Load More Replies...That is a mourning dove! They are called that because their 'coo' noise sounds sad
For years I thought it was morning dove, not mourning dove.
Load More Replies...Awww. So cute. But how long was the wreath up? ;). Mourning doves don't start hatching in Spring. This is definitely something that would happen to me. And at that point you can't take it down so might as well stay there until next Christmas!
Probably an Oz contributor. Christmas comes 3 days into summer there.
Load More Replies...Mourning Dove! One of my favorite birds. They’re so pretty.
The other day birds made a nest in my dads car bonnet…they all survived tho! 😀
This used to happen all of the time at my parents house!! Five different birds and three times they got inside!!
That happened a couple years ago in the front door of my building. WHY they would build a nest in something that is constantly moving (and constantly approached by people) is beyond me. We had to put up a giant sign on the door to make sure everyone disturbed the nest as little as possible.
Awe! This happened in the spring at a friends house! They posted signs to have deliveries and guests come to the side entrance by their kitchen so as not to disturb the birds. The following year that pair returned and another pair took over her next door neighbors front door decor. Everyone was very protective and didn't disturb them and let nature do it's thing. My girlfriend's hubby took photos periodically and shared them.
A mourning dove did that in a plant on our table outside. It was in a wide open area, so I went to the dollar store and bought an umbrella. Opened it, then sawed the handle down. Secured it so she and her hatchlings would be out of any wind and rain. Doves are amazing.
You now have bird poop all over your door. Who knows, it might be lucky.
I had this happen to me one year. Two years ago a robin started to build a nest on my hose which is hanging on the house. I kept taking down the moss and long threads of grass. She kept building. II finally threw the whole thing away. Last year a robin tried to make a nest between the top of a lamp on the house and the house itself. I finally had to fit a paper towel roll (with some unrolled) on top of the lamp. THIS YEAR, before I knew what was happening a robin has built a nest on my front porch on top of the lamp and the house itself. (Must be the same robin from last year. Same design). I only saw it too late and my front porch has mud and long threads of grass. I think there are babies in the nest now.
I think this has happened to most folks. especially if, like me, you leave it up year round.
