We've all heard about crappy design, something that turns a blind eye to user-friendliness, logic and common sense, aesthetics, and people in general. We’re talking billboards, TV ads, product packaging and product design, websites and apps, you name it.

The phenomenon of crappy design is that no matter how much our marketing strategies and advertising techniques have evolved in the past decades, it still finds its place in our daily lives. Check out some examples of crappy design in Bored Panda’s previous features here, here and here.

This time, we are taking a step further. Sometimes the design is so annoying, senseless and defunct that it seems like the brands are doing this deliberately or at least without shame. There’s even a whole corner of reddit dedicated to cases “when a*** design things.”

With a whopping 2.9 million members, the community pokes fun at the mentality that “nothing comes before profit, especially not the consumer.” Below, we wrapped up some of the evilest designs, so let us know what you think of them in the comments!

Bad design can be found everywhere, from the products we use every day to the websites we visit. Poorly designed products can be difficult to use, causing us to waste time and energy. They can also be dangerous, as faulty product or packaging designs can lead to accidents.

Meanwhile, websites with bad design can be hard to navigate, preventing us from finding the information we need. They can also be visually unappealing, making us less likely to return. At the same time app can have a very bad user experience which means people will be reluctant to use it. From confusing navigation to cluttered layouts, anyone can spot a very poor design.

Pinterest is a cesspool. I found some of my facebook photos had been uploaded on pinterest. A girl (wannabe maker/influencer/scammer) reuploaded them with her watermark and used them as example of her creations. Had to subscribe to the website to report the images, and after weeks of waiting... nothing happened. Zero answers, support or even an automated mail. In the meanwhile those images were stolen by others and popped around for a while on other websites, mostly on ads of promoting scams. Stopped uploading my work anywhere.

Jerk designs seem to take a step further than simply bad designs and come across as downright unethical and immoral. They snuck their way into the products and services we consume, and sometimes we don’t even notice them.

According to Danny Sapio, the lead product designer at Method and cofounder of Confettihabits.com, shrinkflation is a classic case of less product and more profit. “Companies use this tactic to discreetly sell less of a product at the same price that it was before.”

Moreover, Sapio argues that “companies can do this through labeling by displaying “FAMILY SIZE” or “PARTY SIZE” despite it being the same amount as the regular item.” For us, the unsuspecting shoppers, it’s something that’s really easy to miss.

I had to file for bankruptcy at 24 because of medical debt. I've had no less than three people tell me I should have just sucked it up when I got sick because I'm just an entitled millennial with no right to medical care.

In America, ALWAYS ask for an itemized list of hospital charges. I have lupus and we would be dead broke without this habit. Once got a hospital bill down 65% by making them explain every charge. They found so many "erroneous charges" it was amazing. I was charged for a CAT scan I did not get. It is now LAW. They cannot say no to giving you that list.

Absolutely. I have a serious medical condition that is going to require surgery and I'm having panic attacks already about how much I'm going to pay out of pocket. Never mind that I actually have medical insurance - I needed an MRI this week and they told me I would be on the hook for $900 after my insurance pays their part. Seeing a specialist for a consultation cost me $875 after insurance as well. I've had thousands in ER bills too. And I'm likely looking at around $15,000 that my insurance won't cover for this surgery. How does anyone afford to be sick in this country? I'm considering putting it off, even though I really do need to have it done. Most days I hate being a citizen of the US. The government only cares about money, not people.

I had surgery to repair a sports hernia, and the woman I was dating at the time assisted on the operation (she was a foot surgeon and had her own practice). She requested an itemized bill, and on it there was a listing for "medication transport fee," with each (six of them) being a $20 charge. I couldn't figure that one out, but it turns out the "transfer fee" was the nurse carrying Tylenol down the hall to my room. My surgeon girlfriend actually defended it (she requested the itemized bill so she could see any little tricks she could use in her billings), saying that the nurse's time was worth the charges. Nope.

How long did it take for the nurse to bring that Tylenol? Let's say 1min to go there, 1 min to stay, 1min to leave. Makes $20 every 3min for the nurse, right? So her hourly wage is $400. Okay, let's say 50 % of that goes to the hospital itself, still she makes $200 an hour. No? What am I missing here? (yeah, it's sarcasm. Bull*hit system!)

