“The Veiled Lady” By Raffaele Monti 1860

“The Veiled Lady” By Raffaele Monti 1860

I can’t even begin to wrap my head around the skill that was required to execute this marble masterpiece. To create the illusion of transparency with the veil in this medium is unbelievable. Metropolitan Museum of Art.

It was a style that was very popular among sculptors in the XVIII and XIX century. The early master was Giuseppe Sammartino, whose work in Naples basically started the trend. Later, the swiss Vincenzo Vela and the Italian Raffaele Monti (who were good friends and studied together) became masters of this style.

When I look at these statues in the age of lasers and computers, I think that's cool but not that hard nowadays. Then remember these statues are at least 100 years old and they used chisels and hammers. Absolutely amazing

I've thought the same. This one particularly but even some of the "lesser" great works. Saw some in person in places like the Vatican and it boggles my mind that someone sees a huge boulder / chunk of marble in the dirt and then turns it into something like this.

Raffaele Monti's level of expertise is exquisite and mind-blowing - he convincingly transformed marble to look like the texture of a light, sheer fabric

The Largest Intact Mosaic. Antakya Turkey. Sixth Century

The Largest Intact Mosaic. Antakya Turkey. Sixth Century

Spanning over 1200 sq meters and made up of geometric shapes and non-repeating figures. Was probably created as a public space at the time. One of the most fascinating aspects of this mosaic is curved rug like surface which grew curved as a result of earthquakes in 526 and 528 AD. Despite the earthquakes the mosaic never broke and survived to the present date intact and unbroken. It took 9 years to unearth.

As a tilesetter I’ve seen floors in houses come up after a year due to shoddy construction. The longevity of this mosaic being intact after so much movement is mind blowing and a testament to the craftsmanship.

I am sure here, at Bored Panda, there is no need to argue that art is essential. So I would like to take this post as an opportunity to remind us all why that is. First and foremost, it is a powerful means of self-expression. Through art, in any shape or form, anyone can convey their thoughts and emotions. Sometimes it is too difficult to express what you feel in a logical sense, and that is where poetry, drawing, or even sculpting comes in to help. The same goes for the receiver, who is observing the artwork; you can start feeling something you have never felt before. That can be a very powerful and enriching experience.

A Tree Saved By A Tree

A Tree Saved By A Tree

When branches or roots from different trees are in prolonged intimate contact, they often abrade each other exposing their inner tissues, which may eventually fuse. This process is called inosculation, a natural phenomenon in which trunks, branches or roots of two trees grow together. It is biologically similar to grafting. Such trees are referred to in forestry as gemels, from the Latin word meaning “a pair”.

I visited a cemetery in CT (US). It was really old and had some of the most beautiful statuary I've even seen. My favorite was above ground and had an angel draped over the tomb, very similar to this. His (her?) head was down, the arms outstretched, the wings were wilted and it just exuded abject sorrow. It literally brought tears to my eyes.

That leads us to communication. From feelings to cultural, historical, or societal experiences, art transcends language barriers and can communicate complex ideas and narratives very effectively. Historical and cultural art serves as a record of history, capturing the essence of different periods and societies and teaching us about the past. Art allows our future generations to learn from the past.

As long as they do it right. Two things to think of, how slippery the tiles are compared to the street and whether they're the same height as the surrounding asphalt. If you get it wrong they're a slip/trip hazard.

Obviously, in most cases, art goes hand in hand with aesthetic appreciation and finding beauty in the world. That can even raise the question of why some things are beautiful while others are not as pleasing to the eye. By evoking philosophical and critical thinking, art has the power to challenge societal norms, question authority, and provoke change.

This was made during the Belle Époque period of art, which was the precursor to art nouveau. Bats, insects (especially dragonflies), and snakes were among the decorative motifs drawn from the natural world. The jewelry from the Belle Époque is stunning. It's one of my favorite periods in the history of decorative art.

And lastly, art helps us to self-reflect. If we analyze why we like specific art, may it be music or anything at all, it can teach us a lot about ourselves and at what stage of life we are as individuals. So, yeah, I think art is pretty important, and as the old saying goes, earth without art is just ‘eh’.

