One might think that there’s not much left to explore or discover on Earth, which is why we began putting people in space. However, that’s not quite the truth, as around 58% of our world remains unknown to humans. This means that we can still come across mind-blowing things when we least expect them.

Some of them can be found in this list below collected by our Bored Panda team. Scroll down to find them, and don’t forget to upvote the ones that surprised you the most.

While you're at it, make sure to check out a conversation with conservation photographer and writer Marisa Marulli and wildlife and landscape photographer Melissa Alves, who kindly agreed to chat with us how they capture their incredible works. Read on to find their insights in between the photos!

All the Gas Giants have Ring Systems. Mars will have one in around 5 million years time.

Voyager I, 1980 - first hi-res close-up shots of Saturn: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voyager_1#Flyby_of_Saturn. Not sure how you can get a shot like that of Saturn from Earth, given that the rings (so I thought) are always edge-on to us. Maybe the OP is one of the lucky few with access to a telescope aboard a space probe? Read up on the Voyager programme with awe: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voyager_program (seriously - these ancient machines are *still* operating, just about, despite the incredibly hostile environment they're in, and the enormous time they've been going. Bow and and recite: "We are not worthy!" I jest, but my god! You have no idea how impressed I am.)

My 7th grade science teacher brought in his telescope and we looked at various planets. I remember staring at Saturn and being utterly mesmerized. I kept thinking "It's a million miles out there but it looks like you could just reach out and touch it." There was something so strange about seeing with my own eyes something I'd only seen in pictures.

How I miss seeing all the astronomical events now I'm in a brightly lit city. Unfortunately, my neighborhood is too sketchy at night to walk up to the bus stop to get out where it's darker. Just glad I got to see some dazzling wonders when I lived in areas without light.

Conservation photographer and writer Marisa Marulli tells Bored Panda that she got into nature photography after realizing that she didn't know what she wanted to do with her life.

"And that bothered me. I wanted a clear path, like the lawyers and the doctors. I didn’t want to ’stumble’ my way through life without answers! Thinking that way about it is funny now. I’m so glad I stumbled," she shared.

"I’m so glad I took a breather when I was so peeved in an office cubicle, not knowing what I wanted with my life, that I finally took a career and personality test and began to get some answers in some areas of work that might be of interest to me. Photography showed up as one of them, believe it or not."

Passion-vine Hopper (Scolypopa australis) are planthoppers that look like a cross between a cicada and a moth. The nickname for nymphs is fluffy bums. The are pretty pests that require Neem oil controlling methods. https://www.brisbaneinsects.com/brisbane_planthoppers/PassionVineHopper.htm Reminds me of the golden tortoise beetle or goldbugs that lived on my morning glories. Unlike planthoppers, goldbugs damage is confined to aesthetic appearance and doesn't hurt the plant.

Along with photography, the personality test presented her with about 20 other lines of work that she might like best, but after trying some of them, photography was the one that stuck with her.

"All of the forward motion into those few careers sort of stopped either due to my own disinterest or because I hit an exterior block. Photography stayed. In the beginning months of pursuing it, I took a photography workshop in Iceland. Now, this is an important piece of the story because I hadn’t been out of the country in over 10 years, and I was pretty scared of flying," she continued telling us.

"But the camera, the pursuit of photography of nature and animals in Iceland, weighed more than my fear. That was a victory. I found something I loved enough to jump over the fear of getting there. And it continues today, putting me in front of some of the largest bears in the wild, on the edge of cliffs when I am not a fan of ledges, even on multiple flights to get across the world to Siberia, and most recently, into the ocean to understand and explore the conservation of sea turtles."

Thanks for this...led me off on a search. This doesn't appear to be the cave dwelling "Zospeum tholussum." Size and shell are off. It's not a true albino, as the body has color. If the photo was taken in Europe it could be a Clear Glass Snail - "Aegopinella pura" or, more broadly, any of the "glass snails." And after entirely too long, the answer might be in Robert Cameron 2016. Slugs and Snails HarperCollins, apparently in Chapter 4. Or, WAG here, it could be a thermo regulation mechanism or, less likely, living in an environment without visual predators.

