What happens after we say cheese? The subjects of the following photographs probably didn’t predict the answer to be a morbid plot twist. We have all seen post-tragedy photos of terrible accidents. Yet, there is something particularly ominous and haunting about photos taken before disaster.
Think smiling families, groups embarking on explorations, and daring stunt attempts, not in the least expecting to be caught in a natural disaster or a horrific plane crash. Some of these pictures appear so unassuming and cheerful that it makes what followed all the more horror story-like.
William Shakespeare famously said, “Men at some times are masters of their fate,” but as you will see in the following photos taken before disaster, this is not always the case. Mount St. Helen Eruption
On May 18, 1980, Robert Landsberg, a freelance photographer, was just four miles away from Mount St. Helen. He had spent some time in the vicinity, exploring the beautiful vistas prior to the fatal event. This photo, showing the wall of ash that formed after the eruption, was the last one he took. Landsberg managed to hide the film with the photos before disaster struck on it under his body, leaving this as a piece of documentation of the events.
They did their best to evacuate everyone, but some chose to stay, refused to leave, or snuck in to see the eruption somehow believing they would be fine. I don't know this photographer's story, but I do know that there was a ton of warning beforehand and he chose to be there.
The vast majority of the people who died were not in the evacuation area. The evacuation area was figured out based on an understanding of the way volcanoes erupted which was drastically changed by the information learnt because of St Helens. I'm pretty sure this photographer was actually standing in a place assumed to be safe.

The Crew Of The Challenger Space Shuttle
This is one of the last pictures before the disaster of the Challenger shuttle. The image shows all of the seven Challenger Shuttle crew members as they are boarding the vessel on January 28, 1986. The Challenger broke apart 73 seconds into its flight, ultimately killing all of the seven crew members.

A launched that was rushed over the objections of NASA engineers to create a 'media op' for the President. Reagan was completely unaware of his inadvertent role, it was his vile underlings that applied the pressure, threatening NASA's budget if the launch was postponed. There's blood on their hands but they got off Scot-free.
To Jace. Due to winter weather, school was cancelled that day. I remember very well the day after day excuses for postponing the launch. A big rumor was having to delay any more they would miss the launch window for months. And further space travel funding would be cut. It was also the age of the recession and cutting funding for any "failing" National programs. And yes, by means of creative editting, the middle man between NASA and the President left out some very important details that hadn't been a problem before, and they took a chance their luck would hold out. The Omagh Bombing
The Omagh Bombing was a car bombing that occurred on August 15, 1998, in the town of Omagh in Northern Ireland. It was carried out by the Real Irish Republican Army. The blast took away the lives of 29 people, including that of a woman pregnant with twins, and injured over 200 others. The man and the child in the image that precedes unfortunate events survived, but the photographer didn’t.
Giant space Tiger - I'm from Northern Ireland- lived through the troubles and the situation is extremely complex. Best not to make political comments on a situation you don't understand. We are just grateful that those days have passed and we can go about our lives without worrying about being blown up or shot.
Hi Anne, I do well realise that it is a complex thing, I have also been much affected by it all and wouldn't wish a return to those times on anyone. But, my main point was intended to make some of the people who were definitely a great deal more removed from the situation think twice before openly praising and glorifying the people who committed this deed, and others like it. No political analysis beyond that was intended, although I guess I made my feelings perhaps a bit too clear about the justification for this particular incident.

My daughter had been staying in Omagh working on a small farm. The lady of the house had hold her "nothing bad ever happens in Omagh", days later this terrorist attack happened.
Continuing- there was a rebellion in 1798, and the famous battles of the 1690's. Waves of invaders claiming land over thousands of years. So 1916 was not the beginning at all. No Irish rebels were ever shot by little girls, the leaders were executed. The 'real' IRA didn't really appear until after the ceasefire in the 90's. The 'provisional' IRA were one of the most active factions during the troubled - you might mean them. This is what I mean about complex. Both sides lost many many people. Both sides operated as terrorists. Both sides wrote 'songs' or co-opted older songs to their cause.

Neither political entity is called Ireland the Island is. On February 20, 1970, a 14-year-old Australian teen named Keith Sapsford snuck into the Sydney Airport and hid in the wheel well of a plane en route to Japan. Keith was described as a curious kid, and this was his attempt at an adventure. However, soon after the plane took off, a tragedy struck, and Keith’s 200ft plunge to death was accidentally documented by John Gilpin, an amateur photographer, who happened to be testing his new camera lens at that time and took this haunting photo before a disaster.

I don't know this particular situation, but a person could conceivably pass out from lack of oxygen during a long fall from high altitude.

Unfortunately for me my train to airport just closed the doors (next one was in an hour and half) and I stupidly decided to cling to the side of the train holding the handle) with the thought of getting off the next station which was 5 min with the train, and the fact that I have seen some people do it in other countries on), but then 10 seconds I dawns on me that trains can go at a ridiculous speed and route involved crossing bridges and into tunnels (which were narrow) and then luckily the platform was long and decided to get off while the trains was still round the platform. To say the least I jumped of the moving train and what I call a miracle, I only sustained a huge superficial gash on my knee and cuts here and there. The dumbest thing I have ever done. When my mum remembers the incident she has this look that she wants to commit me.

