Yes, it is. Of course it is! But ... that is considered normal there, and this guy - ok, from a very comfortable position, but still - sees through it, sees the wrong in it and does not participate. He, maybe to a degree we don't really get to grasp from outside, acts against the cultural norm around him in a society that isn't known to be very understanding towards deviants.
