I know that there are plenty of Pandas here who simply adore movies just like me. So here’s a question for you, folks: what matters more in a film—the journey or the destination? Does a film have to have a decent ending in order to be good? And does a bad, cliched, and tone-deaf ending necessarily ruin what was otherwise a perfectly decent flick?

Well, these people over on Reddit certainly think so. In a viral thread created by Minecraftplayer48, these redditors shared how, in their opinion, some film endings went disastrously wrong and spoiled the entire experience. How bad can things really be? We’re about to find out.

Potentially huuuuge spoilers up ahead, dear Pandas, so read on at your own risk. (Or just, you know, shut your eyes really hard and scroll down blindly as far as you need to go.) Remember to upvote the opinions that you agree with and let us know why you think so in the comments.

I reached out to writer and Bram Stoker Award-winning editor Doug Murano from South Dakota to get his take on what it takes to create a good story and how to craft a great ending. "As strange as it may sound, writing and piloting an airplane share an important similarity: taking off and landing are the parts that are most fraught with peril. These are times of transition and uncertainty. Most competent writers can write a solid middle, but hooking the reader (taking off) and delivering a satisfying ending (landing) often separate the competent from the good and the good from the great," he told Bored Panda. You find the rest of my interview with writer and editor Murano below.

The issue here is they were never supposed to be aliens. They were supposed to be demons, and it would have been holy water that affects them since our protagonist was a former priest. Changes were made and plotholes appeared.

That was not the point of the movie. It was about "signs", reasons for certain things that at the time one cannot explain, have meanings

Exactly. Like why the girl left water glasses everywhere, why the the boy had asthma, why the brother was a baseball player; the movie's message is that everything has a reason for happening.

My husband and I came up with what we believe is the only plausible explanation for this movie: the aliens were doing an alien reality-TV sort of thing, like Survivor. This planet was chosen *because* of how unsuitable it is. Nothing else makes sense.

Mars is a completely hostile environment, but we've got our eye on it for future colonization.

That's because it's the easiest destination if we ever want to colonize another planet - mainly due to its proximity. Moreover, all the problems with Mars are the the basic problems with space travel at large (radiation, gravity, atmosphere/oxygen, water). Yeah Mars is hostile, but only as hostile as space is anyway. None of the other planets in the solar system are any better - in fact, plenty are even worse. There's a reason we're considering Mars rather than Venus (Venus does have an atmosphere, but, wowhee, what an atmosphere that is!).

This complaint has always bugged me. It never says the aliens were invading, they could be stranded. Also, humans went to the moon, which is an environment that will instantly kill us. The aliens can survive fairly well on earth. Humans go to inhospitable environments (eg antarctica) all the time.

Ahat wrecked it for me wasn't the silly ending, but the fact that the aliens who were trying to get in made the same scrabbling noises my raccoon friends made when they were trying to get cat crunchies out of the box.

People Are Sharing What Movie Endings Were So Bad, They Ruined The Entire Film (30 Pics) Lucy. I hate that movie. It's a really good concept and movie until the very. It tells the story about a girl that is kidnapped and used as a drug mule for this new drug, but the bag inside her leaks and she gets overdosed. This doesn't kill her though, she's now able to use more than 10% of her brain (which I know is complete bullsh*t cuz we use 100% of our brain but not at the same time) and gets superpowers. Then for some reason she needs to take more of the drug to reach complete usage of her brain and, when she does, she becomes a flash drive. A FLASH DRIVE. SHE BECOMES A FLASH DRIVE

I had trouble with the entire premise to start with. It is incredibly stupid to think people "only use 10-15-20% of their brains" If that were true the safest possible place to shoot someone would be in the head, you'd have an 80-90% chance of missing anything important. And even worse, in this movie, even though no one in history had ever "used more than 1% of their brains" or whatever, the scientists somehow knew exactly what kind of ludicrous magic abilities someone who used x% more would have. "At 25% she'll be able to fly" "at 50% she'll be able to create things with a thought ... etc. It was just .... so, so stupid.

This was a science fiction movie with a science fiction premise that made for an interesting concept, even if it is not realistic. It could have been that she was able to multiply the capability of her brain, but that would not have been as interesting a concept, plot-wise. A lot of science fiction is unrealistic, like faster than light speed, time travel, yet we watch those movies eagerly.

