I knew a dog who was so utterly dedicated to ripping the squeaker out of dog toys, that humans would buy him squeaky toys just for the pleasure of watching them being cheerfully disemboweled! That was a great dog.

For 10 years, the r/mildlyinteresting subreddit has just kept growing and growing into one of the biggest communities on Reddit. The moderators describe the page as being for “Mildly interesting stuff. Stuff that interests you. Mildly. It's in the name.” So in other words, it's not the most jaw-dropping or extraordinary stuff, but it's definitely not boring.

In a previous article one of the moderators, Cowbeller1, told Bored Panda that the most popular posts in the sub have something to do with luck: "Maybe you come across something interesting in your day-to-day life and remember to take a picture, maybe you're just lucky enough that something is interesting to the community. No real rhyme or reason aside from that," the mod explained.

Another moderator called RedSquaree said that original photos and titles are a key part of this online group. Their content is generated by the community and given that titles cannot be clickbait, there is a unique feeling of people seeing something mildly interesting and posting it.

But what if you are so distracted that you don’t see the odd-looking things around you? Constant interruptions from our devices that keep buzzing every few minutes is just one thing that makes it hard to focus. And even when we’re able to concentrate on one particular thing, we might still miss other important details.

An experiment at Harvard University called "The Invisible Gorilla” showed a video where six people pass basketballs around. While you watch, you have to count how many passes people in white shirts make. At one point, a gorilla comes into the picture and leaves, spending nine seconds on screen.

It's hard to believe, but half of the viewers did not see the gorilla at all. They were so focused on one single act, the passes, that they didn't notice what’s entering their visual field. "This experiment reveals two things: that we are missing a lot of what goes on around us, and that we have no idea that we are missing so much,“ the creators of this study explained.

Tipping is not as important here as it is in the US, but when we had a guys-only table, no matter who served them the whole night, we'd send our cutest waitress over when it came to paying the bill. It did work out almost every time. So yeah, indeed, tipping IS sexist.

Also, it turns out that if you don't catch new information coming into your eye range within 1.5 seconds, you are unlikely to see it at all. Experimental psychologists Katherine Wood and Daniel Simons performed similar tests to the Gorilla experiment, they asked people to follow black and white shapes moving across the computer. “The most natural thing to assume is that the longer it’s there, the more opportunity you have to notice it, so we were quite surprised when it turned out that it seems not to help you very much,” says Wood.

However, sometimes we're not doing anything at all and still feel distracted. It’s not uncommon that your thoughts start to cruise when you should be focused. For the study, they created an app that contacts participants during their waking hours and asks them different questions. Researchers analyzed samples from 2250 adults and concluded that we spend almost 47 percent of our day "mind wandering," regardless of what we are doing. Also, psychologists found out that in their research, a drifting mind was generally the cause and not merely the consequence of unhappiness. As they put in their conclusion, “a human mind is a wandering mind, and a wandering mind is an unhappy mind”.

Honestly how does anyone decide to have children in US? I'm asking because honestly i cannot imagine how this cost is paid especially when you already have a student loan for example! I'm wondering how big the demographic problem is in the US

People in the US are basically bullied into it by society. I can't tell you how many times I've been called "selfish" or "trash" because I don't want kids. There is still a very large population that believes it's a woman's duty to breed, and they brainwash their children to believe that. Schools don't teach proper sex ed, especially in certain districts where there isn't a lot of money to put in the schools, and it's harder for some people to access birth control. Birth control is also expensive, even with health insurance. I think when I was on the pill it was $30 a month. That's a lot when minimum wage is only $8 an hour and rent is $1200 for a one bedroom apartment (your mileage may vary). And all the people who say "just don't have sex" are probably very lonely, isolated people. You're punished if you have sex, and you're miserable if you don't have sex. It's the American Way (tm).

I had a preemie baby in 2002 six weeks after my husband got his first real job with health insurance. The hospital bill for the birth, my two day stay and my baby's 21 day NICU stay was over $100K. With the insurance we only had to pay the copay for the baby and I, $250. We were so lucky to have that job and benefits

A visit to hospital for anything in the U.S and you would be paying hundreds of thousands of dollars 😑 I went in not too long ago, spent two hours hooked up to an IV for fluids, and they sent me on my way. Three weeks later I received the bill. My insurance covered 30% and I stil ended up with a $3,000 bill. I'm a single mom and will be paying then $25 a month for a very long time. The healthcare system is wrecked, it's all about putting money in the pockets of big pharma.

In the US, if you or your spouse work for a big company, insurance probably pays most of it. If you are really really poor, Medicaid usually pays for it. Everyone else, it depends on whether you can even get insurance and whether that insurance covers maternity, which is a big if.

Looks like a little trick. If you have health insurance, does the price tend to be about 10x lower? It also becomes more expensive if the expectant mother has been able to carefully avoid seeing a doctor and midwife during her pregnancy.

From the original Reddit post, top comment by u/t_bythesea: "Sorry, she may have thought that's what happened, but it's not. In machine cut glassware (especially if the glass is really thin) this is something that happens occasionally. There is a flaw in the glass that runs around the circumference and often not visible to the eye. Under pressure or extreme hot or cold water it can shear all the way around. while I'm sure her engagement ring is lovely. It would never cut glass like this. In 26 years of selling glassware of all styles, price ranges and quality, I've seen thousands of breaks like this."