1400 Year Old Ginkgo Tree Located In Xi’an China That Draws Thousands Of People Each Year From All Over China

1400 Year Old Ginkgo Tree Located In Xi’an China That Draws Thousands Of People Each Year From All Over China

The golden leaves start falling around mid November, turning the temples ground into a yellow ocean. This particular tree grows next to the Gu Guanyin Buddhist temple in the Zhongnan Mountains. The ginkgo tree, also known as the maidenhair, is sometimes referred to as a living fossil because despite all the climate changes, it remains unchanged for 200 million years. It’s a living link to the times dinosaurs ruled the planet.

only female ginko trees produce these seeds that smeel of butanoic acid. But botanists to this day are unable to determine whether a ginko sapling is a male or female plant until several decades in when they start to grow these seeds. That's the reason why they despite of their resiliance aren't used as street trees.

I did landscaping work for an elderly gentleman who planted a ginkgo tree in his parkway decades before. He had been ASSURED by the nursery that he bought it from that it was a male tree, but it definitely was not. One of my tasks was to clean up all the disgusting fallen fruit.

I have several Ginkgo trees and bought all males - no fruit - no stink. You cannot even buy a female Ginkgo out here anymore. The were 2 females outside the steps of my elementary school. The stink of so many fruits squished by kids pervaded the entrance.

They have formed a crust around the skylight likely due to a loss of heat around the area. What’s a Lava skylight? Molten lava can flow through underground channels called lava tubes. These tubes become visible when part of the roof collapse, causing a lava skylight.

Like A Herd Of Cattle Or A Flock Of Geese Or A Pack Of Wolves, A Swarm Of Ladybugs Are Referred To As A “Loveliness”

In the Middle Ages after farmers found out that ladybugs helped wipe out swarms of aphids that were destroying their crops, they thanked the Virgin Mary and referred to them as the “beetle of our lady”. This was eventually shortened to “lady beetle” then to “ladybug” which stuck. In the UK they are referred to as “ladybirds”.

In French they're "bête a Bon Dieu" ( Good Lord's beast) as well as their more mundane name of "coccinelle". But as à swarm they ARE somewhat scary. Doesn't happen often, though.

Old story: At ~5yo I learned how to clean my eraser's edges, but the dirty flat sides bothered me. Got the blade out of a Gillette shaver & went to work. Blade slipped & sliced through the base of my index finger. Oodles of blood. I wrapped the blanket I was sitting on tight & squeezed. After a few tries the bleeding stopped & I went to wash & get a bandaid. Yes, few things fazed me, even as a kid. Mom found the bed looking like a crime scene & screamed. I ran back & she wouldn't believe it was just my finger (very sharp blade & wound was almost invisible), pulled on it & more blood gushed out. More screams. I rolled my eyes & started over. Could have used a stitch or 2, but it was OK. Mom never forgave me.

The piggy bank’s origin began in the Middle Ages, when pots and other containers, including those used to hold money, were usually forged from an orange-colored clay material called pygg. Over time, money jars became known as “pygg pots.” Then, when the English language evolved to “pygg” being pronounced as “pig,” a play on words was born. In the 19th century, people began requesting that English potters make their money jars into pig shapes—and thus, the modern piggy bank was born.

"Hotter than the sun" usually refers to the SURFACE of the sun. Deeper in, the sun is some million degrees hot. Unmatched by any chemical reaction, we need to go deeper in here...

Actually a cup of sun core is not hotter than a lizard (square cube law / stefan-boltzmann). It is due to it's extreme size the sun gets so hot. If you packed together 6,000,000,000,000,000 lizards you'd get the same power output.

Over the years, several trees on the family farm were struck by lightning. Some had minimal damage, whereas others exploded sending branches and wood shrapnel in all directions.

We saw the same on ours. One tree exploded with so much force it drove splinters into other trees 50 yards away. A couple others "just" had a scar where it blew a strip of bark off that traced the path of the lightning to the ground.