"At the risk of mixing metaphors, good writing places the variables in view and requires the audience to do the math in order to reach full understanding," Murano said.

"When it comes to endings, specifically, I think a lot of writers give into the urge to say too much and do the math for the audience. There's no fun in that—and it's especially disappointing to see it happen when the rest has been well executed," the writer and editor explained to Bored Panda that when writers trust that their audience will be able to put some things together themselves, instead of having everything handed to them on a silver platter. Your readers are smarter than you might think! Give them the chance to prove it to you.

Well, it is a musical after all. One has to suspend disbelief on those. For musicals, the singing is actually conversation with self or others about a situation. So you have to think it's just talking not singing. The singing (obviously) is for the audience's explanation (and entertainment) as to what is going on in the character's head, not unlike a Greek chorus.

Oh come on, it's metaphorical! Sandy and Danny fly off into the sunset. Also, Sandy didn't change for Danny specifically, it's just her character arc. Through the whole movie she's discovering who she really is inside, and always searching for an identity (just like any high school kid) so she becomes who she feels she is on the inside, finally free.

the alternative ending showed that Will Smith's character was the villain. The zombies had a society and hated him for killing them for no apparent reason. WS'sC realises this and leaves them be. The theme that "different does not equal bad" was beyond the test audience's comprehension. Imagine if Leonardo DV had to put his paintings through a test audience. "no, no we donna like her smile."

The whole "girlfriend" problem of Hollywood where a female role turns into an accessory is the rotten core of this movie. The nostalgia for US pop culture that the last two generations would have no clue of, yet a future one embraces like religion rang false, and 'the pot at the end of the rainbow' ending was as authentic as leprechauns in Antarctica.

I also hate the way the "ugly duckling" trope is used in that movie. They make it sounds as if Samantha is horribly disfigured, when she's in fact quite pretty with a barely visible skin spot around the eye (nothing that a bit of foundation can't hide if she really wishes so...)

I felt the same way. The people at Cinema Sins (if I remember correctly) summed it up pretty well, the narrator said something like: "I understand that's how she might feel about herself, but I have trouble believing that's how other people are treating her". Spot on. It would've been so insightful if she were the non-conventional cutie, chubby, with acne and a sad face expression, and him questioning himself, about this girl, with an attractive personality and non attractive aesthetics, until he gradually starts to actually like her and realising nice girls come in unexpected shapes.

The book is much better, the film ceases to make sense after it deviates from the book about half way through. ... The Girlfriend should be physically unattractive, that's the point, he falls for her online so how she actually looks does not change his feelings (same Hollywood prettying up is in Mortal Engines and even GOT, Tyrion should be hideous, particularly after being injured).

Part of the book was that she didn't look that different from her character other than the large birthmark, the movie and the book are completely different, the movie never follows the book, the character names are about the same and that's about it

this doesn’t happen in the book and for a good reason. he mentions that without oasis, the world would probably crumble since so much of society is based around it. also most people jobs are inside the oasis. ANOTHER THING he and samantha (art3mis) are both not supposed to be attractive. it sorta ruined to movie for me. i feel like the movie itself would be fine on its own besides the ending, but they changed so much of the book. and don’t groan because usually they change small things in movies for the sake of smoothness on screen, but it felt like they read the back of the book and were like “uh yeah okay i think i get it.” sorry for the long rant. also can we all just give a moment of silence for ernest cline who had to deal with this s**t?

I don’t understand why they feel the need or “remaking” a story if they are going to change the plot completely. Then make a new movie. If you are going to adapt a book follow the plot.

I secons that. Of course, a movie works differently than a book, so some changes have to be done. But don't do any changes which are not necessary - like Faramir in Lord of the Rings wanting to bring the Ring to Gondor - he was DIFFERENT from his brother, that was the whole point! Also Peter Jackson just left out a scene because he did not like it. And don't get me started on The Hobbit. I watched the first film with the expectation to see a movie vaguely based on the book and therefore could enjoy it, but even that did not work with the second part. Duh. Still triggers me, as you can see.

Yes, we are just guessing what was beyond the hilltop. There could have been dozens of ways that he could have survive - shelters, large objects between him and the fireballs, etc. The point of that scene was that Tom Cruise's character thought he had been killed.