Whereas wildlife and landscape photographer Melissa Alves tells us that what led her to nature photography was her love for nature.

"I have loved nature for as long as I can remember. I used to watch nature documentaries with my dad and imagine being one of the presenters in the show. I didn’t come across a lot of representation for women in nature photography when I was growing up, so I didn’t consider it as much more than a hobby until much later in life," she shared.

"I also recall my dad telling me as a kid to enjoy the tigers I was seeing on TV because they probably wouldn't be around when I grew up, and that had quite an impression on me. Photography has the power to change people’s hearts, and if even just one person sees a photo I’ve taken and wants to take better care of the environment, I feel successful."

During her career, the most mind-blowing and once-in-a-lifetime pictures that Marisa was able to capture were a close-up of an adult bear in Alaska and sea turtles in the ocean and at the Loggerhead Marinelife Center.

"When I was staying at Silver Salmon Creek Lodge in Lake Clark National Park, Alaska, we went out to the wild to observe and photograph some of the largest bears in the world: the coastal brown bear (see here). At one point, a very large adult decided to walk our way. The bear continued and ended up walking right past us. It was absolutely amazing. It passed so close that I had too much of a telephoto (zoom) lens to capture it at one point!" she exclaims.

"When I was snorkeling and photographing in the ocean, I noticed there were a few jellyfish in the area. A young sea turtle approached one nearby me, and began eating it! I remember staying fairly still so I would not disrupt the sea turtle and sure enough it stayed long enough that its meal crumbs — little pieces of jellyfish — floated around and lightly stung me a bit!"

Meanwhile, the once-in-a-lifetime photo Melissa captured was of shorebirds perfectly flying in front of Mount Baker (which you can find here).

"In December of 2023, I photographed some shorebirds (too far away to properly identify) taking off as a group in front of Mount Baker. I have seen the shorebirds in the area fly in massive flocks before, but I had never seen them leave the bay to continue on their migration in such large numbers, and directly in front of the mountain," she says.

"It was incredible, and I still have yet to see them fly perfectly in front of the mountain like that again. Because of the distance between the bay where me and the birds were and Mount Baker it appeared as though the birds were flying high above the mountain at some points."

There was a drought back in the 90's and you can see the old town that was there, even a corduroy road.....the mountain now has a trail, but my friends used to scramble up and run down the mountain. I hate when people mis-use the word "explode". It seems so common now that I guess the meaning of the word is changing (for the worse). People talking about their shower doors "exploding" or their car window "exploding". It's just exaggerating for no need.

To be able to capture such amazing moments in images, Marisa says that light is the most crucial part. "It is all about the light, as much as possible. When capturing landscape photos, I aim to photograph during sunrise and sunset, when everything lights up in a special way than the rest of the day. For animal photography, natural light is important (and critical when it comes to an endangered species), as you do not want to disturb the animal. For night sky photography, lack of light pollution is super important," she explains.

For Melissa, her technique usually differs depending on what subject she tries to capture. "For example, when I photograph owls, I often use long-exposures, since the owls don’t tend to move much and it allows me to let a little more light in when I am already at a maximum aperture for my lens and do not want to bump up the ISO settings too much. For something like a macro shot of a mushroom, I take multiple images and stack them together in Photoshop later to get as much detail as possible."

Even after years of capturing breathtaking photos of our world, photographers say that nature never ceases to amaze them. "I can see the same trees and moss every day and still have more to learn about them," says Melissa. "Nature is always changing too, so there is definitely always a surprise waiting every time I go out."

