. They knew early on though, the need was there, and they stepped up to the challenge.”
Entertainment expert Mike believes that the material that late-night shows have been putting out over the last year has been great, even if it’s been different. He’s seen an improvement in the quality, in his pro opinion.
My in-laws have lots of wild turkeys around them. I doubt anyone would survive this game around there. We counted over 600 in their hay field one evening.
Well, have you explained female anatomy to him yet? Otherwise it's not at all weird he doesn't know about bodies unlike his own. We all tend to think our experiences are universal until we learn they are not.
Used to think some girls had penises because I didn’t understand some kids going into the other gender’s bathrooms with parents. Androgynous kid in my swim class always had his goggles on and after when we all showered with parents help obviously we were naked, I was like three. Talking to my mom a few years later I was very confused to learn it was a boy.
Some girls do have penises! Transgender girls.

At one point he explained that you should watch out, wood ducks can pop any where. I grabbed a pillow hit my daughter with it and shouted "Wood Duck". That was several years ago, she's in her 20's now and I'm in my 60's every once in a while the wood duck attack still happens.
Myfamily did this but with bananas lol. THey would hide bananas everywhere lol
“I think their material has been better than ever. Over the past year, there’s been a wealth of material in the news to utilize. The energy is there, but it’s a bit different. They’ve had to adjust to trying times and having no audience, but have done so admirably.”
He continued: “What they’re doing is paying off in the ratings which have been stronger than ever. They’ve been providing much-needed comfort and familiarity that people are craving now."
Should have cut the whole tree down. Then, he would have been stumped...
i was at lake michigan swing , and i loved this piece of drift wood i found, i threw it into the lake and then swam to go get it because i missed my piece of drift wood
My step dad cut down a peach tree (I think?) In the '90's in our back yard because his favorite team, the Crimson tide, lost. People get serious about college football where I am.

Which of these tweets did you enjoy the most, dear Readers? Do you have any #MyFamilyIsWeird stories that you’d like to share with everyone? Let us know what you think below!
This made me think of something: did your parents hide your Easter basket for Easter morning? My whole Catholic family does this. It was only after I had my first kid that I learned no one else does this. I started looking for a good place to hide her Easter basket and my husband (at the time)thought I was crazy hiding the basket. I started asking around and only my family did it. We hide eggs off course, too. But it was fun waking up Easter morning searching for the basket. Best hiding place is the dryer.
To keep my son occupied and make Birthdays last longer I'd write clues for him to follow to find at least one gift. They weren't easy, he had to think them through and some, weren't easy to get to. I "hid" one in the middle of our pool. He'd end up in the front yard, basement, back yard, kitchen etc. The best part was he didn't want help, no matter how hard. I couldn't tell my husband, he'd tell him where it was.
My parents said "birthday fairies". they were the ones who decorated the downstairs (yknow, that tacky plastic tablecloth, wall banner, and birthday plates) and i believed it til abt 5th grade
When my daughter was about 3, I bought a 4' tall inflatable birthday cake. It became a tradition that I'd plug in the cake after the kids went to bed the night before their birthday and put the presents around it for them to walk out to in the morning. I've also gotten it out when I've had my mom over for dinner on HER birthday. Same for my brother and my dad. Pretty much, if you're at our house to celebrate your birthday, the cake will be inflated. There have even been several times that someone has actually remembered to set it up on MY birthday! My kids are 18 and almost 21 now and I think it's the best purchase I've ever made! We have years and years of pictures of different family members sitting by the cake on their birthday!
Because my son is autistic and does not do well trick or treating. I make my kids halloween baskets from the pumpkin king. They wear costumes and watch nightmare b4 xmas. Its cool.
My friend's family would always dress up in matching pyjamas for their annual Christmas card. One time they couldn't find matching pyjamas for the dad, so what did they do? Body paint. They painted his entire body (not very well) with the pyjama pattern. They could've just gone with a different set, but no. No he wasn't wearing underwear. Knowing how I felt seeing that on Christmas morning, I can't imagine how my friend felt knowing that had been sent to everyone he knew.
That would be a hilarious Christmas card!! Make fake drunk and disorderly mug shots and send it to the prudest relatives.

