It's easy to think of famous people as somehow immortal, but beneath the fame and the glamour, they're just as human as the rest of us. They might live in a different world than most, but they all go to the same place as everybody else when the time comes. In homage to these music, film, and sports icons, Bored Panda has compiled this list of the famous last photos taken of many of the most beloved people who have ever lived. Including the infamous 27 club members - a "club" of musicians and actors who all have died aged 27. Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, and Amy Winehouse are just a couple of them. Since there's no scientific proof of increased death risk when reaching 27, it seems almost like some black magic.

From Hollywood actors and rock stars to ex-presidents and sporting heroes, these last photos of celebrities below serve to remind us that life is short and death is inevitable, so make the most of it while you can. And though most of these people's legacies will carry on for decades, no one is safe from being forgotten.

Scroll through our list of last celebrity photos below.

    Freddie Mercury, 45, 1946-1991

Photography of Freddie Mercury standing in the yard

This is one of the last photos of the lead singer of Queen, taken in 1991. Until the very end, Freddie denied rumours about having AIDS, preferring to avoid the inevitable media circus and concentrate on his career as best he could. The day before his death he released the following statement : "Following the enormous conjecture in the press over the last two weeks, I wish to confirm that I have been tested HIV positive and have AIDS. I felt it correct to keep this information private to date to protect the privacy of those around me. However, the time has come now for my friends and fans around the world to know the truth and I hope that everyone will join with me, my doctors and all those worldwide in the fight against this terrible disease. My privacy has always been very special to me and I am famous for my lack of interviews. Please understand this policy will continue." Less than 24 hours later he died from bronchopneumonia, that was brought on by having AIDS. (Source: Ultimate Classic Rock)

The Fiscer was a great woman, who in her life had to fight, once again, with the terrible thing that is depression. many are those who suffer from this devious and creeping evil, and who, I do not know for what kind of mechanism, refuse medical treatment preferring to give themselves to alcohol and drugs to alleviate the sense of suffering and rejection that is felt. unfortunately this form of slow suicide, even if at a certain moment you manage to get out of addiction, leave difficult to avoid damages, and the heart of this brave woman has surrendered, but she will remain forever present in our hearts, and for me the Princess Leila will never die.

    Nikola Tesla, 86, 1856 - 1943

Black and white photography of Nikola Tesla

This is the last known photo of Nicola Tesla. On 7th January 1943, Tesla died alone in the New Yorker Hotel. The inventor, physicist, and futurist was best known for his contributions to the design of the modern alternating current (AC) electricity supply system. By the end of his brilliant and tortured life, he was penniless and had become a vegetarian living on only milk, bread, honey, and vegetable juices. Tesla spent days in a park surrounded by the creatures that mattered most to him—pigeons—and his sleepless nights working over mathematical equations and scientific problems in his head. David Bowie, 69, 1947-2016

    Photography of David Bowie

The December 7th 2015 premiere of his musical, 'Lazarus,' at the Theatre Workshop in New York would turn out to be David Bowie's final public appearance. Bowie had been battling liver cancer for over a year, and by this late stage was aware that it was terminal. His final album 'Blackstar' was full of references to death and he had appeared to have accepted and come to terms with his own mortality, with a humour and grace that many of us can only hope to emulate. Chester Bennington, 41, 1976-2017

    Photography of Chester Bennington

This photo of a smiling and seemingly happy Chester Bennington was taken just days prior to his passing. On July 20, 2017, Bennington was found dead at his home in California, having committed suicide by hanging. Bennington had always been open about his struggles with addiction and depression, but those close to him were shocked by his suicide. The day after Cornell's memorial, Bennington tweeted that he was "feeling very creative" and had written six new songs. Around the same time, he told a friend, Rene Mata, "We have to stick together, and we have so much to live for." Bennington was just 41 years old at the time of his death.  (Source: Rolling Stone)

This picture shows the nature of depressions so well! You can be (act as) the happiest person, when your around others, but in reality you are held captive, with the strongest chains, in a very dark place, deep inside of yourself. No-one can break these chains for you to get out of there....

It's not necessarily that he just gave into the suicidal thoughts, but rather depression is a weight on someone's life. As the years go by, the weight gets heavier and heavier and the thing is, you never know when someone says to themselves, "I can't take it anymore." The sad thing is, people will help you when you're at the edge of the cliff about ready to jump off, but otherwise you are on your own. Welcome to our Earth, where being independent and "powerful," is encouraged, and being weak and sensitive is looked down upon.