"It manages to surprise me every time I am out with it," agrees Marisa. "That is the point, I think. When you love what you do (whether it’s your career or a hobby or on a vacation), you will be enlivened inside, open-minded with a childlike wonder, and see things that perhaps others do not. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

Went In For Teeth Cleaning Last Month & Mentioned A Numb Feeling In A Tooth- I Was Shocked To Find A Tumor Eating My Jaw Bone. This Photo Is My Ct Scan. Biopsy Surgery Results Were Non-Cancerous, Thankfully

3D dental scan of a jaw with missing teeth, showcasing an intriguing aspect of our world's complexity.

I had surgery last week to take a biopsy to rule out bone cancer. Results came back as a central large cell granuloma. Next step are more tests and a surgery to remove the tumor/lesion completely. Possibly bone transplant/stem cell procedure later to help regrow some bone and pretty sure those teeth will need help later down the line too. 15-20% chance this thing could come back, too.

Depends on the subspecies. The biggest get up to 175 lbs. Turkish livestock guardian dogs, bred to fight wolves, range from 140 to 180 lbs for a healthy adult male. And a healthy adult dairy cow can reach 1000 lbs.

They took a large wolf and a small husky. The largest subspecies of wolf are between 2.25 and 3 feet at the shoulder, and weigh 85-135 lb. A Husky is between 19 and 24 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 35 and 60 lb. So they put a three foot tall wolf with a 19 inch husky, and pretend that they are comparing an average wolf with an average husky. Also, when people in the USA envision a husky, they're actually envisioning a malamute, which a larger dog. Huskies are medium dog, at best.

Don't people EVER get tired of posting buIIsh!t that somebody made up because it sounded good? Maize was domesticated in Mexico lowlands, and this is a breed of corn that was bred by indigenous peoples to survive in the highlands of the southern Andes. It is likely a few thousand years old, but Maiez was domesticated thousands of years before this breed ever existed. Typical ignorant Reddit BS, by people who are too lazy to do even the most basic research, and are to stupid to run a fvcking Google search. The Reddit BS is then copied here by people who don't spend even a minute doing minimal verification.

Oh, and sweet corn was created by the Iroquois in the 18th century and it was possibly created to be sold to White people. Yes, the Iroquois understood how to breed maize to create cultivars with specific desired characteristics.

Here in the Desert Southwest, (SE New Mexico for me) our Jackrabbits are well-known scrappers. I've seen them fighting, and the screams and cries they make while whooping a*s are kind of freaky. Once, two of our boss's sons were out spotlighting Jackrabbits, and they had one Jackrabbit jump up into the truck(the door was open), and he tore hell out of the seat covers, their clothes, and them, then it chased both of them out of the truck! Their dad was pissed when they walked back to the house with no truck, and no guns!

Elephants are not very hairy creatures. But their tails certainly are an exception to this rule, with thick, coarse, black tail hairs that can reach a length of up to 100cm – all the better to scatter those flies. Research shows that the tail hairs of elephants are significantly different to their body hairs, and more like rhino horn or horse hoof keratins. In the case of albino calf, Khanyisa, her tail hairs, while growing steadily, lack any pigment and are the same light blondish hue of the fuzz that covers her trunk and chin. =)

from the background of the photos, it is very clearly not in a cage. there are necessary barriers between zookeepers and animals, and many, including gorillas, are trained to come up to the barrier and present themselves so that blood can be drawn, vaccines given, etc from a place of safety for both.

Like many other non-human animals, gorillas face many dangers from poachers (due to the lucrative trade in body parts believed to have magical properties), as well as environmental encroachment. Unfortunately, for many endangered populations like gorillas living in controlled environments under expert human protection (such as in nature preserves or in zoos) may be their best chance for survival.

It's trash. Specifically, it's an old net float. Problem is, these confuse animals and often end up getting broken with turtles, and marine mammals eating them then dying. So, you're saying you hope someone threw garbage back in the water, to potentially k**l animals.