The ending of any creative project, whether it’s a movie, a book, or a play, is important because it sets the mood with which the audience goes back into their daily lives. End the movie with the fabled Hollywood happy ending and your audience will feel picked up. (Though according to some researchers, there are various types of happy endings in films and we can’t just mix them up into one single blob.)

Meanwhile, ending the film on a sad or depressing note will leave your audience feeling deflated. Surprise surprise! And, well, from a business perspective, that’s not what you really want, is it?

You want your viewers to keep coming back for round two of the silver screen (Netflix during the pandemic, but you know what I mean), instead of wistfully looking out the window, thinking philosophical thoughts.

People Are Sharing What Movie Endings Were So Bad, They Ruined The Entire Film (30 Pics) Hancock. Loved the premise and seeing Hancock start as this sarcastic, alcoholic, and bitter hero who's hated by everyone and then turn into an actual hero who people look up to and respect is touching. The PR angle for a superhero movie was interesting and unique. But then all of that is ruined by the lovers twist. I'm fine with either the superhero PR angle or the tragic lovers angle, but they're way too different and the latter is introduced too suddenly. Hancock really feels like two separate movies stitched together

So there’s a certain amount of pressure that moviemakers feel to make audiences feel happy. Of course, this doesn’t happen in every single case (the viral Reddit thread alone proves that), however, some films really do feel as though they’ve had happy endings shoehorned in, no matter that the tone of the project was very different, to begin with.

At the end of the day, what viewers really want (besides a bucketful of popcorn nom nom) is to be entertained. And one of the ways this can be achieved is by making the story immersive. If the viewer forgets they’re watching a film and feels like they’re inside the story and that it’s real, you’ve got them: hook, line, and sinker.

However, immersion means believability. And believability means consistency. Or rather, a certain amount of consistency in the plot. The audience has to believe that the inner workings of the story and the world make sense. There must be a logical consistency to how all the pieces interconnect.

To me, what I didn't like about the ending - which is not bad by itself, it's just something regarding my personal taste - is this perpetual "same with same = happy ending" philosophy shown in many kids' films. Elsa was miserable because she was different and now "she is where she belongs, and now she's happy". Shrek, well, I get it, it's a well executed parody where the point is a happy ever after of a wonderful "ugly" couple and their happy ever after, but again -> same with same. I don't want to over react here, but I would wish to see some more cross-culture in American films and without it being represented as a big deal. Seen plenty in Japanese cartoons, on the other hand.

    Minha Khan
    Community Member

You do realize that the theme of Shrek as loving yourself for who you are, not that if you look like someone you must automatically be with them to be happy. It’s why Fiona changed to the ogre. She only didn’t like being an ogre because everyone always said she was ugly that way. In Frozen II, she doesn’t know how to be queen, and she is scared she will ruin it all. Then she sees a place where she feels like she belongs and she goes there. She goes to be happy, not to be with the same people. It’s not about “same with same.” It’s about being with who makes you feel happy, and loving yourself. And Japanese culture and movies are very different from American culture. That comparison isn’t valid.

We didn't see the coronation; we saw the presentation afterwards. The coronation would have been indoors, traditionally in a church or cathedral. So Elsa easily could have been there and snuck away before the presentation.

Mmm... “People partner up in order of attractiveness” is maybe one way to put it, but another way is that people who wouldn’t have ordinarily given each other a chance ended up doing that. The jock was attracted to the weird girl and the prom queen and the burnout were attracted to each other. I get your point that attractiveness isn’t really an indicator of growth, but I don’t think it’s an inconsistent ending.

Your comment is actually the same as your interpretation of the movie. Are you saying it is bad that the nerdy guy is left without a girl? Would you rather see him also get a girl at the end, so each character is happily mated? It is not girls/guys each one of them get at the end of the film - it is acceptance and understanding. It is vulnerability, when you can let someone see you without your mask. Yep, he did not get a girl, but he became the speaker for them all, he wrote that essay and they all agreed he's the one to do it. It is recognition of his worth and his talents. (I do agree with the makeover of the weird girl part - in 2021 it seems unnecessary.)