My mom took hers when I was 16. World can break you down & leaves a lot of heartache! It's incredibly sad and it's always too soon, but it leaves a peaceful feeling knowing they're not suffering anymore. I've always respected her choice, she had a rough life.

    Jimi Hendrix, 27, 1942-1970

Photography of Jimi Hendrix with his guitar

This photo of Jimi Hendrix with his favourite guitar 'Black Betty' was taken on September 17th, 1970, by his girlfriend Monika Danneman in the garden behind her apartment. Hendrix died the next day from a barbiturate-related asphyxia in London. He is said to have choked on his own vomit after taking a mixture of drugs, including a large dose of sleeping pills. There is no indication to suggest that Hendrix's death was a suicide, despite media speculation that it was. (Source: Wikipedia.org)

Hendrix took over the counter sleeping pills called ‘’chalkiest’ which were known to make a person puke. He wasn’t using heroin. He was using the over the counter sleep aide as an alternative to heroin. My neighbor was the lead singer of the girl group ‘’Cake’’ ..she and a photographer were the last ones to see him alive. But now there is new info stating Jimi was soaked in wine…it was in his lungs too. As if someone had poured it on him drowning him purposely.

    Christopher Mccandless, 24, 1968-1992

    Photography of Christopher Mccandless

This photo of Christopher McCandless was found in his undeveloped camera, having ventured into the Alaskan wilderness in solitude. He died of starvation in August 1992, after he had set out along an old mining road known as the Stampede Trail with minimal supplies, hoping to live simply off the land. His story would later be told in the book and then movie, Into the Wild. (Source: Wikipedia.org)

It's sad that he died and I also find his story fascinating, but he should have thought better and prepared better. Let's be honest. If someone's goal is suicide (which I do not advocate) then I get it. But if his intention was to continue living his life then he should have gone about it better. Nature is beautiful, but it also can be harsh. You can't play with nature.

honestly, if you go away on your own without a chance to contact civilization, in the middle of a forest and then something happens to you, you really wanted it. I do not feel very sorry for those who voluntarily put themselves in danger for the thrill of adventure. not that we should not go to the limit, but with a safety harness it would be better, otherwise it is life.

I work with cancer and transplant patients every day, and I can assure you that you are most correct. Catastrophic illness doesn't care what your skin color is, what you do for a living, what your bank account holds. It is truly a great and terrible equalizer. I have seen people who have been financially devastated live while people who had more money than they knew what to do with die. I have seen very wealthy patients and very poor patients alike both surrounded by family and totally alone. In the end, money doesn't matter. This picture makes me tear up.

Black and white picture of Marilyn Monroe with jazz pianist Buddy Greco

This photo shows Marilyn Monroe with jazz pianist Buddy Greco in August 1962, just days before her death. She was found dead in her Los Angeles home by her psychiatrist, having experienced various mental health problems including depression, anxiety, low self-esteem and chronic insomnia for many years. Her death was officially ruled a probable suicide due to the large amount of barbiturates she had ingested, previous overdosing and being prone to mood swings and suicidal ideation. There is much controversy over the death of MM. Some investigative experts believe that his death is intrinsically linked to the death of JFK. "Did she know too much?" - As regards JFK's death, the secret is well guarded in the FBI archives, which in turn has a close connection to his assassination, - mainly because of the Russian missiles that, in that epoch were then based on the Bay of Pigs in Cuba. The CIA categorically denies its involvement in the murders of MM and JFK. Who knows if now, with some of these files released by President DT, we can see a light at the end of the tunnel? I personally do not believe in this possibility, however, everything is possible.

    James Dean, 24, 1931-1955

Photography of James Dean at gas station

This photo of James Dean at a gas station was taken the day that he died. Dean was a keen driver and loved race cars. He died when he crashed the Porsche in this photo, swerving to avoid an oncoming car, on September 30, 1955. Curiously, when Dean introduced himself to British actor Alec Guinness during an encounter in Hollywood, he asked him to take a look at the car. Guinness thought the car appeared "sinister" and told Dean: "If you get in that car, you will be found dead in it by this time next week." This happened on September 23, 1955, seven days before Dean's death. (Source: Wikipedia.org)

Black and white pictures of Martin Luther King

The photo on the left shows the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. standing with other civil rights leaders on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 3rd, 1968.  A day later he was assassinated in approximately the same place by James Earl Ray, although there are many conspiracy theories surrounding the assassination. The photo on the right was taken directly after the shooting. King was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital, where doctors opened his chest and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation. He never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead at 7:05 p.m on April 4th, 1968. (Source: Wikipedia.org)

He was assassinated by the American Government. His family won a lawsuit in the 90s. The FBI had been after him for years. We have to wonder why people who preach peace and equality always get killed. Hoover considered him a great threat. If you do a bit of digging, all the evidence is there.