This Streamlined Dymaxion Car Was Designed By The American Inventor Buckminster Fuller During The Great Depression And Was Featured Prominently At The Chicago Worlds Fair In 1933-1934

Little known fact: The Dymaxion was heavily inspired by the ALFA "Aerodinamica", a special chassis built by coachmaker Castagna on the chassis of a Alfa 40-60 HP (a racing model) in 1914 for the Count Marco Ricotti of Milan. The shape -the very first instance of the "Droplet" aerodynamic concept in cars- was inspired by dirigibles, and it was built by hand by skilled metalworkers. At tests, it reached 139 km/h, 10 km/h more than the standard model in racing setup. The car is at the Alfa Romeo museum. https://www.museoalfaromeo.com/en-us/collezione/Pages/A-L-F-A--4060-HP-Aerodinamica.aspx

Dunmore Pineapple House. Built In 1761 In Sterlingshire Scotland By The Earl John Murray For His Wife Charolettte

Attributed to the architect Sir William Chambers. It is considered one of the most bizarre buildings in the country. Pineapples were first brought to Europe by Christopher Columbus from the Caribbean island of Guadalupe in 1493. Pineapples became a rare delicacy in Europe with associations of power, wealth and hospitality. The pineapple structure is 46 ft high and constitutes a stunning example of the stonemason’s craft, being a remarkable depiction of the fruit. The pineapple became a universal symbol of welcome and hospitality.

    Delivery For Bugs Bunny

    Delivery For Bugs Bunny

Before the 16th-17th century almost all cultivated carrots were purple with mutated versions in yellow and white. Orange carrots are believed to have been cultivated by Dutch growers who took mutant strains of the purple carrot and developed them into the modern day orange variety. The Dutch are also credited with selling the seeds to the British who then brought them to early America. Orange carrots get their bright orange color from beta-carotene. The origins of the cultivated carrot is rooted in the purple carrot in the region around modern day Afghanistan.

19 Year Old German Actress Brigette Helm On The Set Of Metropolis In 1927

The costume was made of what was referred to as a new form of malleable “plastic wood”. The costume was extremely uncomfortable and sitting in it was difficult. At the time it was the most expensive movie ever made which at the time was aprox $1.2 million dollars. Brigette complained about the many retakes Fritz Lang was known to request saying “no one will even know it me in the costume”. To which he replied. “I’ll know”

Slope Point Is The Southern Most Point Of New Zealand’s South Island

Slope Point Is The Southern Most Point Of New Zealand’s South Island

The wind is so intense and relentless that the trees are bent, warped and twisted forever along the direction the wind blows. That is because the region is constantly being hit with fierce cold winds that blow up from Antarctica. Slope Point is predominantly used for sheep farming. Aside from a few sheep, no humans or other animals live on that part of the island. In photos 2 and 3 you can see abandoned shacks that built under the protection of the windswept trees. But even those could not stand up to the wind.

Researchers Believe This To Be One Of The Oldest Prosthetic Devices

A 3000 year old wooden toe prosthetic discovered on an Egyptian mummy. The wooden toe was refitted several times. Based on the meticulous construction of this ancient prosthetic. It was determined that the wearer, a priest’s daughter wanted the toe to look natural and be as comfortable as possible.

Affectionately named Bruce on Martha’s Vineyard in 1974. Interestingly the shark in Pixar’s “Finding Nemo” name is Bruce. Another fun fact someone just added in the comments. Seems Spielberg named the shark after his lawyer Bruce. Hence the joke: Why don’t sharks eat lawyers: Professional courtesy.

Bruce was unreliable, it failed more than it worked. Spielburg had to work around the failures and that meant filming sections with little or no shark appearing in shot. The total time for Bruce in shot is 4 minutes, less than 3% of the film. It doesn’t put in an appearance until 1hr 21mins into the film because it wasn’t working properly until that point of the shooting, they’d rewritten the whole film to accommodate the lack of shark. Bonus useless fact, the line ‘you’re gonna need a bigger boat’ was not written for the film, it was a improvised moment by Roy Scheider. I have many more useless facts in Jaws, it’s one of my favourite films and it’s a great book too.