Man, whoever wrote that missed the entire premise which was not teenagers being judgy. It was representing a kid from each walk of life, from the outcast to the most popular. They came together for one day and walked away more understanding and enlightened that they were not so different from one another but all part of this life, this hard life as adolescents. I think they all showed tremendous growth in their character arc. I know when I watched, and most people my age who watched, could identify with at least one character...from the princess to the janitor. KInda pisses me off how such a shallow viewer could miss the mark by so much. They best stick to Marvel.

And that respect for the inner logic of the story applies to all films. Yes, even fantasy and sci-fi films! For example, you can’t be adding dragons willy-nilly to a story where dragons have been extinct for thousands of years or one where there are giant flying whales instead. You also wouldn’t add someone who speaks in a modern dialect, unless it’s a comedy or you’re doing it on purpose for whatever other reason.

So if an ending doesn’t match the tone or the inner logic of a story, the audience will notice and (odds are) won’t like it very much. There’s a bond of mutual respect between the audience and filmmakers that gets cut if the latter don’t abide by the laws of the story they’ve created. Or, in other words, it’s simply not polite to invite others into a world you’ve created only to pull the rug from under their feet (unless it’s a slapstick comedy or the twist is really, _really_ gosh darn good).

I have nothing against the mother's name creating a bond between the two heroes, I just thought it felt unnatural. People would usually say "need to save my mom", if you get what I mean. Also, Batman's motivations to fear Superman were also executed kind of poorly, made look Batman as someone less intelligent than he is. This whole film, in my opinion, was a missed chance.

I always took the mother's name thing as a way for Superman to be humanized in Batman's mind. It wasn't just that the mother's shared the same name.

"Pretty weak" is pretty nice.Batman, the personification of vigilante law himself, wants to kill Superman , because he's too powerful, aka uncontrollable? How hypocritical can you get? And then all that agonizing about the dilemma of power controlled by personal morals ("unchecked") vs. power controlled by outside authirities (then who would watch the watch?) and the solution is "Oh, your mom's name is Martha, too? Well, all right then." ?!?

For me the worst part was the forced death of Superman... like... you have a monster, you have a spear that can kill the monster, you have an experienced warrior who can wield the spear and it's invulnerable to it's component... sure but let's make Superman do it and die you cannot let this job to a woman...

Saw it twice in theaters and over forty times since. The ending was beautiful with amazing music from Hans and Tom, and I was so happy to see many of the plot points finished this year.

Also, not to mention that woody is a literal one of a kind toy that could be worth thousands in the Pixar universe so it's almost inevitable that some toy collector is going to swoop him away from Bo peep and the gang and put him in a display case just like in Toy Story 2 with Al.

Yeah I liked the premise of the movie but the way the plot works is really upsetting. He steals her life, lies to her and forces her to live the rest of her life alone in a ship with her captor. It should have ended with him fixing the capsule and her going back to sleep or maybe it should have started with both waking up because of the failure. But as it is it promotes abusive relations.

I've seen a video where they edited the movie as a thriller instead of a space romance. The movie begins with Jennifer Lawrence waking up and meeting Chris Pratt. You don't know what happened before. There's just this really creepy man staring at her all the time and pretending he woke up at the same time as her. It was brilliant.

Ive read a version where the film should have started when Lawrence's character wakes up and we discover the reason why as she does and then we Pratt's backstory. It seems like Pratt is the villain at first but then we find out what really happens. The film chickens out and tries to make Pratt sympathetic by revealing what happened to him early,.

If for some reason you’ve accidentally spoiled an ending to a movie that you really wanted to watch, there’s really no reason to get upset. At least, according to psychology professor Nicholas Christenfeld, whose research has shown that spoilers don’t ruin a story. Rather, they make you enjoy it even more.

“What we found, remarkably, was if you spoil stories they actually enjoy them more,” Christenfeld said, who repeated his experiment with mystery stories, ironic twist stories, and literary fiction. “Across all three genres, spoilers actually were enhancers. The term is wrong.”

Okay, spoiler!! I actually found the movie's ending much more logical. Convenient twists like the one in the book so Kate could live just don't happen in real life. Why? Well, because: 1. Kate was already in the multiple organ failure stage as far as I remember. No doctor would have performed a transplant for her at that time because it was simply too late, so the organ would have been wasted, instead of going to a patient with real chances. And 2. Even If the transplant was still possible, it would have merely solved her kidney failure problem. Not her cancer too. So yeah, easy way out in the book. Very convenient. But it wouldn't have worked in real life. Not even her own kid couldn't accept it when reading the book - the author said so herself in an interview. The movie, while simplifying quite a lot from the book, at least gave the story the logical, realistic ending.