I don't know. I can see why people think that way. Many in government didn't like the civil rights stand and unity stand that he was making. But I don't know about govt involvement only because it's not proven. It could most likely have been a disgusting, racist individual who wanted MLK gone.

    Amy Winehouse, 27, 1983-2011

Photography of Amy Winehouse walking down the street

This photo of Amy Winehouse was taken in London on July 12th, 2011. She died at her home on July 23rd 2011, with the coroner's inquest reaching a verdict of accidental alcohol poisoning. Winehouse's blood alcohol content was more than five times the legal drink-drive limit, with the unintended consequences of such potentially fatal levels being her sudden death. Her brother, Alex Winehouse, revealed her battles with eating disorders. "She suffered from bulimia very badly. That's not, like, a revelation – you knew just by looking at her… She would have died eventually, the way she was going, but what really killed her was the bulimia… I think that it left her weaker and more susceptible. Had she not had an eating disorder, she would have been physically stronger." (Source: Wikipedia.org)

    Photography of John F. Kennedy

This photo of John F. Kennedy was taken just before his assassination in Dallas on November 22, 1963. Lee Harvey Oswald was charged with Kennedy's assassination, which he denied. Oswald was himself killed soon after. The case has led to myriad conspiracy theories that continue to circulate to this day. (Source: Wikipedia.org)

A tragic day. I was 10 years old and in an elementary school in Dallas. When we heard the news students and teachers wandered the hallways weeping. Oliver Stone got closer to the truth than the corrupt Warren Commission.

One of the biggest cover ups in U.S. history! Very tragic! I always thought it was suspicious that future president Gerald Ford (Who became President of the United States, after Nixon resigned) was on the Warren Commission, that investigated the assassination, and later pardoned Nixon. Remember, Nixon had lost the presidency to Kennedy in 1960. I wonder if the 'truth' will ever be revealed about JFK's assassination?

Uh.... Oswald did not kill himself "soon after". Lee Harvey Oswald went to a movie after shooting JFK, shot a Dallas police officer before he was arrested. He was later shot by Jack Ruby in the parking garage of the Dallas police station. This description was clearly not from Wikipedia.

    Michael Jackson, 50, 1958-2009

Photography of Michael Jackson on stage during his perfomance

This photo of Micheal Jackson was taken during rehearsals for upcoming sold out shows, two days before his death. Jackson went into cardiac arrest after a case of acute propofol and benzodiazepine intoxication at his home in Los Angeles on June 25, 2009. He was pronounced dead in a nearby hospital after multiple failed attempts to resuscitate him. His personal physician was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in 2011 and served a two-year prison sentence, having previously administered a cocktail of anti-anxiety drugs to Jackson that led to his death. Jackson had intended to perform a series of comeback concerts to over one million people at London's O2 Arena from July 2009 to March 2010. (Source: Wikipedia.org)

Yeah, that "doctor" was definitely responsible. Micheal was responsible in that most likely be knew that type of drug should not be administered outside of hospitals, but he used his status as MJ to get that kind of pull with the doctor. And the doctor was responsible in that he should not have administered it and knew he shouldn't, but did anyway. And did it for money. Glad he lost his license. He's a poor excuse for the medical field.

what a pain I felt when I learned of his death. I grew up with his music, and has always been more or less present in the events of my life. he was such an unfortunate child, whose childhood was taken away and that he never grew up, because of his father's beatings and absurd claims. when the rumors about his pedophilia came out, I could never believe it, because I believed that, on a mental level, he had remained a child like the ones he liked to surround himself with, and that his desire was never sexual, but a desire of fraternal love, towards whom, according to him, he could understand it. at the bottom was a child, imprisoned in the body of a man who was decaying quickly, because of the sforzofisico and the beatings that he suffered in childhood, and of having pushed to the limit then, to be able to keep up to its myth .

Was lucky enough to see him in concert, in an intimate concert, at a vineyard in Australia, and again, in concert at a bigger arena. Having never listened to his work before, I was truly naive to his work. And I can tell you - he was *truly* charasmatic. Only he, could make "I'm your man" sound sexy. "Ah, but a man never got a woman back Not by begging on his knees Or I'd crawl to you baby and I'd fall at your feet And I'd howl at your beauty like a dog in heat" A divine talent, truly missed. Am so glad I was lucky enough to become a fan.