I broke my ankle during lockdown. Everyone else is out jogging and exercising and cycling during their allowed exercise. I spend half an hour walking my dog in a deserted field and fall over her. Yep, I inherited the clumsy gene. I had 3 X-rays, 3 different casts (a half cast, a royal blue cast with silver disco glitter on and a dark green cast with red Christmas glitter). I had to have a course of blood thinner injections because I wasn’t very mobile. I had a little knee scooter so I could scoot round without putting weight on my ankle and a pair of crutches. I then had a solid ankle brace and 12 weeks of physio. Total cost £0. To be fair, I should have paid £9 odd for the injections but the card reader wasn’t working at the hospital pharmacy and they couldn’t be bothered so they just gave them to me.

Nothing new. Used to work in EMS. For a trip to the hospital in an ambulance it was 750.00 minimum with no/basic interventions (blood pressure, pulsox basic). To start a 12 lead for an EKG it was 1500.00, for a blood glucose check was 100.00. Easily made them 10k a night for a 12 hour shift. In a week they would make what I made plus more in a year. Was paid about 14 an hour... Hospitals are no different. Bloodwork and a CT Scan? 5k. Hopefully you don't have a Heart attack after opening those bills... Neverending cycle that unfortunately the lower employees and public suffer most from. Not enough pay for an extremely stressful job and overpriced basic necessities and tests ( I obviously understand some of these you can't get around expense) but some are just grossly overpriced. It's disgusting.

I am (in a scary way) desensitized to the US healthcare system...but one charge that will always stick with me is the money I paid to hold my newborn. Literally a charge for "skin to skin care". Apparently because a nurse handed and supervised me holding my newborn to my chest. True story.

Also we do have Medicaid and Medicare to pay for health services at no charge to the individual if they are low income or disabled. Which is nice...but if you have a job that pays you above the bare minimum, you no longer qualify. So the whole system literally is designed to keep you poor and subsequently less empowered. Many families who had rough starts will tell you they were more financially sound when they had to rely on government assistance than they were after degrees and good jobs. Some even choose to not marry to benefit from programs for single parents. Even older generations will DIVORCE to get better medical coverage. It's not just that the expenses are outrageous, but the paths to affordable healthcare will put you in a disadvantage class.

Get detailed, itemized bills. Question EVERYTHING! Those cough drops? No way! Refuse to pay for any outrageous items like that. Take the time to type up each item you are disputing and why. List their price, regular prices and what (if any) you'll pay. They once told me that I couldn't take my personal medicine, had to take what they gave me. Flat out refused & argued till Dr agreed. Also used my monitor for checking diabetes cause they charged $10 each time. FIGHT IT! Pay small amounts each month on what you owe. No obligation to pay the amount that they ask as long as you pay something

My son broke his hand and finger this summer. He had to get 2 casts, because he got one wet (he is 6, I am surprised we only had to replace it once). I work in the medical field and often buy supplies. I know a roll.of casting material is about $7, the protective guaze they put on 1st, about $2 a roll. They used one roll of the guaze and 2 rolls of the casting material for each cast. It took the ortho tech about 30 minutes each time. I will be generous and put their wage at $30 an hour, (which it should be), so $15 for labor. So, $2 for the guaze +$14 for the cast + $15 for the labor x2 = $46. I would have been happy paying $100 for covering operating costs. My bill was $598. We have a $1000 deductible on our insurance plan, so I had to pay the whole amount. Thankfully my employers give us HSA with the amount of our deductible. But I feel so bad for anyone under insured or who have no insurance.

Republicans made sure that the people negatively affected by the problem (anyone who is not wealthy) are powerless to fix it. They've perpetually stonewalled socialized healthcare, claiming it will destroy the economy, even though every other industrialized society has socialized medicine and managed to avoid catastrophe. They also managed to have it written into law that corporations are legal "persons" so they can use their wealth to make campaign contributions to politicians who will defend their billing practices. The only way this gets fixed is if the people directly benefitting from it decide to fix it out of the goodness of their hearts.

You're paying for a nurse (maybe) to $2. find the cough drops, $2. open the box, $2 take out a cough drop, $2 put the box back and $2, write it up for your stay. Oh, I almost forgot, free delivery.