With certain friends, our message is "Doi" There is a long story but basically, it is in honor of said friend's down syndrome brother who had disdain for our teen antics. If he thought we were being juvenile, he would walk by and say, "Dubba doi" and shoot us disappointed looks.
There was actually an article about how to do this in a magazine...maybe 60 years ago. I think it was Women's Day. How to cook the roast while you drive to the cottage.
This must have been back in the 1940-50's when the engines were not covered in a lot of plastic sh*t but rather open so you could see the manifold - and attach things to it! Good ol' days <3
Load More Replies...There's books on how to do this. People still do it today. You can even buy a contraption to put on your car's wheel to make ice cream or butter.
Cool, I am so getting that for my engineer nephew!

There was a whole cookbook published about this, It works and it's cool! I think it's called Manifold Destiny.
Once upon a time there was a list of things you could cook on a hot manifold.
And that is weird because . . . ? People have been cooking on the car's engine/manifold for years.
not everyone knows about it. only a small fraction of people probably know about this

Unfortunately, women have to be constantly paranoid.

When my wife sings, I go outside to prove to the neighbors that I'm not beating her...
I was in a store like Home Depot, large with nothing that absorbed sound, and my several months old son let out a noise, kind of a scream but more of a large volume noise that made my teeth hurt. People all around us stopped and stared. I don't know if they thought I'd hurt him or what but he was just fine, started laughing. He never did it again I really wanted him to do it again, just so I could prove to people it really happened.
My mother did this in my first year of college but she called campus security. This is not a healthy thing to do.
It's also an illegal thing to do. US colleges are bound by the The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and if you were 18, cannot release that information to anyone.
Load More Replies...If your college told your mom what class you were in (and you were 18), that's a The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) violation and you should have reported them. They're not allowed to release that information

My region in Spain has two big festivities one the national festivity and another one the local one (commemorating the christian armies conquering the area from the muslim ones). When my now husband and I were dating, he'd embarrass me by asking in Tiffany's, or Cartier, If they happened to have a sterling silver spork? Of course they didn't. And I'd get so embarrassed. My family has a vaguely cult - like tradition that everybody does when they turn a certain age or marry into the family- like an initiation XD all safe and purely silly, of course. I would say more, but we aren't allowed...
My mother was freakish about cleanliness, and also had a very prickly personality. She was always carrying some kind of cleaning product, or implement. Every time she walked by my dad carrying a broom, he would say, “Going for a ride?”. We thought it was hysterical. Her, not so much.

My family tells made up stories about people we don't know or even neighbours we don't know so well. Person passing by might get a whole life story. She recently bought pretty house for her and the kids and last vacation they spent hiking in Asia." Our summer cottage neighbour went 20 years by made-up first name until grandpa said something like: "his name isn't Jack, it's Patrick". I think we also invented a profession for him. I love that these stories are mostly wholesome and funny.
I do this with a friend of mine when we are sitting and people watching.
Load More Replies...Me and my sister would make up weird songs because one time she was trying to write a song and asked me for help. I changed the lyrics to make no sense and it was hilarious. So now we make up songs about random things. 😂
When I was a teenager my mom, sister and I went to pick up my father from the airport. When we arrived we found a wheelchair in the parking lot and my mom wanted to bring it back into the terminal. She convinced me to sit in it and she wheeled me into the terminal, people holding the door open for us and finally I had enough and got up and started walking away. As soon as I did that she screamed out “it’s a miracle!”
My region in Spain has two big festivities one the national festivity and another one the local one (commemorating the christian armies conquering the area from the muslim ones). Our family has the tradition of never eating spanish food on the national day (usually we eat french but it can be something else) and ti eat moroccan food in the regional festivity. I always found it a funny way of laughing with this old outdated festivities.
When my now husband and I were dating, he'd embarrass me by asking in Tiffany's, or Cartier, If they happened to have a sterling silver spork? Of course they didn't. And I'd get so embarrassed. And hide in a corner. So to get him back, I bought a silver spoon, and had it cut into a spork. And gave it to him for christmas. and Spork Club was born. With rules, and rituals, and embelishments. spork-6051...6b0991.jpg
We have a very hill-y uneven back yard, but our front yard is nice and flat. So I practice sword and bo work in the front of the house, in sight of all the neighbors. My kids hate it, I am a horrible embarrassment and ruining their lives. Not gonna stop though.