It's also possible that someone replaced the front tire somewhere along the line to preserve the aesthetics. On my way home from work sits the remains of a Model T Ford which smashed into something probably 80 years ago. It is very near to the road and at some point the property owners installed a reproduction chrome radiator surround and headlight bezels on it and put their house numbers in the middle of the grille. Sometimes things just go from being trash into being local landmarks.

Look at that lovely shade of red. And the brown/yellow patch looks almost like rings of a tree trunk. The greenish patch at the top looks like hills seen from an airplane. There's beauty, if one just looks at things with a different perspective.

    Dead Man’s Finger Mushrooms

    Dead Man’s Finger Mushrooms

(Xylaria polymorpha) are a saprobic fungus. Common inhabitant of forests and woodland areas, usually growing from the base of rotting trees or decaying wood. They are fairly common in the UK, Ireland, mainland Europe and parts of North America. The entire mushroom is poisonous. Containing oenanthotoxin. A highly unsaturated higher alcohol and powerful convulsant. Not surprising by the look of these.

    Tipi Sultans Mechanical Tiger

    Tipi Sultans Mechanical Tiger

It represents a tiger attacking a British soldier. This large almost life size wooden automatron represents his hostilities to the British rule. It’s life size creation of a tiger digging his teeth into the neck of a man in European clothing. There is a crank protruding from the side of the tiger that causes the man’s arms to go up and down. While a set of bellows inside the tiger to growl and the man to emit distressing cries of agony. A flap on the tigers side can be opened to reveal a small organ that can emit 18 notes. Circa 1792. Fermentation causes heat. They were rotting already most likely, but the heat comes from the inside. They slip out the bottom after becoming goo, then additional ice starts to form around the empty "mold" of the apple.

In his quote that many of us collectors can relate to but on a smaller scale. “At first I thought a few stones of each different shape would be enough and then I understood that in their thousands they give a sense of community. A Brown Velvet Hat That Belonged To A Street Dentist Or Traveling Tooth Puller In London In The 1820’s-1850’s

It is decorated with 88 decayed human teeth from former patients, each drilled with a hole and attached with twine. In the days before anesthesia, this cap was meant to reassure potential clients that the dentist had magician like skills and could remove a rotten tooth without pain or infection. The procedure was anything but painless and infections were quite common. I’m not sure how reassuring it was to be looking up at the fellow wearing this trophy/ adverting cap with a pair of primitive pliers descending into your mouth. Anesthesia was introduced in 1844 by a dentist, Horace Wells who had his own third molar removed after inhaling nitrous oxide. It wasn’t until 1846 that Oliver Wendell Holms the famous Supreme Court justice first suggested the term anesthesia to describe the state produced by ether. X-Ray Of A Cat Sarcophagus With A Cat Mummy Inside Found In Egypt

Mummified animals have been found in underground catacombs across Egypt including cats, birds, dogs, snakes, rodents and crocodiles. Animals played a huge role in Egyptian culture. The mummified animals were considered sacred gifts and were used as offerings. Sometimes they were buried with their owners, or as a food supply for the afterlife. But the most common animal mummies were offerings brought to temples to present to the gods.

I'm not so sure they needed to "farm" them-- cats produce plenty of kittens all on their own. Unfortunately, they didn't have a better way to control the population (spaying/neutering), so they came up with a solution that still honoured the cats and didn't anger the Gods. They might have even believed that the cats produced so many kittens for that express purpose.

One Of The “Kodra Houses” Or Talking Houses In The Town Of Civita Italy

A sort of homage to the Albanian painter Ibrahim Koda. These are very small houses with windows and chimneys resembling faces.

I'd like to see this. I see faces in a great many buildings. Windows are the eyes to the soul.