The ending is totally different. Characters that died weren't supposed to die and characters that lived weren't supposed to live. It's normal for movies to be different from the book they were based on but the movie didn't even carry the same message as the book in this case.

The death ending was used for the Director's cut of the movie. Audiences didn't like the death ending as it was considered too morose so the director had to reshoot it. The death ending follows Samuel L Jackson to the funeral for John Cusack's character, after Cusack molotovs 1408. Funeral ends, Jackson gets back in his car and opens a little box with items that survived the explosion. He uses the tape player, hears the daughter, looks in rear view mirror to see Cusack's burnt body in the back seat which follow into a jump scare where the body opens its eyes. Then we cut back to room 1408 from outside the building where Cusack's ghost is looking out into the city, he hears his daughter behind him and turns to see her spirit. They hold hands and walk into 'the light'. The death ending

Yes, they did explain that part. My issue is, where's the fabric from? Where is the furniture from? Who built those houses? Is there a lumber company around, cutting down trees, etc? What do the kids learn in terms of history? Don't the adults think the kids are going to get curious about pretty much everything, eventually?

The expert pointed out that we don’t always watch movies for the ending. Case in point—we’re more than happy to watch the same films over and over and over again. As someone who rewatches The Lord of the Rings trilogy twice a year, I think he might be on to something.

“The point is, really we're not watching these things for the ending,” Christenfeld said. “I point out to the skeptics, people watch these movies more than once happily, and often with increasing pleasure.”

So, dear Readers, which movies do you think are brilliant but have truly awful endings? What endings would you have loved to see instead? And do you know of any awful movies that have actually well-written endings? Let us know what you think below. The end. That's it, we're done. It's the ending that you wanted, right? Oh, fine, let's end things on a wrong (but thematically really correct) note: here's a list of wholesome pics to boost your mood and make you enjoy life way, way more.

I'll watch the rest, in hopes that the whole "Credence is Aurelius" is just a manipulative lie, but I won't hold out too much hope. But literally, if the Credence/Aurelius thing is true, then that means he was born to a mother who'd been dead for over a year, and a father who was also dead, or at least imprisoned in azkaban long before his conception could even have happened. So yes, it pissed me off. And don't get me started on McGonagall appearing before she was even born...

Plus there’s a huge plot hole-Minerva McGonagall was confirmed to be born in 1935, which was 8 years after Crimes of grinderwald was set. And before you answer “oh she used the time turner”, the time turner can only go back like 5 hours max, so 8 years would be damaging/fatal.

The book ending is completely different and so much better. Why does everything have to have a happy ending hollywood? WHY?!?! Can't we just have a good story with a fitting ending?

Why does everyone have to bring up the damn book. You know it's a movie and even if they wanted to stay by the book, the film would be too long and people would stop watching it. It's been observed that people don't like sitting watching a movie for too long. Leave the two separate and don't watch the movie if you don't like the way hollywood changes it all the time.

It would have been a great movie if they didn't have to have the "tie it up with a bow" ending by meeting Autumn. Tom was the villian of the movie and I think it did a good job of showing that there are 3 sides to every story: his, hers, and the truth.

People Are Sharing What Movie Endings Were So Bad, They Ruined The Entire Film (30 Pics) I hate the ending of a classic 1940s film called Gentleman's Agreement. Gregory Peck plays a journalist who pretends to be Jewish in order to write an article about antisemitism. His girlfriend knows about the ruse and as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that she's a closet antisemite. They argue about this but in the end he stays with her.

Loved this movie. Yes, she was anti-Semitic, but like so many people, it was so subtly ingrained - e.g. the classic (if flawed) question: if you had a choice to go to the sidewalk with a white man or the opposite side with a black man which would you choose? Once she realized her prejudices, she began to change. As another poster wrote it was an awakening. And Peck’s character knew that.

Oh. Huh. I remember seeing a trailer and that was exactly the impression I got - that it's a story like Narnia and intended for children, likely following all the basic tropes that you know inside-out as an adult. But reading the comments, it sounds like a movie I'd like! (I really enjoyed Pan's Labyrinth except for the violence.) They definitely failed to advertise to the intended audience.

