The vast majority of the people who died were not in the evacuation area. The evacuation area was figured out based on an understanding of the way volcanoes erupted which was drastically changed by the information learnt because of St Helens. I'm pretty sure this photographer was actually standing in a place assumed to be safe.

not certain about though, that as a living witness had said at the time he (Robert Landsberg, photographer) had been skiing prior & had shot the scene from afar in his car. ???

Hi Anne, I do well realise that it is a complex thing, I have also been much affected by it all and wouldn't wish a return to those times on anyone. But, my main point was intended to make some of the people who were definitely a great deal more removed from the situation think twice before openly praising and glorifying the people who committed this deed, and others like it. No political analysis beyond that was intended, although I guess I made my feelings perhaps a bit too clear about the justification for this particular incident.

It's wrong to murder people. Period.

What a stupid thing to say! Grief, anger, and helplessness are not so hard to understand - neither is victim mentality. No one has exclusive claim to these things - nor should they WANT TO. If you understood anything about your fellow human beings, you wouldn't say things like that.

Dude, you really need to study history a bit better if you can't tell cars from the 1910's from cars in the 70's & 80's.

Omagh is in Northern Ireland, which is a different country from Ireland. Which is kind of the whole point of the Troubles and the Omagh bombing.

I don't know this particular situation, but a person could conceivably pass out from lack of oxygen during a long fall from high altitude.

A very close friend of mine works at the mountain rescue service at Zugspitze in the German alps. He claims that your brain ‘shuts down’ just before you hit the ground. None oft Helen’s I don’t wanna know what is rushing through your head in that moment ):

I think we'd like to think that he passed out and was spared what must have been several seconds of pure terror. True the brain has a remarkable ability for handling mental situations so it's certainly possible he passed out but my guess is it's much like a bad car accident where you see the crash coming. A fall from that height would almost always kill you on impact. The human body was not designed for that kind of trauma. In the end though, this photo is nothing but heartbreaking.

There is a man, Michael Holmes, that survived a 15,000 ft fall after his parachute didn't deploy correctly he had a GoPro (or equivalent) on the entire time and he was conscious the entire way.

You would live until you hit the ground or water

A fall from 200ft would not be sufficient to cause unconsciousness or heart attack. It's been proven by the people who fell from the twin towers on 9/11. That was over 1600ft falls.

I know I've heard of some occasions where people have actually survived because they have managed to speed themselves out and somehow only like break their legs and not their spine but I'm sure that's extremely rare

either on is possible my sister died of a heart attack while falling after her parachute wouldn't open

Most pass out from the speed of fall, anything this height have to assume that. Some mentioned 911, fireman and few others on ground were acting. killed by falling body’s. Terrible, but determined on height.

You feel yourself hit the ground all your bones snap and puncture your heart and other vital organs eventually killing you

For about 10 seconds he would more alive than ever before! But, why did he jump? He must have planned this, right? Not sure how, but young people do occasionally survive 30,000 ft. in an unpressurized wheel well at -50 degrees F.

Many boys and men have. Literally not a single female has done this, oddly enough.