During The Early 1920’s In Germany, Avant-Garde Couple Lavinia Schultz And Her Husband Walter Holdt Created And Performed Expressionist Dances In Abstract Costumes

During The Early 1920’s In Germany, Avant-Garde Couple Lavinia Schultz And Her Husband Walter Holdt Created And Performed Expressionist Dances In Abstract Costumes

Considered at the time an accessible form of expression for women, dance had fast become a component in their repertoire for modern living. In a style build on varying intensities of creeping, stamping, squatting, crouching, kneeling, arching, striding, lunging and leaping in mostly diagonally spiraling patterns. These fantastical costumes transformed the dancers into hybrid artwork. Somewhat like Nick Cave has done today. Lavinia’s seriousness and intensity was well documented. She was the duos leader. She directed the costume making choreography of the dances. 6 months after the black and white photos were taken in 1924, she shot her husband and then killed herself. The costumes survived and at the Hamburg Museum of Arts and Crafts.

Very unique! I like it. It would be an interesting decoration for a barn or tack room, hung up on the wall!

The Art Of Artist Nick Cave

The Art Of Artist Nick Cave

He is best known for his Soundsuits. A series of costumes that completely cover the individuals body, that camouflage the wearer’s shape. Enveloping and creating a second skin that hides gender, race and class, Compelling the audience to watch without judgement. He first started making them in 1992. He usually makes the Soundsuits out of sisal, dyed human hair, beads, buttons, wire, feathers, sequins and everyday objects. He uses these everyday objects to construct an atmosphere of familiarity with the rearrangement of the items into understandable representations of both material and social culture. The pillars of his work are mostly race, gender and identity. His work has been recreated in mosaic murals in the subway system at 42nd and 43rd streets in Manhattan.

This is work from the American sculptor Nick Cave, not to be confused with the singer, writer, musician Nick Cave from Australia.

Nick Cave is an underrated artist. His obsessions of sex, death and religion play out in his book, and music. His music is beautiful. Rather like Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan, he writes poetry that is set to music. Fascinating human being.

Very Rare Vintage Photo Of A Prohibition Era Illegal Baby Juggling Competition In 1929

Very Rare Vintage Photo Of A Prohibition Era Illegal Baby Juggling Competition In 1929

During the Great Depression, those looking for cheap and shady distractions found it in this, least spoken about and most secretive world of underground baby juggling. Women in dire straits and desperate for money would compete in dimly lit dusty back room bars and shanties across the country. Of course there was rabbit juggling and alligator juggling , but none had the compelling draw like baby juggling. Struggling mother’s from nearby towns and villages would often sneak their children in under their coats or baskets to be juggled for a meager portion of the prize money. Women would compete to see who could juggle the most babies and for the longest time and bets were made. Records were sketchy at best because this activity was frowned upon by the majority of well heeled society. Men were not allowed to participate because it was proven that only women had the right maternal instincts which gave them a better feel for the babies rotations when juggling. Written records and accounts of the events were few and far between. but according to leading expert and historian on the subject, Louis R. Diaperina in his book “The Dark Art of Baby Juggling” claims that the record is said to have been 7 babies for 38 seconds set by Edith Dumas a poor young out of work seamstress in Port Edna Georgia in 1931. Eventually these sinister Baby Juggling” rings were shut down and made illegal by a joint act of congress with the “Baby Protection Act” in May of 1931. George Santos, newly elected congressman from NY claimed his mother was a baby juggler.

It IS photoshopped art and the description is bulls*it. There is no records of a “Baby Protection Act” from May of 1931. The George Santos cited here was born in 1988, way too late for her mother to even be born before 1931. No records for the name of the author nor for the book (DIAPERina? Seriously?). No other occurrences of this story out of this post and its source. High and uneven compression of the image does not hide the artifacts from image manipulation. C'mon, don't be so gullible guys.

If they hadn't included the description I'd definitely think it was a type of photoshopped art. Babies, especially the age these look, are kinda heavy. That's no easy feat! Also how do the babies stay in the "seated" position?

Absolutely Impossible, those things weigh too much to be juggled like that. The force needed to launch one into the air would mean she’d have to kick it so hard it would be flailing about in distress, not floating with a smile. Probably also be bleeding and crying if kicked about with those hard leather soled shoes, or any shoes, or even just bare feet. This is a joke.