I think the main problem with this movie was the advertisements. The advertisements made it look like a typical, kids find a magical world movie like Harry Potter or The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, but it's actually a tragic movie based upon a book and the fantasy is basically just a daydream getaway scenario, not an actual fantasy world.

The talking sloth at the DMV had the wrong teeth? What about his outfit? A real sloth would never wear clothes to cover his natural camouflage if his algae coat. If his physiology can be changed enough to type on a computer, he lives in a world where decorative crowns can exist.

I liked "Wonder Woman" better than the other DC vehicles. Thanks to James Wan, "Aquaman" managed to stay above water. But, I think people went to see it for Jason Momoa, because it certainly wasn't for Amber Heard.

It doesn't sit right because the poor woman went through a pregnancy and has a kid and is living on a boat when she forgets everything every time she falls asleep. That would be a living hell for her!!! They make it out to be this romantic story in which he reminds her of everything each day, but it just comes off as super creepy. And now she's stuck with him on a boat in the middle of nowhere, basically his hostage.

I was only aware of the basic story line (man in relationship with woman who forgets everything about her life every day) and even based on that I thought that the man had to be incredibly selfish. You just CANNOT have a mutual long-term relationship on that premise. The only responsible relationship in that case is one on the level of strangers who get along well. You'd have to let them find out if and how much they like you every day from scratch. Anything more and you're basically just exploiting them.

Yesterday. The concept had enormous potential. It was just so unique. What if only one person knew about the Beatles? The movie was fun and suspenseful. And then it just fell flat when he confessed to essentially doing nothing wrong. Just felt anti-climactic. I kind of felt the same way about the Invention of Lying. Similar concept. I was eager to see it. And then I was unimpressed, but I can't actually remember why.

Eli Some horror movie I saw on Netflix about some sick boy whose family spends a ton of money to get him to some special doctor. The catch is the operation takes days to complete so the whole family has to live in a big house with the doctor for a bit. So as the movie progresses Eli actually starts to get more sick and he believes the doctor is actually killing all the kids she’s supposedly helping. He learns through a girl he talks with outside the house that the last kid didn’t make it and looked about as bad as he did at the time. Sounds pretty cool right? Turns out Eli is the son of the devil, and the girl is his sister. He ends up awakening his evil spirit and killing everyone except his mom and new sister. Kid walks out of the whole thing with demonic super powers and a “I’m a total badass” look on his face. Just [ruined] the whole movie for me.

That movie is awesome, and I liked the ending, so :-P Besides, it makes sense completely. They all realize how dangerous it could be, especially in the hands of power greedy people. So they do the right thing and get rid of it. I see that as a pretty good moral with a solid ending

People Are Sharing What Movie Endings Were So Bad, They Ruined The Entire Film (30 Pics) Source Code. I really enjoyed that movie but those last minutes retroactively ruin the rest of it for me. Clearly tacked on to give a happy ending. I tell everyone I know to watch it but to stop when you see what was clearly intended to be the end and to ignore the last five minutes

I dunno, I kinda like the idea that he's now possessing some random teacher (?). Can you imagine the chaos his life will be now that he's living someone else's life? How people will react when he doesn't recognize his family or friends and doesn't know where he lives? I'd love to see that play out.

That's because the first 20 mins or so were based on a true story. The rest is all fiction tacked on to make the story seem scarier, but it didn't work.

Jeepers Creeper 3 should actually have been J.C 2 and i was very disappointed that we did not get to see what they saw when they held the hand in J.C 3. The new one with Justin's Longs sister 23 years older i have not seen yet, I hope shows us what he is and where he came from

I loved the book so much, and I like Anne Hathaway as an actress, but she wasn't right for this role, and her accent was awful. This is one book I hope that Amazon or Netflix will turn into a series to give it the proper time it deserves

Yes, really there was no "ending" when you think about it. It looked just like the director got fed up and decided to wrap it up just where they were at the moment.

I didn't like the movie or the book. (Spoiler Alert!) The lack of justice for the Salmon family was the main problem for me. (An icicle? Really?) The 2nd thing that ruined it for me was Susie's possession of Ruth, her playing with Ray's pubes, etc.