Be glad it's a disk, and not Drum Memory. The FASTRAND drum storage device (Big honking metal drum coated with magnetic oxide spinning at ungodly speed - axis of rotation parallel to the floor; it was a steamroller - and with read-write heads around the surface) was described as 'a device for storing angular momentum. Momentum storage was slightly reduced if the optional data read-write mechanism was installed, due to the braking effect of the heads'. They were only *slightly* joking. Back in those days, the data storage density was quite low, so the drum had to be humongous to be useful. As a drum, the mass was concentrated on the rim. There are documented cases of mounting bearings failing and the drum taking off like a juggernaut and crashing through walls.

Being picky: those are just the discs. The actual drives they were used in were a lot bigger - and in use, they were protected from the outside air one way or another. Not that I ever met any such - I'm also from the 1960s. They seem to be displayed in front of hard disc drives meant to use similar discs, only I've ever only seen such things loaded with disc stacks (in photos) - memory says they were always enclosed somehow.

Hyperextension. While it can be a result of pointe dancing, not all dancers have this extreme of an arch, and it's not necessarily good in the long run for the dancers, as it comes with a lot of health problems later. A nice line, with alignment, is all that's needed.

I didn’t take dance classes until I was an undergrad. I couldn’t follow choreography at all and it took me \~3 years before it clicked. I took Modern then ballet because I needed the vocabulary and muscle knowledge. I used dance, especially ballet for strength and stamina and could ski like a telemark goddess because of it. It wasn’t my goal to perform or go on pointe yet I knew someone who thought she could go on pointe during her 40s. Guess how that worked out? Major injuries to her back and ankles but she persisted anyway. I guarantee I derived more pleasure from ballet than she did, and I still dance, but she can’t. I’m really flexible, too, but I have terrible turnout, which means there are some things that are so far impossible for me to do in figure skating. I guess my point is that some people are willing to destroy their body and some aren’t.

Dad (RIP) was a music critic (SF Chronicle) and took me to Balanchine when I was little - maybe 5 or 6. He pointed out the hyperextended feet of the dancers and told me that George Balanchine chose them and then trained them that way - the way he said it was more a condemnation than a compliment.

Very fragmented.. reminds me when I was really struggling with severe depression.. going out to sunny days looked almost like this.. but it hurt. Daylight hurt my eyes, sounds were unbearable and the feeling of running water on my skin felt like burning acid regardless the water temperature. I'm not sure if I got better.. or just got used to it. Now open spaces, specially full of people are really uncomfortable and draining. I wish I just could stay at home all day long and never having to go outside again

I’m so, so, sorry. I hope you won’t be offended if I mention what came to mind that might help. Have you tried sunglasses? I don’t know if there are specific types that are better for depression or if any high-quality lenses might work. I get migraines on cloudy days, but sunglasses help. My son sometimes wears headphones around his neck in case He needs to escape sound. My partner bought Beats headphones that I use more than him, and they are very comfortable. I use cloth covers because I sweat a lot so they’re even better. The heightened feeling on your skin sounds like what some people experience with fibromyalgia. People with fibromyalgia are often depressed. Go figure. I’ve known some people who do dry brushing to desensitize themselves enough that they can tolerate having anything touch them. Can you explore open spaces when they’re empty?

That's what it's there for. Such shards are called cullet and many industries do it to strengthen a new batch.

I'm the only one freaked out by this? It makes me so uncomfortable, it must feel so strange. I keep imagining them getting tangled up or caught on things. I hate anything to do with eyes, it always freaks me out.

That is not the typical inside of a bowling ball, it's lacking the core for some reason. The inside usually has a weightstock in the middle, encased inside either a symmetrical or asymmetrical core, depending on what the bowler wants the ball to be able to do.

That is a regular ball, my dad had a clear (blue) ball with a (white) cube suspended inside and very heavy. While currently that's no big deal BUT back in the 60s it was huge. I've never seen a similar one.