That is disgusting! Hospital bills are crazy! I would like to buy all my medical paraphernalia for after surgery or recuperating in a hospital myself! The hospital needs to give me a list of things I might need during my stay and I would fill the order myself before I go to the hospital stay is an expected stay or a family or friend could go to the drugstore for after I have become registered patient! It would be a lot less!

there's been push by gov and activists to require all otc meds to be blister packed in one case is Imodium reason illegal opioid users sometimes use it and in higher quantity than 2 tabs to counteract some effects of the drug. but it will increase cost and it will not stop illegal drug use but penalize cancer patients as well as ibd i think the agency who long ago lost the war on drugs proposed it along with increasing there budget to do the exact same thing its done since inception that failed but don't want to try anything different that might just work. but they sure enjoy making life harder for patients with real diseases and injuries. I'm convinced its a sadist agency

Many hospitals bill your insurance based on what is in your room. Not uncommon to see someone coming in a room and scanning equipment. Unless it is actively being used by you, tell them to remove it. Iv poles, those pulse ox machines, etc. Also if you're I'm the hospital and they give you one of those clear and blue plastic things to breathe in once an hour to prevent pneumonia and what not. Keep it and bring it the next time you or a loved one go to the hospital. Hospitals charge like $500 for those are even if you don't use it once they put one in your room you will be billed for it.

Plus we're paying for upper class health care. Reward systems for American airlines, Visa card annex, Platinum, Amex, black, etc. Etc. The only reason why those incentives exist is because middle class and lower pay for it all with them failing to make payments and paying an exorbitant interest rate pays for the ones above as above so below.

When I worked in a hospital, I sat in with a few of the nurses in my department; probably eating lunch and they were talking… maybe an informal meeting? This was probably 2 lifetimes ago so exact details have been long forgotten. Somehow the conversation steered into patient billing. The charge nurse justified billing patients per pillow charge. She claimed doctors come into a patient’s room, greet the patient and then walk out. Maybe 5 -10 min turnaround time and they get to bill the patients the doctor’s consult fee for that. Nurses don’t have that luxury so, to make up for it, bill the patient for every pillow that is requested or even given to patient. I think it was from that moment on, those nurses lost all credibility in my eyes. I can’t say if the others genuinely agreed or just because they did not want to contradict the shift charge nurse. Either way, I was shocked pikachu faced especially in my head. At the time, I was not a nurse and have never been one.

My father used to get medicine, an injection for each quarter, while he was being treated for prostate cancer. The prices on them was 3000 euro. This was never any problem for my parents and these costs are all covered in Dutch health care. But seeing those prices on medicine is a step made to make people conscious about the cost of health care. Which is a joke... People NEED these medicine, putting a price on them doesn't make people think... nah... I'll pass, I'll just suffer my illness instead of using this medicine. It's just not the right way to combat rising health care costs

At least this is an easy dispute. Shouldn't have to at all but there is something out there where if you point out the drastic difference between the hospital price and the store price they have to lower it. But only if you call them on it

Another great example of jer design practices is the use of lethal enforcers. They require the user to take the action that the company wants before they can do what they intend to do.

“Lethal enforcers are essentially a way that companies gatekeep the decision making for users. Instead of giving users a free choice, the company decides for the individual the decision that should be made then makes that their only choice,” Sapio explained.

An example of a lethal enforcer is when you want to write a review on Yelp but have to download the brand’s app first. “Or when a company suppresses relevant search results to display sponsored products or content.”

Another very shady design practice is throttling. “Throttling is when a company intentionally downgrades the service or product with the hopes that the customer upgrade. This is different than forced obsolescence because the product still works; it’s just much slower and shittier than it used to be,” the product designer explained.

It turns out that even giant brands like Apple have been found guilty of this. Apple has settled a class-action lawsuit over its practice of slowing down older iPhones, agreeing to pay up to $500 million to impacted consumers.

“Another example is ‘unlimited’ data providers that sneakily slow down internet speeds once they pass a certain threshold of data usage,” Sapio concluded.

Reminds me of Pizza Pizza. Every now and then their site's online delivery ordering doesn't work. It just stays buffering or crashes when you want to pay. When you call in to report the issue (not order) they immediately start an order for you, and don't want to listen about their website. When you say you want the same deal with the online coupon they tell you it's only available on the website. I've refused making an order when that happens.

That one's arguably the stupidest and most impudent so far: You specifically buy bluetooth pods so you're not leashed to your phone and they not only kill that single advantage but have the audacity to advertize with "never needs charging"! OF COURSE I DOESN'T IF THERE'S NO BATTERY AND IT'S CONSTANTLY PLUGGED IN!

No, we can’t. The toilets are always kept clean, an attendant is always on duty and no-one is ever just hanging around in there doing god knows what. If the bogs are open, an employee is there somewhere. It’s also a lot safer - I’d rather use a paid toilet at the railway station late in the evening than anywhere else.

Um...no. I despise Walmart, but this isn't even remotely true. The circled area highlighting the missing price tags is an overstock area. You can clearly see the price tags on all the other shelves. That...and this photo was posted on Reddit 2 years ago.