The photos taken before disaster show William “Dave” Sanders guiding over 100 students out of the cafeteria to safety. While he did save those students, he was later shot twice in the chest and did not survive.
This happened in 1999 and the government has yet to do ANYTHING to stop school shootings. This should have been the last massacre, but it was only the first.

Uruguayan Flight 571
This is the last image of the infamous Uruguayan Flight 571, right before it crashed in the Andes on October 13, 1972. 27 out of 45 people survived the initial crash. However, they were eventually forced to cannibalize the dead to stay alive. Out of the 27 who survived the crash, 16 were rescued 72 days later.
There is a movie about this, "Alive" with Ethan Hawke. Also it probably helped that they were all members of a rugby team, so they were physically fit.

I have stared at this picture for a long time now. Looking into their eyes and wondering which ones survived the crash and then which ones eventually died. I can't imagine the strength of the one person who either or both took this picture and then had it printed after being rescued to be able to look at it and know that possibly one or more of these young men helped him survive the whole ordeal. So very sad.

The Malaysia Airlines Flight 17
Dave Hally took one last photo of his wife and their 4-year-old daughter aboard the MH17 flight that was supposed to take them on their dream vacation from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. The plane was shot down shortly after its take-off while flying over a Russian-controlled part of eastern Ukraine. The tragedy took the lives of all 283 passengers and 15 crew members, and this is one of the last pictures before the disaster.
I remember this happening because it was a huge atrocity and because there were a lot of people on board heading to a conference on AIDS. So doctors, researchers, and a lot of people who were working towards a cure.

If I remember correctly, the driver in that taxi survived. A woman living in one of those buildings later thanked the pilots. The plane changed course once they realized they were going to crash. It flew over a river to avoid crashing in the city. The pilots saved many lives this way. Neither pilot survived. There was a particular focus on one of the pilot though I can't remember why anymore.

Last Moments Of Harambe
Harambe, a 17-year-old silverback gorilla, was shot after an incident involving a kid falling into his enclosure. The tragic events sparked a lot of talk on the internet, with many condemning the conduct of the zookeepers, saying the gorilla was shot without justification. In the image, you can see the last moments before Harambe’s death in Cincinnati Zoo in 2016.
The fault is of the parents, not keeping an eye on their child. Harambe may have been dangerous, but so is letting your child wander around at that age. They should have been supervising.
This makes me so angry! This poor gorilla was murdered due to irresponsible idiots not watchng their kid!
What's also tragic is that some observers believed that Harambe was actually trying to protect the child.

I absolutely agree. When you're taking care of your child you're not worried he might go to the gorilla cage (which in this case happened) but you're in a crowded place where he might get lost or someone can easily take him from you. It is a shame that they had to kill an endangered species due to parents not paying attention to their child.

Several years ago, I encountered a cougar in an open space area, in town, where a lot of people hike. At the trail head, there are instructions on what to do. No one expects it to happen in a populated area. Be prepared.

That look is due to the hypoxia... it’s literally pushing his eyes against his skull.. he wouldn’t have known what was about to happen. That’s the deal when you are that hypoxic.

It's so odd that the couple is not centered as the subject of the image as if the photographer was deliberately trying to capture the girl in red as well. I wonder if the original image was wider and eventually cropped to better show that they had also captured the suicide victim.

The last picture of Archduke Ferdinand, the heir of the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife Sophie, was taken about an hour before the assassination of the Archduke took place. The killing was done by a Bosnian-Serb nationalist, Gavrilo Princip, in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and his actions ultimately triggered the beginning of WWI.
it's incredible how he was actually killed. An assassin had tried to throw a bomb under their passing car, but it missed and exploded the car behind, the assassin then took his cyanide pill, but it was faulty and just caused him to throw up (a lot) so he panicked and threw himself in the river, but it had been a long hot summer, so the river was shallow... Ferdinand then was rushed away but later wanted to go and see the survivors or the earlier bomb, it was when he was on his way there that he was shot.
Actually, the driver made a wrong turn when going to the survivors, and passed in front of the gunman, who shot Archduke Ferdinand.

Gavrilo Princip was not a "Serb Nationalist", but a member of organization which was dedicated to the liberation of Bosnia from Austro-Hungarian occupation. Members of this organization were also Croats and Muslims.