He’d fallen and banged his head shortly before he died, and I was given to believe that was the cause of his death. He had cancer? 😰 Oh, how I hope he didn’t suffer! I never got the opportunity to see him live; whenever he came to New York, he always performed at teeny, tiny venues that held 50-100 people and I was never lucky enough to get a ticket. He’s the only hero I never got to see live. 😞

Listening right now to the tribute concert to him recorded on the anniversary of his death. His songs, they will live forever, but it is so sad. Had the privilege to see him a few years ago in Montreal. He ran across the stage, kneeled before the audience--such an energetic, charismatic, giving performer. He made a huge auditorium feel like an intimate club.

I have discovered a lot of bands through Kurt Cobain over the years and will always love Nirvana. I loved a lot of his quotes, the one about a******s at school, "they laugh at me because i'm different, i laugh at them because they are all the same". f**k yeah. Kurt was a sad soul, RIP Kurt.

another great loss due to depression, and consequent use of drugs and alcohol. if she had not ruined herself with all that she had done and drank, her voice could still give us priceless emotions, because she was endowed with a gift that even an atheist like me could call divine. surely something with an incalculable value.

Diana, Dodi and the driver died because they weren't wearing seatbelts and for some reason French emergency services were very slow to act. Her chances of survival were significantly decreased by the amount of time it took for the paramedics to arrive. During the inquest, in 2007, it emerged it took an hour and six minutes from the time Diana was taken from the wrecked car until she reached the hospital.

Several documentaries explain that paramedics take longer to arrive because they are better equipped than e. g. US medics to handle trauma cases. They worked on her the entire time. Would she have lived if they zipped straight there? Who knows. But the prolonged time is standard for that level of care in the ambulance.

He died on his toilet because he had diverticulitis. This has been confirmed by The Colonel. Opioids cause horrific constipation. One must drink a ton of water and take laxatives if they are on opioids. I was in the hospital for a month because this happened to me. No one talked about colons back in those days. So, The Colonel only published the heart attack, but not what it was from. It was caused by years of constant bearing down hard to move his rock-hard bowels. Had he drank water and taken laxatives, he could still be alive today.

Sorry to burst your bubble but Lincoln wasn't so much for equality as he was great tax advantages, the only reason he was against slavery was for tax and financial gain reasons. Of course the end of slavery (well the end of legal slavery) was one of the highlights of human history but he didn't do it because he felt sorry for the slaves and wanted equality.

    Brittany Murphy, 32, 1977 - 2009

    Photography of Brittany Murphy

This photo of Brittany Murphy shows her walking the red carpet on December 3rd, 2009 in what was her last public appearance. Soon after, on December 20th, she died of a cardiac arrest after collapsing in her bathroom, with causes believed to be acute pneumonia and severe anaemia as well as multiple drug intoxication. Murphy had been taking a range of over-the-counter and prescription medications, with the most likely reason being to treat a cold or respiratory infection. All of the drugs were legal and the death was ruled to be an accident. (Source: Wikipedia.org)

Lots of speculations about her death. Walking pneumonia can be easily misdiagnosed as bronchitis with a fatal outcome if not treated. Poor girl.

Try all they want to bring King of the Hill back, the show just won't be the same without that iconic voice of Luanne.

    Vladimir Lenin, 53, 1870-1924

Black and white photography of Vladimir Lenin

This is the last known photo of Vladimir Lenin, taken in May, 1923. He had suffered three strokes by this time and was completely mute. He passed away on January 21st, 1924 aged 53. The official cause of death was recorded as an 'incurable disease of the blood vessels,' and while there have been speculations that he had died of complications from syphilis, these rumours are unsubstantiated. Exactly one hundred years and one day ago (08.11.1917) this man and his political party seized power in Russia. It was an armed insurrection against the Provisional Government, which was to be administered after the abdication of the last Russian Tsar Nicholas II. Then the council of the country was to meet and choose a new path of development. But no ... The Leninist party seized power at once after that the civil war (1917-1922), then (and simultaneously, too) the "red terror" - shootings without trial and investigation by the secret police officers. After Stalin and his terror (for example, in 1937-1938), 700,000 people were shot or died in the camps (most of them political prisoners), then 1941-1945 the USSR enters the Second World War and leads it on the principle "we do not need cannon fodder ". Do you still have a question: why do not my people smile so often? ... На!... :)