Yeah, I remember reading this in The Story of the World. Gavrilo Princip was drinking coffee when he saw Ferdinand and Sophie in their car. He got out a gun and shot both of them. Also, someone tried to kill them by planting a bomb under their car. The car was blown up, but they both survived.
Pacific Southwest Airlines Flight 182
In 1978, Pacific Southwest Airlines Flight 182 from Sacramento tragically crashed into a small private Cessna 172. After the collision, the 182 fell down, and this image captured the moment before it hit the ground. 137 people on the airplanes were killed, as well as 7 watching the event take place on the ground.
I saw that happen... it was PE class and we were playing soccer on the upper field at Junipero Serra High School in San Diego. We watched the PSA jet go across the sky on fire until it hit the ground
I remember it, too. I was a student at Point Loma High. It went down in the North Park neighborhood killing everyone on board & seven people on the ground. Freaky as hell to see it fly by.
It was in my parents neighborhood. My mom was changing my diaper and heard and felt the crash.
I lived on a small hill in Logan Heights and was having a cup of coffee and looking out my window. It was horrific. Couldn't believe what I was seeing.

Japan Air Lines Flight 123
Japan Air Lines Flight 123 was supposed to be a domestic flight from Tokyo to Osaka, Japan. On August 12, 1985, the Boeing 747 suffered a severe malfunction 12 minutes into the flight, and after flying for another 32 minutes under minimal control, crashed near Tokyo. Out of 524 people on the flight, only 4 ultimately survived.
I am honestly curious how 4 people managed to survive. That is incredible luck.
According to the wiki article, a lot of people survived the initial crash but died later due to the delay and errors of the rescue mission. Plus two of the survivots were kids, and kids usually have some advantages in survival, like a lot of collagen in their bones which makes them hard to fracture.

Christopher McCandless (the man from “Into The Wild” story) was an American adventurer. His last adventure took place in the Alaskan bush, where he stayed in an abandoned bus for over 100 days. His decomposing body was found in 1992 by moose hunters, with starvation later determined as the cause of his death (although that’s still debated). This is one of the last pictures before disaster.

I've read the Krakauer book (recommend) and his sister's book. His parents, particularly is father, was a piece of work. Disgusting selfish people. I think he at first was supposed to have died from the seeds of a plant, then mushrooms, but basically he was not eating enough protein. He let a moose carcass rot and he was unable to cross a river (that ironically had a crossing about a mile away). So he was neither prepared with adequate food or skills for back country living in the 49th state.

I have been hunting and fishing and spending days at a time out in the woods with just what I can pack in. I know how to kill an animal and preserve the meat, I know exactly what I can gather and eat and if I don't know it I will not take a book and guess. He should of had trot lines in the river, snares in the brush and 50lbs of pemmican made up to help him survive. Considering that a bridge was only a few miles away he was really dumb, he could of walked out in a few hours

On July 25, 2000, Air France flight 4590, a Concorde passenger jet bound for New York from Paris, crashed shortly after its takeoff. The plane’s engines caught on fire, and the crash took the lives of 113 people in total. Although it was the only fatal accident in 27 years of Concordes being operated, they were all grounded after the crash, soon to be retired and never to fly again altogether.

When they found his remains with his equipment and everything intact, there was no photograph of his wife. I like to think they made it. They found Mallory a few years ago. It is said that if they could find Irvine, who had the camera, they might have photos to prove absolutely that they summited.

From what I remember it was a lot of things that added up to a perfect storm situation. There was egg crate foam being used as sound proofing, the location was really too small to use those pyrotechnics, there weren't enough exits, people panicked and their bodies blocked the exits so no one could get out. The bouncers turned people away from some of the exits. This is a still from a video, the reporter actually got out, he realized what was happening and calmly walked toward the exit. You can watch it on youtube, but be prepared, it is graphic and still haunts me. It is a valuable lesson for not panicking and running for the exits. People clogged the exits and no one could get out.

The reason why this photo is so blurry is because it was taken on July 18, 1853. In the image, you can see Joseph Avery, the sole survivor of a boat crash that killed two other passengers, clinging to a rock to be saved. He stayed this way for 18 hours, and when the rescue boat came, it capsized just as he boarded it, ultimately ending Avery’s life. It’s probably one of the oldest photos taken before disaster.
July 16th 1853 - three men working on a dredging scow (barge) which was anchored in the Niagara River east of Goat Island decided to go to shore during the afternoon. The only way to shore was by use of a row boat. As the three men started rowing to shore, they soon discovered that the current of the water was much stronger than they had anticipated. Suddenly one of their oars broke. The small row boat entered the American Channel rapids and swept downstream. The rowboat capsized. Two of the men were swept to their death over the brink of the American Falls. The third man, Samuel Avery, was able to grab onto some tree roots growing from a rock just east of Chapin Island. Avery spent the night stranded in the cool fast flowing water. The sound of the rapids prevented any of Avery's screams for help to be heard.
The next morning, Avery's plight was observed by several tourists. Efforts to rescue Avery began. Initial efforts consisted of releasing boats and raft from the Bath Island Bridge. None of the craft were able to reach Avery. Finally a boat which was tethered to the Bath Island Bridge was guided downstream and reached Samuel Avery. With little strength left, Avery was able to climb into the boat but the boat immediately capsized throwing Avery back into the turbulent waters. Throwing his hands up in surrender, Avery let out a final scream, fell backwards into the water and was swept to his death over the American Falls
